Recently dismissed from the NBA and drowning in secrets, Colson Burke runs to his lake house in search of peace, quiet, and somewhere to hide after his career implodes.

What he gets is Sadie Becker.

Sadie runs the recreation center next door and is relentlessly cheerful and impossible to ignore. She has no problem calling out the grump who moved in beside her… even as she starts to see the hurt he’s trying so hard to keep buried. She knows what it’s like to lose the future you thought was certain.

What begins as irritation turns into a push and pull neither of them planned for—and something neither of them want to lose.

Golden Hour is a grumpy-sunshine sports romance about the things that break us and the people who put us back together.

Thank you to Rachel LaBerge for the ARC. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Where the light softens, the heart remembers

Some books do not arrive with noise. They slip in quietly, almost tenderly, and before it becomes clear what they are doing, they have already settled somewhere deep. 'Golden Hour' by Rachel LaBerge is that kind of story.

From the first pages, this book carries a soft, almost fragile atmosphere. There is warmth in it, but also longing. A quiet ache moves beneath the surface of the narrative, giving each moment a reflective weight. The story unfolds with patience, allowing emotions to rise slowly and naturally, and that slower rhythm fits the heart of this novel beautifully.

What gives this story its strength is the emotional and psychological depth woven through it. These characters are not simply moving from one moment to the next. They are carrying the past with them, shaped by choices, grief, memory, and the lingering pull of everything left unresolved. That inner tension is never forced. Instead, it is built carefully, which makes the emotional impact feel all the more genuine.

The structure of the book supports that beautifully. Rachel LaBerge gives the story room to breathe, and because of that, the quieter moments land just as powerfully as the more emotionally charged ones. There is a tenderness to the writing, but never at the expense of depth. Each layer adds a little more weight, a little more intimacy, until the story begins to feel almost cinematic in the way it settles around the reader.

The pacing may feel gentle, but it never feels empty. It creates space for reflection, for connection, and for the emotional shifts within the characters to truly matter. That is where this book found its strength for me. It does not rush to be unforgettable. It simply becomes unforgettable by the way it lets its emotions linger.

'Golden Hour' is a story wrapped in warmth, memory, and quiet heartache. One that glows softly on the page, then leaves behind something harder to name once the final chapter is over.

Some stories fade when they end. This one stays in the light a little longer.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a heartfelt read. I always love when two characters are working through their own separate struggles while also learning how to lean on each other, and this story captured that so well.

Sadie was easily my favorite part of this book. She might be one of my favorite FMCs I’ve read in a while because it was so rewarding to watch her open up, grow more confident, and really start to flourish. Her journey felt genuine, and I loved seeing how she also helped Colson recognize the best parts of himself. Their connection felt natural, and together they created a story that was emotional, comforting, and easy to get invested in.

Sidenote: now I feel like I need something cherry-flavored to drink today because the Cherry Pit is honestly the cutest idea.

Golden Hour is a sports romance that balances sizzling chemistry with deep, emotional resonance by incredible author Rachel LaBerge. The premise of this story is the poignant exploration of recovery, resilience, and finding light after the "golden hour" of one’s career has seemingly passed.

Colson Burke, an NBA star whose career has just imploded under the weight of a massive scandal. is seeking a place to hide from the media and his own spiraling life, he retreats to his lake house. He expects solitude; instead, he finds Sadie Becker.

Sadie is the heart and soul of the local community recreation center. A former elite basketball player herself whose career was cut short by a devastating injury, Sadie has every reason to be bitter. Instead, she pours her energy into mentoring kids and keeping her struggling center afloat.

Sadie Becker is the resilient heroine. It is refreshing to read a main character who has "been through it," losing her professional dreams and dealing with personal grief. Her optimism doesn’t feel forced or naive; it feels like a hard-won victory.

This isn't just a romance, because LaBerge always writes characters qith dimension, it is a study on how two people handle the death of their dreams. Both Sadie and Colson are mourning the athletes they used to be.

If you love stories about overcoming toxic environments, the power of community, and finding a partner who truly "gets" your scars, this book belongs on your shelf.

