She broke my heart. Now she’s famous and saving my life.
EVIE
My ex–best friend and first love is a global pop star. I work late shifts at my hometown diner. Avoiding Kaia Rhee should be easy… until a demon crawls out of the TV and tries to kill me.

Kaia bursts through the back door, glowing and lethal, and saves my life. Now I’m marked, gagged by a magical NDA, and forced to play nice while her magical girl group uses my diner as a warded monitoring post.

The worst part? Kaia Rhee is the one girl I never got over—and she’s suddenly impossible to escape.

KAIA
The world sees a perfectly packaged pop star. They don’t know I hunt demons too.

Coming home is supposed to be strategy: contain the Chorus before the Harbor Lights Festival turns my hometown into a feeding frenzy. Instead, the first civilian I save is Evelyn Calder—the one person I never stopped missing, and the one person with every reason to hate me.

I can’t rewrite our past. But I can keep her alive. And if earning her forgiveness takes blood, truth, and a few catastrophically timed almost-kisses? Fine.

Because this time, I’m not leaving without Evie.

Halo is the first book in the new Halo Hearts series from Moira Darling. KPOP Demon Hunters but make it sapphic, and by an author I already enjoy, please say less!
This new universe, based on the popular Netflix original film, was much-needed to fill the space in my heart that was waiting for lady-loving demon hunters. Some similarities evoke nostalgia for the film, but enough original content sets it apart and creates an exciting queernormative world for our characters with a different trajectory.
Needless to say, I was invested before I started reading. Still, if I hadn't been, Moira Darling’s signature style made it easy to become engaged from the opening scene, where the girls on their tour bus exchange witty banter, showcase team dynamics, establish the central conflict, convey their individual personalities, and highlight the internal struggle associated with Kaia’s return to her hometown. I appreciated the quick visual setup.

"The tour bus smells like citrus cleaner, stale popcorn, and the collective bad decisions of four women who’ve been awake for too many time zones."

The girls are heading to Harbor's Edge for a yearly festival that is drawing a demon presence. Kaia's return to her hometown also brings her back to the girl she left behind—Evie, now a woman, whom she never stopped loving. I really enjoyed the characters. I particularly appreciated how Kaia's quiet, controlled strength masks her fear and regret, how Evie’s righteous anger protects her broken heart, and how the remaining members of Midnight Halo function as a cohesive, sibling-like unit, bickering but defending each other fiercely.
The introduction of the magic hierarchy and demon lore was easy to follow. The vivid action scenes were great, especially the way Darling described what was actually happening when they performed/battled.
I enjoyed the delicious angst between Kaia and Evie as they simultaneously wrestle with their past and vicious demons. I love the spicy payoff for the slow burn.
The big end battle was suspenseful and exciting. All of our mains get to shine. I am happy with the ending and epilogue and thrilled for the next installment.
Note: Be aware that there is the on-page death of a loved one (not a main character) and subsequent grief that might be a trigger.

Quoteworthy:
"'It’s never too late for pancakes,' I tell her, because that’s the one thing I believe in without complicated feelings."

"I turn back to the ward line, because it’s safer to touch magic than the past."

“'Evie,' Gus mutters as he passes me behind the counter, low enough no one else can hear. 'Smile. Pour coffee. Don’t stab anybody.'”

"We step inside and close the door softly behind us, like we’re trying not to wake the past."

“'Because it’s you. It’s always been you.'”

"'Your voice is my favorite sound.'"

“'I loved you when we were teenagers and anything felt possible,' she says. 'I loved you when I hated you for leaving. I loved you in every stupid little silence where I told myself I was over it.'”

I give this one 4.75 stars, rounded up.

4.5/5 incoming

As a mom to a seven year old you can bet that we are very familiar with KPop Demon Hunters in this house, naturally had to get in on this inspired sapphic story.

I’ll start by saying I loved Evie and could follow her around like a puppy, will happily accept my reprimands. The heavy mental and emotional burdens she carries so long without complaint. Even her anger never seemed to turn resentful. Strong is the best way to describe her imo.

Kaia, fierce protector who is working on remembering that it’s okay to let someone in on the hard decisions. I loved how hard she fought the return home just to spend the entire time back there fighting to keep literally any kind of distance requested by literally any one.

I’m looking forward to continuing the series and seeing how these two grow along the way.

Kpop demon hunter but makes it Sapphic!

A paranomal romance so unique that I have to admit it took me a while to figure out how magic worked in this world 😂.

