To Catch a Witch Assassin

Rate this book
Cursed to feel the pain of another…

Magic-less conwoman Gentry Greenbriar hates witches, especially her deadbeat father. Because of his selfishness, she’s cursed to forever siphon another’s pain while imprisoned at the Curse Ward. When she discovers the identity of the politician who bought her, Gentry comes up with a escape and break the curse, even if she must put a bounty on her own head.

Killing a defenseless, magic-less girl should be easy…

The witch city of Skadra whispers that he’s an assassin, but Kit saves his lightning quick spellwork for those who slaughtered his coven leader—one evil witch at a time. Now Kit wants out, but his ex-girlfriend promises his services to Skadra’s most powerful coven. The job is scummy yet simple.

He never anticipated his target stealing his free will with an ancient ritual.

Three wishes. Dark soul magic. A city of gun-for-hire supernaturals. Freedom sings for Gentry as her pet witch obeys her every word. But untangling her soul from a deranged politician’s is nasty business, and the city suffers because of it. Gentry shouldn’t care. She shouldn’t. Too bad her plans never accounted for an overprotective, sexy witch assassin who stirs up her lustful (and illogical) feelings.

‎"If you keep acting like a dog, then I’ll treat you like a dog."
‎— Gentry.

‎💚 He’s a witch assassin
‎💚 She’s a cursed, magic-less human
‎💚 Third person multi POV
‎💚 An attempted murder goes wrong
‎💚 He has to fulfill her three wishes or die
‎💚 "Good for you" but it’s for him
‎💚 God help him he’s stuck between psycho women

‎Nuala and Nuada from Hellboy, but make it the FMC, Gentry, and the villain, Drayer Netherton, who are connected instead. Not the love interest. Not someone important to her. But YASSSH, it’s the ✨ villain ✨ If one of them dies, the other would probably follow, unless they can cut the soul bond. Racing against time, Gentry is accompanied by her pet, I mean mmmm, a witch, to find answers about the curse that’s breaking her body.

‎Sounds interesting? Welcome to the world of Skadra, baby 😉

‎If you’re looking for Katniss 2.0, you’ll be disappointed, because Gentry starts off as a selfish conwoman. In the early chapters, she breaks the MMC Kit’s shoulder (it’s fun), lets her bestie sacrifice herself so she can escape (it’s tragic), and nearly chokes Kit to death when she forces him to fulfill her wishes AFTER trapping him with some ancient ritual (it’s cinematic).

‎Seriously, I instantly imagined how the scene would play on screen: Kit’s shock when he realizes Gentry’s little trick is working, how he gasps for air and burns too much magic in panic, and how Gentry just stands there in the background watching it all unfold.

‎I’d pay for it.

‎What can I say? I like watching men suffer 🙂

‎Kit, poor guy, is the definition of someone who can do no right. People are literally mad at him just for breathing too loud, and sadly (or funnily), it’s all women. It was so hilarious I cried 😂 His male best friend is literally the only one who has his back. His sisters hate him. Gentry walks him like a dog. Another powerful woman almost kills him. And don’t even get me started on his ex gf, Visha. Kit is just a guy with a country accent who wants a peaceful life. HAHAHAHA. In his dreams.

‎SOMEONE PLEASE SAVE THIS MAN 😭

‎Their dynamic is perfectly balanced!! At least, for me, not for Kit tho 😩 I love it when the women use the men for their own benefit 😂 The first time they almost fucked, it happened because they were trying to use each other. Delicious 😋 This is a slow burn romance, so there are only three (?) spicy scenes, but they’re enough for the story. Nothing feels like pointless fanservice.

‎And no no no, it’s not just romance focused. The plot explores their emotional baggage too: Gentry with her daddy issues, and Kit with ... Well, sister issues 💀

‎Thankfully, there’s no "you don’t understand my pain!" moment.

‎No unnecessary separation.

‎And thank God there’s no "Genie" nickname. I know I’d hate it if someone called Gentry "Genie" 😭 I mean yuuuck!