My thoughts:
This book is a reason why grumpy x sunshine will always be one of my favorite romance tropes! The FMC Sadie is one of the most genuine and loving characters I have ever read about. Even with hardships that would bring any person down she does not let those moments define her and continues looking at life with a positive attitude and a beaming smile. She was just what the MMC Colson needed as our guy was going through a lot and forgot how good life could be. His grief and anxiety was portray so well and all Sadie had to do was to be that person in his corner. By seeing her light and her kindness from the very beginning, Colson fell just that much harder.

I love the small town aspect of the story! Golden Harbor is filled with so much love among the locals and for anyone who needed a break from their life (cough, Colson, cough). We see this through Sadies’ friendships and I loved her relationship with her protective best friend who made sure Sadie was not taking any crap from people who tried to dim her light. We also see this through the Rec center where Sadie taught basketball to kids!

Sadie and Colson’s relationship started out slow, but in these slow moments we were able to see the unwavering support the two had for each other. Their small, but intimate moments allowed their relationship to grow stronger and the two knew immediately that they had found the right person.

So when you need a FMC who is literally sunshine and helps a grumpy MMC find himself again, look for the sunset with Golden Harbor!

Costal small-town summer vibes? Are you freaking kidding me??? Immediately 5 stars. I mean just the cutest little cheesy sports-adjacent romance (w/ some spice obviously). I don’t know how else to describe it, but reading it just brings you some joy.

10/10 recommend (I’ve already told multiple people to move it to the top of their TBR)

4.25⭐️ 2🌶️ ARC REVIEW: 📖 GOLDEN HOUR 📖 by Rachel LaBerge ✨ This is a sweet and swoony romance that takes place in the charming coastal town of📍Golden Harbor, Michigan. There’s warmth, longing, healing, good spice, and I loved the women-in-sports theme. Sadie was a great FMC - the perfect sunshine to Colson’s grumpy. She was exactly what he needed - quiet softness to his loud darkness. They both have inner struggles to work on but they learn to lean on each other, and find their way back to their true selves. Colson’s grief and anxiety were so well-portrayed, and Sadie allowed him to just be, not needing to fill the silence. Their relationship developed naturally, and their connection felt genuine. Overall a beautiful heartfelt read woven with emotional depth that I highly recommend!

"I love knowing you.”

Colson Burke’s NBA career just blew up, so he’s in Golden Harbor to lay low. He’s staying at the house he bought for his mom, which happens to be next door to the town recreation center. Sadie Becker, a former college basketball player, manages the rec center and enlists Colson’s help with the Summer camp kids when her assistant coach is a no-show. He reluctantly agrees but says it’s just for one day. He insists he’s not coming back tomorrow but he feels good helping the kids, and Sadie’s sunny personality is hard to resist, so of course he returns the next day. 🤣

He thinks she’s all sunlight and kindness, which he needs when the grief of his mom’s death hits.
She helps him through a panic attack; she wants to wrap him up and take away his pain. He feels like he can deal with the heavy stuff when she’s around.

He finds a list in his mom’s journal, like a Summer bucket list but doesn’t know what they are. When Sadie sees it on his fridge, she knows what they mean and tells Colson she will help him check off the items. He’s so grateful to her for giving him a piece of his mom. 🥹

When a storm damages the rec center, he helps her clean it up. He’s present and shows up for her when she needs him. Behind the scowling, broken NBA player is a swoony man. He grins, he’s charming, he takes her hand without hesitation, and he squeezes her hand when she needs reassurance. He’s so dreamy.

❤️ I love her friend, Maren - what a loyal, ride-or-die friend should be 👌🏻
❤️ He’s a face-grabber 🫠

❤️ Consent king 🤴
❤️ Praise 😮‍💨
❤️ Shower 🚿 scene 🥵

Favorite quotes:
I bought my mom this house because I thought it was something she would love, a place worthy of her. Never thought I'd be the one who also needed a little Golden Harbor in my life. The universe has a funny way of lining things up.

"I don't know when it happened, but you matter in a way I wasn't prepared for."

"You have mastered that leave me alone or else look."
“Never seemed to work on you.”
“Nope. I'm not afraid of you, Colson Burke."

"Don't do that. My sunshine girl. I don't want you hiding behind anything. I want all of it."

When we sit down, he picks my wrist up, kissing the inside. My god. Is this man real?

“I barely know her. But being around her feels like I’ve finally come up for air.”

This was such a sweet, sexy, and emotional read. Golden Hour is the second book I have read by this author, and it is definitely my favorite. I just loved these two together!

