Saving her sister might require the ultimate sacrifice. Brenna Mason's sister has been missing for more than a week. She failed Dana years before with disastrous consequences. She won't do it again. She's determined to find Dana and bring her home. But someone is just as determined to stop her. Within hours of her arrival in town, Brenna's life is threatened. As a writer, Brenna crafts killer sentences, but she doesn't have the skills to take on a real killer. To save Dana, her only hope is to team up with a man who has his own agenda. As a former Navy SEAL, Eli Wolfe saw more than enough innocents slaughtered to populate his dreams with bloody ghosts. After his PI mentor is murdered, Eli hunts for the killer. What he finds is a woman with a mission bigger than his. But Brenna doesn't know that Eli asked Dana for a favor which might have led to her disappearance. Working together to search for Brenna's sister, they discover connections to a human trafficking ring Eli and his SEAL team encountered a few years earlier. With only 48 hours until Dana is lost in the black underbelly of human trafficking, Eli and Brenna must rescue her before the deadline. When Brenna is kidnapped by the traffickers, Eli races to find both sisters before time runs out. For Eli, the stakes have never been higher. Now that he's fallen in love with Brenna, losing her might cost Eli his sanity and his life.

Midnight Escape is fast-paced and action-packed. We get two romances in this book... Brenna and Eli and Dana and Jon. I loved the relationship between the couples as well as the friendship they all shared. They all seemed to balance each other out and knew just what needed to be said and done in difficult times.

Confession. The first time I read Midnight Escape, I had a hard time getting through it. It was not a favorite of mine. But since I've recently reread the rest of Rebecca Deel's books, I thought I would give this one another try. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it more this time around. It was probably because I knew what was going to happen.

Content: Mild violence. Talk of rape. No language. Clean romance... just kisses.

Fast Paced Romantic Suspense

Wow, this book has loads of fast paced energy. There is danger around every corner and I found myself holding my breath at one point. I love a strong make lead and this book had two! Physically and mentally tough, no nonsense, all in men. So attractive. This series is off to a fantastic start and I can't wait to read the next book!
Content: kissing, peril, violence, mention of abuse in all forms

Intense!

I really like the fast paced action and sweet romance in these Fortress Security books. This one definitely had that, but also dealt with some serious issues, mainly human trafficking. I still thoroughly enjoyed the romance(s) and especially love Brenna as a protagonist (she is brave and smart), but a lot of the plot creeped me out because of the implications and reality of human trafficking. Still a good read with a great happily ever after and a clean romance.

Great Plot and Characters...Mediocre Proofreading

Loved the characters and plot in this novel. The balance between Eli's outward good humor and charm and Jon's dark, quiet nature read well and brought to life why they made great partners. I would have rated this 5 stars were it not for the multitude of grammatical errors and the lack of clear breaks within chapters. I purchased this as a downloaded novel (Kindle) and would have to do a double-take when the action jumped from one scene to another with no visual warning. This is the first novel from Rebecca Feel that I've read and I very much enjoyed her writing. Unfortunately, whomever is proofreading/editing for her truly did this author's work a great disservice.

The ending chapters were so good. I enjoyed the overall story and style. I did find it had a few repetitive phrases that grew tiresome (licked his/her lips, sell out to the highest bidder, the threats of "breaking" etc.).

I like Eli's style!
“What about me?” Brenna asked. “I want to help.”
“Okay.” Eli grinned. “Have dinner with me.”
“That’s helping?” Color stained her cheeks. “How can you hit on me at a time like this? My sister is missing, you Neanderthal. I’m not in the market for a date.”
“Easy, sugar. You’re beautiful and provide camouflage while I ask if Red Lobster employees noticed Dana leave the restaurant.”
A small smile curved Brenna’s lips. “Well done. Mind if I use that line?”
“Absolutely. I’ll expect some thanks on your acknowledgments page.”

“Thank you for saving my sister,” she whispered.
“Uh, I saved you as well. Do I get a reward for that?” She shared another kiss. “I took out (spoilerish),” Eli murmured. Brenna pressed him backward onto her hospital pillow. His hands cupped her face as the kiss changed from soft and sweet to blistering hot. Lack of air forced her lips from his. “Have mercy, sugar. If a nurse catches me, she’ll toss me out on my backside.”

