Misted Pines #5

The Woman from Nowhere: Misted Pines, Book 5

Rate this book
After a heartbreaking betrayal, Mabel Adams reinvents herself for the fourth time. Regardless of the alarming reputation of the deceptively sleepy town of Misted Pines, she decides to move all the way across the country to start yet again.

Mabel has a one-night stand with a mountain man who rocks her world in bed but doesn’t tell her his name.

The next day, after receiving a threatening note from her neighbors, she discovers she’s living next to an extremist cult where the women go in and are never seen again.

After serving, former Navy SEAL Hutch Hutchison is living a peaceful life on his patch in the mountains outside Misted Pines. He’s been burned so many times by women, he’s happy to train his guard dogs, play his guitar, live remote, and most of all, quiet.

Until he hooks up with a beautiful woman who lives just down the way. And then he discovers she’s been threatened by the cult next door.

Hutch’s protective instinct sparks, and he decides his next mission is to keep Mabel safe at all costs.

But there’s something even hinkier about that cult than Hutch or local law enforcement expect.

As Hutch executes the riskiest mission of his life—keeping Mabel safe at the same time keeping both of their hearts intact—Hutch and the Sheriff’s Department try to unravel the mystery of The Lion and The Lamb before it’s too late.

Because Mabel is in their crosshairs.

And Hutch is not about to allow her to disappear.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

The Woman From Nowhere Kristen Ashley
The Woman From Nowhere by Kristen Ashley
Book 5 in the Misted Pines Series
Romantic Suspense. Can possibly stand alone but there are a lot of previous characters.
Thank you to Kristen Ashley and her team for an early copy of this book for review.

“Even sex scandals, serial killers, psychopath shenanigans, shifty sheriffs and shady cult leaders who got away (so far) didn’t dim the magic of Misted Pines. It seemed there was nothing to dim the magic of Misted Pines.”

The Misted Pines series by Kristen Ashley started out more like thrillers with romance, but The Woman From Nowhere , the fifth in the series, leans much more into romantic suspense, with the romance taking center stage and the thriller elements a little more in the background.

Mabel Adams has been living in Misted Pines for a while, renting a secluded cabin with a workshop where she refurbishes old items to sell in her store, The Groove (love the name), in downtown Misted Pines. One night, she heads to a local bar with a very sexy, very big guitar player and takes him home for a night of fun. He leaves a thank-you note on her pillow, and she assumes that’s the end of it.

But someone saw them.

And that someone leaves a creepy note on her porch, making it clear she is being watched and bringing home strange men is not acceptable.

What Mabel does not realize is that a religious cult lives on the neighboring property. The police advise her to get an alarm system, cameras, and a big, scary dog. She finds a dog she loves named Tonks, but she needs a trainer to turn him into a protector. Unfortunately, the local dog trainer is a complete jerk on the phone. When they meet in person, she realizes the jerk is the same guy who left that note on her pillow and walked out like it was nothing.
“Are you always this much of a dick?” I demanded.
He stepped away from me but didn’t lose eye contact. “Nope,” he said casually. “It only comes out when I got a woman on my hands with more sass than sense.”

And just like that, we are back in classic Kristen Ashley territory with a protective alphahole hero, a sassy and likable heroine, a strong friend group, and a whole lot of animals stealing scenes.

Since this is the fifth book in the Misted Pines series, there are a lot of returning characters. Even though I have read the earlier books, my menopausal ADHD brain struggles to keep everyone straight. This has become a recurring issue for me with Kristen Ashley’s books. She writes large casts with crossover characters, and as the series grows, it can get overwhelming to track them all. That said, her writing and her characters always pull me in.

I write my reviews so that it triggers my memory of a book (it’s a big reason my reviews are this long), so about a third of the way through, I went back and re-read my reviews for the earlier Misted Pines books. That helped a lot. And honestly, this poor town has been through so much already. I kept thinking, what else could possibly happen in this crazy town?

Once we learn about Mabel’s past and Hutch’s (a former SEAL) background which isn't much better, it becomes very easy to root for them. I also loved that once they commit to each other, they stay solid. The conflict and action come from the cult storyline rather than relationship drama, which worked really well for me.
“She could be real. Or she could be an illusion. He knew one thing: if she was an illusion, he’d break in a way that couldn’t be fixed. But now, after tonight, he had an even bigger worry. Because now, he knew, if he lost her, for all intents and purposes… Just like his dad… His life would be over.”

