The Hysterics

Rate this book
Once upon a time, I was Fallon Dunbar. Rock and roll, drugs, and bad decisions were the life I lived. I’d fallen so deep into the dark rabbit hole that I was certain I would never make it out alive. People like me didn’t get second chances. People like me didn’t get lifted from the darkness. So when the opportunity showed up, I had to take it. I walked away from everything I loved, everything that was killing me, and I became Fae Dunham. After that, I hid behind makeup, long sleeves, and a closed-off heart. All was well until I met Dane Pearson. He wasn’t convinced of the new me, and whenever he was near, I felt like the old me, the real me, filled with passion and a love for music. Every day was a struggle of self-discovery. Every day was a fight to not fall back down the rabbit hole. And every day, somehow, someway, I slowly began to discover what it meant to find myself. It was a hysteric ride, but it was ours. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

DNF @27%

Despite the underdeveloped opening chapters that read more like a rough draft than a polished story, I trudged through, seeing potential in the characters until the premise took a complete nosedive a few chapters in. This is something that should be disclosed in the synopsis/blurb. Had I known ahead of time, I wouldn't have picked it up. I won't read about an h pregnant to someone else. Sorry, not sorry, it's totally unromantic!

So if this trope is also a turn-off for you, don't waste your time like I did, even if it was an Amazon freebie.

Edited to add: (skimmed a little ahead. New DNF point @39%. This bad writing just confirmed that DNFing was the right choice.)
So H accompanies h to doctor's appointment where he's about to see her naked for the first time. h says she didn't even think of that.

Hello? You're going to an ob/gyn because you're pregnant, of course you're going to get undressed.

Doctor turns out to also be a former rocker.

Bear in mind this is Chicago, not LA. Yet, the h (who's trying to escape the music scene) keeps running into all these musicians. This lead to a strange doctor-patient conversation which deals more with the latest in the music world than pregnancy. The "exam" is rushed and then suddenly there's no heartbeat. The h freaks out, "There's a dead baby inside me!"
To which the doctor, replies, "But your body is already starting to show signs of a miscarriage."

What symptoms? When? Two seconds ago it was happy congratulations. Now it's, 'here's a pamphlet on miscarriage and call me in the morning.' I shit you not! This dr. better go back to singing.

Additional Safety Notes: Some OW drama w/H's former fuck buddy, also a co-worker. Also, h's pregnancy was the result of a sex act while on drugs with her ex-boyfriend only a month prior. The scene is included as a flashback. I want to say that that scene is totally unnecessary, but yet prior to that the h, an utter moron, thinks she can't be pregnant because you have to have sex for that and then has a 'oh yeah, there was that night I let my cokehead ex tie me to the bed after I got jacked on Xanax, ecstasy, and tequila' moment.

***2,5 stars from me***

I usually love the books with musicians, but this one didn't get to me!!!
I don't know why that happened...

The storyline wasn't bad at all, but while i was reading it something bothered me!!!
The two main characters were very interesting, but i couldn't feel the connection between them...
And i felt that the things went too quick about those two...
Yeah, they were having a difficult background, but we took so much time of the book to see the way they end up together, that we didn't get to learn the important things back in their lives...
I feel unsatisfied and i'm still having a million questions about their past...

I think i needed more informations...

Fae used to be Fallon... Fallon used to be a popular drummer but after a wild life with drugs and sex that lead her to hospital she took the decision to change her life and with that she changed and her name...
Now, she was Fae a music magazine's editor and she was living a simple life away from everything she used to know...

Dane is a reporter in the same music magazine and in his free time he is the drummer of the band "The Hysterics". From the first moment, he is drown to Fae and soon enough he discovered her true identity... He had an ugly past himself and he is trying so hard to win Fallon's heart...

