"Friend, enemy; Islander, Mainlander; silver, spirit wielder. When it comes down to it, people aren’t that different from each other. All we want is to be seen. All we want is kindness. Love. Love always wins in the end.”

The Island is at war. While Rex Manning is planning an attack on the Mainland, Skandar and his friends, reeling from the betrayal of one of their own, are trying to gather allies, make plans and figure out a way to protect both the Island and the Mainland. What ensues is a thrilling adventure full of elemental magic, friendship, love, ferocious unicorns, forgiveness and strange creatures – a story full of everything fans of the Skandar series love.

I was a bit nervous to begin this book, as I always am when I pick up the final book in a series I have loved. I didn't doubt Steadman would give us a good ending – she has convinced me over the course of this series of her ability to tell a good story – but it is always a bit nerve-wracking to finish a story you love. What if, somehow, it disappoints? Well, I am happy to report this book did not disappoint. For a while, I felt like it would be a 4,5/5 star book – great, but not quite on par with my fave books in this series (2 and 3) – but then, the second half blew me away and I kept bursting into tears as I made my way through the last 70 or so pages. At that point I knew: any book that makes me cry this much, makes me hug the book and feel so joyous, bittersweet and delighted has to be a 5/5 star novel. Steadman sticks the landing and gives her fans a wonderful, beautiful tale and an ending worthy of this wonderful series.

This review will be quite long because I have a lot to say, so if you just want a quick summary of my feelings: Incredible, showstopping, wonderful. Love these characters forever. One of my favorite series of all time.

Now, let's get to it, starting with the characters.

Skandar is such a sweet, soft, loving boy and I adore how, despite him being a spirit wielder and thus having a lot of cool, special abilities, he is not otherwise "special". He is a chosen one only because all the others like him were killed or banned from using their powers. His whole thing is bringing back people like him so he won't be singular anymore. What gets to me the most about him is how loving he is and how he is defined by his kindness and empathy, his desire to see the best in people. I loved this quote from him to Isa, Bobby's little sister: ”I suppose I’ve come to believe that people deserve second, even third, chances. If there’s a possibility that someone who has done something evil can change, then perhaps we should let them try rather than trap them in the mistakes they’ve already made. The world isn’t divided into good and bad people, Isa. If we believe that, we’re making the same mistake as Rex. I’ve tried to learn to see the good in people, even when they’ve done terrible things. If you see it, perhaps they’ll see it, too.” I love a soft hero, especially a soft boy hero. I think Skandar is a great role model for young kids reading this series: he shows the strength there is in being vulnerable and loving, and how it is something to celebrate in everyone, including boys who are so often taught to be tough and closed-off. There are bittersweet aspects to his ending, but overall I think the way his story concludes was so, so satisfying, exactly what it was supposed to be all along.

Bobby is my favorite of the series. She has matured so much over the course of the books and in this story you get to see the fruits of all that growth. She is still her brash, ambitious, confident, snarky and blunt self, but she is no longer bothered by the idea of not being the one in the limelight, of sharing that limelight with others. She still wants to be the best, but she will no longer give up friendships and her soul to do so. She is able to admits she is scared, and she has become quite the team-player. I love that this girl character gets to be loud, fiery and all those glorious things and be loved for them. Her ending, with her becoming Mitchell I fear was not given as much space in this book and at times he felt a bit sidelined, but even then he did have great moments that really showcased how brave he has become and how vital he is to Skandar's army; his brilliant brain and his nerdiness are vital, which I feel will empower many a nerdy child reading this story. He and Jamie remain super sweet and one of the most healthy, communicative and sweet romantic relationships I have encountered in a long while. Flo is MIA for a good while in this book which frustrated me a bit at first because I felt like the final book should have more of the quartet in it, but when she did make her comeback, it was perfect. Like all of these kids, she has changed so much from the kid we met in book one. She was so nervous, timid and shy, someone who didn't have a lot of self-confidence, and now look at her! She is so fabulous and such a brave, incredible, smart character. The idea that the shy Flo Shekoni

The quartet remains one of my favorite friendship groups in all of literature. I love how they all have their strengths and how they complement one another: Flo is caring and stronger than most, Bobby is all brash, explosive energy and near unmatched skill, Mitchell is their brainiac and the one they come to when they need something solver, and Skandar is their heart. I love how Skandar is not the one who is most powerful or the smartest; his superpower is his kindness. Their dynamic is tested in this novel as are each of them as individual characters, but, as all books in this series, this story is most of all a story of friendship and these four and their love for each other. They make mistakes, they doubt each other and sometimes they have falling outs, but there is always such love there. I loved their ending, with them The quartets' unicorns are also all, as always, precious and I loved the glimpses we got of the friendship those four share as well as the beautiful moments of love and connection between the unicorns and their riders. This quote, near the end, made me sob cause