Kristen Ashley has a way of turning her biggest jerks into the best heroes. She really does feel like magic when she does that, and The Woman From Nowhere delivers that signature Kristen Ashley romance feel.
“It was shit. Pure shit. I met good people along the way. There were fun times. But my whole life was shit, Hutch. Until I met you.”

Likes:

•Kristen Ashley’s writing style pulls me in every time. Her books feel like comfort reads and always feel like coming home.
•Seeing returning characters and crossovers from previous books and series.
•This book leans more into romance than earlier Misted Pines books, which I really enjoyed.
•The characters are incredibly likable and easy to connect with.
•Hutch is a dog trainer, so there are a lot of dogs and puppies with meaningful roles in the story, along with Mabel’s cat.
•Kristen’s descriptions are vivid and immersive. I can always picture everything clearly.
•I know some people don’t like it, but because I agree with her so much, I like how she subtly brings in her left-leaning beliefs into her stories. It just makes her characters more likable and relatable.
•I also like her choice to write the female POV in first person and the male POV in third person.

Dislikes:

•At this point in the series, there are a lot of characters to keep track of, and I do find myself mixing them up at times.
•Sometimes a character is mentioned briefly early on and then reappears much later, and I struggle to remember who they are. I often have to use the lookup feature to find their introduction. A small reminder in those moments would help keep me in the story.
•This town has been through so much. It really deserves a break.

The Down & Dirty:
The Misted Pines Series by Kristen Ashley started off as thrillers with romance, but has turned into more of a typical romantic suspense series. Kristen writes with a LOT of characters and a lot of detail, so as per usual with her recent books, I had some trouble remembering all the characters, and found myself using the lookup tool to review who each character is. It helped a lot to re-read my reviews of the previous books in the series to refresh my memory.

But that didn’t really detract from my love of Kristen’s writing. Her characters are just so likable that all you want is for them to find their HEA. I loved Mabel, and quickly got over Hutch’s alpha-hole behavior and fell for him as well. The quirky town of Misted Pines is like another character in the book and it was fun to visit the town again. All-in-all, I think this romance may have been my favorite in the series (I think I say that after every book), but the sheer number of characters held me back from becoming fully immersed and enthralled. Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVED it, but my menopausal ADHD brain would benefit from some subtle reminders of who people are.

If you love a protective hero, a strong heroine, and a small town full of chaos and heart, The Woman From Nowhere delivers exactly what you want. Kristen Ashley always gives me characters I care about, and this one reminded me why I keep coming back to her books.

I really really wasn't feeling it. I also didn't appreciate having a pet named after a Harry Potter character or the brief comment about someone being mentally deficient or having a learning disability because they refused to understand something.

KA, I know you can do better. It's not 2011 anymore.

The Woman From Nowhere had me locked in from the very first chapter!!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a free advance copy. Thank you to the author and her team. All opinions are my own and given freely.

Mabel hasn't had an easy life. She's starting anew again for the fourth time, this time across the country and in Misted Pines. And with her luck, it comes to no surprise that she finds herself living next door to an extremist cult who appears to have her in their sights. Enter Hutch. Former Navy SEAL and dog trainer, he's happy to live his life of solitude. That is until the one night he spends with Mabel turns into more when he learns she's in danger.

I was a goner for Hutch with the first words he spoke. I knew I was in for a 'man of few words' alpha who would make me giddy with all his protective instincts... and I was not wrong. He also plays guitar and sings. And rocks a moustache. He couldn't have been described more perfectly for me. But surly he could be and I loved how Mabel let him have that. While standing her ground also. She was the sun to his cloudy day. The soft to his gruff. They had a connection from the start. A lust forsure. But it grows so much deeper. They connect in many ways. In past experiences. And just fit so well. I loved watching this surly man's walls come down. It made me giddy. And they certainly can light the pages up too, if you know what I mean!

There's mystery and suspense. There's action that had my heart pumping. That one scene-iykyk-was so intense!! But there's also tender moments and humor too. Their back stories aren't easy ones, so do seek out TW's if needed. Even if not on page, the mentioning of the past shook me at times. But my gosh did I just LOVE this book. So well rounded. It felt like coming home. That's how a Kristen Ashley book feels for me. Like coming home.

