I have only two stay on Earth and die, or volunteer for the Alien Trade and bear the offspring of the Kharoi. The choice is simple. I’m just not prepared for my designated partner, Commander Asterion. Cold. Controlling. Unyielding. And yet, beneath his discipline, he makes me feel seen—cared for—almost cherished… until he reminds me of the truth. To the Kharoi, humans are pets, not mates. When he releases me, I think I can start over. I’m wrong. Asterion made enemies among my own kind, and now I’ve become their leverage.
Asterion
My species’ arrogance nearly destroyed us. Now the survival of the Kharoi rests on the one race I despise the deceitful, emotional, greedy humans. As commander, the first human volunteer for the Alien Trade belongs to me. I vowed I'd never betray the memory of my lost mate, and Dawn should be nothing more than duty, but she's an anomaly. Her tears are not a ploy. Her emotions are undeniably real. She is a disruptive force, tearing down the walls around my heart. Releasing her is the only way to stop myself before I ruin us both. I am a fool. I underestimated the depth of human treachery. Now Dawn is trapped in a lethal power struggle, and when I reclaim her, there will be no more restraint. No more denial. This time, I will not let her go—even if claiming her fully costs us everything.
This is a dark, standalone novella, HEA, and it's meant for a mature public.
Hi there! I'm Sienna, and when I'm not writing spicy happily-ever-afters, you might find me reading, whipping up a delicious meal, reveling in the beauty of nature, or exploring new corners of the world. After years spent crunching numbers and growing my accounting company, always weaving stories in my head, I finally took the leap in 2022 and pursued my lifelong dream of publishing my first book. What fuels my passion? A deep love for a good story and the many characters who take root in my mind, demanding their tales be told. The joy of bringing heartwarming love stories to life keeps me constantly creating, so stay tuned for what's coming next!
A Pet for the Commander is a slow-burn, sci-fi romance that sneaks up on you, wraps its claws around your heart, and then refuses to let go. What starts as a grim, utilitarian choice—stay on Earth and die, or be traded to an alien race for survival—quickly becomes something far more emotional and devastating.
Dawn is a beautifully written heroine. She’s not naïve about her situation, but she’s resilient, quietly brave, and achingly human. Being labeled a “pet” instead of a partner is dehumanizing in the most painful way, and the story never shies away from that discomfort. Her longing to be seen as more than a commodity makes every interaction with Asterion crackle with tension.
Commander Asterion is the definition of cold discipline on the surface—controlled, duty-bound, and shaped by loss. His internal struggle is one of the strongest parts of the book. He despises humans, yet Dawn dismantles his certainty piece by piece. Watching him wrestle with guilt, desire, and loyalty to his people is deeply satisfying, especially as his restraint slowly fractures.
The romance is a true slow burn, heavy with longing, denial, and emotional restraint. When the connection finally deepens, it feels earned and powerful. The power imbalance, cultural clash, and the “pets, not mates” mentality add a dark edge that makes the emotional payoff hit even harder.
Once Dawn is released, the story takes a sharp, thrilling turn. Betrayal, political maneuvering, and rising stakes push Asterion past the point of control, and his resolve to reclaim her is fierce, possessive, and utterly consuming. This is not a gentle love story—it’s about survival, sacrifice, and choosing love even when it threatens everything.
If you love alien romance with emotional depth, morally gray heroes, intense devotion, and a heroine who changes the fate of an entire species simply by being human, A Pet for the Commander is absolutely worth the read. Tender, brutal, and unforgettable. 🖤✨
There are 2 things in this world I will always read: 1) an alien or monster romance and 2) a Sienna Zini book. WE GOT BOTH Y’ALL!!! This was Sienna’s first novella and first book in the alien/monster realm and it has me craving so much more of this from her!
I loved how the book started out with Dawn, our FMC who was living on a dystopian Earth where most everywhere was uninhabitable and awful, was basically dying. This fact made any decision she made make sense, in that the alternative was…dying. From the very beginning I was rationalizing with our girl that anything was better than her current predicament and she had to at least try. Agree to marry an alien and be his breeder in exchange for a cure? Why not, she was probably going to die soon anyways if the cure thing was a hoax, and if she didn’t, she believed she was infertile. I loved that as time went on, Dawn got to experience so many new things, eventually including affection and love. Her journey from destitute worker bee to someone who felt worth of love was a great one to watch.