He and Brenna were good together. Honestly though, some of the BEST scenes and quotes were between the secondary characters (Eli's "Alpha with a tender spot for 1 woman" PI partner) Jon & (Brenna's broken sister) Dana. These were so touching.

Dana drew in a sharp breath. “Reach out your hand, sis. Jon’s right beside you.” Through the eerie green light of his enhanced night vision, Eli watched Dana slowly extend her hand, palm up. Jon shifted closer. “I’m here,” he whispered. He touched her hand with his fingertips at first, afraid a strong grip might send her into a panic. He wanted to hold her in his arms, doubted she’d let him. His emotions rioting all over the spectrum, Jon inched closer, moving slow until her fingers wrapped around his hand and tugged. He swallowed hard, longed to gather her into his arms and never let go. The clock in his head, however, denied the chance for more than a minute or two at most. Her hand still in his, Jon sat beside Dana, moved his hands to her forearms and let her make the next move. Jon’s heart almost leaped out of his chest when she flung herself into his arms. He pulled her close, his throat tight. “I’ve got you, baby. No one will take you from me, I promise.” He placed a soft kiss on her neck. “We’ll have to fight our way out of here. Can you run?”

Dana trembled in his arms. “What’s wrong?” “Company.” Jon hesitated. After what she’d survived in the past weeks, would his touch be distasteful to her? He hoped not since he’d dreamed for months of holding her in his arms. He swallowed hard. “We need to move fast. I’ll have to carry you, baby.” Instead of the hesitation or protest he expected, Dana wrapped her arms around his neck. His heart squeezed. No time to check her for injuries. Praying he didn’t hurt this brave woman, he lifted her from the bed.

He looked up at Dana. Tears streamed down her face. No sounds escaped. The silence wrung his heart. He almost preferred sobs to this stoic display and that said something since a woman’s tears normally sent him scrambling to the closest exit. Jon sat with his back propped against a tree, pulled her close, and wrapped his arms around her. “What if they . . .”
His arms tightened. “We’ll deal with it together.”
“We?”
“You aren’t alone anymore, baby. Never again. I’ll walk through every step of this with you. As long as you’ll allow me, we’re a team.”
Dana pressed her head against his shoulder, her face against his neck. “I’m guessing you know about my history with (spoilerish). That’s in the past, before you knew me. If Grace’s thugs assaulted me, would it . . .?” She lapsed into silence.
“Affect how I feel about you?” he asked. She nodded. “Whatever they did shames them, Dana. You aren’t to blame for anything they might have done to you. People in this line of work are masters at their trade. Nothing will affect how much you mean to me or the role I hope you’ll play in my life from now on.” She sat up to look into his eyes.
“What role?” Hope shined from her gaze.
“A permanent one. When you’re safe and on U.S. soil, we’ll talk. I meant what I said. We’ll get through this together. I’ll stay beside you all the way.”

Jon’s thumb brushed over her lower lip, light as the touch of a butterfly’s wings. “I’ll help you get on the boat, but you must trust me.”
“Will it hurt?”
He smiled. “Does a kiss hurt?”
“A kiss?” Dana whispered. “A kiss will help me into a raft in the middle of a storm?”
“Not just any kiss, baby.” His eyes glittered. “Mine.”

We need to make sure you’re okay. You’ll be able to handle anything they discover if you know the truth. It’s the unknown that gets most people. You are so strong, Dana. You already beat what (spoilerish) put you through once. If you’ve been assaulted again, we need to know. You have to be treated.” He raised her up to look into her face. “Do you understand what I’m saying? We can’t take chances with your health. No matter what the doctors tell you, you’ll deal. You’re not alone this time. We’re in this together.”
A shaky laugh escaped. “I don’t know if I’m as strong as you think.”
“I do. If you falter, reach for me. I’ll be there beside you.”

