Hide and Seek: A Dark Stalker Romance

Rate this book
When darkness wants to claim you, do you run or do you step into the light, daring it to catch you?
Forensic Pathologist, Harper-Rayn, is no stranger to darkness. She has seen it all in the cold silence of Blackstone’s one and only morgue, revealing the mystery of death on her autopsy table—until the bodies start speaking to her in eerie, calculated ways.

When corpses begin to reveal chilling, hidden messages meant only for her, she realizes she’s been playing a twisted game she never intended to play. The game intrigues her, drawing her in, but if she takes one wrong step, it’s game over.

The line between fear and obsession wavers, shifting this game from one of desire into a terrifying, murderous lust, the strings being pulled by a cryptic masked killer with one unforgiving intention—to claim her as his own, dead or alive.

The shadows are real. The fear is crippling. But the lust is wild and ferocious.

Fear sends her spiraling into the arms of the delicious SWAT team leader, Knight Slater. He’s everything she’s ever desired, but everything she shouldn’t want. He’s more than off limits. He’s her step-uncle, but she draws him in, and protecting her becomes more than just duty. It becomes a relentless need.

As this deadly game tightens around them, Harper must decide: Is she ready to risk it all for her heart and put everything on the line, or will she literally die trying?

The HIDE AND SEEK Duet is a pitch-black stalker romance and is suitable for mature readers.

And this, friends, is why you don't buy a book just because it has sprayed edges and it looks pretty. Might wanna read the first chapter at least, before you spend your hard earned money on stupid shit.

After reading 20% of this and frankly losing brain cells by the second, I decided I just have to put it down, for good, and burn it potentially. I don't even care, it's so low effort, poorly executed everywhere.
Basically we have our FMC Harper-Rayn (not even Ryan see what was done there), yes she's special like that with 2 names in chapter title AND whenever somebody calls her name, always make sure it's both names. I might be too european for this. She's a forensic pathologist, which was such a cool idea to be buried - wink - so deep in the ground of the most basic, cringey and sex crazed teenager type of FMC's you will ever probably read. And we have examples such as:

"If he needs to get that elephant trunk wet, he'll be sure to let me know in the loudest way possible."

"Though had Laith shown his stupidly gorgeous face, I can assure you, the cum guzzling would certainly not be at an all time low."

Either way that's not necessarily the biggest issue, but everyone else seems to be the same. Her bestfriend Izzy, who's also just a sex maniac that wants to know who she's fucking and when she's fucking, and also wanting to fuck her step dad, just like that. She's so horny for the FMC's stepdad that's her entire character development.

The story from my understanding so far is not even about a stalker, although she claims to have one, but about Knight. Yes, he's not an actual knight, that's his dumb name. I sense either a huge ironic move by the author to name the FMC that way and the MMC to make this an entire comical experience, but it didn't make me laugh one moment.
Knight is also a SWAT guy, but we only believe it I suppose because it's mentioned, a million times. And that's that. He's also her step uncle. And old. Did I mention he's old? It's never mentioned how old he is - at least up to the point I stopped reading - so I'm sorry but he's a relic to me. He also seems to love cursing like EVERY 5 FUCKING WORDS. He's so annoying.

He's also strangely IN LOVE for years with this woman, she's 28 - not acting her age obviously - and assuming he was in love with her since she was 20, is relatively fine but he ONLY WANTS TO GET IT ON AND FAST. When she clearly states that she feels in danger from the stalker and wants some protection. As such he can't help himself just jack off when she's in his house, supposed scared. But don't worry she also couldn't sleep because she wants him to use her like a fleshlight. My fucking god.

20% is also where we start getting the SMUT and no thank you, I know nothing of these characters, nothing makes sense up to this point but since both characters (and side ones apparently) are so down bad to get it on, I'm also down bad to get the fuck out and leave yalls to your business.

°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*HIDE AND SEEK °❀⋆.ೃ࿔* Is the first full length pitch black stalker romance in the (Hide & Seek) duet by author Sheridan Anne. Spoken in dual pov’s. The story follows Harper-Rayn & Knight

Did someone say ↠ Pitch - black stalker romance !?! ← Seeing that tagline and the author there was no way I wasn't going to sign up..

WTF 🤬 did I just read!?! 0800therapy!!