This series has become another one of my favorites from the author. I love all the mystic town setting vibes and history. All the amazing side characters that pop in from book to book. Harry and Rus, as well as Riggs who pop in and bring so much extra swoon. Dang, I love these men Kristen Ashley creates! And the found family she creates too. She never misses on this and it only makes her books extra special!

This is the 5th book in the series but you could absolutely jump in and read it as a standalone easily! And I highly recommend that you do!

I really enjoyed this one.
Best to read the series in order as there are references to events from other book, town history which may spoil earlier books and previous characters introduced appear.

At the start KA warns that this book could have some triggers. This is because the storyline centres on the heroine's neighbours who are part of a religious cult, a bit of an unknown, but possible trafficking and rape, though no details.
There isn't any huge ansgt moments between the couple other than them both taking the step to make it official. No third act breakup.
Both have been through the mill with relationships so neither is really interested in getting involved again so they are both wary.
No on page ex-drama, he relays his past disasters and she does the same. We hear from her friends were she lived previously about her ex.
The Hero is the dog trainer from a previous book in the series so we get lots of puppy/dogs on page plus a cat.
The author does preach a bit, i felt, her views on several things, I'm not saying I disagree but I'm not sure I want it in a romance/mystery.
Plenty of breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series.
HEA.

Quickish Review

I’ve loved Kristen Ashley for a long time and she one of two auto buy authors I have. So that puts my review in context. For a romantic suspense, this is much more romance, much less suspense. The earlier books were much more suspense focused. I’m not mad at it, and I love the found family aspect that KA brings to all her stories. But I wasn’t a big fan of the suspense and the final climactic scene still was kind of weak since they were such a small part of the story overall.

So if you’re into a small town character based romance with a touch of suspense, that’s what this is.

Listened via audio…..a 4 star from me….with all the usual KA charm…. Lovable characters ✔️ strong female lead ✔️ rugged alpha hero ✔️ a bit humour and overall a page turning story line ✔️.

Yes this has all the charm of the old KA with a bit of suspense thrown in and of course some spice. No over the top anxiety either.

4 stars, only because I really wanted some extra dram from the heroines ex….i was almost waiting for it but it just never appeared. Lovely epilogue though ensuring my must have HEA.

The fifth book in the series. Mabel Adams moved to Misted Pines and rented a place next to a cult, apparently. She receives a threatening note after a one night stand and takes it to the police. They recommend a dog and is given info on a local dog trainer. Enter Hutch, one night stand and dog trainer.
I love this series bunches. I see rereads in the future. Love the characters including side characters like Abigail, Emma, Mrs. Matthews, and others.

LOVEEEDDDDDD this one! I keep saying each book is my favorite but this might just for real be it now.

Mabel is trying to start over in a new town. She has a tragic past and is trying to escape it all where no one knows who she is. One night out she's adventurous and takes home a stranger for the night. She disappointed in how he leaves the next morning but of course she's thrown into his path again when she needs someone to assist in training a dog for protection after receiving a threatening note on her porch. This brings her to the mystery man, known as Hutch. As Mabel is trying to immerse herself in her new town and be social she grows closer to Hutch because he just can't help but stick close to her to protect her. But obviously there's more to that and they can't deny the attraction for long.

Hutch and Mabel stole my heart in this one. They both have tragic pasts and they know how to handle each other with care. I adored this small town and how they take Mabel in and protect her. There's lots of suspense that kept me hooked and the ending results gave me chills as it all ended. This one will keep you hooked from the start with all of it's drama and heartache, but don't let that deter you, it's also so full of humor and heartwarming moments that will have you swooning.

Thank you to Kristen Ashley and team for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

The word THANKS takes on a whole new meaning at the beginning of this book. *side eye*

Mabel, who has a dark past and is getting a better future in Misted Pines, get a strange note from her distant neighbors that has some people taking interest. A one night stand slowly turns into something more with Hutch, who trains doggies, and said man has been burned out twice by love.

With some suspense and a whole lotta love, you get another good edition to this series.

And for my Rock Chicks...the smile I had when Hutch was on a phone call with a certain .

Didn’t finish.

I might go back to it but honestly, I probably won’t.
Around the halfway mark, my attention really started to drift. It felt like chapter after chapter was filled with storylines and side characters that didn’t meaningfully contribute to the main plot, which made it hard to stay focused.

That said, this does feel typical of Kirsten Ashley’s more recent books. Though her earlier work held my attention much better, especially because the characters, particularly the male leads had such a strong, compelling presence.