“Are you booting me out?”
“I don’t have the right to ask you to stay.”
He leaned close and kissed her until they both were short of breath. “You have the right, baby. I know where I want this relationship to go, but whether we get there is up to you.”
“Where?”
“Home. Family. White picket fence. Two dogs.” He smiled. “Everything. When you’re ready.” More tears. Dismayed, Jon swiped at the waterworks. Had he misread her feelings? Did she not want the same thing? Maybe she did, but not with him. That would kill him.
“I want that, too.”
His eyebrows shot up even as his heart leaped, joy exploding inside. “Then why all the tears?”
“I want those things, but I’m afraid.”
“Of?” She blushed and dropped her gaze to his chest. “Ah. Sex.”
Dana nodded. He nudged her chin up, waited until she looked into his eyes. “I love you, Dana. Because I love you, I’ll wait as long as it takes for you to be comfortable with that part of marriage. Make no mistake, I want to marry you the minute you give me the green light to put a wedding band on your finger. Tomorrow wouldn’t be too soon for me. The rest will come with time. I’m in no hurry. We have the rest of our lives.” He grinned. “I just want my rings on your finger to warn off all my teammates and any other men who might try to steal you from me.”
“I love you, Jon Smith.”
Satisfaction swelled in his gut. “Excellent. First stop when you’re sprung from this joint is a jewelry store. After that, we’ll talk about this fabulous job opening at Wolfe Investigations. There are two partners. One’s a hopeless hard case. The other thinks he’s a comedian and God’s gift to women. Interested?” “Depends.”
“On?”
“Will I be required to kiss the comedian?” Jon scowled. “Not if he wants to live.”
Dana laughed. “Deal. I’ve always had a soft spot for hard cases anyway.”

SWOON!

I also liked the banter between the Zoo Crew guys.
Brenna pulled back enough for Eli to get a good look at her swollen mouth. “Doc will check it once we get this bird off the ground. We’ll have company from the law before long.”
“Hey, what about me?” Ritter complained. “I was shot.”
Eli spared him a glance. “Aw, it’s just a scratch. Jarheads are wimps.”
“Scratch?” Outrage sharpened Ritter’s tone. “Bullet went all the way through my shoulder, you stupid frogman.”
“Want me to patch you up? I rock at field stitching.”
Another scowl from Ritter. “Stay away from me, you butcher. I’ve got a scar from the last job you did on me.” Brenna grinned. “Sounds like you have a tendency for injuries. Maybe you should think about a safer line of work.”
“No can do, babe. I’m an adrenaline junkie. Sitting behind a desk all day would kill me quicker than Eli the Butcher.”
Eli slanted a pointed look in Ritter’s direction. “Watch it, jarhead. This one is mine.”

Ooh so close to finishing it. I couldn’t stand it anymore.

Oh boy. Spelling mistakes, plots that totally contradict themselves, plots that don’t make sense, and Brenna is really really annoying. Eli calls her feisty, I call it being an argumentative shrew! (That’s putting it very politely!) At one point she asks Eli if it’s a possibility that Jon has ptsd and kidnapped her sister! SERIOUSLY??? The two men that are trying hard to find your sister, and you’re accusing one of them. 😱😱

Brenna’s sister Dana is missing and Eli and his partner Jon, are helping her to find her sister. Eli and Jon are both ex navy seals, who are working as private detectives until Jon is in a better place mentally. Jon is supposed to care deeply about Dana, but doesn’t notice that she’s been missing? Even though they talk on the phone regularly, and she stops answering him, he still doesn’t worry? Wow! 😳

It gets really silly with Brenna being threatened, and Jon and Eli running around doing……..????? The plot just doesn’t make any sense, and I don’t buy into Eli and Jon being really good at what they do. Brenna is a romance author, and thinks she’s amazing at research and she can solve it all on her own. Sigh……

Double packed treat - just in time for trick or treat! Suspenseful action packed and double romance.

Wolf Security a private investigation service and Fortress Security a special operations company had to work together to rescue two woman. Brenna comes to Wolf looking for her sister that is missing for two weeks. Her work and neighbors swear she is "on vacation" . Her sister pays her rent and is coming for a visit and is supposed to picked up at the airport not to mention they talk to each other every other day. Things twist n turn from there and the action heats up for what the heck....mystery, suspense, murder, kidnapping, human trafficking....oh team lots of action and intrigue. Cherry on top of this special ops mission is a romance...no two romances. Violence 2.5, sex 0 (clean) I had to think about it, it so well written the story is not lacking because of it. If you are looking for steam sex scenes this is not your book. That s is sentimental, humor and sensitive, empathy, trust building romance.

