Monstrous Whims #3

The Whims of Love

Rate this book
THE WHIMS OF LOVE is the third book in the Monstrous Whims series. It’s a Science Fantasy MMM Monster Romance set in a dystopian world with giant monsters.

Stellan and Perri are known to be a package. Lovers come and go, but they stay inseparable. They are soulmates—two parts of the same being, separated in the flesh. They have never been away from each other for longer than a few days, so when Perri goes missing during an adventure in the wastelands, Stellan is ready to scour the world to get him back. Even if it means asking for the help of the King of Merchants himself.

Alastair reigns over the Kingdom of Trade and the Traveling Market with an iron fist. He’s one of the most powerful mutants who were created during the Revival Project, and all respect and fear him. Except Perri, who was attracted to his monstrous side as much as his human one and wanted him so fiercely. So when Stellan asks for his help to find Perri, Alastair doesn’t hesitate to follow him to the deep end.

Stellan and Perri have always fascinated Alastair, and he can’t help but want a taste of what they have.

THE WHIMS OF LOVE is the third book in the Monstrous Whims series. The series needs to be read in order. It’s a gay romance (18+) between three characters with a HEA for all of them.

In the bones of the wasteland two hearts meet. The shining sun, Perri, and the humble moon, Stellan. Two boys forever devoted to one another, mind, body, and soul. Their relationship never wavers, never trembles. They share partners and allow each other to have separate hookups since they know nothing will ever draw a wedge between them. For years they thought their relationship to be whole until suddenly they discover a missing piece that seems to fit perfectly.

A piece in the shape of one handsome King. Alastair, with the blood of the vicious, remote Kraken running through his veins. He is the King of the Traveling Market and having watched over Perri and Stellan for some time he finds himself drawn to their dynamic. When he and Stellan team up to save Perri, Alastair starts to believe he may have a spot in their hearts.

Ever since I was introduced to Perri and Stellan I fell for their relationship hard. And I really hoped the author would focus on their unique, spirited love.
I'm glad to say I was not disappointed.

The care that was placed behind these two characters is absolutely breathtaking. The emphasis on their pure devotion, pure willingness to trust each other in such a selfish environment. It was so sweet to witness, my heart warmed during every interaction.

Not only that, but this is a great example of a lovely MMM. Since Perri and Stellan are so tightly knit, I was concerned on how Alastair would be integrated into their little bubble. But I had nothing to fear. The first half of this book puts a lot of focus on Alastair and Stellan since they are both very close off characters and that was definitely the right move. It drew a nice line between all three of them and made me believe that Perri and Stellan's unyielding love was truly meant to be shared with Alastair as well.

The world-building is only growing into something more magnificent. I adore every little message before each chapter. It’s like discovering hidden notes in a video game. A very creative way to add onto the world while not piling too many words on top of each other.

Overall, these books are improving immensely, I had a lot of fun on this wild journey. Plus I got to revisit some
old characters, I missed Jude!!

Don’t mistake my rating for me not loving the shit out of this book and its characters as well, haha. Because I did. It had the same great ingredients as previous books—a fast paced, engaging storyline, sending Stellan, Perri and Alistair, The King of Merchants too on a wild adventure through the wastelands Still, it did not quite hit as good for me as much as the first two books.

I think I was a bit that we didn’t get to explore the Traveling Market which I was pretty excited about. BUT at least because these three got out on a big rescue mission instead we get to meet all the previous characters again and I freaking LOVED that. Getting more time with Beet, Griff and Helios as well as some time with by beloved Oliver and Jude. And while they all formed a bond, even the “brothers” of mutants (kind of) Oliver will probably always watch from the side as Griffin can’t forgive him for what he did to Helios. Fair, I guess but I’m still sad about it, okay? my baby. 🥺

I’m very much looking forward to what Mell comes up with next.

side note: The “monsters” in these books are humans (created in labs) with monstrous mutations from experiments. The animals on the covers do not represent the mutations but stand for something important to their story.

Another “I’m reading a movie” type of book from Mell ♥️

I love this serie, I love this author and I definitely love this book. Honestly Mell has a way of bringing you into the story like no one else.