I skimmed a bit from here and there. I wished for a bit more mystery or some conflict or something, but it was all a bit flat and meh for me. The romance part was really underwhelming and the criminal/mystery part was even more so... It was generally a well-written book, don't get me wrong, and if you haven't read a ton of KA's books befre then you really might enjoy it. I guess the biggest problem for me was that there was really nothing new or exciting.

I knew it from the first song I heard him sing. He was the biggest risk I ever took. But he was the only risk that was worth anything.

You can't see me right now but just know that I am giddily clapping my hands and kicking my feet because OMG this book hit the spot just right. But then again, I haven't met a KA book that didn't. But this one in particular just did it for me. Maybe it was that I was in exactly the right mood for me. Maybe because it was one of those addictive swoony romances. Or maybe it was a combo of both. Whatever the case may be, I came for the vibes and I stayed for the story. And I loved every part about it!
Are you always this much of a dick?” I demanded.
He stepped away from me but didn’t lose eye contact. “Nope,” he said casually. “It only comes out when I got a woman on my hands with more sass than sense.”

What's a girl to do when her one night stand not only ghosts her but turns out to be your new dog trainer? And you need said dog trainer after you get a dog for protection because you have some super kooky neighbors who may or may not be a cult living next to your property and judging you by leaving oddly threatening notes on your door. Well, if you're Mabel, you buckle up for the ride is what you do. Oh and you also adopt a sweet husky named Tonks who also loves to be bossed around by your grumpy one night stand turned dog trainer.
Quiet,” Hutch ordered a still-howling Tonks with so much authority in his tone, even I was thinking I wouldn’t utter a word for the next two days. For sure Tonks shut up and sat down.

Oh and said one night stand is also retired SEAL. So there's that. YUM. But I digress.

Ranger Emmett “Hutch” Hutchison is a mouthful in every sense of the word. *wagges eye brows*. He's also your typical KA tortured MMC and I loved the hell out of him. He's all loe wolf until he finds out that the one night stand he can't seem to get out of his mind is in danger. And then he's all growly, overly protective, manly intensity and OMG I was obsessed.

This is a man who has been through it and his heart can't take any more so he's given up on relationships. They're just not meant to be for him and his history.

Mabel comes with a story of her own and this poor woman has been through it herself. But instead of letting it take over, she's allowed it to bloom her into her new self. She was such a well rounded, even keeled, self assured FMC and I absolutely adored her. She's take charge and doesn't stand for any non sense. But she also allows her vulnerability to shine through in spite of what she's been through. I couldn't think of a better match for Hutch.

There is an underlying element of suspense that is weaved into the romance but the romance was primary. I adored it. I binge read it in one day and never wanted it to end. And while I love a bit of drama with a third act breakup, this one had none of that. Just two people slowly healing each other and their relationship growing and evolving organically in the best of ways.

If you're looking for a swoony and steamy romance with a grumpy MMC and sunshine FMC with a splash of suspense, look no further! I can't wait for more in this series!

4 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I knew it from the first song I heard him sing. He was the biggest risk I ever took. But he was the only risk that was worth anything

The Woman from Nowhere is the fifth instalment in the adult contemporary romance series, Misted Pines. Each novel follows a separate couple but exists in the same world. Written in dual third person POV the story follows Mabel and Hutch as what was once meant to be a one night stand turns into so much more where they discover not only are they neighbours but that an extremist cult nearby begins to stir things up in the area. Mabel and Hutch both have scars that make them afraid to try again...but what if to truly find the home they've needed they need to band together to unravel the secrets of the cult nearby before one of them disappears.

This is Kristen Ashley in all her fun!

Mabel is a woman with a secret past that is meaningful and I loved unravelling it. She is kind and open and curious and I was rooting for her to find what she needs. Hutch is a scarred SEAL veteran whose passion for animals is endearing but, by no means, obscures the fact he is gruff. I loved watching him slowly melt for Mabel and I loved Mabel meeting Hutch head on with banter.

“Are you always this much of a dick?” I demanded…
“Nope,” he said casually. “It only comes out when I got a woman on my hands with more sass than sense.”

In terms of spice I would say 3 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are about 7 spicy scenes in this book with the first appearing around the 35% mark. Spice ranges from explicit and detailed to vague references. There is an immediate spark between the two characters and they jump into bed quickly but the romance takes time to solidify. I liked seeing the tense element of the cult nearby bringing them together for safety and discovery. The relationship moves fast and that is on par with Kristen's books. They are so comfortable together and I loved every intimate moment and slices of life.