Sadie in charge of Golden Harbor’s local rec center, hosting a summer camp for kids, specifically for basketball. Colson is in Golden Harbor trying to escape the hellishness that has become his life and NBA career. The two collide in a way that’s unexpected, but inevitable. When Sadie realizes that a professional basketball player is living next door to the rec center, she enlists his help in working with the kids. She slowly but surely injects some much-needed sunshine into his life. She shows up for him, and he does the same for her.

“I’m a moody bastard and she’s gracious, full of a glow I can’t quite put my finger on.”

Both have had sh!tty things happen to them (who hasn’t?), but are dealing with them in different ways, and some wounds are more fresh than others. Colson is cold and grumpy, with walls upon walls built up around him. Behind those walls is a kind soul, struggling to find light.

“She’s always like that. Selfless in a way she doesn’t even notice.”

Then we have Sadie, who is sunshine, warmth, and cares so deeply and genuinely for those around her. She pushes right past Colson’s barriers—he never stood a chance against her sweet personality. Sadie’s also definitely more forgiving toward people than they probably deserve, but all of this is why she’s Colson’s “Sunshine girl.”

“His shadows mixing with mine seem like a bad idea. The shadows I’ve done my best to tuck away, move on from, and try to smother with the good things I know are out there.”

They have so much in common, such similar pain, but they handle it completely differently. In part, it’s due to timing— Sadie’s had a lot more time to sit with her pain and come to terms with it, while Colson’s is still fresh.

“For a man who thinks nobody sees him, he sure sees everything.”

They have a love and connnection to basketball in common, but they also have hidden pain that makes them drawn to one another (no matter how hard one particular party tries to resist it—for a while, at least).

“I swear, it’s like Sadie can soften the edges. All the things I’m uncertain of, all the shit I haven’t dealt with yet—it feels less when she’s around.”

These two have such a natural connection that sneaks up on you. It’s deep in an unexpected way, and it’s so so sweet to read about. When they’re together, they’re able to fully be themselves, finding pieces of themselves they thought might be gone for good.

“You’re a light. People notice when you dim.”

Like clouds reflecting the sunset, these two found true beauty in one another’s imperfect pieces.

“In this moment, it’s clear. Sadie Becker is mine.”

Golden Hour by Rachel LaBerge is the perfect reminder of why grumpy x sunshine will always be one of my favorite romance tropes.

Sadie is hands-down one of the most genuine and radiant FMCs I’ve ever read. Even when life throws her every hardship imaginable, she refuses to let it dim her light. She faces the world with a beaming smile, endless kindness, and a positivity that feels so real and refreshing. She was exactly what Colson needed—our broody, grieving MMC who had forgotten how good life could be. His anxiety and grief are portrayed with such raw honesty, and all it took was Sadie standing in his corner, shining her light, for him to start believing again. From the very first moment, Colson was falling hard for her warmth.

I adored the small-town setting of Golden Harbor, Michigan. The community is full of love and support, especially for anyone who shows up needing a fresh start (looking at you, Colson). Sadie’s tight-knit friendships, especially with her fiercely protective best friend, and her work at the rec center coaching kids’ basketball made the town feel so warm and alive. The way the locals rally around each other is everything I love about small-town romances.

Their relationship builds slowly and beautifully. In those quiet, intimate moments, you see the unwavering support they offer each other, and it’s clear almost immediately that they’ve found their person. Watching Sadie help Colson rediscover joy while he stands up for what he believes in made them feel like the perfect match. Their chemistry sparks from that first awkward meeting—when one of her kids accidentally hits his car and she goes over to apologize to a very grumpy neighbor. From coaching basketball together to all the sweet little moments outside the rec center, everything about them just works.

Rachel LaBerge truly gets better with every book. This story had me laughing, smiling, kicking my feet, and swooning hard, all while delivering some deeply emotional moments that made the characters even more layered and relatable. She handles mental health, grief, depression, confidence, and personal growth with such care and attention to detail. Sadie may be sunshine personified, but she’s also someone who’s had to pivot and rebuild after heartbreak—showing that sometimes the brightest smiles hide the heaviest burdens. Colson’s journey through his own struggles is equally powerful. Their relationship feels cathartic and real: two people supporting each other through the quiet moments, no grand speeches needed. (That lake scene? Absolutely heart-wrenching and beautiful.)

