Sometimes running is the only thing that makes sense in Laurel Jameson's life. When life's stresses come at her like bad dates, a stagnant career trajectory, and parents who treat her like a wayward teenager instead of a thirtysomething adult, she works it out on the pavement with her friends in the Midtown Milers running club. However, when she cuts a slow driver off in traffic and he ends up being the group's newest member, they get off on the wrong foot, and his judgmental attitude threatens her peaceful Saturday routine.
Cal Tremblay came to Toronto to leave his divorce and the grief of a failed infertility journey behind. He seeks out fellow runners to show him around, but he never seems to say the right thing, especially around Laurel, the attractive woman who helps lead the group. But an exchange of teasing barbs between the two leads to a cautious friendship. After a training injury throws Laurel's half marathon goals and emotions into freefall, she starts to see another side to awkward a thoughtful friend or maybe even something more. But he seems distracted by his life back home and determined to shut her out. Will he ever be ready to open up about his baggage to let someone else in? With her heart on the line, Laurel may have to choose whether she needs to start running towards a new future, even if it means leaving Cal in the dust.
This is a fade-to-black adult romance set in Toronto, Canada.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!! I love books for all kinds of reasons, but this is one of the best reasons - I saw so much of myself in this book. No, I don't run, but when I lived in Toronto, I did the Sporting Life 10K more than once, walking. The book highlighted so many aspects of Toronto that I loved, and also gave me the most wonderful love story with ALL. THE. FEELS. I loved Laurel, Cal and the Milers running club. There is so much heart in this story. I smiled so much!!
This book has two things in it I really appreciate. One is when friendship leads to more and the intimate parts come more…flow and naturally (no innuendo intended, lol). It’s just more realistic.
The second thing is, of course, penis cookies. 🤪
Overall, this is a fun read, light but with enough serious things it isn’t vapid. I enjoyed it!
Love on the Run is poignant, funny, and deeply engaging. I honestly couldn’t put it down. While it’s a romance, it carries so much more weight than that label suggests.
The story tackles heavy, tender topics like grief, infertility, complicated family relationships, and the long, uneven road toward healing and personal growth. And yet, somehow, it never feels heavy-handed. The humor is genuine, the heart is steady, and the emotional moments feel earned, not forced.
This was also my first experience with a “fade to black” romance, and I loved it. The focus stays on connection, emotional intimacy, and character development rather than explicit scenes, and it worked beautifully.
Along the way, I found myself unexpectedly learning about running, community, and what it means to find your people, while staying true to yourself. By the end, I felt both satisfied and strangely comforted, the way only the best books can make you feel.
I loved this book and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a romance with depth, humor, and heart.
Can’t wait to read more from this wonderful author.
This was such a sweet story. I enjoyed the way the POV flip flopped between the two main characters, because you really got to know both of the characters that way. it didn't stop me from wanting to smack both of them at times, but that's also a sign of a great author that can bring characters to life like that. I can't wait to see what comes next from Greta LaCroix!
I was lucky to read an advance copy from the author. I have not received any compensation for this review. I love Laurel and Cal’s story. I love found families, which they found in a running club. I admire people who run long distance, especially in all weather! I love that this story takes place in Toronto, so the locations felt familiar to me. This is an enemies to lovers story; it has some lovely wicked banter. Laurel’s friends are amazing, I hope to read their stories in the future! The relationships Laurel and Cal have with their families and their backstories are nuanced and shows character growth. I can’t wait for others to fall in love with Laurel and Cal!