Theaction-packed story is about second chances, hurt, heartbreak, angst but also found family, longing and gilr power.

I really liked the small town setting, the little haunted diner and the side charcahters were to die for, I can't wait to read more of them especially Mina.

The angst and regret were so real and Kaia had to WORK to get Evie back but I didn't feel the slow burn, just a lot of longing and yearing.

Overall it's 3.5⭐ and 3🔥

Now the tropes:
-Second Chance
-Celebrity Romance
-Forced Proximity
-Touch her and die
-Slow Burn
-Childhood BFF to Strangers to Lovers
-Small Town
-First Love
-Paranormal
-Longing & angst
-Korean MC
-Femme × Femme
-Sword lesbian
-Scissoring
-Return to hometown
-Found family

CW:Grief - loss - mention of dead parents - lies - character with Dementia - on page death

Moira, darling, you have done it again and again and again! What magic do you have? Il admit I do not care for k-pop or the K-pop demon hunter show, so I was admittedly hesitant to read this and was probably going to skip, however Moira has more then earned the trust to blindly read anything with her name on it. So when she messages me saying she wants me to arc read this novel? How could I possibly turn down such privilege.

And oh lord, it does not matter if you like K-pop and adjacent thing or not, this book is BEAUTIFUL! it’s a demon hunter adventure book with a focus on relationships and romance right there along side it, but keyword relationships, with her love interest and her band mates and even the town itself. It’s an amazing action packed book chasing down abstract demons and also slow, tender romantic moments that kind, tender and above all patient. What’s not to love?! Plus Moira famous and gorgeous lyrical and poetic prose. A solid 6 star.

For my angst reader, I seen some review about angst and maybe you picked up on the conflict but please trust me this miracle worker named Moira, works, well, miracles. The tension between them is delicious and keeps you on edge eager to see how the conflict is resolved and how/when will they learn to trust and love each other again. It works because one is hopeless still in love and desperate to make amends and the other is mad, so no silly arguments or stupid delays and circle arguments, just solid re building relationships dialogues with the every interaction bringing them closer and closer together.

Thank you so very much Moira Darling, for allowing me the privilege of reading it early.

I went into this not really knowing what to expect, but I’ve loved Moira Darling’s other series and was so excited for this new storyline and cast of characters. Fair warning…once you start, it’s very hard to put down when real life interrupts your reading time!

Halo is a fun, fast-paced sapphic paranormal romance that blends pop star glamour with demon-hunting danger, following two former best friends who are forced back into each other’s lives when supernatural chaos hits their hometown. I loved the emotional rollercoaster of Kaia and Evie’s journey from childhood best friends to first loves, to heartbreak and enemies, and ultimately finding their way back to each other. As fun and action-packed as the story is, it has a really strong emotional core that grounds everything. The side characters were such a highlight too, and really brought it all together. Jules was a personal fave with her chaotic, fun energy, and I’m really excited to see where their stories go next.

I’d recommend adding this one to your TBR if you love slow burn second-chance sapphic romance with a mix of action, magic, and drama.

Loved it! Strong female characters being celebrities while also fighting demons? Yes, please. It's pretty obvious what the inspiration is for this book and series is, and it nails it, along with also being a highly enjoyable (and emotional) second chance romance. Kaia and Evie both have their hurt and internal struggles, but beneath all of that is such a strong and adorable love, and seeing them work their way to the point of reconciliation (and more) was wonderful. It isn't an easy ride, of course, but Kaia's bandmates and Evie's grandmother are great support for them.

Even with the inspirations, the setting is something of its own, crafted well, and I am very curious to see how it all develops, especially with aspects that were hinted at during the story. Will we get an overarching plot between the books? I don't know, but I am eager to see what happens next (and how Kaia and Evie handle all of the changes to their lives).

If you are a fan of KPOP Demon Hunters and enjoy sapphic stories then this is the book for you!! (I mean it’s a wonderful book regardless ;)) While it gives you the action and demon hunting, there is also its very own unique characters and world.

Kaia is the leader. Evie is the childhood friend/love that was left behind. When they are forced back into each other’s orbit, the emotions are on full charge!

Reaching a happy ending wasn’t easy but it was worth every page. I enjoyed the individuality of each bandmate and I am invested in reading their stories!

Highly recommend!

4.5/5

Moira Darling is an author who has come a very long way in a short time, and I'm incredibly impressed.