Thank you, Rachel LaBerge, for this ARC—my honest thoughts are that this book is a gem. Highly, highly recommend! 🌅💛

Finding the silver lining in everything is not easy to do. It is easy to get bogged down by life and focus on what is going wrong instead of focusing on what is going right. The people who are able to stay positive and encouraging are true gifts. Rachel LaBerge gives readers a FMC in her latest book, Golden Hour, just like this. She wrote a story filled with so much raw emotion, it is easy to connect with our MCs both and want them to find their happiness.

Sadie is so fun to read about. She exudes sunlight wherever she goes and truly does find the positive in everything. When a grumpy, closed off neighbor moves in, she is determined to break through his defenses and make him smile again. She truly has a heart of gold. She also loves her working at the town’s rec center, coaching basketball, and hanging out with friends. She has created community within her small town and it is evident with how people view her.

Colton is running, needing a fresh start. What he thinks to be a small town where he can hide and sulk, quickly turns into everything he didn’t know he needed. As someone who has forgotten how great life can be, his radiant neighbor takes every opportunity to remind him. It is almost serendipitous who he ends up living next door to. He fled the pro basketball world just to move next to someone who coaches and loves the sport with her whole heart.

Rachel builds their relationship slowly, but surely. Each interaction between these two chips away at the grumpiness that Colton is trying so hard to hold to. Every conversation goes a little deeper than the last, truly allowing our MCs to see the inner workings of one another. Their vulnerability with each other reminds readers that finding the good in things is a choice. Bad things happen, which you need to deal with, but how you deal with them is up to you. Truly a wonderful story that I couldn’t stop reading. I am also so glad to have found another sports romance that features basketball!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

I think Rachel LaBerge gets better with every book she writes. This book had me swooning so hard and I just fell in love with these characters. This story had me laughing, smiling, kicking my legs from swooning and then left me with a beautiful ending! There are a few emotional parts in the story but it just made these character even better because of it.

Colson is a basketball player that finds himself in trouble after a heated argument at a game so he ends up leaving Chicago to go to a small town in Michigan. He just wants to be by himself and be grumpy. LOL...But that's not going to happen in this town.

Sadie runs a recreation center and helps coach kids to play basketball. When one of the kids accidentally hits the neighbors car she goes over to apologize only to come face to face with Colson. He's broody as all get out but you can tell these two are going to have great chemistry.

As these two start helping these kids play ball they will also start to realize they may have feeling brewing between them. I just loved everything about this story. I loved how Sadie was independent and resilient. Colson stands up for the things he believes in and I feel like that made him a better person. These two together were the perfect match.

You will also enjoy how the community comes together for each other as well. I loved getting to know this town and her friends. I also loved all the little things they did together outside of the recreational center. I wish our small town did those kind of things. If you want a cozy book to curl up with that will take your mind away from life for awhile I would HIGHLY recommend this book.

Thank you Rachel LaBerge for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

ARC Review: Golden Hour

[I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author. This review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion]

THE WHAT
We follow Colin, a NBA player who is suspended from his team after a public outburst. Needing space and distance from the spotlight, he retreats to the quiet town of Golden Harbour. There he meets Sadie, a fellow basketball lover who runs the rec centre next door to his home. Their unexpected connection turns into something deeper, pushing both of them to grow, both personally and professionally.

THE VIBE
Slow burn, small town, basketball romance, grumpy MMC, sports romance, grumpy x sunshine, spicy, cozy.

THE HOW
The story is told through a dual POV. The author balances the romance with heavier themes really well. The basketball element added a connective layer between the characters without overpowering the story.

THE HIT
I really appreciated the character growth. Both characters had to confront grief, toxic dynamics, and difficult professional situations, and you could actually see them evolve through the story. It wasn’t just a romance for the sake of romance. There were layers to it, which made the relationship feel more genuine.

THE MISS
At times I wished certain emotional moments were explored just a bit deeper. Some of the heavier themes especially around their past toxic relationships, I was curious to know more about.

THE REC:
If you like small-town romances with sports elements, this is a great read. Bonus points if you’re a basketball fan.

