The Dark Between Stars by Kay Blake follows a story full of magic, mystery and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. Throughout its pages we get to meet our main character Rachel Calloway, who feels like she’s going insane after witnessing her father’s murder in the middle of a public park…yet no one believes her. What she witnessed of her father’s murder quickly disappears and she’s left behind in the middle of the park screaming for him over nothing. After being taken away by the authorities and accused of having a psychotic breakdown, Rachel quickly discovers that her father actually died three years ago. Because of this, even her best friend Marin thinks that whatever she saw at the park wasn’t real and she might be having a late response to her father’s passing and her grief. Yet that doesn’t stop Rachel from investigating some of the things her father left behind before passing. After all, before disappearing in her arms, he said something strange about the moon, a light and some doorway, which motivates her to look for clues and answers around her father’s old desk and even the public library. Because, no matter how hard she tries, Rachel simply can’t ignore the magical shimmer that she’s seeing around things, the weird symbol that appears alongside the shimmer and nor can she ignore the mysterious yet attractive Riven who clearly knows more than he lets on about what’s going on.

From my point of view, I believe that Rachel ended up being an enjoyable main character because she didn’t let the people around her stop her from looking for answers–no matter how mystical, mysterious or crazy they were. Even though she tried to pretend like everything was normal and she wasn’t seeing magical shimmers, having strange flashbacks about her father and some shadow people, she still didn’t back down and looked for an answer. Yet the best part was that she also allowed others to help her–and by others I mean Marin and Riven. When she needed someone to ground her back into the real world, Marin was there for her, and when she needed to know more about what was really going on, Riven was always there “by coincidence”. Which ended up making both Marin and Riven vital characters in Rachel’s search for answers and character development through the book. Another aspect that made me enjoy these characters and their purpose in the story was the fact that they all felt real and natural. Their interactions didn’t feel forced, their reactions to what was going on in the world around them felt real and, most importantly, they were simply enjoyable to read about.

Another great aspect that made this book turn into quite the fantastic read for me was the author’s writing. From the very beginning of the story, the author manages to quickly grab your attention and doesn’t let go until the very end of the story. The pacing of the story is fast, the writing is clear and direct and doesn’t get lost in info-dumping about the mystical parts of the story and, as mentioned above, it does a great job at making the characters likeable. Overall, The Dark Between Stars by Kay Blake ended up being a lot more enjoyable and engaging than I expected. It has magic, it has mysteries, it has a fight between good and evil, magical worlds, and good and enjoyable romantic tension between characters. I would definitely recommend this for fans of fast-paced, urban-fantasy worlds with magical secrets, and fun and enjoyable characters that will stop at nothing to get the answers they need to discover the truth.
