A whistleblower is dead. A journalist is hunted. And only one man can keep her alive.

After a career in special forces, then as a smokejumper, Cole Mercer is ready for a new challenge. When he hears that the world-renowned covert operations team at Jameson Force Security is opening a facility in Seattle, Cole knows exactly where he belongs. What he doesn’t expect is to come face-to-face with the woman he never stopped loving—the one who walked away before either of them said goodbye.

Investigative journalist Tessa Ward has uncovered proof that a powerful real estate developer is tied to a string of deadly wildfires in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the kind of story that could make her career… or end her life. When her source is murdered in cold blood, Tessa realizes the truth is more dangerous than she ever imagined. With no other options, Tessa knows she has no choice but to turn to the one man she swore she’d never ask for help.

Some fires are set on purpose. Others never stop burning.

Their past ended in heartbreak, but when it’s clear she’s being hunted, Tessa and Cole are forced to set aside their hurt. As they chase a trail of corruption, arson, and murder, every life-or-death decision reignites old passions. But the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous the game becomes—and one wrong move could cost them everything, including each other.

ARC Review 📖

Sometimes you just need a book that offers the perfect mix of intense action and sweet second chances.

It was fantastic to see the team settle into their rhythm in the new Seattle office while navigating a dangerous wildfire conspiracy. The pacing was spot on, blending intense, heart-pounding suspense with the kind of high-stakes action that keeps you glued to the pages from start to finish.

The heart of the story belongs to the second-chance romance between Cole and Tessa. Five years apart did nothing to dim their connection, and watching them reconcile their past heartbreak while fighting to survive was incredibly compelling. Cole is the quintessential protector, and I loved watching him learn to respect Tessa’s fearless drive as an investigative journalist, even when it made his heart stop. Their growth together felt earned, realistic, and deeply moving.

While a few plot points felt a bit predictable, the chemistry between the leads and the strong supporting cast more than made up for it. Tessa is such a fierce, capable heroine, and seeing her hold her own in the face of true danger was satisfying. This is a brilliant start to the series, perfectly balancing thrills, steam, and genuine emotion.

If you want a story that packs a punch, you need to add this to your list immediately.