THE OVERALL: Overall, I would rate this book as follows:

⭐️Overall Rating: 4/5

🔥Spice Rating : 3/5

QOTD: Do you like sports romances, or do you usually skip them? 🏀

This was my first book by Rachel and I really enjoyed it! Sadie really was sunshine personified, but she definitely still had her struggles. It was great to see her find herself again during this story after being hurt by her ex. I loved that she made a list of the things she wanted to do during the summer so that she would always remember who she wanted to be and how she wanted to live. It was also great seeing her sunshine ways bring out a new side of Colson. Colson was a bit grumpy at the start of the book because he had also just been through a lot in his life. But, once he met Sadie, it was game over! He still had times when he was a bit down and out, but I loved watching Sadie help him through that. Colson also eventually realized that he was the storm clouds to Sadie’s sunshine, and there couldn’t be one without the other. I loved that Sadie and Colson were both athletes and could bond over their love of basketball. They both had injuries that affected their basketball careers, and while that was hard on them, it was one more thing for them to bond over and bring them closer together. Watching Sadie and Colson get closer and closer during this story was amazing, and I love that when they had a slight hiccup, they talked it through and figured things out together so they could get through it. I’m excited to see if Rachel will give us more from Golden Harbor, and I will definitely be reading more of Rachel’s books in the future!

Another great book by Rachel LaBerge!

This book is about two people trying to find themselves, and they do, but they also find each other. Colson blew up at a coach and now hiding out from the public and his ruined reputation. Unsure if he would ever be able to continue to play in the NBA again. Leaving to a small town, he meets Sadie. Sadie is recovering from a broken engagement, one where her ex took all of her sunshine. Together (ans through the love of basketball and the pain of everything) they find themselves and each other.

This was a cute read and honestly perfect for the summer. A summer romance that leaves you feeling seen. With the perfect amount of feels and spice, this book is sure to heat things up. That is, if like the weather doesn’t already do that for you.

The only reason I took off a star is because somethings went down with her ex (a tantrum he came and had) and I just didn’t like it. But, it was important to the story and I totally get why it was in the book. It just wasn’t my favorite part. Everything else in this book was great and well, thats expected with Rachel’s writing. Great reads all around all the time!

So add this book to your tbr if you need a summer read or need another basketball player fictional boyfriend on your roster!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️a soft, sun kissed romance with just enough heat to make your heart flutter
🌶️🌶️slow burn that ignited

Colson and Sadie! My little heart is singing and I'm feeling a tug on my heart because I miss this couple so much already. Golden Hour captured my attention because of its cover and author and its dedication kept it...and the character development and rich plot kept my heart.

The depth of the grief and trauma that this couple went through separately and their coming together in one of my favorite tropes, Grumpy X Sunshine, slayed me.

The power and beauty in healing, timing and the courage to allow someone in to see the parts of you changed by immense grief will always stay with me. Rachel's hand is beautiful and her grace and elegance in developing these beautiful souls makes this SO UNIQUE.

When the intimacy deepened, it was warm and meaningful with a two chili spice level that adds just the right amount of heat without ever overpowering the emotional core. It’s the kind of closeness that feels like trust first, desire second, and love all the way through.

The writing glowed. The kisses were lingering. The touches stuck with me. The colors of the settings and the quotable quotes are what I'll leave with you here.

“If I’m the sun then Colson is my sunset. The kind of ending you wait your whole life to find.”

I fear I need more of this type of writing Rachel! I'm ruined.

Thank you so much for the gifted ARC Rachel. It's been a pleasure being on your ARC team for this new release!

This book while having a grumpy sunshine trope also in true Rachel Laberge fashion delves into the mental health and struggles everyone goes through behind the scenes. The attention to detail on how people deal with grief, love, depression, confidence, change in circumstances and life is expertly done and one of my favorite things about this author. Sadie (sunshine) and Colson (grumpy) each have so much more behind these descriptions. Sadie while an upbeat and bubbly person has also had many struggles throughout her life causing her to pivot and reestablish her goals for her life. Sadie is a perfect example of someone who masks symptoms and sometimes that sunshine has heartbreak behind the scenes. This side of Sadie is so relatable. It shows that sometimes to get through something you need smile/laugh or you would cry. Sadie and Colson together are a power force. Since Sadie is farther along in her healing journey she is able to be there for Colson sometimes just as a physical presence, no words needed. When Sadie comes upon Colson in the lake absolutely heart wrenching, wholesome and such a turning point. This quiet and complete support of another person is the cornerstone of this relationship.
"You’re wrong—I do need you. And if I’m the sun… that means you’re the sunset. All those gorgeous colors, changing the entire sky, making the wait feel so worth it." Sadie and Colson are life goals. As always this romance has so many more layers then just a romance novel and feels so cathartic. Thank you to Rachel Laberge the author for this ARC, all opinions are my own.