The story itself is predominantly character driven with an overarching plot going on. Hutch and Mabel are navigating a growing connection that they initially deny, Mabel is trying to find her sense of place in the town with new friends, and Hutch is keeping a pulse on the police as they investigate what is happening with the nearby cult. I like to focus on the pets and their training to help bring our characters together. I enjoyed the found family element that helped make this a home and the emotional intimacy that grows between Hutch and Mabel that allows them to be vulnerable. I was, admittedly, expecting some more ex drama based on our character's past but it really didn't go anywhere. The cult was intriguing and I would have liked more of that investigation to be brought forth. The twist at the climax was surprising and as Mabel even says it's a little confusing why that happened. The epilogue is cute and fits KA's vibe.

Overall, another Kristen Ashley classic!

Thank you to the author for this arc!

4.25stars- THE WOMAN FROM NOWHERE is the fifth instalment in Kristen Ashley’s contemporary, adult MISTED PINES romantic suspense series focusing on the people and small town of MISTED PINES, set in the author’s numerous interconnected series. This is former US Navy SEAL turned animal rehabber and trainer Ranger ‘Hutch’ Hutchison, and thirty-one year old, refurbisher Mabel Adams’ story line. THE WOMAN FROM NOWHERE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from first person perspective (Mabel) and third person (Hutch) THE WOMAN FROM NOWHERE follows in the wake of a one-night stand wherein Mabel was ghosted with a Post-It Note but Mabel lived on the land adjoining a questionable cult known as The Lion and The Lamb, and Mabel would become the target of a threatening note. Not one to sit back, Mabel informed the local sheriff’s office, and to her shock, her one-night stand would become guardian and protector. Enter former US Navy SEAL Hutch Hutchison, and the man with whom Mabel will fall in love. As local law enforcement continued to look into The Lion and The Lamb, Mabel would find herself falling for a man who own history was almost as dark as her own.

The world building is detailed and revealing as we are up close and personal with both Hutch and Mabel’s earlier years. From abuse to neglect, and questionable family dynamics, Mable and Hutch’s lives were anything but happy, molding the individuals they had become.

The relationship between Mabel and Hutch begins as a one-night stand that quickly turns into something more. Both agreeing to a friends with benefits relationship, their love affair went beyond a friendship, into a protective relationship in which both were willing to place themselves in the direct line of fire to safeguard the life of each other. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is another large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and familiar secondary and supporting characters including the return of several of the previous story line couples, and Mabel’s landlord Mrs. Matthews. The requisite evil has many faces.

THE WOMAN FROM NOWHERE is a story of secrets and heart break, obsession and madness, power and control, family and relationships, friendships and love. The character driven premise is captivating, dramatic and intricate; the romance is seductive and impassioned; the characters are charismatic, determined and desperate

The latest instalment in the Misted Pines series brings back a familiar figure, Hutch Hutchison, the reclusive dog trainer, and former navy seal who lives up in the mountains. Known for keeping to himself, he occasionally breaks the monotony with no-strings-attached, one-night stands, no names, no expectations. His most recent hook up is with Mabel Adams, a newcomer to the town. Like many who find their way there, she’s looking for a chance to escape her past and start over. Neither is looking for a lasting connection, but when Mabel finds herself under scrutiny and the recipient of vague threats after their night together, at the same time as whispers and unsettling rumours about the town’s local cult surface, all of Hutch’s protective instincts kick in. Although initially reluctant, he soon finds himself spending time with her, training the dog she recently adopted for protection, and gradually becoming more and more involved in her life.

Once again set in the eccentric mountain town of Misted Pines with its history of serial killers, murders and corruption, this time, the suspense takes a back seat to the romance, which is this book’s strongest element centring as it does on two slightly older protagonists who bring emotional baggage and hard-earned self-awareness to their relationship. Hutch embodies a quieter, less overtly dominant alpha male, which works well alongside Mabel’s guarded but resilient nature. Their connection unfolds in a way that feels natural and believable, shaped by mutual wariness and a shared history of pain. Their maturity allows them to recognise the significance of what they’re building together, giving the story a grounded and emotional depth.