That sounds good, ugh??? I thought the same...
But i will tell for one more time that something was missing...
I wanted more informations about their past and i wanted the things between them to go more slow from the first moment that they got together... I think that after that moment they were running too fast!!!
Another one thing i didn't like is that since the book was having as a title the name of a band, i wanted more scenes with the band... There were but they were too small and too quickly, no important at all!!! :(((
I'm really sorry, but it didn't thrill me so much!!!!

My Thoughts - Story
I am a big fan of Ms. Mazzola after reading her Crashing Series and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to read this one…it seemed like it belonged on the other end of the spectrum with rockers, drugs and angst…but I gave it a try.  And, damn, I am so happy that I did.

This was different – it took the Rocker genre and switched it up – it was the girl who was a famous star…a famous drummer who turned to drugs and alcohol and mindless sex.  It was perfect how Ms. Mazzola twisted the plot to write a story about a girl who changed her life around and found love in the process.  And who does she find this love with?  Another rocker who is on the ladder to success.  He teaches her how to be in the spotlight again without giving her true self up.

This was a happy read compared to the heart wrenching stories of Ms. Mazzola’s books I have read prior. I enjoyed reading about the struggles Fallon faced and how she kept her strength to find love.

Re-Cap
Fallon was a popular punk drummer until one night when drugs almost took her life.  Well, the rest of the world thinks she is dead but instead out of the ashes, Fae emerges – no more bands, no more drums and no more drugs.  Then she meets Dane – the drummer for The Hysterics and he just won’t take NO for an answer. He wants Fae and there is nothing he won’t do to have her, but is he right for her or just another trigger for Fallon’s past?

RELEASE DATE: January 29th 2015
MY RATING: ★★★★

4 Romeo and Juliet the Duo Drummers Stars

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I really enjoyed this book, the slow build up of the characters which allowed for a broader connection, loved the fact it wasn't insta love, no whiny female (thank you god) and a story that you get lost in..

I was Fallon Dunbar, I was a drummer, I was confident, strong and driven, I was a junkie, I am dead

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This was my second chance, my fresh start, no one can know I am a drummer

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

DRUMMER BOY

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I love the dynamics between Fae and Dane, the flirting, the one liners..Loved how unique this story was..

In black ink my love may still shine bright

She was one of the most talented underground drummers I have ever heard of; she was supposed to be dead, an archangel her wings a little singed from the wreckage of her past.

BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN

Loving Mr Daniels The best things in life aren't easy, they are tough, they are painful, they are raw

TWO BROKEN SOULS

I loved Dane's character in this book

Let's get one thing straight, I'm a nice guy, but once we start, I'm rough and in charge and not nice

Dane ~ I had never felt so drawn to a woman before; I hated how vulnerable it made me and how mushy I got when it came to her.

I'd really love to read more of the other bandmembers!!

So I am a HUGE fan of Kristen Hope Mazzola now that I have read her Crashing Series...So when I saw that The Hysterics were getting their own book...I was freaking out! I am seriously!! I was stoked...AND NOW IT WENT LIVE last week and I spent the weekend neck deep in this amazing not-so-rocker-rock-star-romance and OMG it is just awesome!

I loved that it wasn't just about a rock star saving a person or falling in love with a waitress in a dive diner...this romance made sense...these characters were made for each other.

Dane and Fallon are perfect! Dane is the perfect Book Boyfriend for sure! More people need to fall in love with him! OMG he's amazing!

If you want a 5+ Star read, pick up The Hysterics. You can thank me later! Lol. You'll fall in love with Dane and Fallon, er... Fae. This book is raw, real and beautiful. Life is messy, but love doesn't always have to be. My favorite thing about The Hysterics is that the characters knew a good thing when they found it. I would absolutely recommend this one to anyone who loves good books, rock and roll, romance, and the chance to live (and love!) again.

New life brings joy!

Found a new author for me to enjoy but since I love a good rockstar romance, of course I had to read this one.