Dual POV

I adored Golden Hour. It was spicy, it had pain, it had small town with summer vibes. It was just a good read. Colson is a NBA player who may or may not have a team next season. He's been through some stuff recently- an injury, a breakup, his mother passing, and a public fallout with his team. The guy just needs to disappear for a few days, weeks even, to process everything and figure out his next move. What I loved about Colson, is while he's grumpy in the beginning, he doesn't end that way and he's fun of sunshine by the end. Also, I think he's a grumpy cinnamon roll. He steps up and takes care of our girl Sadie and her rec league kiddos and I just loved him for it.

Sadie, our FMC, runs the rec center in the summer and a basketball program. When Colson moves in next door, and one basketball size dented car later, Sadie manages to convince Colson to help with the kiddos. I loved Sadie. She always knew exactly what to say or how to move around Colson. She's his Sunshine Girl, but she's also mine too!

Okay, can we talk about the Cherry Pit restaurant? Where can I find one of these? Should we all start one up in our own small towns? I mean I too live off a lake... I feel like it'd be perfect and different enough. What do you say Rachel? HAHA Seriously, this town of Golden Harbor and the people were so good for Colton and Sadie both and I adored it. Also, that easter egg to From the Sidelines was fun! I definitely recommend this one!

I'm so sad I didn't like this one more😭 I'd been counting down the days until Golden Hour landed on my kindle, and to have it just not be 100% for me is crushing haha. Buttttt it has Rachel's signature style that I love, so even if it didn't 100% hit I still enjoyed it!

The storyline was super fun too; having it wrap around the rec center and the kids that played there made me love it even more!

In the end, it just comes down to not every book is for every reader. Either way, Rachel is still a favorite🤭 I am thrilled to have been able to be an early reader for this and I can't wait to see what Rachel writes next!

Such a cute and heartwarming book! I really loved the dynamic between Colson and Sadie—it’s one of my favorite types of pairings. Colson with his grumpy, guarded attitude and Sadie coming in like a burst of sunshine was such a perfect contrast. Their personalities balanced each other so well, and watching those two energies collide made the story really enjoyable.

Colson starts off very set in his ways, carrying his own struggles and emotional walls, and it was great to see how Sadie slowly works her way into his world. She doesn’t force anything or try to change him outright—she just shows up with her warmth, optimism, and steady support. Her brightness really brings out a softer side of Colson that you can tell has been hidden for a long time.

What I loved most was the journey Colson goes through throughout the book. Seeing him grow, open up, and allow himself to accept the happiness and care that Sadie offers was really touching. Sadie being there for him through it all—supporting him, encouraging him, and believing in him even when he struggles to believe in himself—made their relationship feel genuine and heartfelt.

Together they are absolutely adorable. Their banter, their little moments of connection, and the way their relationship grows over time made this such a fun and comforting read. It’s one of those stories that leaves you smiling because the characters just fit so perfectly together.

This book was not what I expected. I went into it pretty much blind, and once I started reading I quickly realized it deals a lot with grief.

Colson, the MMC, lost his mother a few months earlier and is still really struggling with her passing. On top of that, something happened during one of his NBA games that has him questioning both his future and his career. Looking for some space, he heads to Golden Harbor and stays in the house he bought for his mom before she passed. His plan is simple: keep to himself, process everything, and figure out what comes next.

But that plan quickly changes when he meets Sadie, the coach at the rec center next door.

Sadie is the total sunshine to Colson’s grumpy, closed off personality. What I really liked about her is that she’s interested in Colson not because he’s an NBA player, but because she sees the person behind the fame. She eventually convinces him to help coach the kids’ basketball team, and that’s where things start to shift for him.

As they spend more time together, they slowly start opening up and leaning on each other. What begins as friendship and support gradually turns into something deeper, with sparks neither of them really expected.

Overall, this was such a sweet and emotional read. I especially connected with Colson’s grief over losing his mother, and that made parts of the story hit a little harder for me personally. Watching him slowly heal and open himself up again was really touching.