‎But one thing I hate more than silly nicknames is nasty villains, and Drayer fits the description. He’s not morally gray. He’s not charming. The man is just straight up evil, and repeat after me: we do NOT like him 🤢

‎Personally, I think Drayer’s characterization would’ve developed from more POV chapters. We needed to be inside his head once in a while, to understand him, to hate him, to curse him. His limited POV unfortunately weakened the biggest plot twist. There’s also a hidden identity trope, which could’ve been great bcs Drayer’s face is revealed pretty early, but the clues are basically nonexistent. It just gets thrown in randomly based on Gentry’s "feelings" and I was like, WHAT?? I felt like I missed something 😬

‎I think plot twists are supposed to shock us, not confuse us. At the very least, the author should give readers a chance to guess along, so when the big moment comes, we feel rewarded. Jute Foster is another indie writer who does excellent villain POVs that make my blood boil, and I believe this author could do the same. She just needs to do it more often.

‎Another thing I didn’t like is how quickly the ending wrapped up. It’s the final fight ... But the "fight" is weirdly quiet. On one hand, it’s nice to see Gentry use her brain, but it ends in the blink of an eye. Like, come ooooon, I want daggers flying into someone’s heart. I want more uncontrollable vampires. I want chaos. Not three pages of talking. It was honestly kind of disappointing, but I’ll only knock one star off because there’s a sapphic couple 🥰

‎Sapphic always makes a story better 👀

‎But seriously, for a debut, TCAWA worldbuilding is impressive. We’re introduced to the world naturally without info dumpling. The names are sprinkled in slowly, so even though there are many, it never feels overwhelming.

‎Szalay created a world where vampires aren’t killers with glowing skin, but mindless creatures controlled by their masters, the government side eyeing witches, and even a dead fox owned by a necromancer shows up. It was a blast.

‎I can’t even name all the interesting side characters because there are TOO MANY. Clea and Luke. Wren and Adrienne. Samar. Fun fact: three names in this book are actually Indonesian words (Raja, Samar, Nona), which made me extra happy lol 😂 And ofc, we can't forget the new couple hinted at near the end.

‎So if the author asked me whether I wanted to go back and visit Skadra City, I’d say: OOOOOHH ABSOLUTELY YES.

loved this book unique power system slight politics based on revenge and bargins human non magic vs witches and other on human beings

fml locked in a prison for her own safety after beings cursed at 18 after 5 year she begins to learn the truth so plans and excape but doesn't go as easy as she planed
thats where the ml kit come in such golden retriever type constantly guilty over being sent to kill her but ends up trapped to 3 favourite that start the journey to uncovering so much ,the way the ml and fml interact kept me on edge just waiting for them to cross the line
the double pov was great as it gave insight to how each was feeling and what they was thinking much needed

I think this would be a standalone base on ending but I can hope for more 🙏

My 1st time with Victoria Szalay and I had to change my mind as the book grew on me. The MFC Gentry, a highly intelligent, crafty, non magical human was soul bounded and stuck in the Curse Ward for years, but she planned her escape geniusly. Visha, ex girlfriend of Kit and head of of the Jumpers Coven made a deal with Clea, a violent and vicious Weaver debt collector. Kit had to murder Gentry. From here on the suspense and action picked up by notches to keep you on edge. Some very interesting and unexpected twists and truths about the pasts not the mention the spice thrown in towards the end. Kind of a enemies to lovers theme. A bit of a slow start, but the rest will definitely be worth it.

This is my first ever advanced reader copy review and I feel very blessed to have been able to read this book so thank you to Victoria Szalay.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. To Catch a Witch Assassin is about our MFC Gentry a cursed magic-less conwomen and MMC Kit a witch assassin and three wishes. I enjoyed the character progression throughout the story. I was surprised with the unexpected twists.Loved the bit of spice we got and really happy with how the book ended. Can’t wait to read more books by this author.

