About the author

Ann Mah is the author of the novel Jacqueline in Paris (due out Sept 2022) as well as four other books, including the USA Today bestseller and Indie Next pick, The Lost Vintage. Her food memoir, Mastering the Art of French Eating, was an Amazon best book of 2013, and a winner of the Elle readers prize.

Ann is a regular contributor to the New York Times Travel section, and her articles have also appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, the Washington Post, The Best American Travel Writing 2017, Washingtonian magazine, Vogue.com, BonAppetit.com, TheKitchn.com, and other publications.

As the recipient of a James Beard Foundation culinary scholarship, Ann studied in Bologna, Italy. She also holds the Level 2 Award in Wine and Spirits with distinction from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET).

I really enjoyed this book, but not because of the wine references. The book takes place in France and has two story lines. One is about a modern day woman, Kate, who returns from California to visit her family's winery while preparing to take the Master of Wine test. The other story line, which I really enjoyed, deals with the German occupation of France in WWII. Clues to the activities of family living then were found in an old storage area. Kate her cousin's wife, Heather, dig deeper into the story of Kate's great aunt Helene and discover surprising family secrets. I would definitely recommend this book.

It’s a great, unique story. I have a greater appreciation for how wine is made and the familial connection and heritage.

I thought the story unveiled itself slowly. But now that I’m done reading it, I get the pace.

I feel like there are so many WWII historical fiction but this unique tale, involving wine making, hidden caves, and resistance fighters is what drew me in.

Worth a long slow read.

I would give this book a ten out of ten stars it was really interesting reading from both the past and present timeline in the book it was fast, easy to follow i loved learning about Burgnedy in France it sounds really beautiful i would highly recommend it for sure 1000%!!! I loved everything about this book the story!!!

This book looked at the war from a unique perspective. It was very enlightening. I would highly recommend and will be looking for other books by this author.