That said, while the suspense thread centred around the cult known as The Lion and the Lamb - a group that makes the Amish seem progressive - adds an intriguing layer, it fades into the background for much of the story after initially acting as the catalyst in bringing Mabel and Hutch together. While it does resurface in a tense and compelling finale involving its leaders. a more consistent presence might have added a greater tension to the narrative. Even so, The Woman from Nowhere is still an engaging and heartfelt read, rich in emotional depth, with its well-drawn characters, and an evocative setting that makes for a welcome return to this series

Kristen Ashley Tackles Cults, a Navy SEAL, and a Heroine Who Won't Be Pushed Around
The Woman from Nowhere by Kristen Ashley is a romantic suspense that delivers exactly what you'd expect from Ashley—protective hero, strong heroine, intense chemistry, and danger that escalates fast.
Mabel Adams is reinventing herself for the fourth time after a heartbreaking betrayal. She moves all the way across the country to the deceptively sleepy town of Misted Pines, despite its alarming reputation. She has a one-night stand with a mountain man who rocks her world in bed but doesn't tell her his name and leaves her a post it note. The next day, after receiving a threatening note from her neighbors, she discovers she's living next to an extremist cult where the women go in and are never seen again.
Former Navy SEAL Hutch Hutchison is living a peaceful life on his patch in the mountains outside Misted Pines. He's been burned so many times by women, he's happy to train his guard dogs, play his guitar, and live quiet. Until he hooks up with Mabel and discovers she's been threatened by the cult next door. Hutch's protective instinct sparks, and he decides his next mission is to keep Mabel safe at all costs.
Both Hutch and Mabel have pasts that weigh them down, and it was interesting to pull back his layers. I love deeply wounded characters who overcome, and these two fit that bill. Their chemistry is intense, and I appreciated that Mabel doesn't let Hutch walk all over her. She's not some wilting flower waiting to be rescued—she's smart, capable, and pushes back when he gets too alpha.
The cult mystery is hinky in all the right ways. As Hutch executes the riskiest mission of his life—keeping Mabel safe while keeping both of their hearts intact—he and the Sheriff's Department try to unravel the mystery of The Lion and The Lamb before it's too late. Mabel is in their crosshairs, and Hutch is not about to allow her to disappear.
I love the Misted Pines world and all the characters. I look forward to reading more.
Ashley writes layered characters with real emotional stakes, and this romantic suspense has the heat and heart I expect from her. Solid.

Where can I find a sleepy but spooky small town like Misted Pines where irresistible alphas like Hutch live? I guess I have to be happy with my fictional one but I am happiest that Mabel Adams found it. Because she is a saint and deserves every good thing on earth. The Woman From Nowhere shows Kristen Ashley's expertise to combine a fascinating thriller plot with swoony andsizzling hot romance. An epic page turner with emotional perfection.

Mabel has moved to Misted Pines and opened her shop The Groove and she plans to stay in this lovely town. Far far away from her past trauma and drama. So she isn't thrilled when she finds a threatening note about her character at the doorstep of her rented cabin. She is even less thrilled when the local law enforcement let her know it might be from Lion and Lamb, an extreme Christian community not far away from her. She lives alone surrounded by trees and she is advised to get a dog along with security system. She gets the shock of her lifetime when the suggested dog trainer turns out to be Hutch Hutchinson aka the singer from the bar aka the one night stand who left a post it saying "thanks" on her pillow. Hutch had his fair share of bad experiences with women and Mabel is under his skin. Can they keep it friends with benefits while Hutch tries to keep her safe?

I think Kristen Ashley's thought process went something like this while creating Hutch and Mabel. Childhood trauma? Oh let's put a load. Relationship scars? Oh yes lots of it, make them broken and lost to the max. Awesomeness level? Make that max too! Because what do you mean Hutch and Mabel suffered and endured all those sh1tty things in their lives and still ended up being some amazing humans? Ex SEAL and now professional security dog trainer Hutch has high and specially reinforced walls around his heart. But he is openly protective and caring. He is a loyal friend, animal lover, great neighbor and great community member though he prefers his solitary life. He thinks he isn't good for Mabel and he forces himself to think that all this possessiveness is for her safety only but he was lying to himself thoroughly. Because Mabel isn't just beautiful and smart and sassy. She understands him effortlessly. His reasons, his passion, his issues...she gets them like they are her own. And she built something solid for herself too after all the trauma she didnt let it bring her down. She is brave and loving and adorable and just all around awesome. They healed their wounds together. All while fighting the bad guys. I love how close knit Misted Pines is despite the unique nature. The secondary characters were just epic. I love myself a Kristen Ashley alpha. So deliciously grumpy and brooding but so heart-warming soft and gone for his woman.

