Komiren, Fox God of the Forest Shrine, has been alone for centuries. Duty is no longer enough, but with eternity staring him down, his options for companionship are limited.
Cerdei the Lantern Spirit hasn’t been wandering this nebulous world just long enough to know he wants nothing to do with the lazy Fox God who spends more time sleeping than answering prayers. He’s content to walk his path alone, even if it does mean walking straight towards oblivion.
In this world, Fate always has a plan; whether or not you want to fall in with it, though, is something much less certain.
Slow, sad, hurt/comfort fiction inspired by Japanese mythologies of local gods and lost spirits.
While it does tug at the heartstrings, I felt there was something missing from the soul-bound link between god and ghost. I don't think I understood what happened between Ren and Cerdei when they first met, so they way they acted towards each other confused me. The plot does reveal a few things, but perhaps I would have felt the angst more if we'd witnessed the flashback of their first meeting rather than had a slightly muddied recollection from Ren's (understandably) messy memories. I didn't need the overall reason, just their behaviour to understand where they both stood before the story began. TL;DR: A little bit more development showing Ren and Cerdei in the "before" time would have been nice.
But all that aside, I really like the depressed fox god who just wants companionship, and especially his mysterious "friend" Raven who had all the eerie odd-yet-wholesome vibes of a Studio Ghibli character (plus they aren't just a side note; they have an actual character arc of sorts too). The writing is atmospheric, and probably best suited for someone who likes introspective cozy fantasy.
This author is such a gifted writer and storyteller. This story was amazing. I started it finished it in one sitting. I admire someone who can craft a story and bring it to life.