This was my first Rachel Laberge book and I really enjoyed it. It follows NBA star Burke who is dealing with injury, a blow up with his team, and the loss of his mother. He retreats to the small town in Michigan to disappear from the world, lick his wounds, and wallow in his own misery. However right next door is a rec center staffed by the “Sunshine Girl” Sadie Becker who is college basketball royalty and recovering from a called off engagement. It’s a story of two individuals trying to find themselves through their own personal traumas. Sadie has been working on herself for about a year, so she’s farther along in the process but recognizes in Colson where she was months ago. Ever the optimist, she tries to infuse Colson’s days with purpose and smile.

Colson can’t help but to fall for Sadie and opens up to her about the circumstances of why he’s here, what happened, and she helps him navigate what’s next. When Sadie faces her own personal crisis that threatens to erase the sunshine from her sunny disposition, Colson is all in to ensure Sadie doesn’t lose herself. It really is a story of two polar opposites coming together and making each other stronger, better, than without. Laberge has taken the reader on a journey, delving into both characters, what makes them tick, their insecurities, and what they need to make it to the other side.

An emotional but fun read, looking forward to seeing more of what Laberge creates.

Colson is grieving the loss of his mother while also struggling with the fallout from an altercation with his NBA coach. He flees to the town he used to visit with his mom and to the house he bought for her. He’s hoping for a quiet summer where he can continue grieving and hide from the press.

But that doesn’t happen when he meets bubbly, sunshine-filled Sadie. She works at the local rec center in her small town and coaches basketball for kids. She keeps crossing paths with the reclusive Colson. Sadie is well loved in Golden Harbor, Michigan, by her friends, family, and community.

Can Colson continue to hide away in his mom’s house, or will Sadie help him navigate his grief and NBA struggles? Can they protect their hearts over the summer?

Colson and Sadie’s story is beautiful and full of self-discovery and emotional growth. Colson is a true grumpy character, while Sadie radiates sunshine and is the embodiment of warmth and light. This trope was spot on, especially with the mental health representation. I truly grieved with Colson as he reflected on his relationship with his mom. I admired Sadie so much and everything she has overcome in her life—yet she still manages to see the good in so many things and people.

This was a quick, enjoyable read filled with emotion, and I’m excited to read more from Rachel LaBerge!

This was such a sweet sunshine x grumpy romance book set in a small beach town in Michigan. While this book was sweet there was a lot of heavy emotional topics covered including loss of a parent, anxiety and panic attacks. I love how Rachel LaBerge keeps her characters so real.

Colson is reeling from the death of his mother and an altercation on the NBA court that gets him dismissed from his team. He retreats to his mothers beach house in Golden Harbor. He is a perpetual storm cloud with a permanent scowl fixed on his face until he meets Sadie who just happens to own the small rec center next door to him. Sadie hosts a summer program that focuses on basketball and Colson and her paths continue to cross until they are both seeking out each other. Sadie helps bring back Colsons light and he helps Sadie remember what love is all about.

The banter between Colson and Sadie is amazing but the deep conversations about life and their feelings was what made this book perfect. It's refreshing seeing characters who struggle with anxiety and depression and how they are able to overcome those obstacles. Really enjoyed everything about this book.

I know I probably say this all the time when it comes to reading Rachel's books, but this one is without a doubt my favorite.

To start, the story is just so natural and so beautiful that you are along for the ride nicely tucked in. The world that these characters are in, is such a found family, small community, magical vibes that you just want to take a trip there. Of course theres sports and romance, but thats not my favorite part of the book. Its the characters. Its the way you can FEEL them. You feel everything with them. Sadie, my girl. She is just a hard working girlie who wants to do everything for everyone, but doesn't know how to do things for herself. I feel you girlie. ON SO MANY LEVELS. The way she finally feels like herself again with Colson, its what you want in a relationship. Now, my boy Colson. I messaged Rachel and actually told her how much I related to Colson. From his emotional baggage, his attitude and his demeanor, only someone who has gone through the same pain as he has can relate. You can feel everything that he is feeling, especially his grief. Grief... grief isn't something thay you can properly explain but once you feel it, you relate to it everywhere. Thank you for creating a story where you can feel and relate to characters in situations thay kight be different from yours, but can relate all the same.