The character work and dialogue are both excellent, the expressions of grief, loss, love, and rebuilding are some of the best I've read. It's also very fun.

It's very good.

4.5 stars rounded up! Always love to be an ARC reader for Darling.

It astounds me how much progress Moira Darling has made in her storytelling. The plot lines and character relationships grow stronger and better with each new book. While my favorite from Darling still hasn’t been topped, I loved Halo.

I’ve still not seen KPOP Demon Hunters, so this world was fresh to me. I liked the magic system!

Positive:
- Grief was portrayed and handled SO well. Same with regret. Saaaame with emotions in general. Kaia and Evie felt so realistic in how they handled themselves and each other. Their relationship was my absolute favorite to read about. It was mature and not pushy, had enough back-and-forth to be interesting while giving a happy ending.
- Characters with distinct personalities!!! The banter between Kaia and the other girls, Jules, Remy, and Mina, was so awesome. I like how they all played a role in the group. I’d have to say Blaire was one of my favorite side characters too, though. She totally embodied the “fight for you but be stern too” manager type.
- Figurative, poetic language and sensory details are always Darlings’ strong suit and that was as true for Halo as her other books.

Negative:
- Darling has a repetitive tendency. Similar phrases or ways of writing (like similes).
- The fight scenes were one of the repetitive parts that I honestly wanted to skip through? They were the same basically every time.
- Maybe this is weird but, the intimacy scenes felt like they could’ve been less descriptive. I’m not usually one that says so, but the vibe of the book was softer and those scenes were almost too mature for it.
- I wanted a little more explanation about Mina’s Seeing and the weird enhanced Chorus demon… it feels like something there was left unexplained. Which might be purposeful given the slight cliffhanger, but still. What was up with them not being able to contact Blaire and the handler guy? It feels like they should’ve discussed how odd it was for the Chorus to get that close…

Overall, I am so pleased. It was actually so good and intense at times I had to take breaks from reading. I was so anxious to know what came next, I actually avoided the story lol. That is a HUGE compliment from me.

I can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel!!

Halo was so good, I loved the entire premise of Midnight Halo being a pop group to the world and demon hunters undercover. Evie is a hometown girl, who never really planned on leaving, she works at a diner, and takes care of her grandma, her former best friend Kaia spread her wings and became a global pop sensation, and way things ended between them before Kaia left has left a mark. So naturally, when Kaia comes back to her hometown for a nostalgic festival and ends up having to rescue Evie on the first night back, tension brews. The journey between Evie and Kaia was rough, and it was clear both of them had feelings from the get go. They both needed to confront their fears before they could truly be good for each other. Along the way it was really fun to see the banter between the other Midnight Halo girls, and the friendship they had was really wholesome, they always looked out for each other. I'm so excited to see the next book in this series!

I need a book two! This is a great story about pop stars that fight demons. This is a second chance romance and let’s say that the MC has to put work into winning the girl again. It has some spice and a HEA. It is a slow burn 2nd chance sapphic romance.

Unexpected in a good way

This was a different type of story for me but it seemed interesting from the blurb. I must say I quite enjoyed it and it was hard to put down.

The story is fast paced and the characters are quite enjoyable. There’s quite a bit of angst but also some great witty banter. If you’re looking for an action packed romance, I recommend reading Halo.

I’ll definitely be picking up the second book in the series once it’s released.

Not going to lie, it took me a minute to get into the beginning of the story simply because there were a lot of characters to get to know right off the bat, but don't let that deter you from picking this up.

I loved Kpop demon hunters, so naturally I knew this book was right up my alley. I wasn't sure what to expect in this "world", being it was the first in a new series, but Moira Darling doesn't disappoint. This story was most definitely a slowwww burn sapphic, paranormal romance with some spice.

I liked Evie's character development throughout the story, her and her grandma were two of my favorite characters. ☕ 🥞

I'm really excited for the next book and continuing the adventure! ⚔️🌟

Sapphic demon hunters who live a double life as pop stars? Sing me up!

Darling builds a world that feels slightly off-center—not quite surreal, but never fully grounded either. It gives the story a haunting, almost dreamlike quality.

The writing itself is one of the book’s strongest assets. Darling has a clear sense of tone and isn’t afraid to slow things down to let a moment breathe.