I am a sucker for poly romance and this one was perfect.
Perri and Stellan come as a pair, all cute together and here comes Alastair. I loved every seconds.
I was super intrigued on how their relationship will blossom and I was not disappointed. Their journey together to save Perri and then to save Vex was so wholesome. 5/5 ⭐️
Alastair was delightful. His relationship with Stellan was super cute and I was swooning over them the whole time. Perri, the little minx, was the glue to bring them together and the three of them are just adorable 🥰

The main story was light and, as usual, captivating. A good balance between a solid story, the romance and the smut. 🥰 nothing was too much. The author just knows how to keep us entertained.
The fact that all characters from book 1 and 2 are present was heartwarming and having Beet the sassy queen again, the cherry on top ✨ I love her haha.

As always, we can see that Mell did her homework properly, each chapter starts with information on this post apocalyptic world and brings so much more to the story. Ever since book 1, I am a fan of those articles, journals, audio transcripts and others start of chapters. The author worked hard on her lore, and she did amazing.

Blown away once again!!!🩷

I have been anticipating this book so badly and with anticipation, sometimes you can be let down. But not here. Not from this incredible author. This book was e v e r y t h i n g!!!!!
I was a bit nervous going into it, as I typically don’t read poly romances. But this just worked! They really couldn’t be any other way.
This author shows that the plot does not have to come second to the romance. She is able to put forward an incredible world and thrilling story line, while simultaneously creating a beautiful, real, and heart wrenching romance between three endearing characters.
I love the discourse around what it means to be “human”. Being human isn’t about flesh and biology, but about your character.
We get glimpses of the all the other characters too including beetle and the two moms!! I just love them so much.
The spice was spicing as usual too. Those tentacles work wonderfully for pleasing two at once ;)

Thank you so much for the ARC. All opinions and ratings above have been my own and left voluntarily.

How excited I was to finally get book 3 of this fantastic series!
This book is MMM poly! Stellan and Perri are in a loving but open relationship. They’re also both part of the Traveling Market, a group of survivors headed by their own king, Alistair. Stellan is happy to support most of Perri’s whims, including hooking up with Alistair. However, when Perri catches wind of a lost AI in a far off land, he knows Stellan won’t be so willing to let him follow his heart and rescue her. So what does he do? Of course Perri sneaks out with the truck at night to go on his own little solo quest in a post-apocalyptic hellscape! Stellan and Alistair will do anything to save him, and in the meantime, bond with each other as well.

This book has:
-a post apocalyptic world with monsters and mutant MCs
-an MM open relationship turned MMM
-special mutated anatomy for Alistair 🐙
-return of our lovely characters from previous books
-inventive 🌶️
-adventure and cool world building

As always, Bright delivers a very cool sci-fi/fantasy world with interesting lore and creatures. This story is very fast-paced and to the point in terms of writing style. While some books feel like I’m experiencing the story WITH the characters, this writing style feels more like the characters are retelling me a story of what happened to the. Very direct writing, which means there’s never a dull moment in terms of plot progression. The plot itself is quite simple and easy to follow.

The MCs in this story are definitely unique, and their dynamic is very much based on them all just caring for each other as people. Nothing possessive, more like they just deeply feel a connection between them.

You definitely should read books 1&2 first, but once you do, then I also think this book is worth it for sure!

ARC review

it's a fast-paced romance, plot-driven story with plenty of poly reminisce & present mm/mmm sex on page, all while maintaining a good execution of 1st person narration from three (!) POV

bonus: reunion with old/new friends/family

my fav in series is - unexpectedly - book 2 (unexpectedly, because I almost didn't read it, but then I laughed my ass off, and when the characters appear in book 3 they bring their vibes along), but book 3 wins the sex on page medal, while book 1 was extremely intriguing with the world building & the introduction of to-be-explored stakeholders

I liked the view on religion in this sci fi scenario (book 3)

I think this world past* & present has a lot of room for more stories

*past: i like the chapter previews: the private & scientific notes from people from the past (some are family, some are strangers) they have their own stories to tell

future: thinking of the future - ofc, they'll grow old together duh, but I'm thinking, if all cool survivors end up in queer relationships, will they start to adopt (probably queer) kids or will Beet & Vex find new cool kids to take care of ?