To Catch a Witch Assassin is a Spicy Paranormal Romance in a world of witches, humans, vampyres, and monsters. It follows Gentry, a magic-less human, and Kit, a witch. Gendry is imprisoned in the Curse Ward, where people who are cursed are held to protect themselves and others from their curses. She is being held against her will and is soul-bound to someone else, which means any injury the other person gets, gets transferred to her. She finds out she is soulbound to a powerful politician, so she puts a hit out on herself as a means to escape. Kit is the assassin who begrudgingly accepts the assignment to protect his coven.
Magic-less Gentry turns out to be more than Kit can handle as she traps him into owing her 3 favors, one of which she uses to get out of the ward. Together, they try to figure out how to completely get her free of her soulbound curse.
As a whole, I enjoyed the story. I liked that Kit was a reluctant assassin who felt a bit more like a golden retriever personality than a stone-cold assassin energy I expected going into the book. His only real goals are protecting those he loves, and he is the guy who will do what he has to do to protect them. Gentry feels like a real person who can be both hard and soft, wicked and shy, and is smart enough to know when to ask for help. One thing I especially appreciated was that, at some point, there was a very easy lack of communication trope that felt like it was being set up - aka one would keep important information from the other, but instead, the first actual chance they had, they talked about it. I think I actually said “oh thank god!” when that happened, because it always seemed like an easy way to cause unnecessary drama.
I felt the plot twists were worth the wait, and everything came together nicely. It also set up what most likely is the next book right at the end.
There is a slow-burning romance, which I feel is necessary with enemies to love romances, though there was a clear attraction pretty early on.

Gentry Greenbriar has been locked up in the Curse Ward for years. Her deadbeat father, a witch and conman who taught her everything she knows about running a con, is responsible for her forced imprisonment. Cursed to constantly siphon an unscrupulous with politician's pain she will devise a plan to escape. All she has to do is to sell her location to the highest bidder then capture the assassin sent to kill her. Kit is the witch responsible for systematically eradicating every member of the coven responsible for attacking his own coven and killing their leader, a man he thought of as a father and his ex-girlfriend's father. After eliminating the other coven Kit wants out, but his ex has promised his services as an assassin to the city of Skadra’s most powerful coven. His assignment is to murder a girl with no magic and who is locked up in a hospital. What he never expected to happen though was to find his free will stolen by his target who has used an ancient ritual.

I loved these characters, especially the diabolically clever Gentry and her ingenious means of escaping her captivity. All of the characters in this book are compelling and unique and kept me engaged in this fantastic and entertaining read. Magic, mayhem, murder, suspense, and unexpected twists and turns in the plot made it impossible to put this book down. This is a steamy paranormal romance and a must-read in my opinion, and I recommend this author’s work to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by Hidden Gems.

Witty Conwomen, Witch Assassins, and a Scene-Stealing Ghost Fox
To Catch a Witch Assassin is a sophisticated debut that masterfully executes the "enemies-to-lovers" trope within a world of high-stakes coven intrigue. The story follows Gentry, a brilliantly crafty, non-magical conwoman, and Kit, the witch assassin tasked with her murder. While the narrative begins at a measured pace, it quickly evolves into a tense game of cat and mouse fueled by three wishes and dangerous debts.
Szalay handles the central relationship with great care, favoring an organic, slow-burn development and a delicious undercurrent of sensual tension over a rushed plot. The character progression is excellent, supported by sharp world-building and a mystery surrounding Gentry’s soulbound condition that keeps the reader actively engaged. Though the leads are compelling, special mention must be made of Merle—the hilariously abrasive ghost fox who frequently steals the scene with his costumes and attitude.
With unexpected twists and a deeply satisfying conclusion, this is a standout fantasy read that proves Victoria Szalay is an author to watch. The escalating action and heart make this journey absolutely worth the wait.
Content Warning: This story contains depictions of violence, debt collection, and mild profanity.
My sincere thanks to the author for providing an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.