God where to even start! This is going to be one of the hardest reviews I’ve ever had to write up. This gave me whiplash, I never knew what was going to happen next, a few times I thought I’d guessed who it was only to be blindsided. Twists and turns which moved faster than any roller coaster I’ve ever come across. Had me reeling in its wake.

Harper-Rayn is in her element, in a job she loves, working towards becoming a forensic pathologist whilst completing her residency at Blackstone Private Hospital. Cutting to the chase, she performs autopsies for a living. With a huge amount of crime at Blackstone there's always an abundance of the dead to work on..She prefers to work the midnight shift, the music cranked up, getting into her zone. Until one night as she's writing up a report a prickly crawly feeling overcame her, chills down the spine where she felt like she was being watched. Then the bodies started turning up with cryptic messages carved into their bodies which she had to decipher.

Now onto Knight..Harper's step-uncle. He's top of his field as a Swat officer in the country. He's always been attracted to Harper but has never stepped over the line of no return. Until she rings him in a panic and he becomes entangled within her web, as he strives to protect her from a stalker the lines become blurred between them.

'𝚂𝚑𝚎'𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚋𝚒𝚍𝚍𝚎𝚗 𝚏𝚛𝚞𝚒𝚝, 𝚍𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚋𝚎𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚎 𝚖𝚎, 𝚍𝚊𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚖𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚊 𝚋𝚒𝚝𝚎.  𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙸'𝚖 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚅𝚒𝚙𝚎𝚛 🐍 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚐𝚊𝚛𝚍𝚎𝚗, 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚢 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚞𝚛𝚗 𝚒𝚝 𝚊𝚕𝚕 𝚝𝚘 𝚑𝚎𝚕𝚕.'

This book had me flabbergasted, I never knew what was going to come at me next. Throughout I kept repeating god when is she going to catch a break, all for it to come tumbling down in a clusrerf#ck of a twist. And just when I think all is right in this world, I’m thrown over a cliffy. I had it in the back of my mind one would appear being that it’s a duet, but to this extent, that ending was a doozy!

I’ve probably encountered my fair share of dark books along my journey of reading, so for me I’m pretty much desensitised, this for me had some pretty disturbing gritty parts but not pitch black, but for others check those triggers.

Only an author can come up with a storyline like this! Oh and the character art thrown haphazardly throughout this book was truly stunning and made for such a pleasurable reading experience.. loved, loved, loved it… 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

5⭐️ This was such a wild ride. This is giving allll the dark romance vibes I love but with like a thriller twist and I’m OBSESSED. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in book two. Knight is top book boyfriend material. This honestly has me on my edge of my seat the entire time and did mention the spice was spicinnnn. Ugh loved this.

this book didn't make any sense from the start, I dont know if it was intentionally written this way. nothing made sence.
a forensic pathologist falls for a swat team leader who is her step uncle. dead bodies turn up at the morgue she thinks it's related to her stalker.
so many unexplained things happen and not once was reported to the hospital or police just swept under the carpet as if that wasn't an option. so many questions left unanswered and nothing adds up.
was there childhood abuse? why is the mother daughter relationship like it is?
what is wrong with the billionaire step dad?
you do an autopsy report with red flag everywhere and noone questions it.
had to struggle to get through this as it didn't make any sense

What in the what did I just read???

I was looking down at my percentage bar nearing the end thinking, this still doesn't feel right and then Sheridan gives me a whiplash ending! Probably one of the biggest shocks I've read this year. This book has plot, spice, twists, a sassy FMC and an MMC we will all drool over.

What I love about Sheridan Anne books is that she always keeps me guessing. She sets her books up to have multiple suspects and while you read, you are trying your hardest to figure out who the culprit is. I thought I had the book figured out and then I was blindsided.

I still don't know how to feel or what I believe. This book is one big cluster F*** but also good at the same time. Let me start by saying I was annoyed and angry almost the whole time reading. I was fully prepared to write a review about how messy Harper is and how the book does not follow investigation logic. Hear me now when I say, you have to FINISH this book no matter what your opinion of it is because your opinion is wrong. This is not a book you can DNF because you truly don't understand what is happening.

I still have my theories, and I am sticking to them until the next book. All I can say is expect the unexpected and everything you think you know is probably incorrect. Once I get over my shock from this ending, I will be patiently waiting for the second book of this duet.