I knew Hutch was going to be my type the second he opened his mouth.

Broody mountain man. Former Navy SEAL. Lives alone with his dogs, his guitar, and his damage. Then Mabel crashes into town carrying the kind of past that leaves scars in places nobody can see, and suddenly this man who wanted peace decides his new life mission is keeping her safe.

And I ate it UP.

What I loved most about this book is that it gives you the full Kristen Ashley experience. Chemistry that bites. Banter with actual heat behind it. Two people who have both been through enough to know better but still find themselves pulled toward each other anyway. Mabel and Hutch both carry heavy histories, and watching them slowly let their walls come down felt so earned.

Also the setup is insane in the best way. One night stand with a hot stranger. New house in a sleepy mountain town. Then boom. Threatening note. Extremist cult next door. Women disappearing. And Hutch going full protective, growly, alpha problem about it.

He is deeply in his “I’ll handle it” era and unfortunately for me, that works.

Misted Pines keeps delivering that weird, eerie, addictive small-town energy where you know something is always wrong but you still want to move there and open a bakery. The suspense in this one was genuinely gripping and balanced so well with the romance. I wasn’t skimming one to get to the other. I wanted all of it.

And Kristen does what she always does best. She gives you a love story, a danger plot, a found family, and enough emotional payoff to make you sit there after the last page like you’ve just been spiritually reassembled.

Hutch is gruff, possessive, weirdly tender, and exactly the kind of mountain man Kristen Ashley was put on this earth to write.

I loved this one.

KA strikes again—with her best recently published series! Mabel and Hutch's story had it all.

Mabel is our latest protagonist to enter the sleepy—yet murderous—town of Misted Pines in the wooded Pacific Northwest. She's reinvented herself after tragedy, and she's ready to heal in peace with her refurbished furniture work, her quiet rural rental, and her isolated lifestyle.

All that changes when she lays eyes on Hutch singing in the local bar.

She locks eyes on Hutch. He clocks her. Sparks, immediate. And they have a night of passion.

The next morning, however... Mabel's life flips.

It starts with a hastily written "thanks" note from Hutch—making it clear their night was one-night only—that ruins her afterglow. It continues when there's a hateful biblical pamphlet on her front porch, complete with a handwritten note about loose-moraled women sleeping out of wedlock.

Oh, did we mention Mabel lives on property adjacent to a weird religious compound??

Yeah. Stuff's about to go down now, because those religious guys have Mabel on their radar. And despite not wanting to enter Mabel's life for his own reasons, former SEAL Hutch has a few opinions about this situation.

Cue the lights, camera, action!!

As one of Kristen Ashley's lucky early reviewers, I get the privilege of reading all of her works early. I like a select few of them, I love many more, and a handful of them reach that Top Tier, forever-obsessed category. (We all have different tropes, tastes, etc. so it's a good sign of her variety that there are ups and downs.)

So trust me when I say this as a seasoned KA fan: the Misted Pines series is one of her absolute best. The town, the setting, the aura, the character dynamics... this one has IT, that extra factor to it. It's fantastic.

I highly recommend new KA readers start with this series. You can start with this one, The Girl From Nowhere, if you want—but it's more fun if you start with Delphine and Cade in The Girl in the Mist.

Can't wait for the next Misted Pines !!

Thank you to the author for my early copy in exchange for an honest review.

The overall story was okay, I guess, but I still don't see a woman in her early 30s (like me) using words like rad, groovy, and fab. LOL. Maybe that's just me.

One thing I really appreciated was her tongue-in-cheek, but very obvious commentary on billionaires not being taxed adequately.

But, like most of Ashley's (& other American authors) military/police background MMCs, I constantly grit my teeth and roll my eyes. And I know I'll be stepping on toes and facing, if any, much negative feedback.

That said, I'm not calling only Ashley out; it just happens that she's one the authors I've always like reading and I'm tired of reading books that revere the US military. I, like many, have been waking up to what their regime has and is doing to the peoples of the world in the name of 'peace.'

Thank you to the author for the eARC as part of being in her Street Team.

I enjoyed this one!

