Sam Brannick is the author of dark crime fiction rooted in realism and moral consequence. His work examines violence not as spectacle, but as something that leaves scars—on victims, on investigators, and on the systems meant to protect them.
Really great police procedural—seems fitting too with all the news we’ve consumed this past month. Note there are trigger warnings in the book for a reason. I read this in one evening/to early morning because I couldn’t put it down. Seems this is a debut author so I hope we writes more.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I am actually shocked this is a debut author. It was a very tough subject matter and one that I am sure would upset some but MAN the writing was just so freaking good. I loved it. I can’t wait to read what this author comes up with next!
I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who reads on their work breaks, or as a daily routine or even before bed. Usually, I just end up back on TikTok or playing video games because books feel like a chore. I’ve read a few amazing books in my life—like The Hunger Games series—and let me tell you, The Darkness They See is on that level of storytelling and writing. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve felt addicted to a story, it changed my outlook on reading!
Sam Brannick’s writing is incredibly cinematic; I could see everything happening like a high-budget crime drama, and the momentum never lets up. I appreciated that the writing didn’t feel like the author was using "fancy" words just to look smart. It’s sharp, direct, and honestly pretty brutal. Following a detective in a Sexual Assault unit is a dark premise, but it felt important and handled with respect.
It’s not just a "whodunnit"—it’s a look at how much this work takes out of a person. I finished the whole thing in 10 days (fast for me!) because I had to know the ending, and it actually delivered. This book kept me off my phone for hours. Brannick gained a new follower with this one! I’m praying for more novels soon—truly incredible work.
If I could leave you with anything, it’s please read The Darkness They See by Sam Brannick, and when you do, when you love it, spread the word and post a review as everyone in the world should be reading this book stat, and oh, enjoy your read!!!
This book kept me captivated the whole read, which was surprising because I haven’t read a fictional crime/thriller novel in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed the theme, although heavy, I found it was carefully written with a realistic idea of true horror hidden in everyday life. The twists and turns kept the book fast paced and the characters were such a good mix to represent the true realities of the field, I felt right there in it. An overall great read!!
The Darkness They See is a fast paced Detective story that held my interest throughout. It's a difficult book to put down once you've started to read it. I recommend this book to anybody looking for a new author to follow. Sam Brannick is a rare talent and I hope he follows up this book with an entire series based on the main character Detective Roscoe Sager.
This is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps you guessing from start to finish. The detective investigates a series of disturbing crimes, the story unfolds with sharp pacing, layered suspense, and plenty of unexpected twists. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the story surprises you again. This novel is an impressive debut and a truly engaging read.