ALC Review (Audiobook) 🎧

Listening to this experience was an absolute treat, as the narrators, Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster, brought so much life and nuance to the characters. They perfectly captured Cole’s intense, protective grit and the fierce independence of Tessa, making every high-stress moment feel raw and immediate. The audio performance truly elevated the story, turning an already gripping mystery into an immersive emotional journey that I finished in one sitting.

~~~~
I was lucky enough to receive both an ARC and an ALC, and being able to immersive read and listen to this story made the whole experience even more special.
Huge thank you to Sawyer Bennett and The Author Agency for the ARC & ALC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
It has been some time since I read a Sawyer Bennett book, and I am so glad I picked this book up. I love a good second chance, add it the edge of your seat action and suspense, and I am hooked.
A new team, we are heading to the Pacific Northwest where a string of wildfires are the next case for Jameson Force Security. Cole is ready for this new challenge, a former special forces guy, and smokejumper. Little does he know the one he needs to protect is the “one who got away”
Together these two will fight the heat of the fires, and the bedroom. Cole is a natural protector, and with Tessa’s research, the two set out to follow the danger. The trail leads them through murder, corruption, and this dangerous game intensifies as they get closer to the truth.
Five years ago Tessa and Cole ended in heartbreak for both, can they make it work this time? I love Tessa’s fierce independence; she holds her own as they head into a dangerous situation. The supporting team gives us a hint at the future. A great start to the series, and Sawyer Bennett is an auto buy author once again.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
If your romance needs explosions, conspiracies, and a hero who would burn the world down to keep you safe... welcome to your next read. 🔥
📚 Code Name: Ember by Sawyer Bennett
✨ second chance romance
✨ romantic suspense
✨ protective hero
✨ forced proximity
✨ investigative journalist
✨ former Special Forces hero
✨ high-stakes action
This was everything I love about romantic suspense: fast-paced, dangerous, and impossible to put down.
Cole and Tessa haven't seen each other in five years, but when Tessa uncovers evidence linking a powerful developer to deadly wildfires and becomes the next target, there's only one person she trusts to keep her alive... the man who never stopped loving her.
Cole was easily my favorite part of this book. Protective without being controlling, fiercely loyal, and completely devoted to Tessa from the moment she reenters his life. Give me a competent alpha hero who quietly takes charge, and I'm happy. ❤️
Tessa's determination as an investigative journalist made the mystery feel believable, even if a few of her decisions had me wanting to yell, "Please let the security team do their job!" 😅
The suspense kept me hooked from beginning to end, and I loved how the romance developed alongside the investigation instead of taking a back seat. It was the perfect balance of action, danger, emotion, and steam.
🎧 Audiobook listeners: Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster absolutely delivered. They captured both the intensity of the suspense and the emotional weight of Cole and Tessa's second chance, making an already gripping story even more immersive.
As the first book in the new Jameson Force Seattle series, this was an excellent introduction to the team, and I'm already excited to meet the rest of these operatives.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
QOTD: Do you prefer your romance with small-town charm... or life-or-death stakes? 👀
Review of an ARC copy received from the author
I absolutely loved this spin-off from the Jameson Force Security series. It was everything I've come to expect from Sawyer Bennett; engaging, action-packed, emotional, and impossible to put down. Cole Mercer and Tessa Ward’s second chance romance was heartfelt and believable, while the suspense surrounding the investigation into corruption, arson, and murder kept the tension high from beginning to end.
Sawyer has a real talent for creating characters with unique, compelling backstories, and Cole's journey from special forces to smokejumper, combined with Tessa's fearless determination as an investigative journalist, made them a couple I was invested in from the start. Their chemistry, unresolved history, and unwavering loyalty added real depth to an already gripping story.
Sawyer Bennett continues to be one of my favourite authors because she consistently delivers stories that hit the mark. She blends romance, suspense, and memorable characters so effortlessly that every book feels fresh while still giving readers the sense of camaraderie and family that makes the Jameson world so special. This was another fantastic read, and I can't wait for the next one.
Code Name: Ember was an exciting blend of action, suspense, and romance that kept me hooked from the very first chapter. Sawyer Bennett does a great job balancing high-stakes missions with a heartfelt romance, making it an entertaining read from start to finish.
The chemistry between the main characters was one of my favorite parts of the story. Their connection felt natural despite the dangerous circumstances surrounding them, and I enjoyed watching their trust and feelings develop alongside the fast-paced plot. The protective instincts, teamwork, and emotional vulnerability added depth to their relationship.
The action sequences were well written and kept the story moving at a steady pace without overshadowing the romance. I also appreciated the camaraderie among the supporting characters, which made me even more interested in the series as a whole.
The only reason this wasn't a full five-star read for me is that some twists were fairly predictable, and I would have liked a little more depth in a few emotional moments before the conclusion. Even so, the story was engaging enough that I never lost interest.