I felt like Eli and Brenna were the secondary characters. Jon's amazing skills were always being bragged about. Eli wasn't ever really needed because he always called Jon to take care of everything. It was stated many times that Eli can do what Jon does but he doesn't do it as well. It would have been better to just have the book about Jon and Dana. Brenna and Eli weren't very developed and you didn't feel their connection. I guess I want my hero to actually act like one.
The way things were worded seemed very juvenile. The whole book was like a big commercial. One of the main things I hate is not having page breaks when switching scenes. It's very annoying because you have to keep going back to re read.
The name of the series is Fortress yet they don't even show up until the very end of the book.
The ending was especially unbelievable.

Good start

I do wish the secondary couple (Jon and Dana);had their own book or their story carried over to the next book. It's a minor quibble because this book is written well enough I was invested in both cases couples. The primary couple (Eli and Brenna) meet when she runs into him while looking for her sister. He initially doesn't disclose that her sister was an informant for his PI firm and his request may have put her in danger. Eli and Jon are also former SEALS so when danger strikes they fight back and call in reinforcements from Fortress Security. Reading the second book now.

3.5 to 4 rating. I like the story lines of Rebecca Deel’s books but I find the romance side of the books unrealistic. I am fine with clean religious based books but I cannot look past the fact that the characters in these books are late 20’s to 40’s and don’t do more than hand holding and kissing before marriage. All of the characters who are Special Forces are supposed to be religious saints? The books plot is great until the underlying romance makes you want to scream. Books don’t need graphic sex scenes to be good but they need to be realistic especially if it involves romance. Overall, good story for a series with mystery and romance but unrealistic with the romance.

Overall good read, although some scenes kept my attention more than others. It was a bit confusing at times with the changing points of views and lack of spacing showing the switch (needed better editing/proof reading in general). I also thought it ended a bit abruptly, and while I appreciate a happy ending, it basically went from just meeting to happily ever after. Would have liked a bit more story.

Fantastic Read...

I love a great story that I can read and enjoy without the dirty words and scenes. This is one of those stories that draw you in and still gives great intensity and thrill. It's also an insight into a very real and troubling situation that happens to many everyday.. Human Trafficking. But Rebecca has written with great respect to what these people and those trying to rescue them go through. Would definitely recommend this great read!

Not that good

Well, I just didn't feel the love. It was too rushed and though the plot was interesting, it didn't flow smoothly. I found the two male heroes a little over the top. Silly. And then the author really had to convince us readers that as ex Seals they really were tough guys. Idk, but I didn't really like the book. I believe each hero should have had his own book. Up to you if you want to read it.

WOW! Super action packed with a fantastic romance weaved throughout. My only dislike would be the constant use of endearments throughout the book and series as well as Mrs. Deel's Otter Creek series. The stories would be better without the overuse of 'pet names'. But with that being said, the story is strong and the characters charge off the page.

An OK read. I didn't hate it... but I am doubtful if I will continue with the series...

There were so many plot devices thrown in there with very little resolution or explanation... made for a frustrating read.

I will attempt the next one in the series in the hope that we do get some answers...

Looking for a good read?

Have read all of Fortress Series & Otter Creek Series. Enough action, interaction, thrills and chills to captivate and hold my attention. The author writes without resorting to cussing and intimate details or as one reviewer said, "interesting enough without the requisite sexual encounters!"

This is the story of Jon Smith, Brenna, her sister Dana, and Eli Wolfe. It’s pretty gritty since it deals with human trafficking. I always have a hard time reading those kinds of stories, even when they are fictional. Well written and clean, although there are mentions of rape, could be triggering to some readers.

I don't remember how I ran across this author, but I have had this borrowed on KU since February. I finally decided to read it, and man....awesome read. It isn't Christian, but it is clean, curse free, and practically Christian without mention of God and a relationship with God.
There are 16 books in this series, and I can't wait to read them all

I don’t think I’ve read anything by this author, but I really like her… orthis book anyway I’m definitely going to be looking into more contact by her. I like the fact that it was nonstop adventure that had romance that wasn’t too descriptive. Anyway, I’m looking forward to hearing more about the other members of the team.

Scary, romantic, you''ll laugh, cry, gasp

I have become addicted to the Fortress Security men and how they win over their ladies. Danger, guns, threats to their very lives only increase their resolve to win over the women they are destined to love.

This was a good story pacing wise and plot wise up until like the final chapter.

I was definitely hoping we’d get a second book to focus more on Dana but instead we got a very quick wrap up for Dana and a quick wrap up for Brenna