This was a different and interesting story of a broken woman who hit rock bottom and found it neccessary to change her name and who she was to survive. Finding a second chance, in a new city, with a new life since she had all but wasted the previous one. Surprised when an unexpected love comes along to shake up her world. Has she found her perfect soulmate? Will he still be around when he finds out how screwed up her life really was? Would anyone understand why she gave up her career as a well known drummer for anonymity?

Dane and Fallon's story was a sweet and sexy meeting of broken souls who were hoping that together they might find a way to mend their hearts.

They are so connected by their mutual love of writing, books and music and these things bring them together and become part of everything that is good and right in their world.

Sweet, sexy and easy to read, I whipped through this story in a few lovely hours today and enjoyed every single minute of my time with The Hysterics!

"Right then the world stopped around me. I was standing in front of Fallon Dunbar, the former drummer of Regicide Assisted, a band that had just broken up because rumor had it their drummer had died from an overdose of coke. She was a legend in the underground circuit, but she had flown in under my radar. I decided to not let Fae-Fallon- know I'd figured out her alter ego and went along with the sheer surprise of standing in the presence of this awesome chick..."

Fallon Dunbar isn't herself anymore. She lost her rising rock star identity when she nearly died of a drug overdose. Now she's Fae Dunham and starting her life over. As a favor to her family, Payton hires her at his music magazine, "Raging Underground." Being a musician is who she was, a drummer in a punk rock band, and now she's an assistant editor.

Moonlighting on the magazine is Dane Pearson, also a drummer. His band "The Hysterics" are doing well enough for themselves. Dane is drawn to Fae though. He knows a secret she's keeping. Not everything is out in the open though for either one of them. Still drawn to each other, can they make something out of what they have in their lives? Will Fae really turn her life into the new one she craved, or are old habits hard to break?

We meet the band consisting of Colt (lead guitar), Maverick (bass player), Rodney (front man). and then there is Dane. Bars and drinking, groupies and late nights. The life of a musician with a little romance is a great story line! Told from alternating points of view between Dane and Fae. It was impossible not to be drawn to these two. I hoped that somehow they could find a way to each other, complications and all.

Another great read by Kristen Hope Mazzolla. Once you start reading her work you'll be looking to see what else she has out there. I read her "Crashing Back Down" military romance series and loved that as well. Check my blog for other reviews by this author. I highly recommend her. Sometimes romance books get a bad name, too far fetched to be believed would be my usual take. The key with this author is you will believe everything she writes and that her characters exist. Well written, timely situations, people you would know in your own life. There is plenty to love about this author and her work.

Are Fae and Dane right for each other? Will outside influences ruin it all? Truth is probably the only thing that can save them. What happens if the world discovers that Fallon isn't dead after all? What if the secrets they try so hard to keep come spilling out? You'll have to read this one and find out!

Thank you Kristen Hope Mazzolla

**JODIE'S REVIEW**

"The best things in life aren’t easy. They are tough, they are painful, and they are raw.”

I went into this book expecting one thing and got something completely different. I was ready for the typical rock star romance. I expected the drama, the overtop personalities and the chemistry that flies off the paper. I am happy to say with that Kristen did not disappoint.

I struggled with the character that was Fallon / Fae. She was this rock star who faked her death to leave that life behind her yet she found herself right back in it. I gave her so much credit for trying to change and doing what she needed to do but I also couldn’t understand how she was still “in touch” with this past she was hiding from. I mean how can you be in hiding if everyone in your past literally knows where you are? But even with those questions I still found myself understanding her, the mistakes she made and the things she did I totally could see myself doing. SHE WAS REAL! Then came the drummer who stole another piece of my heart!! I honestly am starting to think I actually am not a rock star whore but a drummer one. I honestly haven’t met one yet that doesn’t make me melt into my kindle. Boys who beat on drums apparently make my heart also beat. Dane. Dane has this beyond traumatic past but yet he still is open to fight for love. He wasn’t afraid to make Fae see what they could be. He didn’t let her just walk away or shut him out. He pushed her. And believe me Fae really tries your nerves when it comes to them two. He was perfection and bottom line there is not one thing I can say that makes him have any flaws. I LOVE HIM!!