One reason it's 5 stars is how their world wires my brain to think of it & its stories after finishing the book(s) 🤍

Wooooo! This was so good! This third installment follows Stellan and Perri with their mutant Alastair. Perri goes out on his own to save a new friend, which makes Stellan and Alastair follow. Good thing too because Perri runs into some trouble. We get to see all of the characters from the first two books. It was nice to see how everyone is doing as they've fully settled into their relationships and Beet is always a delight.

Stellan has always been aloof with people other than Perri so it was interesting to see him slowly open up as he spends more time with Alastair. The King wants them both and he already has Perri but he has to put in some work to get Stellan too but it's so worth it. The three of them are each other's missing pieces that they didn't know they needed. Alastair completes Stellan and Perri in a way they never got with any of their previous lovers and the two of them give the king a safe place to be himself and let go of all his monstrous instincts.

Overall this was super good and had excellent world building, as usual.

This was amazing! It might be my favorite installment of this series (so far?). I loved getting to see more of the traveling merchants, and I was so fascinated by Perri and Stellan when we met them earlier in the series. Their story was lovely, bloody and plenty spicy. The addition of the king of merchants was unexpected, but turned out to be exactly what they all needed. I also really enjoyed all the cameos of the lovely couples from books 1 and 2!

6 ESTRELLAS

¿Y Perri? ¿Cómo no amar a Perri?

✨ ARC Review ✨
I am OBSESSED with this world that Mell has come up with! From the first book, to this newest installment - I am absolutely in love 😘.

The wait for Stellan, Alastair & Perri's story was so so worth it 😍. This is a phenomenal read and I couldn't put it down once I picked it up! Their love is inspiring and so wholesome in a lot of ways, but absolutely dirty and depraved in the best of ways too 😈. I mean who doesn't love some surprise monster parts? 🥵

All three of these characters had me in a chokehold but together? Together they were so perfect and each other's missing pieces 💜. Plus it was so fun to see characters from the other books, particularly the sassy and lovable Beetle 💕. The action and adventure in this book was also so well done (as always) and just added to the overall story of these characters love.

I'm so glad Alastair found his home in Stellan & Perri and that Stellan realized his heart was in fact big enough for another 🥹.

Perri is also such a delight! He's got a heart of gold in a world that is meant to eat him alive, and yet he never wavers from his truth and thankfully has two people willing to go to the ends of the earth for him 😭.

Seriously, if you haven't read this series definitely give it a shot! The world building, plot and setting is spectacular, but then you add in the hard fought HEA's between characters? And it is easily one of my favourite reads so far this year! 💯

This science fantasy M/M/M monster romance is the perfect blend of slow-burn romance and fast-paced action. Set in a dystopian world where ancient gods have re-emerged, the worldbuilding is gripping from start to finish.

At the heart of the story are Stellan and Perri. Lovers may come and go, but they remain unshakably bound to each other—the ultimate soulmate package. Their dynamic is tender yet fierce, grounded in deep trust and shared history. They are inseparable, devoted, and protective of each other.

Enter Alastair, the most powerful mutants alive, is a force of nature. Controlled, commanding, and unapologetically dominant, the ruler of the Kingdom of Trade and the Traveling Market, who’s long been fascinated by their bond and can’t resist wanting a taste of what they share.

When Perri decides to go onto rescue mission and leaves Stallen behind the latest doesn't think twice about asking Alastair for help. To his surprise the King is going with him.
The tension between them is impossible to ignore. With little push and Perri's help Stellan finally gives in, the moment is explosive and completely worth the wait.

The grumpy vs. sunshine dynamic, “touch him and die” energy, and opposites-attract tension make the romance absolutely addictive.
Add a rescue mission for an AI robot and cameos from beloved characters from the previous books, and you get a thrilling, and utterly satisfying read.

5 stars!!!! This was SO GOOD!! The chemistry when these three get together is off the charts! This is honestly the best poly book I’ve ever read - I felt the love equally between all partners and as a group and the sex was hotttt! The plot of this book was great - such a fun adventure with all the MCs from the previous books returning! I loved this book so much, I couldn’t put it down!