Mabel moved to Misted Pines less than a year ago and is restarting her life again. She had a one night stand with a guitarist she met in a bar and was left a threatening note by her doorstep. A visit to the police station makes her realize that she is living next to a cult who has her in a radar..thus, leading her to connect with Hutch, a dog trainer who came highly recommended to only find that he was her one night stand. *ahemssss*

Urgh, I love their interactions with each other. KA’s female leads are always full of sass and Mabel is no different. Given that she and Hutch have their own kind of traumas that made them shy away from permanent relationships, they decided to be friends with ‘benefits’....Of course, little did they know that they would fall for each other so hard that their friends' assembly could even tell and was worried for them. Their chemistry sizzles and despite being opposites, they fit perfectly. I just love the small things he would do for her and she would do for him and they never made it a big deal to do it! Their backstories are so sad and given their trauma, you can’t help but feel for them.

There are also some suspenseful elements with the cult dealing with a climatic explosive scene making this a fun and nutty read! It also balanced itself with humor and some classic KA tender moments.

We also got some guest scenes from past characters of the Misted Pines community that we come to know and love.

Overall, I found this one to be a classic KA read full of banter and heartfelt moments. I felt like she toned down the descriptive settings and clothes leading it to be more of an emotional read.

5 SMOOCHES!

Another heart-pounding addition to Kristen Ashley’s Misted Pines series of romantic thrillers, The Woman From Nowhere was an unputdownable fusion of sizzling chemistry and sharp dialogue in an edge-of your-seat, suspense-filled storyline. The story kicked off with the no-names exchanged one-night stand between Hutch, a broody former Navy SEAL living a quiet life in the mountains, and his new neighbor, Mabel, who moved across the country to Misted Pines to re-invent herself after a heartbreaking betrayal. Following their incredibly hot night together, things get really complicated when Hutch finds out she’s being targeted by an extremist cult. Suddenly their sexy encounter unexpectedly evolves into a desperate fight for survival.

KA masterfully built their dynamic from scorching physical attraction into something far deeper through witty back-and-forth banter that revealed layers of vulnerability, trust and undeniable connection. The perfectly-paced mystery plot kept me guessing as Hutch and Mabel raced against time to outmaneuver her relentless pursuers. Told in KA's engaging and entertaining storytelling style, this novel delivered everything I crave in a Kristen Ashley romance—a love story that was messy, passionate and hard-earned. Gripping, steamy and totally satisfying, The Woman From Nowhere gets five smooches from me!

The Woman From Nowhere is the fifth book in the Misted Pines series by Kristen Ashley. This is Hutch and Mabel’s book.

This is such a great story. We were first introduced to Hutch in a previous book, so I’ve been curious about the broody former Seal who trains the dogs people buy and use for protection. Getting his story did not disappoint and I fell head over heels in love with the man. Hutch is a good guy who is respected and loved by his friends. Mabel is a also a good character. She’s no-nonsense and what you see is what you get.

Both Hutch and Mabel have been hurt in previous relationships. They are both scared and neither want to go through the same heartache again. It was great having a front seat to their friendship while watching them learn to trust and seeing how they were both falling but turning a blind eye to what was happening. They were so sweet together and I loved how they just fit into each others’ everyday lives. I especially loved that there were no intrusive friends who butted in trying to give advice and make them second guess themselves or their feelings. The friends that both Hutch and Mabel did have were true friends, who sat back and watched the same show I did.

There’s a side issue with the neighbors/cult, however the main focus in this story was the endearing romance between Hutch and Mabel. I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what happens next in Misted Pines.

5 stars. This series is really building for me. I enjoyed the first few books but have really loved the last book and this one. So it’s officially, new Misted Pines releases are at the top of my tbr.

The Woman From Nowhere is another book that has KA’s signature DNA all over it. Hutch is as alpha as they come… and given that he’s a former navy seal, the macho protector just oozes out of him. And we even get a some scenes where he gets to show off his skills, and damn! That man. Apparently we’ve met Hutch in previous books? But I didn’t remember him. Which basically means that The Woman from Nowhere can 100% be read as a standalone. I also really liked Mabel as a character, and again, she felt very KA. Girly, great cook, loyal friend, and like so many other KA heroines, finds herself in a potentially dangerous situation. All in all, I loved this one. Harry is still my number one mmc from this series, but Hutch was great. He and Mabel both had complex histories and they really complemented one another nicely. I’d been in a bit of a slump before starting this book (I started and stopped several), and I think it’s telling that from the first chapter, I was locked in and ready for more. But Kristen’s book always seem to do that for me.

Thank you to Kristen and her team for the early copy.
