Early Reader Reactions
“Stayed up way too late reading this — the tension never lets up.”
“Dark, gripping fantasy with characters that feel real.”
“High stakes, twists I didn’t see coming, and a strong start to a series."
When the war ended eighteen years ago, it left more than scars—it severed the realm’s connection to magic. Now rot spreads through the soil, sickness devours the cities, and Arine’s father is dying because of it.
Desperate to save him, Arine sets out to find medicine, only to fall into the hands of the King who believes her bloodline can restore the lost magic—and who will use her father’s life to control her.
Forced into a perilous journey to the rotting heart of the realm, Arine must rely on a prince with his own agenda, a charming ally with a hidden past, and a band of companions whose secrets could destroy them before they ever reach their goal.
As betrayal and truth twist together, Arine learns that healing the world may demand a price she can’t bear—and that the greatest danger isn’t what waits in the Decayed Lands, but who walks beside her.

Brittany M. York is a fantasy author who weaves stories of ruin, resilience, and the fragile magic that binds us all. Her love for epic fantasy novels started in her childhood when she read her first series by Terry Brooks. Since then, she has dreamed of making her own contribution to the writing community she has cherished her whole life. In her debut novel, The Withered Realm: Inheritance, a daughter must confront the truth of her family’s past, learn to trust unlikely allies, and find within herself the power to heal a dying world.
When she isn’t building worlds scarred by magic and lost legacies, Brittany spends her days in Texas balancing writing, motherhood, and her love for traveling. She believes the best stories remind us that even when everything falls apart, there’s always something worth rebuilding.
Choppy start. Lots of flowery writing. Once the story settles in it is very good entertainment. Hard to be unique in this genre, but there was some solid world building. Looking forward to the next book.
Français ⬇️ I've ARC read Inheritance from Brittany M. York. This is the first book of The withered realm serie. When the war ended 18 years ago, it left more than scars—it severed the realm’s connection to magic. I enjoy reading it; from the very first chapter, I was captivated by the story, and every twist and turn truly surprised me. Everything is very well-crafted and well-structured. It's a real adventure, rich in stakes for all the characters. Each has their own motivations, and our heroine has to navigate them all. The magic system seems new to me, but it's not very prominent in this first volume. So, I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel for that reason. The characters are very well-developed. I enjoyed them all, and you can tell the author put a lot of thought into their creation, going far beyond what's simply mentioned in the book. The writing is good, but choppy. I really feel like the book has been shortened, perhaps even too much for my taste. It's not a long book, but certain parts of the journey deserve their own chapters, especially the first section, up to the inn. Personally, I prefer more substantial books. The last chapter kept me on the edge of my seat, and the suspense was truly unbearable! It will make you reconsider all of our heroine's choices. A nice bonus: this is a real slow burn. And perhaps that's a question of why choose, who knows? And that's precisely what I like! In short, for a first volume, I didn't find any errors or inconsistencies, which is why I'm giving it a little 4 stars. I absolutely loved it and I'm eagerly awaiting volume 2 :)

The Withered Realm: Inheritance opens with rot of land, of magic, of trust and never loosens its grip. Brittany M. York delivers a dark epic fantasy where decay is not just environmental, but political and deeply personal.
Eighteen years after a devastating war severed the realm’s connection to magic, the consequences feel immediate and suffocating. Crops fail. Sickness spreads. Hope thins. At the center stands Arine, driven not by prophecy or ambition, but by desperation to save her dying father. That emotional anchor gives the story weight from the first page.
Arine is a compelling protagonist resilient but not invulnerable, determined yet forced into impossible compromises. When the King discovers her bloodline may be the key to restoring magic, her father’s life becomes leverage. What follows is a tense, high stakes journey into the Decayed Lands, where alliances are fragile and every companion harbors secrets.
York excels at sustaining tension. The prince with his own agenda, the charming ally with a hidden past, and the shifting loyalties within the group create a constant undercurrent of unease. Betrayals feel earned rather than shocking for shock’s sake, and the twists land with emotional impact.
The world building is grim and immersive. Magic, once taken for granted, is now something corrupted and costly. The central question isn’t simply whether Arine can restore it but whether the price of doing so will demand more than she is willing to give.
For readers who enjoy morally gray allies, perilous quests, and heroines forced to choose between personal love and greater salvation, The Withered Realm: Inheritance is a strong, tension driven start to a promising dark fantasy series.