What a fantastic read! So far this was my favorite of the series and the spice was SPICING! I devoured this book and will definitely read it again. There was so much chemistry between the mmcs, especially Stellan and Alastair. Also who doesn’t love monster smut with tentacles? What a fun surprise that was, I was grinning like a fool reading that.
I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed the poly grouping normally I’m not as huge fan of it, but it really worked well and honestly, it was my favorite poly couple that I have read about so far. Also vex as the side character was just a very pleasant addition to the group. And of course we get a HEA to end the story. 5 stars for me and I hope you all love it as much as I do.

’I realize I would have crossed the entire North American continent to save this man, without regret. And I’ll follow them farther still.’

Hooooooo boy, I enjoyed this post-apocalyptic monster/mutant poly MMM romance so much!

The Whims of Love was such a fun book to read! I was eager to get my hands on it after reading the first two in the Monstrous Whims series and briefly meeting Perri, Stellan, and Alastair, and it was so nice to get to know them as individual characters and not just footnotes in someone else’s story.

I loved the dynamic between Perri and Stellan. Their implicit trust in each other, open communication (aside from when Perri legs it in the middle of the night to go on a half-cooked rescue mission), and gentle all-consuming love was so beautiful. I want what they have so badly. I loved that they have seperate wants and needs that are also somehow shared and reciprocated by each other. They flow so seamlessly and it’s obvious in every interaction how much they love and care for each other.

Introducing Alastair, the king of the travelling market they live in, to their relationship made for such a delicious slow burn. Perri is the first to make a move with Alastair, being bold and going after what he wanted once he realised how their king looked at him and at Stellan. Normally so tough and unapproachable, Alastair is immediately smitten with Perri - I mean, you’d be an idiot not to be, he’s so damn sweet - but can’t keep his eyes off of Stellan.
When Perri goes missing on his insane AI rescue mission, it’s the perfect opportunity for Alastair to take a leaf out of Perri’s book and be brave about what he wants. Which is Stellan.
Following Alastair and Stellan as they traverse the wastelands in search of their missing lover and soul-mate was so much fun. We get to enjoy Alastair’s desperate pursuit of Stellan to the backdrop of endless deserts, hidden safe houses in deep forests, a long drive along the coast, and violent encounters with the Old Gods. It’s exhilarating.

’Then he does something I wouldn’t have expected from him in a thousand years: he hands me over to Alastair like a precious package, and says, “There’s someone else who’s happy to have found you.”
Stellan always tolerated my lovers, at best, or straight up ignored them, and he certainly never enjoyed handing me over to one of them. He was never jealous. He just dislikes most people.
“Oh,” I say as I let go of him and land in the King’s big arms.
Alastair’s beautiful smile is the first thing I see, teeth pearly white, as he looks down at me. “Hi, Perri.”’

Ugh, they’re just so perfect together. Each of them being something unique and wonderful to the relationship and I was genuinely suprised by how long it had taken them to realise they complemented each other so well. They’re seamless as a poly throuple.

As always the world building is top tier. Bright does the sci-fi/post-apocalyptic/fantasy mix so well that I could genuinely believe that there were gigantic ocean and land dwelling creatures all over what was left of the American continent, and it was so fun to get to imagine the coast and the forests, as the characters saw them when they travelled.
I was also so excited to see Griffin, Helios, Beet, Jude, and Oliver again. I’d really missed them and it was nice to see them a finally getting to enjoy being one big dysfunctional found family.

I really enjoyed this book and this whole series. I hope we get some spin-off’s or a continuation in the future!

Where the latest installment of Mell Bright’s dystopian monster series started off strong, it veered straights for a place that I think I’m very likely in the minority about not enjoying and stayed there for quite some time and became…cute. Almost twee. In the middle of apocalyptic desertification and murderous cults, we have a throuple falling in love and very few feelings at all about some cool tough soldier types that die early on because Perri didn’t coordinate his rescue mission with anyone. Which neither Stellan nor Alastair care about because we love Perri and we’re glad he’s safe, even if he insists on risking everyone’s life for an AI robot.

