Five years ago, struggling singer Meiqi Chen sold her soul for fame. Now, with the only way to achieve greater success being an untimely death, the entity who has claim to her is calling in the debt owed. Presented with the choice of the end of her life or a series of increasingly immoral tasks, she embarks on a whirlwind journey with the only person capable of helping her navigate the tricks of a Devil; her biggest anti-fan.
This book is so fun but also so emotionally deep! The story centers around Meiqi's inner conflict of wanting to be loved but never feeling like she has been, which led to her selling her soul for fame, and now leads to her desperately trying to keep that fame and adoration even as her soul is in jeopardy of being taken away by one of the seven Devils.
And an unexpected anit-fan of hers is the only person who can help her on her journey.
I absolutely loved the tense relationship between her and Tripp (her anti-fan). He's a grumpy, cold kind of character whereas she's more chaotic and silly, which makes for such an angsty dynamic. (it's kind of a romantic subplot but....you'll see)
I loooved Meiqi's internal dialogue, her takes and observations of things/events is so amusing.
And I loved the comedic relief of the story, Asmodeus! I won't say much about his role in the story, but he was so charming and surprisingly endearing.
The story has some paranormal elements, but it feels very realistic and down to earth, not as fantasy-ish. The main focus is the emotions and the characters, which is my favorite :)
I had to check out this debut story from a local young author. While the genre isn’t my typical read, I really enjoyed the story. It’s really well written and kept me entertained and intrigued the whole time. I can’t wait to see future works from Samantha Mary!