There’s something about stories that mix magic with danger that always pulls me in, and this one definitely leaned into that combination.

The idea of a witch and an assassin colliding in the same story creates a really interesting tension right from the start. Neither side feels predictable, which made the plot feel like it was constantly shifting just enough to keep me curious about where things were going next.

What stood out to me most was the atmosphere of the book. It carries this underlying sense of risk and secrecy — like every decision the characters make could tip the balance in a completely different direction. That tension gives the story a darker edge that works really well with the fantasy elements.

I also appreciated that the romance didn’t completely overpower the story. Instead, it threads through the plot while the bigger stakes continue to build around it.

For me, this landed at 4 stars because while I really enjoyed the premise and the tension, I would have loved just a little more time exploring certain character motivations. A bit more depth there could have made the emotional moments hit even harder.

Still, this was a really engaging fantasy read with magic, danger, and a storyline that keeps you guessing.

If you enjoy:

• witches and magic systems

• assassin characters

• darker fantasy vibes

• romance woven into a dangerous plot

then this one is definitely worth checking out.

I received an advance copy of this book prior to publication. This review reflects my honest opinion.

This was my first time reading a book set in a fully imaginary world, and I’ll admit that I struggled a bit in the beginning to fully visualize it in my mind’s eye. The story has a slightly slow start, but once it settles into its rhythm, it becomes absolutely worth it.

There isn’t a lot of spice in this book, but there is a delicious undercurrent of sensual tension between the MMC, Kit, and the FMC, Gentry, which I really enjoyed. Their dynamic develops gradually and feels organic rather than rushed.

There is a constant sense of mystery surrounding Gentry’s situation and her soulbound condition, and I found myself actively piecing together how it all fit into the larger story. The intrigue, tension, and drama between the covens are especially compelling and kept me fully engaged throughout.

I genuinely loved the lead characters and how well their personalities complement each other. That said… I completely fell in love with Merle, the ghost fox — particularly his costumes and his gloriously asshole attitude. He absolutely stole every scene he appeared in, and I would love to read a future book centered on him.

Overall, this is a strong and engaging fantasy read with captivating coven politics, slow-burn tension, and memorable characters. I’m very glad I had the chance to read it ahead of publication.

Oh, what fun! I was not sure where the story was going at times, and that made reading it even better. Gentry is far from an FMC that sits on the sidelines or waits and hopes others solve her problems for her. She is relentless, very clever, and willing to do anything for those she cares about. I felt bad for the situations she was forced into, because every ‘solution’ had the risk of worse problems. For being magic-less, she played the witch assassin, Kit, quite well, and magically trapped him to do her bidding. Kit has a large sense of loyalty to those he has known for a long time, even if they do not deserve it at all. He is a charmer for sure, using his brain and not relying on his well-known, fearsome strength; both magical and physical. The way they tease and tempt each other was entertaining, the storyline has many layers you get invested in, and the book was over before I was ready to end my time with these two characters. I hope there really will be another book, likely centered around another character, and I can have a dose of Kit and Gentry again.

This book was a delight to read. The author's explanation of the universe and its inherent magic was exceptional. Certain elements of the writing brought to mind Brent Weeks "Lightbringer" series. The book contains all the elements of a fantastic story: love, magic, tension, intrigue, and a truly despicable antagonist. The two main characters, Gentry and Kit, are to relate to. Their ability to transform their past trauma into something that serves them, felt authentic.

Gentry: A tenacious woman with a stubbornness to rival a bull. Her impressive computer skills and keen intelligence make her invaluable. Her proclivity to dive headfirst into chaotic situations didn’t stop her from coming out on top. When it comes down to it, she is the hero of this story.

Kit: A proficient and highly intelligent magic wielder is a fierce protector of those he cares about. He has enough street smarts to be able to navigate tricky situations. His battle-worn past really accentuates his personal growth. He is the perfect partner for Gentry.