Many other people will like this one more than I did, because one of my least favorite things in romance is when the current MCs in a series spend time with former MCs who are now happy couples and we get to see how cute and in love the former MCs are with each other. I get the vibe reading peoples reviews that it’s appreciated and enjoyed when authors do this. Maybe I’m a cynic or a grump, but makes me cringe on some level. It’s not that I don’t believe in HEA’s, but I think there’s a reason they ride off into the sunset while the getting’s hot—because we all come down to earth at some point, no matter how much we love our partners.

And where I wanted this book to give more vicious Lily Mayne-style dystopia, it served instead flirty sidelong glances, banter, warm welcomes, quality time and help from understanding exes, parents and new/old friends, with a side of killer cults and monster. And tentacle genitalia-adjacent appendages.

Fluffy dystopia? Is that a thing? I like Mell’s writing and will read more in the future, but this was just a three star read for me, unfortunately. Not terrible, but unlike Mayne’s monster series, I won’t be revisiting it.

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!
Mell R. Bright was kind enough to provide me an ARC of this novel! I fell in love with Whims of the Gods and my fav character Griffin, and have now read all three books in the series! Out of all of the books so far, it is my opinion that this one is the most relationship-driven instead of plot-driven. Yes, there is a plot and a big rescue mission, but this book really focuses on the relationship between Stellan and Alistar, and then figuring out the dynamic of having the three of them together. Know this going into it! I really liked that the relationship between Stellan and Alistair got that focus first, and was able to build a bit of a foundation of respect before Perri was brought back into the picture. Once Perri was back, he tried his hardest to get those two together because he knew Alistair would fit in well with their unique open relationship. Alistair ended up being my favorite character in this novel. Sure, Perri was a cute little ball of sunshine who always thinks the best of everyone, and Stellan was a grump with a heart of gold, but Alistair was so kind and patient!

I really liked that the whole gang was in this novel. We got to see Helios, Griffin, and Beet again, and also Jude and Oliver! My only gripe with this novel is that we are introduced to another mutant, but we never get to know which god he has the DNA of. The author has also continued the trend of adding little bits and pieces explaining the apocalypse before every chapter, and that is something I have absolutely LOVED about the other two novels.

My favorite of the series, and that's saying something because this whole series has been SUCH a delight!!

I loved the dynamics these three brought to the series. I loved how Bright showed each of the relationships in such a way that you truly couldn't think one was left out or unequal, even though 2 have been far more established. There was just so much pining and yearning going on behind the scenes and I loved how it was shown and developed. Alistair and Stellan getting time on their own, where they were working together for their shared love Peri, was just so smart because it gave them the time and space to truly see each other and fall for each other. Well, for Stellan to see and fall, Alistair was already so into Stellan it was a little painful. But it all worked out and when the three come together it is FIREWORKS.

And the world is still coming together so great (though sadly this might be the end???). I love the broadcasts/research notes/etc that start the chapter and set the scenes. It's such a fun way to build out the world and I loved learning along the way. There's a lot of action and tension and there were definitely times I cried. Overall, this series has just been a lot of fun!!

I’m super picky about MMM, thus every one I read starts with a deficit 🤷🏻‍♀️😆 … so I love when an author can win me over. And Mell R Bright certainly did.

Perri & Stellan are an established couple, soulmates with an open relationship. Then comes Alistair, our hunky mutant with the secret 😉 tentacles that Perri already has the hots for … but Stellan can’t understand his own reactions to him … that he already feels like the piece they didn’t know they’re missing. We get a good dose of forced proximity when Alistair & Stellan take to the road to find Perri, some bonding and aha moments that make the tension simmer just right. So when they reunite with Perri 💥 🥵 … he’s the spark that sets it all on fire. This was a great love story between the three, but it was Stellan who binds them all together as he learns to lower his defenses and weaves Alistair into the unbreakable bond he shares with Perri.

