One of my biggest complaints with modern Beano comics and annuals is that they aren’t anywhere near as funny as they used to be, I laugh more from the jokes at the bottom of each page than the characters in each issue. Because of this, I came into this year’s Christmas special expecting more of the same except from that it’s a retelling of Dickens‘ “A Christmas carol.“
Now I don’t know if it’s the same with each Christmas special as this is the first one that I have ever read, but I LOVED reading it! I was pleasantly surprised to be laughing out loud a lot more while enjoying the jokes and the plot of “A Christmas carol“ and they included a lot of the classic Beano charm that felt missing with previous titles. Scrooge looking like the mayor of Beanotown was a fun reference as it’s told in Dennis‘ words to his younger sister Bea as a bedtime story.
I loved how it actually seemed like a story that Dennis the menace would tell while still keeping to the original tale by Charles Dickens.
Whoever was in charge of the writing, hire them a lot more because this book was hilarious!