Okay sooo overall it was a mixed experience. The first 20% had me hooked with the thriller vibe, but then it dragged and I almost put it down. But I stuck with it, and from about 70% onwards it picked up again and I actually enjoyed the ride to the finish.

Im in the minority here but this was everything I didnt want from a stalker romance. Im not sure how everyone is just down with the FMC dropping her panties for this masked man with absolutely NO lead up between them. No communication, no tension building, nothing. The rest of the story was fine? But the whole stalker story line was bizarre.

‘She’s the forbidden fruit, dangling before me, daring me to take a bite, and I’m the fucking viper in the garden, ready to burn it all to hell.’

okay that plot twist?? 😳 i really thought i had it all figured out and i was so wrong. 🫢 the suspense and twists kept me hooked the whole time, and the forbidden romance between her and knight…i loved it 😌😌🤭🤭 i really felt for harper though, she went through so much. 😫 i admired how strong and confident she was even when she kept getting knocked down. 🫶 knight?? tall, hot, tattooed swat team leader?? yes please. 🙂‍↕️ i loved knight but laith was easily my favourite character, he was so funny and had the best vibe. i really hope he’s in the next book!! 😊

‘Harper-Rayn Madden is fucking end game for me, and I don’t give a shit what she has to say about it.’

‘He’s playing a twisted game of hide and seek, and when he finds me, he’ll have me anyway he wants. And if I deny him, if I run or scream . . . It’s game over.’

Honestly terrible.

The writing style was simplistic and boring, and the entire book felt like poorly written, over-the-top smut disguised as a “dark romance.” There are 3–4 different men orbiting the FMC: one turns out to be imaginary, one is *related to her* (why??), and another is supposedly extremely important but barely matters until the very end. None of these dynamics were handled well or with any depth.

The “twist” was painfully predictable and executed badly. Knight’s character carried the book as much as possible, but even then he’s just the same broody, older, muscular man we’ve seen a hundred times in this genre. Harper, on the other hand, is incredibly bland—surface-level, one-note, and defined almost entirely by obsession with sex. There’s no real character development to latch onto.

It took me *two weeks* to finish because I kept wanting to DNF. After all the buildup of this supposed mystery, she ends up in a psych ward where absolutely nothing happens; she’s immediately told the truth, then suddenly she’s out. The last few chapters are just repetitive scenes with Knight, which felt pointless and rushed.

Overall, this book had nothing meaningful to say, no satisfying payoff, and no originality. A completely pointless read, and I will not be picking up the sequel.

Poor execution in book form 🙄

It was a real effort to get to the end of this book. To be completely honest, if I hadn’t been reading this for book club there’s a very good chance it would’ve been a DNF 🤷🏼‍♀️

Every single character is irritating…potentially with the exception of Laith, but only maybe and that is probably because he’s not actually present in 90% of the book.

I’m not sure the author has ever interacted with another human in real life, like who are these people she’s conjured up in her brain and why are they all caricatures of real people? They’re so over the top with everything and it’s just not realistic at all. And that’s without even getting started on the FMC and her actions throughout the whole book. Who gets a murderous stalker and within LITERAL SECONDS of him getting hold of her, decides that she’s cool with him just doing whatever he wants to her? Absolutely crazy behaviour…which I suppose tells us what we need to know about her but 🤷🏼‍♀️

Without getting into the minutiae of everything I didn’t like about this book, I think it boils down to a pretty good premise ruined by poor writing. Not to mention the fact that her mental issues still feel pretty unresolved by the end of the book. Hallucinating a stalker? Okay cool 🙄 Imagining people she knows/has met turning up in the morgue? Yeah fine 🤷🏼‍♀️ Full mental breakdown resolved in a matter of a couple of weeks with some nice tablets and a few therapy sessions with no real explanation of what caused the psychotic break or how she’s moving forward? Yeah no, I’m not sure that feels like a closure of a book to me. It feels like the author loved the idea of having a mental health storyline without the knowledge and research to back it up so just copped out at the end with her version of a happily ever after. 🫠

Do I want answers? Yes.
Do I want to read the second book? Not really, no.

Loved the mystery surrounding this book the entire way through. The spice wasn't so bad either.