Blair Miller...From the Sidelines novel mention (I was an ARC reviewer for this novel and rated it 5 stars.)
Yah, a new Ember and Ashes facility! Blair, you continue to be a bad a$$ business woman.

There are moments in this book which feel like they progress slowly. I feel that is done with intention. The slower pace allows for reflection on the characters parts as well as the readers.

Firstly, I need to thank the author.
So, Rachel, thank you for writing this story. For realistically writing about Colson's grief in losing the only parent he's known.
I've been through the same experience in recent years when I lost my mum. Through Colson, I felt seen and understood. Grief isn't linear, and Colson's journey is a great example of this.

Grief and loss isn't always found just in someone passing away, it can be for a life and dream you thought was going to be yours, reflected so well in Sadie's journey.

This book was everything I needed it to be. The grief and the darkness giving way to a new life, new dreams, warmth and love. It's the promise of better times ahead.

Colson is such a great grumpy MMC. His cranky side made the nice moments sweeter.

Sadie is selfless and all things warm and soft. She's also determined and tenacious, and has a gift for breaking down Colson's walls.

Alongside the sweetness of a small town romance sits just the right amound of spice.

And a playlist! She gave us a playlist!

You should read this book if you love:
- Open door romance (plenty of spice)
- Sports romance
- Grumpy x sunshine
- Small town romance
- Pain and healing
- Dual POV

Golden Hour is available now, including on KU.

Thank you to Rachel LaBerge for the complimentary copy of this book. The views and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I devoured this book in ONE sitting. This is a new author to me and once I saw the trope list for this book I had to read it.

With that being said, grumpy x sunshine is one of my favorite tropes in romance books. I absolutely loved how it was done in this book. Sometimes the grumpy can border mean or unlikable - but not with Colson. He remained likable and relatable throughout the entire book.

This book did have some heavy topics (death of parent/off page) but it was balanced with some really sweet moments as well.

Sadie was the perfect sunshine to Colson’s grumpy; without being over the top or ditzy. She also let him be who he while continuing to show up for him.

Their relationship was so sweet - and watching Colson’s walls come down around Sadie had me hooked. One of my favorite things in a book is to watching the slow burn pay off.

I also loved that being with Colson wasn’t Sadie’s entire personality. She just didn’t end up being a FMC who drops everything to be with a professional athlete or plays games or tricks to get their attention. I liked that she had her own story and journey through this book.

I will going back and reading everything this author has written and will continue to read what she puts out next.

I had the opportunity to read Golden Hour early, and I really enjoyed it. I relate to both characters in many ways. I know what it is like to lose someone you love, and I found that the author captured what it feels like and how empty and guideless life can be after. It was nice to see Burke work through his grief, especially with Sadie. She was absolutely amazing. What a fierce and incredible woman. Her hard work and determination are so admirable. She clearly works hard for the things she wants, yet is not afraid to ask and accept help when needed. I love the Dual POV. I thought the spice was amazing, five stars. This is my first basketball romance, and I found it fun to follow. It was nice that the characters were able to bond over that.

Hit: Both characters worked through their issues and helped each other get through daily life. I also enjoyed that there was no third act break up. I am always reading with anxiety, waiting for it to happen, so I was happy Burke stayed.
Miss: I felt the chapters picked up directly after each other way too many times. It would be nice to spread the story a bit more, which is the only reason I gave it four stars, but other than that, an amazing and heartwarming story.
I also enjoyed this cherry fest and it had me wanting to go!

This sports romance brings both the sweetness and the spice. Often when I am really enjoying a book I get caught up in it and just let myself become immersed in the story and then when it is time for a review I struggle to find words for the feelings and joy it gave me. This is one of those books and I am struggling to find the words to convey its magic. At its core it is the story of two people trying to find their way when the future they felt was certain disappears.

The lake setting and the community that supports and protects their own, even famous NBA stars in hiding, is the perfect backdrop for the story. The Cherry Pit was such a fun addition to the story.Colson and Sadie are the epitome of grumpy x sunshine, but somehow they seem to get each other. I liked the way they showed up for and supported each other as they each worked through their stuff. Sadie’s desire to take the time to enjoy more sunsets is one I firmly endorse and try to do as often as possible. This is a story that made me feel all the emotions as I enjoyed Colson and Sadie’s story.

I recommend that you go grab a copy if you enjoy grumpy x sunshine sports romances.

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
