Dr. Edward B. Fry’s Instant Words is also known as Fry’s Instant Words List or Fry Words. This is a list of the most common English words that are ranked according to the frequency of usage in printed material.
Developed by Edward B. Fry, Ph.D., it was an expansion on the Dolch Word List. Dr. Fry together with Jacqueline E. Kress published the list in a book called “Fry 1000 Instant Words” in 1996.
Briefly, Dolch Word List (a.k.a Dolch’ Sight Words or Dolch List) is a list of frequency word by Edward William Dolch, Ph.D. Published in 1948 in the book called “Problem In Reading”, it was based on the printed material of the era of 1930’s and 1940’s.
Dolch’s List consists of 220 most commonly used words in English language together with another set of 95 most common nouns. Known as sight words, these are words to be recognized by sight. Mastering them is very important to the reading and learning abilities of a child.
Children who had learned the Dolch’s words should continue with the Fry’s words. Actually most of the words from Dolch are included in the Fry’s.
The Fry List is an updated list. It listed the 1000 most commonly used words of much more present English language. Fry and Kress reported that:
1. The first 25 Fry words made up about one third of all the printed material 2. The first 100 Fry words made up about half of the words in printed material 3. The first 300 Fry words made up practically two thirds of all the printed material.
