Four generations of women (one is an infant, actually) born into lives that seemed cursed by poverty, patriarchy, and silence. Another woman, unrelated to the others, struggles with her own demons and becomes connected to one of the women through tragedy and an attempted rescue. This story takes place on a Caribbean island where the haves and the have nots seem to live entirely separate lives, but really are all threatened by an undercurrent of bad men, especially one who is married to Lala, the story's main character. This was an emotional, dark, and intense read. Trigger warnings for domestic violence, rape, and harm visited upon a child. Not a lot of dialogue, but the author did an excellent job of revealing what each character communicated and understood about things unsaid.
Loved everything about this book. So well written. Loved it!! I would definitely recommend. Thought the plot was great and really liked the characters.
Brutal!! Had a hard time to get into it, but once I did, it was hard to put down. I needed to know what happened! A sad, brutal story that left me unable to sleep.
