*minor references that I’m flagging as potential spoilers*
The Dragon’s Shadow marks Susan Lute’s entry into romantasy, and while it didn’t fully hit its stride for me, it shows real promise for what’s to come in the series.
The first half of the book felt dense and, at times, confusing. There’s a lot of world-building introduced quickly, and I found myself working to stay grounded in the story. I would have loved clearer dual POV structure, especially with chapter labels for the main characters, to help track the perspective shifts more easily.
That said, the final 30% really delivered. The pacing picked up, the emotional threads tightened, and I found myself far more invested in both the characters and the direction of the story. It’s one of those endings that makes you glad you stuck with it. There were only 2 pieces that were super predictable and could have been left out IMO, but I get why Lute chose to use those pieces for storytelling.
While this wasn’t marketed as a slow burn, it definitely reads like one. Readers who enjoy a gradual romantic build may appreciate that, but if you’re expecting early sparks, it takes some time to get there. I also have to admit I wanted more dragons on the page. For a dragon shifter story, their presence felt lighter than expected.
The concept of following five 34-year-old quintuplets is unique, though I’m still deciding how I feel about it. As someone close in age, it created an interesting reading experience, but it also took me out of the story at times…and I’m curious to see how each sibling’s story will be differentiated across the series. I’m most looking forward to Roman but it sounds like Lute’s decided on a different sibling for book 2! Won’t give it away, but readers will catch on quickly! I also would have preferred the epilogue to set me up for an “OMG” leading into book 2, but we did get a very shiny and buttoned up HEA with some loose threads for the overall plot.
Overall, this is a solid start to Lute’s romantasy debut. I’m intrigued enough to continue, especially with the potential the ending sets up. Moving forward, I’d love to see higher stakes, stronger romantic tension (bring on the chili peppers!!!), more dragon lore and presence, and a tighter, faster-paced narrative.

In 2089, in a post-Dystopian world, when the path of Logan Pen, dragon-human hafling, crosses with that of Beyla Higgins, shadow walker/thief, excitement follows. Logan is a quintuplet. He and his four siblings join forces as mercenaries, trying to maintain order in a world just beginning to recover from the day everything was destroyed.
Beyla’s parents were murdered three years ago, right in front of her eyes. Since then, she’s been living in the shadow world. When she steals Logan’s protective talisman, created when he was born, which he always carries, he vows to recover it. Neither realizes that there is much more at stake for them and for the world.
There’s a powerful evil gathering and they must join forces to discover, possess, and protect the Firestone. Until this time, it was thought to be mythical, but evidence arrives that shows that it’s real. It has the potential to be the most powerful weapon even known, one that can take control of every creature in the world. Amidst their quest, Logan must also participate in a tournament to determine the next Wyvern, the king of all of dragonborn. To make matters even worse, Logan’s brother Carlton’s dragon was taken from him by evil forces. Carlton’s life may be in danger unless it’s found, and quickly.
This was an entertaining enemies-to-lovers, fated-mates romantasy with a touch of steampunk thrown in for good measure. It focuses on the two main characters and their pursuit which finds them aided and hampered by members of each of their families. This is very much a book about families, good and bad. This is a book for mature readers, and there’s much going on within its pages that will keep you up reading late at night. This is the first book in the Dragonborn Chronicles series. My guess is that there will be four additional books to follow, one for each of the remaining Pen siblings.

This is the first book that I have read by this author It is well written and action packed . It is a love story and about family dynamics. The chemistry between the main characters is very interesting and sizzling. The books starts in 2089, a post-Dystopian world, when the path of Logan Pen, dragon-human mix crosses paths with Beyla Higgins, shadow walker/thief, Logan is a quintuplet. He and his four siblings join forces as mercenaries, trying to maintain order in a world just beginning to recover from the day everything was destroyed. Beyla’s parents are murdered in front of her This causes her retreat in to the shadow world. She steals Logan’s protective talisman, created when he was born, that he always carries, and he is determined to recover it. There is a powerful evil gathering and they must join forces They discover, Firestone. Is at risk , it was thought to be mythical, but evidence arrives that shows that it’s real. It has the potential to be the most powerful weapon ever known because it can take control of every creature in the world. During their quest, Logan must participate in a tournament to determine the next Wyvern, the king of all of dragonborn. To make matters even worse, Logan’s brother ,Carlton dragon was taken from him by evil forces. Carlton’s life may be in danger unless he is found quickly. This is such an action packed book that keeps you on the seat of your pants up to the end. It is definitely 5 stars worthy ❣️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

What stood out most for me was the emotional intensity between Logan and Beyla. Their chemistry crackles from the very beginning, but beneath the attraction is something deeper: two stubborn souls circling trust like wary predators. Their relationship feels earned, not rushed, and the push-pull tension gives the story real heart.
The worldbuilding is rich without becoming overwhelming. Avalon, the dragon hierarchy, the tournament politics, and the lingering danger surrounding the Firestone all create the sense of a living world with history smoldering beneath every scene. Even secondary characters, especially Daniel and the Pen family, carry emotional weight and complexity.