I had so much fun with this series. It’s fast paced, engaging and balances story/plot with romance so wonderfully. I love how the background of the old gods rising is interwoven throughout; and how the characters from previous stories still play a vital role in subsequent books. I’m sad that it’s over, but I can’t be sad too long bc I know I’ll visit them again. 🩶

I have been absolutely loving this series, but this book just stole my heart in ways I can’t even explain, it was just the perfect book for me at this moment in my life. I was just so invested in this story from the first page to the second page, it had my undivided attention.

Stellan and Perri have been together for years. Alastair has been pining after them and wants to have the kind of romantic connection that they have. he finds it ... in their arms. And I just loved everything about this. I adored their trio of Perri the bright sunshine guy that would charm a corpse if he tried, Stellan the calm and collected colder guy and Alastair that is all mighty powerful and protective of both of them. I was just so in aw of these characters and their connection. I just thought all of their interactions were such a delight to read about and the three of them just made such a good trio that balanced each other out perfectly.

Also the world, vibes and atmosphere in this series just continues to steal my breath away, it’s just so marvelous and a damn good time to read about.

Most female authors fail at the MMM and this book certainly screamed that.
We have no context of the relationship between Perri and Stellan. Which for the amount of time between releases with no summary is pathetic.

We are introduced to Stellan who is pouring his heart out to tell us Perri is his soul mate and he will die without him. We are then told that Perri fucks around on him. Disappears for days fucking other men. Are they together? Are they aware of each other's feelings? Stellan goes to the man fucking his boyfriend (?) for help...we still have no background or context to this...
Next chapter, we are introduced to Alistair who admits he knows they're lovers and fine with fucking one of them?

This book is digusting. It screams "I used to watch Queer as and this is how the relationship goes" A fail again, at an mmm story. Women just don't understand the dynamics nor can explain it correctly.

I will read literally anything Mell writes, and I’ve been anxiously awaiting Perri & Stellan’s story since we met them in The Whims of Hate.

They have an interesting established relationship. Stellan considers them soulmates,’two haves of the same soul, and they have an open relationship. So bear this in mind while reading if this is not your style. This is how Alistair comes into their circle: he can’t resist Perri.

Alistair is an interesting character and mutant, and he really has no idea what’s going on with the two lovebirds and himself until a few weeks into their adventure and his ‘monster’ starts coming out. That’s when things really come into perspective for him.

We get to see both of the previous couples in this book which is great. And Beet is always a hoot.

I was really hesitant going into this one because I loved The Whims of Hate so much, but I think I loved this one even more! Bright continues to write really interesting relationship dynamics that I can’t get enough of!

The plot and stakes leave something to be desired, but that’s not really the point of this book, so it didn’t detract from my experience. The thing that really mattered was the dynamic between Stellan, Perri, and Alastair which I think, again, was really well done.

I really want to spend more time in this world, too. The old gods and the mutants and the way the world functions is so interesting.

Anyway, this was a delight and I’ll definitely be reading more from Mell R. Bright in the future!

OMG this book was so good. I love Mell's writing. There is something about it that makes is so her books are so hard to put down..

I will say don't read this in public if you don't have a solid poker face because the spice is spicy!

“Do you wish it was you?” I ask Stellan. His feverish eyes lock on mine over Perri’s shoulder. “Yes…” “Do you wish you were the one fucking him right now, or do wish you were the one being fucked by me?”

This felt like such a great ending for the trilogy. I'm sad to see this series close but I couldnt imagine a better way for it to.

I'm following author on Patreon after I found the first book of this series and was lucky to get this book quicker, and of course, it's another masterpiece 🙌

Normally, I wouldn't read a book where MC's are throuples (nothing against just don't usually get my romance vibe kicking), but since I love this series and the author's books I had to try, and I was not disappointed. It really works and I just love how the story flows and the relationship between all characters 💚

Book 3 | Monster Romance | Perri x Stellan x Alistair
HEA | 1st POV | KU
Overall Thoughts:
✨ I’m always skeptical going into MMM / Poly books because it’s not always my favourite and it has to be done well. Mell did really well and I ended up loving their dynamic
✨ Although I maybe would’ve like to see Alistair and Stellans relationship development
✨ As with the previous books I enjoyed the world building and cameos of previous couples
