A young woman must face her fears and steal from the beast if she’s to save her father.
Calista Morgan knows the Elancia mine disaster wasn’t her father’s fault. Too bad no one else seems willing to believe it. After months of dead ends and stonewalled officials, she takes one final gamble and drives straight to the reclusive Stark estate—determined to find the truth herself.
Guided only by the cryptic texts of someone who calls himself “Cazador,” Calista has one night to slip past locked doors. One night to uncover the original plans. One night to prove her father’s innocence.
A Thorny Truth is more a Beauty & Beast prequel than an actual retelling. Here the reader is introduced to Calista Farrow who is trying to undo the tragic framing that has seen her father imprisoned and all hope gone until she receives an anonymous text directing her where to look.
This modern take adds a different layer to the story while mostly dismissing at the same time the Beast, although I have the feeling that he and the mysterious Cazador are one and the same. But as the story unravels, elements from the original bleed through quite noticeably, especially if you are looking for them.
All in all this is one retelling I would be interested in following, not just to see how the story unfolds but also to see how her father's trial affects the Beast's own legal issues.
This was a cute, unique, retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Set in modern times, Calista needs to prove her father's innocence after a tragic mining incident. As the head engineer, he received the blame when the mine collapsed. But Calista knows it wasn't his fault. She just has to prove it…. This was a quick read, and a really unique take on Beauty and the Beast!