I'm interested in seeing where this story is going. It had all the elements necessary for an engaging slow burn romantasy. Arine is the key to restoring magic throughout the realm but at what cost? With a realm once full of magic begins spreading rot it's only a matter of time before rot and sickness devours everything. When a routine trip to find medicine for her ailing lands her in the King's sights; Arine finds herself on a perilous journey to find the source of the rot and heal the land.
With a ragtag team of companions including the King's nephew Derik who is keeping secrets of his own, a charming companion and his sister who are adamant about keeping Arine safe on this journey as well as a host of other traveling companions who also hold secrets unbeknownst to Arine.
With a jour fraught with dangers unknown Arine is determined to right the wrong of her mother (or so she believes) the further this journey takes her the more deception, betrayal and secrets began to intertwine with one another making it difficult for her to discern fact from fiction as well as ally from foe.
Time is of the essence and Arine is determined to see things through until she realizes that the real may not be the rot spreading across the realm, but who walks beside her on this journey and what their true agenda is. Nothing is as it seems and there are wolves hiding in sheep's clothing and it will be up to Arine to separate the herd, if she lives long enough to do so.
Hey, let me start by saying I liked this book …….. a lot! I read it in one day! It’s an interesting premise in that the land is failing and ‘rotting’. There are haves and have-nots and those of the royal family and their hangers on are the haves. The heroine discovers her late mum was to blame for everything and is tasked to bring magic back into the world. I liked the world building, and as for the characters, you could suspect them all of wanting to see the heroine fail and this comes across strongly in the chapters. In fact, the ragtag group that sets out to restore magic, all appear to have grievances against each other. I can’t find anywhere that tells me if there is going to be a follow-up and the ending of the book would lead one to believe there will be, so I’m holding my breath in anticipation. Hence the four stars instead of five. Yep, don’t let four stars put you off as this is a book worth reading!
The Withered Realm: Inheritance is a refreshing addition to the fantasy genre. Arine is exactly the kind of protagonist I love—determined, vulnerable, and incredibly easy to root for. Her epic journey alongside Prince Derik is more than just a quest to save magic; it’s a deep exploration of trust, sacrifice, and the complexities of human relationships.
The author does a fantastic job of keeping the plot moving at a breakneck speed without sacrificing character depth. I found myself genuinely invested in their survival and their bond. Be warned: the plot twist at the end is a total game-changer! I stayed up way too late finishing this because I simply couldn't put it down. Highly recommend for fans of high-fantasy quests and character-driven drama. I can’t wait for the sequel!
This is the type of fantasy novel I love reading. World building is perfect, characters are fleshed out with growth, plot was plotting, and plot twist shocking! There's not one thing I didnt love about this book. But my favorite part was Arine. She's perfection as a character. She has her vulnerabilities and her flaws but shes so easy to love. Her voice and her actions had me rooting for her the entire time. At first, I hated who I dubbed Prince douchebag but like a genius, the author made me love him. That is talent. I very much look forward to what else this author will write and create.
I really enjoyed reading this book due to its plot and very interesting story, but for me personally the downside was the character’s somewhat youngish behavior and responses. I guess it all comes down to personal taste. I am usually drawn to more complex characters that add another level of mystery to the book. It also needed a bit more depth and world building. Having said that, this is still an enjoyable read with plenty of action, twists and likable characters 🌺.
A great read that left me stunned at the end! Arine's singular mission to help her father turns into something far bigger than she ever anticipated. The characters and action kept me fully engaged, and I was constantly guessing what would happen next. This story stayed with me long after I finished, and I can’t wait to get answers to all my burning questions. I’m invested in Arine’s plight and eager to see what happens next.
At first I thought it was going to be similar to hunger games then it went a different way, but I still enjoyed it. The world was interesting and I thought the dynamic of the group was fun and entertaining. I'm really hoping the next book comes out soon because then end was a shock!
Solid read that has me impatiently anticipating a sequel, or two. The world building is excellent; the kind of lived-in ruin that gives a desolate background to the development of characters. A fantasy read not entirely disassociated from our times.
I enjoyed reading this. It took me a little bit to get into but once I did I couldn't put it down. Very well written story with great dynamic in the group that was entertaining. I really look forward to the next story to see how this continues, the end of this was shocking.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. This story follows Arine as she journeys to cure the realm of the rotting sickness. There are fantastical forest monsters, slaver brutes, and deceptive companions around every corner. In my opinion, the writing style was a bit clunky but the premise of the story is very good and I hope that this series continues to improve. It does end on a big cliffhanger.