“You’re a damaged, erratic, closed off mess and I love every bit of you for it.”

In the end from someone who loves a good rock star this one is worth the read because it’s definitely different. I loved that Dane and Fae shared their love of the drums, they shared the love of the music and the performance. I loved that they had this undeniable connection but there are the little things that bugged me ** COUGH, COUGH ** Fae’s past, a certain part that took me outta the book and put me in man vs food, and I think I wanted more in certain places that I didn’t get. Overall though I have to go with the fact even with my problems I would say READ IT, I would still recommend it and I look forward to seeing more from Kristen!!

The Hysterics is an emotional rockstar romance about two people who both have dark and painful pasts. Even though they have extremely painful pasts, Dane and Fallon have two gigantic hearts and care deeply when they let people in. I loved this book and everything about Dane and Fallon. Their story is fun, passionate, and powerful.  I wasn't ready to tell these characters bye at the end of the story, but luckily they make appearances in some of Kristen Hope Mazzola's other works!

It was a refreshing change to come back to a genre that I read, but not regular as some were merging into one another with the hot sex etc.

This one was a pleasant surprise, yes it had hot sex in it, but it had a story first....

The stars of this show are Fallon and Dane.

Fallon appears one day being introduced as Danes boss/manager.
There was an instant HOT HOT HOT from Danes point of view.
She wasn't known as Fallon now, the rock star who played drums, that person was long gone thought to be dead from a drug overdose, but here she stands in front of Dane as Fae. Not for long though, as Dane puts two and two together, but he doesn't reveal his discovery to her though and keeps the secret. He wants her to tell him why.

This is the intriguing bit throughout the book.

My book buddy Philomena was texting me, I told her I was reading this story and I wanted to get to the bottom of this.

Its a while since I read a rock n roll novel, now and again one just blasts out at me and this one did.

Dane is the drummer who is a sex fiend but........not with Fallon [aka Fae] he respects her as she respects herself.

Its a love story like no other I have read recently and I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon reading it.

Its heart rending, breathtaking and full of emotional discoveries.

*My thanks to Kristen Hope Mazzola for allowing me to read and review her awesome work*

MY THOUGHTS~

I was provided with a Review Copy/ARC for review.

As usual, Author Kristen Hope Mazzola, blew me away with this book! The Hysterics is an awesome read. I couldn't put it down. It hooked from the start and never let go until the end. It even left me thinking about it after the last page. I love that in a book.

I absolutely LOVE books about music & romance. Granted, this is NOT your regular rock-star-meets-love-interest read. Nope. This story is incredibly original! Creating a truly unique and original "rock star" story line cannot be any easy feat with all the books of that kind out there today. KHM nailed it though!

The writing is superb as expected from this author and the characters are very well developed. In all honesty, I want more! Not sure if this planned to be a standalone or if maybe we'll get a spin-off. I so hope we get a spin-off or even a continuation of the main characters story.

Read this book! You won't regret it! Promise <3

I absolutely love this book! It's not your ordinary love story! There's rock and roll! There's sexy love scenes! There's secrets! Fae (or Fallon... Which ever you prefer lol) is crazy relatable! Underneath the tattoos and rock star past she's just a girl navigating through life and trying to figure out who she is. Dane is the swoon-worthy drummer with troubles in his past still haunting him. Two souls trying to rise above and live with love, passion, and rock and roll! The love story between them is great! They know from the start that they want to be together, no games. A guy who can admit he's whipped by a woman! Love it! Kristen Hope has an amazing way of telling a story that pulls you in! So well written and unique!

