He bought her at an auction.
Offered marriage like a business deal.
Promised no feelings.

And I thought: "oh, this is about to spiral beautifully".
Reader, it did not spiral. It…flatlined.

Let’s discuss.

What worked for me
(aka: why I was sat and paying attention)

The premise had me from the jump.

Marriage of convenience, billionaire with control issues and a desperate heroine choosing survival over love? Say less. This setup had me SAT. The auction scene alone was an immediate hook - I was ready for chaos, obsession and a man losing his mind in real time.

Elodie kept this grounded.

She wasn’t naive about the situation. She understood the power imbalance, the emotional cost and still made a calculated decision based on survival.

Not romantic. Not dreamy. Just real.
And I respect that.

She had boundaries, asked the right questions and actually thought things through before signing her life away - which in this genre, deserves applause.

The early tension was doing its job.

The contract negotiations?
The “no feelings” rules?
The quiet moments where you KNOW it’s not going to stay business?
That’s my catnip. I was fully locked in waiting for the inevitable breakdown of control.

Side characters understood the assignment.

They added just enough life and movement when the main dynamic started to stall. Lowkey carried parts of the back half for me.

Where it lost me
(aka: where it said "never mind")

Cold, distant…and going nowhere

I don’t mind emotional unavailability.
I mind when it never evolves into anything else.

But Dorian stayed in his cold, controlled, emotionally constipated era for WAY too long. We get insight into his feelings through his POV…but his actions never match.

At some point, that’s not tension anymore. That’s just frustrating.

The “I’ll pretend to have an affair” nonsense

Sir.

You’re telling me the man who: bought her, married her, clearly thinks about her constantly…decides the best way to maintain “boundaries” is to let her believe he’s sleeping with someone else??

TWICE???

That’s not angst. That’s self-sabotage with zero emotional payoff.

I needed consequences. I needed grovelling. I needed SOMETHING.

We got vibes. Just vibes.

Where was the spiral???

This is my main issue. The book promised possessiveness, jealousy, loss of control.

What we got was brief flashes of mild irritation and a delayed reaction when she goes to dinner with Parker. Then suddenly he’s like “wait… I care!"???

Sir. It took you THIS long???

I was waiting for unhinged.
I got… the bare minimum.

The final stretch dragged

Around the 60% mark, I felt the shift. The momentum dropped, the tension plateaued and instead of escalating, the story just…hovered.

I wasn’t locked in anymore.
I was waiting for something to happen that never quite hit.

Final Thoughts

This had all the ingredients for a top-tier marriage of convenience romance...and for a while, it delivered.

But the emotional payoff just wasn’t there.
Dorian had all the potential to be that man, the one who spirals, loses control, becomes unreasonably possessive in the most satisfying way.

Instead, he stayed controlled for too long...and when he finally cracked, it felt rushed and underwhelming.

Elodie deserved better.
And honestly? So did I.

Final Verdict

Great setup. Strong heroine. Weak follow-through.

2.5 ⭐️ - Came for the spiral…stayed for the potential…left mildly annoyed.

Tropes and Vibes:
• marriage of convenience
• billionaire MMC (control issues, emotionally unavailable)
• “no feelings, just business” (liar energy)
• forced proximity
• power imbalance
• protective moments (blink and you’ll miss them)
• jealousy (delayed, undercooked)
• “who hurt you” moment
• survival over romance FMC
• corporate legacy stakes
• missed unhinged spiral potential

This book reminds me why I love reading books from this writer. I couldn't stop reading, because I needed to know how the story would go further.

Elodie is so sweet and she is so trusting people, which got her in deep trouble, life threatening trouble. Her brother can't help her, but she runs in to her brothers former best friend Dorian. Her old crush and he wanted to walk away from her, but he can't resist helping her.
And it seems she can help him with a the thing is father demand from him. The steam is coming from the pages.

Dorian wants to keep it like business, but with how he is acting I was waiting for him to break and go for it. The moment he does break, wow!
The holiday and the confessions which follow are making this story even deeper, which I like.

Another thing I like is seeing some familiar faces and I like I was right about who one of the moles was.