The MC’s relationship is a second chance story, that underneath all the hurt is rooted in love. And reading how Kaia and Evie work through it all, with the support of their support systems is the highlight of this book. (Of course the demon slaying is also pretty cool)

I was hooked on this book pretty much from the first chapter. It really gave me K-pop demon hunter vibes, but with a sapphic romance, which just made me love it even more. That mix of action, supernatural elements, and emotional connection was exactly my kind of thing.

I honestly fell in love with the characters straight away. Jules, Mina & Remy stole my heart from the moment they were introduced. Even Blaire had her moments that were starting to grow on me, but the two FMCs, Kaia and Evie, also had me invested from the start. Kaia is just so sweet and easy to love, while Evie is strong, very sarcastic, and has that dry sense of humour that balances everything out perfectly. I was rooting for them the whole time. Even the side characters stood out a lot, especially Jules. I'm already excited for the next book because I need a Jules POV, and I'm so curious about where things go from where we left off.

The world-building was another highlight. It was rich without being overwhelming, and the descriptions were so vivid that I could clearly picture everything as it happened. The action scenes, in particular, were incredibly well done, fast-paced, detailed, and easy to follow, which made them all the more exciting.

I’ll admit, I was a little intimidated going in because the book is just over 400 pages. I fully expected it to drag at some point, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It turned out to be such a fast and easy read, and I flew through it way quicker than I anticipated. It never felt slow; every chapter kept me engaged.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It delivered on characters, romance, action, and world-building, all while keeping me emotionally invested the entire time. I genuinely can’t wait for the next one to come out.

fun twist that isn’t a ripoff

The book is entertaining, heartfelt, and emotionally devastating at times. These two stubbornly love each other even when it’s broken and seems unsalvageable. It’s a bonkers concept, but it works, and I look forward to the next one. Each release gets stronger narratively and the characters more relatable.

For the first time since I got back, the word home made sense again. You’ve always been my home.

The thing that keeps trying to hurt Evie dies here. Not "save the town." Not "protect Eon's image." Not "contain the incident."

🖤 MY READING EXPERIENCE
Another absolute hit from Moira! She really said let me build a whole new world/series and let me absolutely wreck you emotionally while I’m at it. 😭 This book is SUCH a ride. Demons? Check. Demon-fighting girl band? ICONIC. A love story full of regret and unfinished feelings? 100%. I loved every second of it. And the whole band...I am OBSESSED.

🫀CHARACTER THOUGHTS
Kaia is carrying SO much, and you can feel it in every decision she makes. But the second she comes back and sees Evie again...oh it’s over. Flip switched. Mission is now...protect Evie at all costs (and maybe, just maybe, fix what she broke).
And Evie. Girl is BITTER, bitter and maybe it's valid. The tension between them...the angst. The slow rebuild of trust and love. I was eating it UP. This is exactly my kind of emotional damage.

🔥 MOMENTS I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT
This is a slow burn. The build is totally worth it for these girls. But the ending is absolutely explosive. And that will stay with me.

⚠️ ONE SMALL NOTE
This is a slow burn done RIGHT. The tension builds and builds until you’re practically screaming and then the ending just EXPLODES. I’m still not over it.

WHAT I LIKED:
I loved the relationship between the four members.

I loved how Evie had legitimate reasons for keeping Kaia at a distance even though Kaia was trying so hard to fix things between them. Normally, characters who take forever to forgive another for a past wrongdoing might put me off, especially if the other character is trying so hard to be forgiven, but I honestly enjoyed how Evie was fighting so hard to not give in, because she was hurting so much, and sometimes pain is easier to hold on to.

I loved how hard Kaia was trying to just be present for Evie, even when Evie was hurting her.

I loved the moment they were finally on the same page and decided to work things out. I loved that because the hurt was so deep, it didn’t take one thing to make Evie forgive Kaia. They had to work at it from both sides for a good few chapters and I loved that. If Evie had simply forgiven Kaia overnight, it would have made the hurt Evie was feeling seem lesser than it truly was for me, so I’m incredibly happy they had to work at it instead of just have the hurt disappear to never be seen again.

I adored how much Evie was annoyed at herself for still having feelings for Kaia.

Kaia is so sweet when reading from Evie’s perspective.

I loved that they didn’t use sex to get over the hurt.

I loved how supportive Kaia’s friends were, and how even though it might seem annoying to someone on the outside, they all know that’s how they show each other support, love, and care.

I absolutely loved how each member of Midnight Halo had something different to contribute to the team. They all had their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. I honestly can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
There was absolutely nothing I disliked about the story. It was amazing from the first page to the last.

