A gentleman sworn to protect his family’s secrets. A young lady determined to uncover them. And a marriage neither of them planned.
“Beware of poking your nose into our affairs,” he growled. “Do not doubt there will be hell to pay if you breathe one word of what you saw last night to anyone.”
Verity Drake knows the Reeves family are not who they claim to be. Ever since they arrived at Reeves Hall, she has sensed something strange beneath their polished manners and guarded ways; and she is determined to uncover the truth.
Harry Reeves is equally determined to stop her, turning her curiosity into a battle of wills neither of them intends to lose.
But when scandal threatens to destroy Verity’s reputation, there is only one an inconvenient marriage to the very man who has been her adversary.
Bound together by duty neither anticipated, their simmering tension gives way to desire—and then to something far more love. Yet the secrets Harry guards are not merely his own, and when the truth emerges, it will force them both to confront an impossible question.
What truly makes a family—blood, law, or love?
Because some truths cannot be hidden forever… and some bonds are stronger than fate itself.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
This is the third book in the series and centres around one of the younger Reeves, Horis (known as Harry to the local English community). We get a bit of back story of Horis and his history on Uvon before the family and household's banishment, leading us to understand how he was burnt in a previous relationship, and how he negatively views himself in comparison to his siblings, especially in terms of appearance and attractiveness.
As established in the previous two books, the Reeves have set up their lives in their corner of Cornwall in a way that is very isolated, to protect their secrets from the locals. But this has caused curiosity, speculation, and gossip. So they had decided to open their home up a small degree and have a dinner party with some of the locals. Some of the events of this story overlap the previous books, as this dinner party first occured in Book 1, but recurs here, but now from the perspective of Horis, and a local young woman, Verity Drake, a local woman who is part of the local community, and most curious about the mysterious Reeves. Verity because of her own family and personal circumstances, does understand the dangers of unchecked and malicious gossip. However, inspite of this, she has a strong desire to uncover other's secrets, and finds the opportunity to snoop too tempting when at the Reeves. When she does so, she witnesses Horis utilizing technology she cannot fathom.
This puts her and Horis directly at odds with each other with the normally peaceful and quiet Horis actively seeking out Verity to exert his dominance, despite no evidence of her spreading any gossip about his family. They are like two poles of a magnet - unable to stay away from each other, despite being in opposition.
But surprising circumstances force them to form an unexpected alliance, one that is beneficial to both Verity and his family, and Verity and Horis find themselves working closely together to protect what is theirs, and giving into the spark of attraction that was always there behind the walls of hostility that existed before.
Spicy and fascinating in the blend of the alien Reeves with their advanced technology and knowledge and how it fits in the Regency world, especially with their growing relationships and ties to people in that world. At first, I was not very engaged in the hostile relationship that existed between Horis and Verity. It felt a bit flat with nowhere to go. But then the twist that forced them to work so closely and quickly develop intimacy and family ties pulled me into their story and their developing relationship. This has the added spice of a developing fracture in the Reeve's family as well and I am eager to see how that plays out.
I also loved the relationship Horis has with his dog as well, and how she is engaged in the story.
A Not So Convenient Marriage is the third installment in The Reeves of Reeves Hall, a Regency romance series woven with mystery and subtle science-fiction elements. While it can be read as a standalone, I quickly realized the emotional resonance would have been even greater had I started with the earlier books in the series.
At first, I wasn’t sure if the blend of Regency romance and science fiction would work for me. I enjoy speculative elements occasionally, but I was hesitant. I’m glad I kept reading, because this turned out to be a thoroughly engaging story.
This is a novel about secrets—and the lengths people will go to protect them. Verity Drake is perceptive, curious, and determined, with a keen sense that something is unusual about the reclusive Reeves family. Where did they come from, and why do they avoid society? Her questions set the story in motion.
When Verity witnesses something she was never meant to see, Harry Reeves steps in, warning her to keep silent and mind her own business. Protective, infuriating, and far too perceptive himself, Harry becomes both her adversary and her fascination. Their interactions spark a battle of wills layered with tension, curiosity, and undeniable attraction.
The push-and-pull between Harry and Verity is both entertaining and heartfelt. Despite their efforts to keep their distance, a scandal forces them into a marriage of necessity. What begins as an inconvenient arrangement soon deepens into something far more meaningful, as simmering tension turns into passion and ultimately, love. Yet Harry’s secrets are not his alone—and when the truth comes to light, both must face the question of how much love and loyalty can endure.
The story delivers several unexpected twists. Harry’s devotion to his family and the lengths he’ll go to protect them add emotional weight, especially as the tension between marital trust and sibling loyalty rises to the surface. The book leaves readers pondering: which bond is stronger, family by blood or the love forged in marriage?
I was particularly impressed with how seamlessly the author wove the science-fiction components into a Regency setting without ever losing the heart of the romance or the believability of the plot. Harry and Verity are written with emotional depth, their internal struggles and growing connection beautifully portrayed.
By the end, I was fully invested—not just in their love story, but in the fate of the entire Reeves family. A Not So Convenient Marriage is a unique, heartfelt, and suspenseful addition to a series I now look forward to reading in full.
I received an ARC (advanced review copy) for free and am sharing my thoughts voluntarily.
Well written, full of drama, scandal, secrets, emotions, society, twists, rumors, intrigue and a marriage of convenience. This story picks up from the other two books in this series. Verity is from the village and hears some very strange things that happen at the Reeves Manor. Verity sees Harry doing some strange things while there and confronts him. Verity and Harry have a tug of war between themselves and after a time they are both forced to marry . A marriage of convenience so that they are able to keep the secrets of the Reeves family. The characters are all complex and multidimensional offering the readers a very fabulous read. Would recommend to everyone this story and the rest of the series. I recieved this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