This is the second book in the Vale Billionaire series. In Temporary Vows, Elodie Harper is a sweet woman who is struggling with money problems. She is a high school teacher but is also working at a coffee house. She has sadly ended up in a very complicated situation. She trusted the wrong person and is now stuck paying off a debt to a loan shark that isn’t even hers. The deadline is approaching soon. She is becoming hopeless and is running out of options. She makes a decision out of desperation and puts herself on an auction to make as much money as she can in one night. The man who buys her is none other than billionaire Dorian Vale. He is her crush and her brother’s former best friend. Dorian blindsides her by telling her if she marries him, her debt will be wiped clean. She will never have to worry about money.

Dorian Vale is the billionaire playboy. He is ruthless, cold, and does not form any type of attachments. Unfortunately he has been caught up in a scandal and it’s not only hurting his reputation, it’s hurting his family’s company. His father is tired of his reckless ways so he gives him an ultimatum. If he wants to keep being part of the company, he needs to find a wife. With a clean image, the scandal would go away. Dorian doesn’t want a wife, but he wants to remain in the company. When he sees Elodie at the auction, he is furious. He hasn’t talked to her ever since his best friend betrayed him. He knows she’s in trouble and offers to help. He tells her he will help her if she marries him, but their marriage will only be on paper. Everything else will be for show to clean up his image. He can’t deny what he feels and he tries to keep her at arms length. How long will he be able to avoid her?

Faith Summers had me yelling at my kindle. I felt so bad for Elodie. It seems like she can’t catch a break. First she is stuck with a debt that isn’t hers. Then when it is solved, she is stuck in a marriage that might not have a future. I also felt bad for Dorian. You can tell he wants her but he does not want to get close. He has been betrayed before and does not want to go through that again. At times I hated Dorian and other times I was completely in love with him. Their chemistry was intense though. The push and pull, their stares, and their arguments led to some passionate scenes. I was rooting for them since the beginning. This was definitely an emotional roller coaster. It is filled with drama, heat, secrets, humor, and heartbreaking twists.

I don’t know what happened, but all my highlights for just this book disappeared in my Kindle app 😑

💗Elodie & Dorian💗

𝑩𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒅, 𝑳𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒎𝒃, 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆.

You can always trust your best friend, right? Unfortunately, this was not the case for Elodie. She believed her friend would make payments on a large loan, but after the first payment, her friend bailed, leaving Elodie in a mountain of debt to a dangerous loan shark.

💗He calls her Little Lamb

💗Pays 60k at an auction for her and only asked for a kiss

💗Can’t stop thinking about her

💗Beats the loan shark guy with an inch of his life for attacking Elodie.

Dorian used to be best friends with Elodie's older brother, Jack, but they had fallen out and haven't spoken in years. Now, Dorian needs to clean up his image and divert attention from a scandal. At his father's request, Dorian must find a wife if he wants to become COO of Vale Global, his family's multi-billion dollar company.

He realizes Elodie is in serious trouble when he first sees her waiting tables, and he sees her auctioning herself off at The Dark Odyssey, and then she shows up at his office bruised and beaten.

He offers to wipe her debt clean if she agrees to marry him and give him a child. The only catch is that their marriage will be in name only, and they are allowed to discreetly see other people (though neither actually does).

With no one else to turn to, Elodie agrees to his terms and becomes his wife. She is supposed to be off-limits, but neither of them can deny the growing tension between them.

I wanted to JUNK PUNCH her brother; he was such a shady, horrible brother, and I’m glad he got what he deserved. It should have been more time.

I am really enjoying this series so far; book one is my favorite. This one was a little slow and dragged at times, but it was still a good read overall. I can’t wait to read Levi and Piper’s story!

Temporary Vows is the second story in the Vale Billionaires series. It is a very suspenseful story.

Elodie is a teacher working a second job at a coffee shop. She is trying to pay off a debt that is not hers to pay. She trusted someone who let her down. Now she has to pay the loan shark back. She is desperate and trying to figure out how to get the money on time. Elodie makes a decision that will change her life. She decides to go to an auction. She can make all the money she can get in one night. She is surprised when Dorian buys her. She has crushed on him for years and is her brother's former best friend. Dorian makes her a deal. If she marries him her debt will be gone.

