After a cataclysmic interstellar war that came very close to exterminating humanity, the Daybreak Republic has risen from the ashes and embarked upon a mission to unite hundreds of human colony worlds under its banner, in hopes of preventing a second and final conflict that will complete the destruction of the human race. But not everyone agrees that the empire’s ends justify the means.
In the aftermath of Leo Morningstar’s last mission, war has erupted between the Daybreak Republic and the Secessionist Alliance, stretching the navy’s resources to the breaking point. Admiral Blackthrone’s fleet is pinned down, unable to go on the offensive without leaving key worlds exposed, as rebels raid shipping lines and make Daybreak look weak ahead of a major assault. Desperate to break the stalemate before it is too late, Admiral Blackthrone places Leo Morningstar in command of a ragtag fleet of outdated starships and charges him with harassing the enemy, buying time for the navy to assemble the force they need to strike back.
But with resentful subordinates within his fleet and enemy plans finally coming into the light, it may be too late to save the sector – or Daybreak itself.
Pretty entertaining book and one of the first to deal with sexuality in the service
I really take umbrage with writers that paint unrealistic morals on people. Here our hero is a 20/21 year old. He is presented with the weaknesses and sex drive of a 20/21 year old. It gets him in over his head more often than not. It is also a good space conflict series. The good guys are good but don't always win. The bad guys are bad, but don't always lose. And who is good and who is bad can be somewhat of a moving target. Looking forward to the next book.
This series started out with a couple of very unlikely plot devices, but it was worth it in the end. But it got better, the protagonist ACTUALLY maybe learned something, but the book was a good book in the quintessential CGN style. Read the seroes first books of course.
I am trying to figure out where Leo will go from here. I know many writers incorporate real history as a guide. I know it is just my self image as an American , but is Leo going to turn out to be George washington? He did fight for the British after all, until the "tempest in a teapot" in 1776. Just saying. Leo and other characters grow and fill out as real people. Nuttall knows how to write a good story and in this series his ability to create and develop characters is his best. It’s a great story made better by good writing and character development.
Interesting plot. A slow start, but well worth persevering with. The main characters used in this book's storyline were well developed and believable. But I did feel the characters who appeared in the previous books were neglected and came across as wishy washy, which was a shame. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Quite an easy read as tge young Leo Morningstar emulates Nelson and Cochran. Like many space operas there is a problem that warfare weapons techniques have atrophied and are no better than today but with the addition of starships . That said I find these books really enjoyable.
The character development of Leo Morningstar over the 4 books is awesome. A high level of suspense is maintained throughout this book. Keep me up reading into the wee hours of the night.
Love this series! Solid world development and great characters built around a story that is enjoyable and easy to read. I like Leo! I look forward to the next installment.
This was another good read and got exciting in a lot of places. Leo still cannot keep it in his pants and falls into be with another woman but I could see how it was going to end and it did. I look forward to the next boo though I feel it will be a while before the next one is published