There were tons of cool moments for the side characters as well. Amber's arc has been one of my favourites: seeing how she goes from mean girl bully to a dedicated spy and someone who risks her life to help Skandar's cause was just amazing. She remains her bitchy and often snarky self, but she becomes a better person. I loved seeing Agatha guide Skandar through this war and keep going even though she has made so many mistakes, lost so many and gone through so much shit. I loved that in the end she Jamie remains a cutie and I love how he shows – alongside Robert Smith, whose heroics were truly impressive to me and not something I expected him to pull off – that you don't have to have magical powers to be a hero. Kenna is a striking character. I loved her internal struggle, how she does her best to the right thing and be a better person than she used to be. She has done a lot of bad things and I like how she (and Skandar) understand why people are wary of her and cannot trust her. She isn't forgiven just like that; she has to earn people's trust. Her loneliness and otherness, the way she never fully belongs anywhere, made me so sad, as did her desperate desire to live and to stop her powers from waning. Even though she has done monstrous things, she is so human, in the end. Her ending was surprising but also satisfying cause The mystery of the Flame-Eyed Sentinel is finally revealed and that, too, was some wild shit. I loved how that storyline wrapped up and how is one that echoes so many of the central themes of this series.

I am so happy a story like this exist, especially at this point in time. As our world becomes more and more divided each day, it is so important that books like this exist for kids to read and learn from. Skandar's story is all about embracing our differences, unlearning prejudice and hatred, giving people a chance if they want to try and be better, and approaching others with empathy. Love and kindness are at the heart of this series. It is no surprise that it is the side of the heroes that have queer kids, POC characters and disabled characters while the enemy is led by someone who hates everything and everyone who is different. Rex in general is a great villain for kids to read about, as there are so many people like him in our world who twist the truth, manipulate people, use their charisma to do horrible things, and who want to destroy diversity. At many points, the characters talk about how the people Rex leads are people who are afraid of change, who don't want a world in which they are not on top and who are "content to live in a cruel world as long as they were safe". It is a great message for young readers that it is important to fight for those who are oppressed even if you yourself are safe. Also, I loved how the book, while it emphasises peace, love and togetherness, it also makes a point to show that sometimes fighting is necessary, that to refuse to fight is to let the enemy win. The Wanderers, despite having dedicated their lives to pacifism – an admirable goal – join Skandar because they cannot let Rex win. Sometimes, fighting back and rebelling is what is needed. Yes, in the end Skandar This series is full of wonderful messages and themes for young readers as well as older readers like me.

The book has some wild lore, new powers and even new, magical places. I loved seeing the spirit element become, once again, part of the Island's life and see characters be taught to use it like any other element. Learning about the First Children was a lot of fun, as was figuring out how they The First Rider, whom we encountered in book two, also plays a role in this story, which was super cool. Skandar and Everything to do with the I have always loved the magic of this series, even though what made me fall in love with these books were the characters and their dynamics. This magic is whimsical, occasionally dark, imaginative and beautifully wild.

Finally, I wanna talk about the romances. Flo and Skandar's slow growth from friends to lovers has been a key aspect of this series for a while now, so seeing all of that finally come to a head was lovely. I love how with them, we have this classic slow-build romance with quite a bit of tumult and struggle, while Jamie and Mitchell are this lovely, steady, unbreakable side couple that is just all sweetness, respect and comfort. I remember how overjoyed I felt when I realized that one of the main characters in a commercially successful, popular kids' series was queer (something I never saw as a kid!). Knowing that so many queer kids will get to read about a hero like them, who gets a happy relationship, tons of friends and whose whole story is about learning to love himself and be confident in who he is. It is hard for me to overstate just how flabbergasted I was, at the end of book four, when I slowly began to realize Mitchell wouldn't be the only queer main character in this story. I was punching my fist in the air and giggling with delight, the more scenes we got of Bobby and being flirty, silly and, despite all their checkered history and competition, become an unbreakable pair. They became my favorite couple in this series, by the end. The scenes that got to me the most were I never would've guessed, when I began this series, that we'd end up here but boy oh boy am I glad we did. Never would I have believed one day I would sit here, writing a review and declaring these two to genuinely be perfect for each other.