Dorian is a playboy and a billionaire. He has been involved in a scandal that has put him in a terrible position with his family's company. His father tells him that he has to get married if he wants to keep being a part of the company. When he finds Elodie he feels this is the answer to his problem. He will marry her on paper only. Elodie agrees to marry him to get rid of the debt. What happens when they start to feel things for each other?

I loved Elodie's character. She was such a good person and unfortunately got in a bad situation with trying to help someone. I loved how good Dorian was for her and the connection they had. I look forward to more in the future.

Temporary Vows is a steamy Contemporary Billionaire romance that finds its FMC Elodie in deep trouble after signing as a guaranteer for a friends loan which wasn’t through a bank, and that friend has disappeared leaving Elodie to deal with it.
What was she going to do?
MMC Dorian Vale has a problem besides having a waitress, the sister of his former old friend as it turned out spilling coffee all over him as he was exiting a coffee house.
His father is pushing him to marry and quickly because of the bad press Dorian’s been getting over an affair.
Then Elodie accidentally hears a conversation about an auction taking place at a sex club, The Dark Odyssey for big money and she is going to go for it.
Dorian happens to be at the club that night and sixty thousand later Elodie is his!
Fate has finally decided these two are meant to be together and their story becomes intense, with family dynamics, danger, surprises, and a marriage that will make all her debts disappear.
Nicely written, with well crafted characters, this dark romance was an entertaining, immersive read, and when they got over those speed bumps delivered a wonderful HEA.

Story: 4.5/5
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶/5
Hea: Yes
Dual POV
This story follows another Vale brother which is Dorian. He is closed off, alpha male, who doesn't share his feelings with anyone other than sometimes with his brothers bcs her asshole mother did a number on him(trigger warning----> she abused him and try to drown him). He was best friend with the FMC brother Jack but now they are ex-best friend, why? read the book.
The FMC Elodie is Jack's sister and the sweetest person who has been in difficult situation after her bitch of a friend put her into a situation that now she needs to pay back the hefty loan her friend has taken to the shark loans. Here comes the MC to help her and in return she has to marry him. Because his father demanded Dorian that if he wants to the position of COO to be permanent he needs to get married. So he makes a deal with Elodie...
What happens next, will this story be changed into a real love story for them? Or will this marriage of convenience will remain contract marriage forever??

You need to read the story for that and prepare yourselves with an epic twist,

Faith Summers never disappoints with her books. I’ve read practically all of her books and have enjoyed them all.
Elodie was the sweetest and she had such a huge heart. Dorian had me wanting to yell at him many times. I felt bad for Elodie and how he was treating her. It all made kind of sense in the end, but it was still frustrating.
One thing I did really love was how even though Dorian tried keeping her at arms length and kept telling himself their marriage was just one of convenience, he still only had eyes for Elodie. He was committed to her and faithful. That was nice to see. Anymore I don’t like the whole other woman and unnecessary drama. I love a stubborn asshole who is a complete dick, but I can do without the ow drama thrown in.
This was another really good read from Faith and I can’t wait for the next Vale brothers book- Levi and Piper’s story next in Wicked Dares!

This is the second book in the Vale Billionaires series & it can be read as a standalone. Dorian was friends with Elodie’s brother Jack—until they weren’t. Meeting years later, down & out Elodie is sweet, trusting, naive and this gets her into trouble—the kind of trouble only Dorian Vale could get her out of. Given her history of making terrible choices of who to trust, I wasn’t sure Dorian was going to be the man that would break that streak. It’s a slow burn, marriage of convenience, billionaire sabatoge story with some twists & reveals at the end. Dorian was not as unhinged as he was made out to be but he was certainly protective of Elodie. Loved seeing the brothers together & enjoyed their banter around “finding Dorian a wife”. I want to see these two in future books and get glimpses into their relationship.

