John Christopher Frame is an author and a faculty member at an online university. He has lived internationally and holds a PhD from the University of Oxford. Publishers Weekly stated his first book, Homeless at Harvard: Finding Faith and Friendship on the Streets of Harvard Square, was “touching, and well worth the read…” John’s passion is combining his interests in theology and social concerns to help Christians become more aware of global issues so they can better live out their faith. He loves traveling on the cheap, visiting outdoor markets, balcony gardening, and working in quirky cafés in his neighborhood. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, whom he met while buying a carpet at a souvenir shop in Istanbul, Turkey. Connect with him at https://www.johnchristopherframe.com.
A beautiful and inspiring devotional that traverses over each of the 50 states. It is like "seeing" a highlight of each state without ever leaving your home. Some places I've been to (brings back memories), and some I have yet to visit, Each devotional then gives you something to reflect on, a verse, and ideas to pray about. This is a book I will reread often.
This book is a “cut above” most! If you enjoy traveling, seeing the United States, are interested in history or past events, you should enjoy reading this book. To top it off, if you are seeking spiritual understanding, building your faith, or searching for more than what daily life offers, it is a must read. The couple who developed this book (with their son) traveled for many years to see all 50 states. The three of them did a tremendous job of sharing at least one thing about a vacation spot or special place in each of the 50 states. They related events and places they visited to important comparisons about Biblical facts and how to apply them to one's personal life. This was written as a fifty-day devotional that will allow readers to meditate on the messages, one day at a time. (I read it faster to share a full experience with the book but have already started over, reading one at a time... enjoying them again.) When kept in thought, they encourage us to apply values, cares and needs to daily life. I sincerely believe this book's messages have the potential to change our lives for the better. We all can use that, can't we? I did receive an advanced copy from the authors and want to thank Gene, Marsha and John for a job well done. This is my honest review.
I'm constantly on the lookout for new devotional material, so when the author of one of my newsletters asked if anyone wanted to check out his new entry into the genre, I jumped at the chance. So far I am really enjoying it. You have all the standard elements of a devotional - story, takeaway, scripture and focus for prayer. The format is a bit different, however, as the story takes the lead, and you don't actually get the scripture until almost the end of the devotional. It's actually a refreshing change of pace. What I like even more is the fact that the stories are all real life tales of the author and his family, rather than just some random made up examples to go along with the scripture. I also appreciate the fact that each devotional is tied to a state, easily accessible through the table of contents. This gave me the opportunity to pick and choose the order I wanted to examine the states in. Overall, this is definitely a devotional I can see going through multiple times. And, as each one is only a couple of pages, you could even combine it with other materials or scripture study if you want to spend more time in God's Word.
Explore all 50 nifty United States through a journey closer to GOD with the Frame family! A six-decades-married couple—pastor husband (H. Frame) and teacher wife (Marsha Frame)—share devotionals, reflection questions, scripture passages and prayers with commentary from every single state in America! Their commentary includes history and descriptions of sites they visited, to take us on our own envisioned trips! I recommend reading one per day for a 50-day vacation or whenever you want to pursue a devotion destination. My personal favorites were the states where I’ve lived because they had special devotions that spoke to me: Indiana, California and Texas. An added bonus for the ebook is interactive material: digital video of their travels! Their son (John Christopher Frame)—an author and educator whose devotionals I have on my must-read list—wrote the introduction and conclusion. I appreciate receiving this ARC (advance reader copy)—which I read to write this review.
From Sea to Shining Sea is a beautifully crafted devotional that invites readers on a heartfelt journey across America—one that nourishes both the spirit and the soul. Drawing from the authors’ travels to all 50 states, each entry is personable, transforming iconic landscapes and quiet, unexpected moments into meaningful reflections on faith and God’s presence in everyday life.
The devotions are short yet impactful, making them perfect for daily reading while still offering depth through thoughtfully chosen Scripture, reflection questions, and prayer prompts.
The Frames write with sincerity and clarity, offering practical spiritual guidance that feels encouraging rather than prescriptive. Each devotion invites pause, gratitude, and renewed focus, helping readers see both the beauty of the country and the constancy of God’s love with fresh eyes.
Its 50 chapters (State-based) are very concise and easy to read.
Each one differs from the previous so each day’s reading (as an example) brings the reader a different thought to focus on.
I would recommend this devotional book. It may specifically be most enjoyable to an older demographic, for whom many personal memories would also be brought to the surface!
I have enjoyed reading From Sea to Shining Sea. Some of the landmarks mentioned in the chapters are places I have been. I liked the descriptions of places I hope to go! Part travelogue, part devotional, this is a delightful read for any Christian - but especially those who love to travel. The Bible verses shared and the spiritual thoughts associated with the places make this a unique read.
A Christian travelogue devotional written by John Christopher about his parents travels across all the 50 States in the USA. Entertaining anecdotes and interesting information about the places they visited over many years. John Christopher gives a verse and brief application/insight for each chapter/state. A wonderful book of calm and reflection. Recommend.
A very powerful read with 50 different verses for the 50 different states of America. They are short but powerful reads, they will also help you grow further. Powerful I received an advance copy from hidden gems and a journey to knowledge
An intimate walk through 50 states with a reflection and prayer for each day. You learn something new with every daily devotion. Received ARC copy and this is my honest opinion.