Wow! There is never a dull moment in this story! It is set in a post apocalyptic world filled with dragons, Umbra (shadow walkers) and anarchists. All three are trying to find the firestone, which when mated with its capstone, would provide enough power to illuminate or destroy the world. Logan Pen is the eldest of quintuplets born to dragon Daniel and human witch Abigayle. At thirty-four Logan, Roman, Mercedes, Sonya and Carlton are an elite team who are half human and half dragon. Needing a shadow thief for their mission, Logan captures Beyla, who performs two seemingly innocuous acts which, according to dragon legend, makes her Logan’s mate. The entire story is filled with danger, close calls, ancient lore, harrowing rescues and feats of daring and strength. Underlying all of that is the tension between Beyla and Logan….which is so much fun to watch. This is one of those fabulous stories filled with exciting characters, non-stop action, complex relationships, meticulous details, and surprises. It is creative, well written and masterfully told. I was hooked right from the beginning, and even though I knew there would be a happy ending (I checked), I often found myself holding my breath or with my stomach in knots. It is soooo good! I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I went into this not expecting to love it as much as I did, but it had me hooked from the very first chapter.
First of all… can we appreciate a shadow FMC instead of the usual shadow daddy? 👏 That alone made it feel so refreshing. I’m also not usually a huge dystopian fantasy reader, but having so much of the story set in New Orleans and Canada made the world feel so vivid and easy to picture.
That being said, it wasn’t perfect for me.
I felt like the relationship development and some of the character growth happened a little too quickly, so I didn’t get as emotionally invested as I wanted to. And after all the tension leading up to the romance… the spicy scenes were a bit underwhelming and over way too fast. 🌶️🤏
Also… without spoiling anything… the ending did that one thing that I personally cannot stand in the first book of a series. 😭 If you know, you know.
Even with those issues, I’m definitely invested in this world. While a lot was wrapped up, there are still plenty of threads left to explore, and I’m already curious to see where book two takes these characters.

This is the story of Logan Pen, a Naga or dragon, and Beyla Higgins, an Umbra or shadow walker. When Beyla steals Logan’s Telein talisman and marks him by biting his lip, neither of them realise that she’s actually claiming him as her mate. The Naga and Umbra have been sworn enemies for centuries, so things are definitely going to get interesting…..
This was the first book I’d read by this author, and I thought the characters were interesting, the world building was easy to follow, and the plot was good too with plenty of action. It was a bit slow to start, but I was happy with that as there was time to absorb all the background of the world and for the main characters to build their relationship together at a steady pace. I’ll be looking out for more stories from the Dragonborn Chronicles 🐈⬛.

This book is the start of a new dragon shifter romantasy series. That prologue really pulled me in! You put a woman having a baby in the story and I have so many questions. Great start! The premise is unique and different. That was a plus. I’m always looking for a new fantasy that stands out.
The pacing was a bit slow at first, but I held on as this book really gains its footing later on. There’s a lot of time spent on the world building, and I appreciate that especially at the start of a new series. Most romantasy series start out a little slower. The author has to establish all the “things” for the reader.
I thought the tension and conflict in this slow burn romance was solid. I thought the romance grew organically and I liked that.

3.25 stars. This story is mostly dual POV, well written, and a darkly amusing, enemies to lovers, fated mates post-apocalyptic, fantasy/sci fi romance, in a world where the fantastical is still hidden, between Beyla, the female shadow walker lead, and Logan, the male half human/half dragon shifter lead. I enjoyed the premise of this story, having never read this author before, but I struggled with engaging for part of the time, putting the story down and coming back to it multiple times. I enjoyed the world building and the community that supported Logan and, by extension, Beyla. I enjoyed the contrast between Beyla’s temperament and training and Logan’s. I enjoyed Logan’s family and the set up for future stories.

While in the past I have read cowboy romance by Susan Lutz, The Dragons Shadow is the first fantasy novel I have read by her. The first book in the Dragonborn Chronicles, the setting shows a destroyed post-apocalyptic earth with more danger and destruction coming unless it is stopped. Dragonborn commander Logan Pen and a reluctant Shadow walker, Beyla much join forces to be the full stop to the coming obliteration, the task is not easy. The attraction between them is easy and instant, simmering and sizzling. Part future science fiction and all romantasy, this is a captivating read. An impressive first novel in the series.

The characters were very complex and compelling and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and expertly drawn. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