This book was amazing. It’s not your typical rockstar romance. For instance, the girl, Fallon, is the rockstar in this book, which I loved! Fallon or “Fae” is trying to get away from the rockstar life. Fae gets sucked back in when she starts to fall for Dane, who is trying to get in to the scene.

I’m not going to give any spoilers or reveal too much about this book because I think it’s the type of book you should read without knowing too much. It’s the kind of book that sucks you in, so is that much better without knowing anything.

You will definitely fall in love with the characters and you WILL becoming invested. It’s heart wrenching and beautiful. If you like books that make you feel, then you’re going to love The Hysterics.

Now, I’m off to buy more books by Miss Mazzola!

Huge fan of Kristen! I will preorder one click anything she writes! Fell in love with her writing in the crashing series...

Fae and Dane are so well written, their characters alone are trying to find their way in life but she gets a second chance in life, when Fae gives up who she was in her past is when their paths crossed and the chemistry was strong. Music was deep in their souls and the passion led them into a romance that was not always easy with her trying to hide who she was in her past and trying to stay on the lowdown off the radar in the music world.

Grab this up enjoy the rock romance with a few unexpected events that will lead you to fall in love with these characters

I fell in love with this book. From beginning to end you will be hooked. I laughed and smiled through out this book.

Fallon aka Face is a strong woman to walk away from her old life. Done is Hot Bad A $$ drummer with alot of guilt about his past. Fallon and Dame are perfect match to help each other from the past and into the future.

Kristen has written a beautiful love story and I can't wait to see if there will be more of The Hysterics! I know I will definitely be watching and reading them.

Fallon was a successful drummer in a successful band until the rock and roll lifestyle almost destroyed her. She has picked up the pieces and started fresh as Fae, an editor for a rock music magazine, but she knows she needs to stay on the outskirts so that she doesn’t repeat her mistakes.

Dane is a drummer for The Hysterics and although not necessary I do recommend that you read Before Hysterics to get the backstory on Dane and the band. He has been damaged by his past and gets through life one day at a time until Fae has him thinking about a future.
They are very attracted to each other but when Fae receives some surprising news they take a step back to friends. He is by her side and their feelings become stronger but is she willing to open up about her past to see what they might have together or are they destined to be only friends?

This is an emotional story about overcoming the mistakes of past and new beginnings. Dane was so supportive, and they made each other stronger.

This was definitely a much different approach to the very well known “rockstar romance” trope. Different-in a good way. There was definitely a lot to absorb in this book, and the author touched on some pretty heavy topics but does it so well.
Fallon was famous once upon a time, but felt it was necessary to fake her own death to get out of the addiction riddled world she once belonged to. When she meets an upcoming rockstar, she’s hesitant as her path before brought so much personal destruction. It really is a beautiful story how you can coexist in a world full of not only the rockstar status, prevalent addiction, and love. I really enjoyed this book, and was happy with how everything ended.

THE HYSTERICS is Dane and Fallon's story. They are both drummers and each is "beautifully broken" by events in their past. Each have walls up and feel unique in their experience yet - "It felt like we were two puzzle pieces that had been missing from each other's incomplete lives until now."

This is a quick an easy read that is a little different than the typical "rock star romance". The characters have a depth to them that is expressed within the story, not told with so much detail that I wanted to skim. Past and present were well told in this story and it flows from beginning to end. I read this book in one sitting and absolutely recommend it.

I really liked this book!! I liked how it showed you can start fresh and have second chances. You know get your life back and take control of it and make yourself proud of you. And that even if your broken doesn’t mean your not perfect because you are perfect for someone. Of course that’s just what I got out of it and you might get something else out of it. But Dane and Fallon are definitely worth a read. I love the dual pov’s!! The secondary characters are on point and I actually can’t wait to read their books! There was some bouncing around that I didn’t like, there was some that didn’t bother me though I think it might have been the subject at the time. But other than that I was really into this book and couldn’t put it down and would definitely recommend it.
