it's been a long time since the ink dried, the pencils grew blunt and disappeared into the backs of drawers and the candles on the kitchen table went out.
today, from the quiet that came with my thirties, i looked back and opened my yellowed old notebooks again.
the pages had taken on the colour of the years, but my handwriting was still hurrying after itself with the same impatience. i couldn't help smiling when i saw it. some sentences give away your age.
there, at the beginning of every line, seventeen year old cassandra was waiting for me. the girl who believed falling in love for the first time could change the world, who studied people's faces and thought she'd figured them out, who believed that as long as she could write things down, nothing could ever be lost.
i looked at her for a long time.
then, without thinking, my hand touched the edge of the page. i didn't want to tell her anything, only to let her know she wasn't alone.
i'm no longer that girl between godsend's cold stone walls, trying to get a few more lines down before the candlelight ran out. it's been years since i left the castle. life has carried me into other seasons. but my old notebooks have always come with me.
whenever i open them, the same smell greets me. the coolness of old stone, damp, fresh bread rising from the kitchen. some smells don't seem to belong to time.
among the pages, i find seventeen year old cassandra again. the girl who believed the world could change direction with simon's arrival is still there.
i found myself pausing over these lines. i never thought of warning her. because today i know that some people don't experience their first love, they meet themselves for the first time.
as i turn the pages, my eyes linger most over the places where father fell silent. back then, i thought there was nothing inside that silence but a novel that couldn't be written. today, i see something else. sometimes what a person loses isn't their pen, but their faith in themselves.
when i come to the pages about rose, i don't feel the same ache i once did. when i was young, i thought all she wanted was to leave. now i understand that what she was really looking for was a life she could stay in.
and whenever i read stephen's name, i slow down a little. some people tell you they love you simply by always being there. i wasn't old enough to see that then. today, it's his silence i understand most.
back then, i thought all my attention was on the stone walls, the towers, the gardens. but looking back years later, i see that it's the people who have remained most vividly in my notebooks. the moment father fell silent, rose's impatient smile, stephen waiting. it turns out i wasn't writing the castle at all, but the life beating inside it.
dear past, dear seventeen year old me.. you thought you'd left your heart on that doorstep, in that rain-soaked courtyard.
you were wrong.
i just touched the edge of the page again. this time, not to comfort you.
to thank you.
because even when you thought you didn't understand anything at all, you were carefully recording all the ways people touched one another's lives. after all these years, those are the things that remain.
i'm gently closing the notebook now.
and today, i find myself most clearly in your handwriting.

mürekkep kuruyalı, kurşun kalemler körelip çekmecelerin dibine karışalı, mutfak masasındaki mumlar söneli çok oldu.
bugün, otuzlu yaşlarımın getirdiği o dinginlikten geriye baktım ve sararmış eski defterlerimi yeniden açtım.
sayfalar yılların rengini almıştı ama el yazım hâlâ aynı aceleyle birbirinin peşinden koşuyordu. bunu görünce istemsizce gülümsedim. bazı cümleler insanın yaşını ele veriyor.
orada, her satırın başında beni on yedi yaşındaki cassandra bekliyordu. ilk kez âşık olmanın dünyayı değiştirebileceğine inanan, insanların yüzlerine uzun uzun bakıp onları çözdüğünü sanan, yazabildiği sürece hiçbir şeyin kaybolmayacağını düşünen o kız.
sayfaların arasında yine on yedi yaşındaki cassandra'yı buluyorum. simon'un gelişiyle dünyanın yön değiştirebileceğine inanan o kız hâlâ orada.
sevgili geçmişim, sevgili on yedi yaşım.. kalbini o kapı eşiğinde, o yağmurlu avluda bıraktığını sanıyordun.