This is a first time author read for me. It did start off, kind of slow and then just flipped me on my head and the suspense was progressing. I’m struggling to figure out what to write in this review without giving a synopsis and giving it away. ( I despise reviews like that ) At the back of the book it says “Victoria Szalay can’t sit still when she reads a good book. Whenever a scene takes a turn, she sets the book down, turns the music up, and then runs around her house imagining all the ways it could’ve gone sideways. (It drives her family crazy.)” and that perfectly describes how I read this book. Things would take a turn and I’d have to put it down and play a game on my phone or had something I needed to do an appointment or go to bed or something. I didn’t want it to be over and I wasn’t ready to find out what happened next. I wasn’t bored. I was so curious but I just wasn’t ready to continue, because it brought me closer to the end of the book. Although we end with my despised friend cliffy, I cannot wait for the next book to come out and find out what happens!

**Thank you Victoria for the ARC! I am obsessed**

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

To Catch A Witch Assassin completely pulled me in from page one. This is very much a “one more chapter” book that turns into staying up way too late and having zero regrets. This story felt different, new in a good way.

The magic is dark and dangerous, the stakes are high, and the tension never lets up. The FMC Gentry is smart, resilient, and refreshingly human—strong without being invincible. And the assassin, Kit? Morally grayish, complicated, and impossible not to fixate on. I believe I have a new book boyfriend. The chemistry between them is chef’s kiss—slow-burn, loaded, and deliciously tense.

Victoria Szalay’s writing is atmospheric and sharp, balancing action, emotion, and character beautifully. This is the kind of story that makes you want more after you’re done.

If you love witches, assassins, morally gray characters, and tension you can feel, this one is absolutely worth the read. Devoured it. No notes. 🖤🔥

I was given this book as an ARC read, and I truly enjoyed it. Szalay does an amazing job creating a dystopian fantasy with glimmers of reality right beneath the surface.

Gerty, a cursed human, has spent the last five years plotting her revenge against a father who sold her freedom for a gambling debt.

Kit, is a fixer for his coven, but he is tired of cleaning up the trail of chaos that his ex leaves behind her. This is his last job and he’s leaving town. At least until Gerty and Kit’s paths cross and both their plans are blown up.

Early in the story, the lines are drawn and the sides are clear. However, in this emotionally charged story it is full of twists and turns. The characters are full dimensional, creating empathy and understanding as Gentry finds her way back to herself. You want to hate them but realize that everyone has their own curse and they are all fighting for freedom.

This story out with our FMC plotting an escape from her captors. With a spotty memory from what happened to her and a curse she's trying to break. Our MMC is a witch just doing his best in a bad situation and being stuck with the woman he's supposed to kill....things couldn't be worse.
The author gave use a fast paced dual pov fantasy. There is a lot of potential for world building and great character stories. The unexpected twists, witch coven dynamics, and little spice made this a fun read. I do feel there was a little unnecessary repetition surrounding the MMC ex girlfriend which was slightly annoying but overall it didn't take away much enjoyment for me.
I can't wait to see where this author take sus in this series next. I will be looking out for other books from her.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and it definitely won’t be my last Victoria Szalay read!

I fell in love with the main characters. Their personalities and development throughout the story are really well written. I finished this book in just two sittings as I couldn’t put it down! The spice level is just right and the romance feels natural alongside the action.. The plot is clever, with a few surprises that kept me hooked from start to finish! I especially loved the world building, the city of Skadra and its magical elements felt immersive and I could picture everything clearly as I read. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy with a romance weaved in. I can’t wait to read more from Victoria! Thank you for allowing me to read your work, you have a new fan!

This was my first read by Victoria Szalay, and I truly enjoyed it. While the story takes a little time to fully unfold, the background and world-building are important, so staying the course is absolutely worth it.

For readers who love witches and strong female leads, this book delivers. The FMC is a total badass from beginning to end, and the MMC certainly met his match. The plot is filled with twists, turns, and intense life-or-death moments that keep the story engaging and unpredictable.