Halo by Moira Darling is a sapphic version of KPop Demon Hunters with second chance, slow burn, and angsty yearning vibes. Moria Darling has again expertly written a book with very vivid scenes that take you into the story. I could literally feel the angst between Evie and Kaia and just wanted them to be back together so bad. I will admit that I still have not seen KPop Demon Hunters yet, but it’s on my list to see and this book has made we want to watch even more. I enjoyed reading the interactions between the pop stars as they acted like siblings by picking on one another, but also supporting each other 100%. The way Moira described the performance scenes for the pop group while they were preforming and fighting the “demon” was amazing as well. I could picture it in my head as I read. The overall story was enjoying to read and I was so happy for Evie and Kaia at the end I almost cheered out loud. The way Moira has written this book I can easily see more books to come for this new world she has made as I would be interested in a story on the other three pop stars in the group as well.

I had so much fun with this book.

The world, the story, the action… all of it just pulled me in. And the girl power energy? Obsessed. It delivered in the best way.

I am always here for a second chance romance, and this one slaps. Khaia is that stoic, serious leader who keeps everything together, gets things done and absolutely kicks ass. Meanwhile she’s quietly terrified of love and everything that comes with it, which just made her even more interesting to me.

Evie though… I loved her immediately. She’s strong, kind, grounded and not willing to take nonsense from anyone. Seeing love through her perspective added so much heart. I genuinely just wanted to reach into the book and hug her.

The writing made everything feel vivid without dragging. I was completely pulled in and always wanted to know what happens next, which made it really hard to put down.

The side characters were also great, and now I’m fully invested in getting more of Midnight Halo. I need their stories.

I will never get tired of badass women kicking butt.

I've never seen K pop demon hunter but I have to imagine it's similar in premise. A young band fighting demons during concerts while also touring the country. This author had quickly become one of my new favorites. I loved her vampire series. So when I saw this new entry I dove right in.

Kaia is the leader of the group. The band is heading back to her home town for the annual light festival. Something is afoot, the demonic activity is spiking. Evie is not happy to see her former first love back in town. The angst between the fmcs is palpable. The push and pull and slow burn is a calling card of this author. The former friends are thrust in close proximity. If you're a fan of slow burns, you will enjoy this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. I'm hoping this branches out into a full blown series.

Tropes and triggers: hidden magic, enemies to lovers, demons, forced proximity, second chance, childhood friends, coming home, touch her and d, first love, ailing relative.

Second Chance meets KPop Demon Hunters. It's full of yearning, regret and trying to find a way forward in Kaias future, where she has any say in it.

The demons are less corporeal and more like semi-invisible clouds which only the initiated can see. While the book has some magical world building and interesting side characters, all character and plot-development focus on Kaia and Evie. There is enough space for sequels, which could expand on the organization, the demon attacks and how it affects the world.

The romance is all there already. It just has to overcome years of heartbreak and fear. I enjoyed that very much and was happy it didn't follow a superficial tv-romance-plotline.

I loved Moira Darling's vampire series, but she builds a breathtaking and complex world in this new series. The second chance romance is second chance done right, but the characters really made the book stand out. All the side characters are outstanding. Tasha, Evie's grandma, and Midnight Halo were some of the most enjoyable. The girl group is vibrant, unique, and completely magnetic (especially Jules). These are not just side characters. They elevate every scene they're in. Addictive, immersive, and deeply romantic, Halo pulls you in and keeps you there until the very end.

Another great book from Moira darling, I’m used to the vampires so this was a bit of a change however it was good!

It’s kind of a friends-enemies-lovers situation which I always love, it just felt so raw and real and it really went into how Evie was torn between forgiveness and anger.

I really enjoyed it, I can’t say much without spoiling it but I recommend this book especially if you like the Kpop demon hunters

It's basically KPDH the book, which isn't bad, just a fact.
the book focuses mostly on the second chance romance of the two MCs the demon fighting is a nice side-action.
The demons are described as barely corporal shadows that can only really be seen by humans touched by magic.

It's a very fun read, with lots of emotions
But sadly the author fails a tiny bit to create "drama" and ups and downs in the arc of tension
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

It's a good read. The pace is good and you get the story quickly. Young Love but a bad break.
The worldbuilding is surprising and intertwine standard village and monters and magic not visible. Lots of lightseffects you can imagine when discribed. The characters are well written. Some side characters are really quirky:)
