"Bunka shigen" literally means "cultural resources." To my knowledge (and I did ask a few colleagues) "cultural resources studies" is not a common name for an established field of study in English as "bunka shigen gaku" has recently become in Japanese. However, the author draws (among others) on the fields of sound studies and media studies, which by now are well-established. For me it is a challenge to read about field that is a new to me in Japanese and I might at some point limit myself to "selected highlights," being most interested in the Japanese specifics. However, I'm intrigued about how phenomena once deemed vulgar, if they were considered at all, get elevated to the status of "culture" and even "music," such as "banana no tatakiuri no kôjô," the sales patter of the salesman flogging bananas at bargain sale.