The book includes a touch of spice, but it’s well written and complements the storyline rather than distracting from it. The ending provides closure without leaving the reader hanging, while still offering enough suspense to hint at a possible sequel.

Overall, this was a great read, and I would happily pick up more books by this author.

I r we any enjoyed reading this book I could not put it down from the first chapter all the way through to the last!

It is about a cursed human who when living with her father was a con woman and soon became cursed. She meets who is a witch that accepted a job to kill her to try and protect his friend.

I loved the character growth for the two characters separately and together. It was a well written story that was well paced with great descriptions that made you feel like you was part of the story.

I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

We have our main FMC plotting to escape her captors and it just takes off from there. The skadra world was interesting because you have these different covens that fight each other but they're also protected from monsters outside the barrier. There was a bit of repetition mentioning his ex in the same room so I felt that could've been smoothened out more or less mentioned. Overall It was fast paced, tension, and with a little bit of fine tuning this world with some side character stories could be a good continuation.

I really enjoyed To Catch A Witch Assassin.
I loved our FMC Gentry, the magic free, witty, scheming, intelligent, slightly bad ass woman who is also vulnerable and funny.

I enjoyed the twists and turns and while it took me a few days to get into it I couldn’t put it down as the characters grew on me.
I loved the development of our FMC & MMC’s relationship, where can I get my own Kit?

The character development & friendships in the last half of the book really got me really wanting to know what’s next!

I loved it! I could tell the author put work into the world building and her characters. Gentry and Kit are stressful to follow around but it is SO worth it. Gentry is cursed, Kit is a witch sent to kill her. It clearly doesn't go so well for mister top assassin, so after some "convincing " they head off to try to break her curse, and deal with some other problems along the way. Visha? The worst. Wren? bestie! Merle? What a weird Lil guy.. I think I've said more than enough!! Read it!

So, the Story follows FMC Gentry, a young non magic user con woman who’s been cursed. She is intelligent and does her research as to how to escape the prison she’s been subjected to for 5 years. Kit the Killer MC is caught and bound to Gentry by 3 favors. The MC is a golden retriever but oh so deadly. While the twists and turns of discovering the truth vs what was believed to be reality keeps you on edge. The chemistry between the FMC and the MC builds through the book.

I received this books as an advance reader copy overall it’s great book it has a lot of potential. What really dropped the rating for me is that it’s all written in the third person which was rough to get you hooked. The storyline is great and personally I think it would be so much better if it were written in first person. It’s makes it feel more personal and is easier to understand the feelings and vibes of characters. If the writing point of view isn’t a deal breaker for you then this is definitely a good book for you!

Gentry is the daughter of a male witch & she has been locked down in a 'hospital' for 3 years. When she finally manages to break out, it is with the forced help of a witch assassin who was supposed to terminate her. Too bad she made him her slave.
Forced proximity drives Gentry crazy, until she realizes that Kit isn't nearly the horrible person she thought he would be.
This is a fascinating story about witches & their lives, tricks, potions and family drama.
I absolutely loved it!

This book follows Gentry, a magic-less human in search to break a curse. This book was very easy read, perfect for someone dipping their toes into paranormal/ fanasty. While it did have a slow start for me, i loved where we ended up. I had such a fun time while reading this book, enemies to lovers, reverse harem, & witches??? What more could you ask for! I am anticipating reading more from Victoria Szalay. Following these characters as well as the supporting characters through this first part of how to Catch a assassin had me coming back for more and having the same feeling at the conclusion of the book of the cliffhanger making me need more.

This book completely surprised me in the best way. The characters are sharp, the twists land hard, and the story balances dark fantasy with emotional depth so well. Gentry is a fascinating FMC, and the curse, magic, and moral gray areas kept me hooked the entire time. Victoria Szalay delivered a gripping, unforgettable read and I’ll absolutely be picking up more from her. I received and ARC and this post is completely voluntary and honest.