One of my pet hates, in a billionaire romance where as soon as the FMC falls in love with the MMC, she becomes a doormat. That never happens to the MMC as they are all predictable alpha males.
Yes, in this story Dorian is the alpha male, but I was so happy to see that Elodie did not become a doormat. In fact Dorian became less insistent and domineering, the stronger Elodie became. They have a great relationship and history that make this book more enjoyable.
I love the Vale family dynamics between the brothers. The convos sound like normal sibling bickering, which made the brothers more reachable and attainable.
This book is a great read that is absorbing, with likeable and vibrant characters.

A great read that was hard to put down

Dorian and Elodie’s story was addictive. By that I mean I didn’t want to put it down.
Childhood friends lose contact (due to her brothers actions). Elodie is in great danger from a loan shark and makes a difficult decision, Dorian does NOT approve and protects her.
I need to be careful here so as not to leave spoilers.
A marriage, lots of emotional pain as well as a creepy cousin of Dorian make for stressful times
Dorian comes actress as hard and uncaring. Elodie fluctuates between being a strong woman one minute and a rather insecure one at other times.
Story includes grovelling, protection and love
No cliffhanger here

Loved this story the Dorian is in need to save his position in the family business. Elodie is his best friend’s little sister, a friend he disowned long ago. I love how Faith Summers develops the characters, the betrayal they both feel for each other and then the attraction they can’t deny. A captivating story with Dorian running from hisself, his feelings the monster he is, and Elodie trying to avoid getting hurt and falling for him, her childhood crush. Book 2 in the Vale Billionaire series is Temporary Vows and it's Dorian Vale and Elodie Harper's story. Her brothers former best friend offers to help her out of a situation if she'll help him with his. This is a fast-paced, intense story and had me feeling all sorts of things. And yes, screaming and yelling was involved. This story evokes emotions in the greatest of ways and if you're a reader who enjoys all the feels with the characters, this is for you!

Another fun read by Faith Summers. This one is about the second eldest brother. This story is a little different since Dorian is more cold and closed off due to childhood trauma Eliode has her own trauma which makes their connection worth while. They know eachother since childhood but went separate ways due to family drama. I felt bad for Eliode and the issue with her brother. I was hoping for more future timeline about that situation.

It was a really good story of Elodie, in a desperate move, agrees to marry Dorian, her older brother's former best friend. The marriage was suppose to be a contract but they had secretly been eyeing each other growing up. I'm glad a good amount of the story focuses on their relationship. The plot was good and some really good twists were thrown in. I can't wait for the next brother, Levi's book.

Dorian and Elodie
What to say about this book? This book was interesting from the first page to the last! You know that feeling when you’re reading a book but your imagination has you in the book with the characters? Yeah, that one, that feeling. And I loved how the book built on the drama…and the brother was a surprise.

This is the first time I’ve read this author, and omg, I’ll be running to read the rest. This was so good. I absolutely loved Dorian and Elodie. When he bought her on the auction block, giving her a proposal that would save them both, I swooned. It was the perfect arrangement. No expectations except be his wife. Nothing else. But as they got closer, their feelings started searching for one another. These two were everything. I devoured this. Couldn’t put it down.

It was supposed to be a business deal, but ended up anything but. Elodie is having money problems by trusting someone she ought not to. Dorian is Elodie's brother's former best friend. Dorian offers to help Elodie out with her problems as long as she helps to solve his.
The intensity between the two of them was what made this an amazing book. Drama and steam make a very interesting read.

The Beauty and the Beast. Innocent and naive Elody trusted the wrong person, left with no other option she makes a deal with the devil, but the man is more then the best he portray and his weakness is her. Wonderful characters, intense story line and a happily ever after at least for them, this story is fantastic. Can’t wait for the two younger brothers.

Dorian and Elodie’s story is an exciting and enjoyable read from the first page to the very last. The suspense and unexpected twists kept me on the edge of my seat. The chemistry between Dorian and Elodie was fire. I knew from the start who the true villain was but it was fun finding out the reasoning behind it. Highly recommend reading. Elodie and Dorian had me experiencing a wide variety of emotions and feels as their story played out. My heart simply broke for poor Elodie because boy, she couldn't catch a break.