I really liked the FMC of Harper-Rayne. I loved that she was a little grungey/gothy and worked in a morgue...night shift no less! She was funny and outspoken. The banter back and forth between her and Laith, her friend and on again off again flavor of the week *wink* was hilarious! But her BFF of Izzy was my favorite character! Everyone needs that best friend who will tell you like it is and have your back no matter what!

Uncle Knight was a great match for our FMC. He was just that perfect mix of sugar and spice that she needed. He helped ground her and always told the truth whether she liked it or not.

This book had an age gap, Step Uncle, Mystery and lots of spice!

Need the next one after that cliffhanger ending!

Loved this!

I couldn’t put this one down. The mystery had me completely hooked, and I loved trying to piece everything together alongside Harper-Rayn. Knight was protective, possessive, and exactly the kind of MMC I love. The chemistry between them was intense, the suspense kept me guessing, and the atmosphere made it impossible to stop reading. And that ending… I was not prepared for that cliffhanger! I need the next book ASAP. If you love dark romance with an addictive mystery, forbidden tension, and plenty of spice, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

Sheridan Anne didn’t get the title queen of cliffhangers for nothing and this one is absolutely EPIC. One of my favorite reads from her yet. It’s suspenseful, packed with twists you never see coming, and that ending? Jaw on the floor, breath stolen, flipping pages like this can’t be it?! But yep… book two is coming, and I’m praying the wait isn’t long.

The forbidden vibe, the age gap, the off-the-charts chemistry … SO good. These two are pure heat. And the dynamic? A forensic pathologist and a SWAT Team leader with explosive tension for days. I devoured it.

Okay… wtf was that? 😅

We don’t meet Knight for a hot minute. Then he shows up and Harper is all “that’s my step-uncle, ew”. Then Knight’s POV is all “thats my niece.. ew.” Two pages later Knight is all “get on your knees” and she’s all “okay daddy”.

Then there’s a stalker. Then the stalker is in her head. Then it goes from hot sex to her in a psych ward? Then the stalker comes back and the end.

No please.

Need a good book to recover from this one.

2 Stars ~

I was enjoying this up until the author used (my newest) most hated trope for the ending of a mystery, the FMC doesn’t actually have a crazed stalker, she is just crazy herself and none of it was real.

No thanks, don’t you think the narrative that women are crazy is already too saturated in real life narrative that it doesn’t need to be in books too?

Also, first event of acute psychosis is just magically cured with medication and therapy in 72hours and she is good to go back to work as a fucking forensic psychologist after 3 weeks? SURE.

This one had me hooked almost immediately.

Harper Rayn is a forensic pathology resident who prefers the night shift, until the bodies on her table start leaving messages meant only for her. From there, the story becomes a dark game of obsession, secrets, and psychological suspense that kept me questioning what was real right alongside her.

The audiobook was excellent. Sebastian York and Heather Firth deliver a duet narration that really sells the tension. Sebastian York absolutely nails Knight, bringing just the right mix of protective, possessive, and forbidden. Heather Firth captures Harper's fear, resilience, and growing obsession without making her feel flat.

If you enjoy morally gray characters, a masked stalker, forbidden romance, and plenty of twists, this delivers. Just know it ends on a cliffhanger that practically shoves you into Book 2.

If you're looking for a light romance, this isn't it. It's dark, unsettling, and full of psychological games. If that's your thing, you'll probably fly through this one.

✎𓂃♥︎ Okay…this book ALMOST received a two-star rating. The story was indeed all over the place and I felt as if I was going crazy trying to keep up with what was happening. The book felt more like a why-choose rom than what I was expecting so that shock was a plot-twist.

However…that ending was 100% worth it. With the duet now released I can dive into that one and truly see if the reviews back up the claim to just keep pushing through for more information.

Also, the spicy scenes in this book were INTENSE. 🔥

Daaaaaamn Sheridan Anne!!
What a spicy-AF-pitch-black-dark-romance you’ve created. I’m reeling! The dirty mouthed step-uncle SWAT Officer, Knight, can ask me to do anything anytime!! This book had suspense + twists & turns that I did NOT expect. I thought I had who the masked stalker was pinned early on, but turns out, I was so. very. wrong!!!

Be sure to check the triggers list as it’s a long one.

But all I can say is I am RUNNING to read book #2….. Ready or Not, here I come 😉
