It strongly feels like a debut novel: the text seems raw. There are many emotions and an interesting premise, but neither the plot nor the heroines are fully developed. The story turns out to be rather flat and somewhat dragged out, although I rarely call books slow. There is a lack of a cohesive bigger picture and meaningful connections. The heroines have supernatural abilities, but they feel random and do not add depth to their characters. The whole narrative looks like a fight with windmills: leaving, staying, constant back-and-forth. Many episodes seem to exist only to entertain the reader and increase the book’s length. The twist with the names is especially disappointing. The idea that the girls’ fates are the opposite of their names is put in the title and explained at the very beginning, but never truly explored. Why was it introduced and what was the point? It remains unclear. There are many such unfired “Chekhov’s guns” in the book. The ending is banal and predictable, just like the main conflict. The promised magical realism turns out to be a façade: merely a few fantasy elements that the story could easily do without.