It is sad to say goodbye to this series (yes, there's a prequel coming but that's a different story with different characters) but I am satisfied with the ending Steadman gave us. It made me cry, laugh, smile and cheer. She gave her characters good, satisfying endings, and though she closes the door on their lives, the reader is left with the feeling that they will keep going, keep living, keep growing and change the world for good. Picking up Skandar and the Unicorn Thief was one of the best decisions I ever made and this is one of my favorite series of all time. Thank you, A. F. Steadman.

Predictions
Agatha will definitely die (nooooo I love this sassy queen) (hopefully she won’t) (she’s tough right?)
Kenna will be bonded with the dapple grey
Flo is actually on Skandar’s side and there’s a gigantic misunderstanding (maybe flo’s pov)
Flo gets with Skandar
Someone from the quartet (Bobby or Mitchell?) will get severely injured

I miss this series already... I want more stories in this world!

It's nice to see how the characters have matured, but they are still teenagers, so there is that to consider.
Some of the adults clearly didn't think maturing past teen-hood was a thing and were going to carry on regardless.

Oh, I liked how some disability representation in this was handled. It wasn't the main focus, nor the individuals infantilised. They just got on with it and did what worked for them, which I thought was nice.

I did wonder if the story would go the way it did. I don't think there was much else possible in the way of choice. That did make me quite sad...

Love this series! I'm going to be bias for a while...

This book is absolutely Amazing!🤩
It beats every single book I e ever read, and that means a lot.
Reading Skandar and the Spirit War is probably my favorite part of the day because something interesting,or shocking, or whatever it is I read encouraged me to read further.
But this book! 😆😆😆
This book wraps the whole series perfectly, and covers everything that never finished from the other four books. But personally, I would love for there to be more books about Skandar and his quartet.

🚫Spoiler Alert!🚫

I still hold a grudge on Flo though. Yeah maybe Flo and Skandar figured things out, but still! If she never betrayed him in the first place nobody probably would’ve been hurt.

And what happened to Kenna! I literally cried! That is probably one of the saddest parts. At least Skandar can still visit, it could’ve been a lot worse.

And the fact that Kenna was a spirit weirder that was also a silver!?! I wondered if that was possible since the beginning of the book! I still can’t get over that!

I’m so happy for Bobby! She finally got the victory she deserved! I knew this series wouldn’t end without her actually be in the Chaos Cup!

My question is did the quartet find a treehouse they could live in together?

Anyway, this series is AMAZING 🤩 and I 100% recommend this to everyone and anyone!!!
This is definitely five stars!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
And if I could give this book more stars, I would give it all of them!!

This series is definitely my favorite of all time, and I’m positive nothing else will beat it, but we’ll see!

This was worth every single minute of waiting :)
Mitchell and Jamie are the first gay couple I have ever read of, and they will always have a special place in my heart ❤️ (I love their love 💖( I know it sounds weird))
I liked this book a lot, and the fact that Amber and Bobby, who were freaking enemies, became a couple , awesome. (I love enemies to lovers books 😁)
I also likes Kennas ending but I found it quite sad , cus she'll never get to see Agatha anymore and it just is so sad that se fuckin scarificed herself for skandar's happiness .
Am I the only one who ships agatha and Elora. they are soooo cute together ❤️
I think it was one of the best books I've read this year and , believe me, I've read a lot( 40?) 😘

I started reading these books as a hater, but now ive found one of my favorite middle grade series. Im so sad that its over, but im so glad that this last book was so perfect. Finally after 5 books, A. F. Steadman has made a perfect ending to something. It's grown with its audience, so this book was fairly darker and heavier than the other ones, and skandar goes through so much heartbreak, betrayal, death and trauma (poor baby's got ptsd 😭😭😭) i teared up multiple times throughout multiple moments in this book and it just felt so monumental. Everyone's ending wrapped up so nicely and made sense within the story and it just eas perfect. I have no notes. I could not and would not have thought or even hoped for a better ending.

This series is going to have a special place in my heart. It's been a joy reading it with my son.

That said a series for children his age has no right to make me feel these emotions, the ending was really refreshing and it made me cry so 5 ⭐

This book is absolutely AMAZING! I'd rate it all the stars in the sky if I could! The concept of the ley lines!? The Spirit realm!? THE DRAGONS!? Incredible! And the way the prologue mimiced the prologue of the first book was amazing! Thank you A.F Steadman for bringing forth the best book series in all of history! I was screaming the entire time I was reading it! I will never get over these characters and their blood-thirsty Unicorns! I'm glad the quartet and everyone else finally got their happy ending but I'm also sad that the series has ended. At least their is a prequel coming soon! So excited!