I loved the premise that the aliens have lost all of their women and now had to turn to humans in order to repopulate and continue their species. I further loved that our MMC and leader, Asterion, ABSOLUTELY LOATHED humans!! While his loyalty to his wife who had passed was admirable, he knew what he had to do for the good of his species, regardless of how much he didn’t want to with a human. But oh was he in for a surprise! I loved watching him slowly realize that Dawn was not like the terrible people in charge on Earth who he had dealt with. I loved that he went from treating her like a pet and a means to an end to an actual mate and lover.
I also really loved Dolos, Asterion’s best friend and right-hand man. Not only was he a calm presence for the group and scholarly, but he always seemed to be able to get through Asterion in a way no one else could. He didn’t have the hatred for all humans like Asterion did, being the one to lay out for his friend that Dawn was also subject to the evils of those in power on Earth and shouldn’t be blamed for their wrongdoings. I would definitely read a Dolos spinoff book; he’s my man!!
Thank you to Sienna Zini for always trusting me with her babies and for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
A Pet for the Commander pleasantly surprised me in several ways. This book contains a good amount of heart and story behind it and isn't just a vehicle for spiciness. The main character, Dawn, is kind of a figure of tragedy. She doesn't really have many options at the beginning of the book and so she accepts this contracts to breed with the aliens. She's a very stubborn, kind of crazy character. Sometimes I really don't understand why she acts the way she does, so I wish there was a little more internal monologue during those times so I understood if it was just her trauma that made her act that way or if it was something Asterion did.
Asterion is a really interesting character. This book is not for the faint of heart and you have to be prepared to read intimate scenes with a character that does NOT look human. The description of him at the beginning is almost a little monstrous and I wasn't sure if I would be able to handle it well lol. I guess I'm more of a prude than I expected. However, the author does a really good job of writing his character and humanizing him, so you grow to really empathize with and like him.
The book is very fast-paced and kind of flies through the exposition. I wish the book slowed down a little and was longer so that I could build more of a relationship with the characters. Honestly, I think the book could benefit from having another 100 pages and being inside the character's heads a little more, expanding on what they're thinking and feeling during pivotal moments in the book.
Overall, if you're a fan of a "mating" love story, I think you'll really enjoy this book.
I received an advanced reader copy of the book from the author and am writing this review of my own accord!
A Pet for the Commander was so much deeper than I ever expected it to be. This dark sci-fi romance completely hit me in the feelings — I spent most of the first half of the book in tears.
Following Dawn’s story was absolutely heartbreaking. Watching her slowly break broke me. She enters the ship already damaged, yet still shows incredible strength for as long as she can — until she simply can’t anymore. Everything she endures is painful to read, but her resilience makes her impossible not to root for.
Asterion, our alien MMC, is difficult from the very beginning. You can tell early on that there’s potential for kindness in him, but he’s buried under his own trauma. The way he treats Dawn feels like a knife to the heart, yet I kept holding onto hope that he would change. Heartbreakingly, Dawn is forced to endure even more trauma before that shift finally happens.
When Asterion does come to his senses, the payoff is incredibly satisfying. Seeing him become gentle, caring, and protective had me falling hard for him. The second half of this novella was unexpectedly sweet, and watching their relationship transform after so much pain made everything feel worth it.
Beyond the romance, this story also touches on how cruel, uncaring, and destructive humanity can be — and how desperately the world needs more compassion and love. This novella wrecked me, healed me, and stayed with me long after I finished.
A powerful, emotional read from Sienna Zini that I truly loved.
Wow honestly this book was actually so freaking good! I have never ever read an alien book before so this was a first for me and surprisingly really good. It was not bad at all but actually had all the things I look for in a book. It has a great storyline plot was top tier. The romance was broken and repaired not a slow burn spice was so good amazing lol. It has action and torture and trauma and abuse and emotional abuse/neglect. It really did have a lot more tropes than just those but I won’t spoil all the fun😂. It was very interesting tho all the futuristic sci fi quirks of the aliens and things they can do and the humans versus aliens was really interesting. It also was a very emotional book and the author did great to get detailed descriptions of the trauma and abuse and her emotions and thoughts and physical reactions and even getting the MMCs POV and thoughts and feelings it was so detailed that it felt so real. I rarely cry over a book but damn it made me tear up and catch my breath a few times it was so dark and intense and sad at times. Almost like you could feel her hurt in your own soul that’s how well the author wrote it. Honestly I loved it so much I will be seeking more books by this author and she even makes it to my favorite author list it’s a 10/10 for me!
The story opens with Earth in disarray and dying while life is a fight for survival. Dawn is gradually fading away but her one chance for survival lies on an alien ship so there really is no other option for her. Despite her physical weakness, she is strong but Asterion tests her strength until she is forced to make a decision. It is only then that he begins to realise humans, and Dawn in particular, maybe aren’t such a threat as he originally thought. I loved all the alien futuristic technology and the fact that their innovations were used for the good of humanity and Earth as well as for themselves. Although this is a book featuring aliens and their description is definitely not human, the author has given Asterion and his crew some human qualities so at times, when reading, it was easy to forget the alien features. This is a novella full of action and emotion with not much time to take a pause. It also shows how cruel and destructive humanity can be while the aliens are shown to be the opposite. Although this is not my normal choice of subject matter, I’m more than happy to read anything by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed this novella.
I really enjoyed this story. Starts with our main character Dawn fighting for her life and when opportunity shows, she takes it without question. The fight for life has not left her when she arrives at the alien ship and is being "given" to its commander as a "pet". Commander Asterion is the cold, calculated, heartbroken MMC, who is trying to save his race while also clinging to the past. The story was beautifully written and the plot went along with the spice so well. My heart was breaking for Dawn having to go through so much and break in so many pieces that she couldn't put back together. But Asterion fought for her as well, and I am so happy they got to get their HEA!
Thank you for the ARC!

I'm rather new to reading Sci-fi books, it has not appealed too much to me, but let me tell you, this well written novella has my heart. To be honest I hated Asterion for most of the book ! His actions were very questionable most of the time, ok let's admit that I wished for Dawn to kick him off the space ship ... Dawn is a complicated character, it broke my heart reading all about her struggles to survive on earth. She is strong, sassy and brave. This book has a few triggers so read them before embarking on this trip to see a beautiful, tense story between two different species unfold with the characteristic well written, spicy scenes a good plot by this author.
I’ve never read alien romance before. I honestly thought it’d weird me out. But since I’m already familiar with Sienna’s other work, I was naturally intrigued. And WOW, I wasn’t prepared. This book literally took my breath away.🖤
Dawn’s and Asterion’s relationship is heavy, intense, and somehow still so, so beautiful. The worldbuilding is excellent, and I really loved the dystopian setting, as well as everything that unfolded on the alien ship. There is some smut, but the story is very much plot-driven, which I appreciated.
Overall, this was a fantastic read, and I genuinely hope to see more stories like this from Sienna Zini.
This read was very fast paced, perhaps a little too fast in some parts, but A Pet for the Commander was a lovely between books light read.
I would have liked to see some aspects of the story fleshed out a bit more, as certain parts were given very vague details that I felt would have benefitted from more context such as the chest discs.
Overall I enjoyed seeing the turns Dawn and Asterion's relationship took and would read more of their story and of Kharos.
A Pet for the Commander by Sienna Zini is a sci-fi smut romance that comes with several trigger warnings, so readers should go in prepared. That said, the writing is beautiful and engaging, and the story itself is well put together. I really enjoyed the characters and their dynamic, which kept me invested throughout. While I’m not usually a big fan of novellas and generally prefer longer stories, this one still delivered a satisfying and enjoyable experience overall.
I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
perfect read to start the year with all the feels. couldn't put it down. devoured it in a less than a day. did I want to bash asterion over the head for being a stubborn judgmental idiot. yes. did I also love the grump of an alien by the end also yes. emotional rollercoaster/dark/plenty of spice. no notes!
I must admit that this story surprised me. I didn’t expect so many heartbreaking moments.
Dawn is a human that had a really hard life, and you can’t help but root for her. Her designated alien partner, Commander Asterion, is cold, unyielding and controlling. And he is determined to restrain himself and deny the bond they have.
Their story wrecks me and heals me, a powerful read with a lot of emotions!
what an amazing story line! I loved that it had twists and turns but also real emotions and thoughts. perfect read! in my top 10 of 2026! the way the mmc and fmc is written definitely gives all the tension, slow burning need. I love the ending, how it actually gave a glimpse of the future instead of abruptly ending with hea like so many. it is an HEA but I love the extra details.
I really liked this. I definitely went through the whole range of emotions from not liking the Commander to thinking Dawn was too wishy washy, the whole thing... but I really appreciated how it played out. I appreciated that there was struggle and growth. Overall, it was a good change of pace and an enjoyable read.
This was an amazing alien romance book. I really liked the premise and the characters. The struggles the human race is facing in the future were fascinating. My heart was with dawn the whole way thru. Please check your triggers as there are elements of torture etc. I recommend you read this novella for a different mindset.
Such a good alien/human romance. Dawn goes through it. Both before coming to the alien ship and even more afterwards. The commander had to get over his prejudices and basically has to almost lose Dawn to fall in love.
The smut is a bit more suggestive than spicy. Mildly spicy.