Overall, Code Name: Ember is a thrilling romantic suspense with engaging characters, plenty of action, and a satisfying romance. If you enjoy protective heroes, capable heroines, and mission-driven stories with a strong emotional core, this is definitely worth picking up.
Cole and Tessa are thrown back together when her job, yet again, brings danger to her door. They've been apart for the last 5 years but Tessa knows that if anyone can help her it's Cole.
Cole is trying really hard not to lock her up and throw away the key so that the damn woman would finally understand just how important she is to him. When she escaped death and they're finally home, the thing that kept them apart is still there, live and breathing, threatening to pull them apart once again.
I loved the balance between danger and survival, love and refusal to change...all in all this was a great way to spend at the beach.
Tessa and Cole
3.5*
This was a good second chance, suspense romance story. Tessa is an investigator journalist when she witnesses a whistle blower being murdered she is now a target. She has no choice but to turn to her ex Cole. I liked this story not only do you get their reunion of this couple but also the suspense of exploiting a company, finding justice for the whistle blower. I enjoyed listening to this. The narrators did a good job.
Sometimes you just need a romantic suspense that completely sweeps you away in the action and protective heroism...I was in the mood for just that, and Code Name: Ember delivered. Action-packed, emotional, steamy, and impossible to put down, this is such a strong launch for Sawyer Bennett's new Jameson Force Seattle series. From the opening pages, I was hooked by the twists, the danger, and the second chance romance at the center of it all.
Five years after heartbreak pulled them apart, investigative journalist Tessa Ward and Jameson Force operative Cole Mercer are thrown back together when Tessa becomes the next target after uncovering a deadly conspiracy tied to a string of suspicious wildfires. A murdered whistleblower, corruption, arson, and powerful people with everything to lose? Yes so intriuging, I was hooked.
What really made this story work for me, though, was Cole and Tessa. Their chemistry never disappeared, even after years apart. I just love a good second chance dynamic and this one hit the spot. Cole is exactly the kind of protective hero I love. Fiercely loyal, incredibly capable, and willing to do absolutely anything to keep Tessa alive. But what I appreciated most is that his journey isn't about protecting her from danger. It's about learning to trust the woman he loves to chase the career she's so passionate about, even when it terrifies him. Their relationship feels mature, layered, and complex, with plenty of emotion alongside the steam.
Tessa was such a fantastic heroine. She's fearless, determined, and refuses to let intimidation stop her from uncovering the truth. Sure...there were a few moments where I wanted to yell at her to let the security team handle things for once (LIKE COME ON GIRL!), but that's also exactly who she is. FOrtunatelys he wasn't TOO hard headed about it all. And, her determination is what drives the investigation and makes the suspense feel believable, so I went with it.
The suspense itself kept me glued to the headphones. The investigation unfolds at a great pace, balancing explosive action with quieter emotional moments, and I loved watching the new Seattle team settle into their dynamic. The camaraderie already feels strong and I loved the found family aspect.
A couple of twists landed exactly how I expected, and I would have loved just a little more emotional depth in a few scenes near the end. Even so, the balance of suspense, romance, action, and heart made this such an entertaining listen If you love romantic suspense where the relationship grows right alongside the danger instead of taking a backseat, this absolutely delivers a fun time.
The dual narrated audiobook was fantastic too. Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster were the perfect pairing for Cole and Tessa. Stephen captured Cole's steady, protective nature without ever making him feel overbearing, while Kelsey brought Tessa's intelligence, independence, and vulnerability to life beautifully. Together they delivered all of the tension, emotion, and chemistry that made this story so engaging. Their performances elevated an already gripping story.
This was a fantastic beginning for the Seattle branch of Jameson Force, and I'm already excited to spend more time with this team. If you're looking for a great action packed, suspenseful story with capable leads, this is going to be a great series.
Fantastic Story & Narration🎧Thrilling & Riveting!
Code Name: Ember
Jameson Force Seattle, Book 1
By: Sawyer Bennett
Narrated by: Stephen Dexter, Kelsey Navarro Foster
It is thrilling to be back in Sawyer Bennett’s amazing “Jameson Force Security” world again for another exciting romantic suspense that captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. Bennett takes you to Seattle, Jameson’s newest location, introduces new characters, has cameos of characters from the Pittsburgh office visiting, and of course there is Malik Fournier who is running the office. This story stands on its own, so if you are new to the “Jameson Force Security” you can enjoy the story, never feeling lost or like something is missing, and everything you need to know is in the details. Starting off the series is Cole Mercer and Tessa Ward’s story, an action-packed story that takes you to the edge of your seat. Cole is a former special forces operative and former smokejumper, and she is an investigative journalist and his ex-girlfriend. After witnessing what happened to the whistleblower she was getting her information from for her current assignment, Tessa was in grave danger, and not knowing who to trust or call, she called Cole, her ex. Cole’s protective mode kicks in, and he will not only keep her safe, but the Jameson team will help with that and the investigation. It was great to watch her work on her assignment with help from Jameson’s team, trying to get solid information to prove what the bad guys, powerful men with money, did and continue to do. Tessa and Cole were great together and for each other, except they needed to get past their own insecurities and differences. This masterfully crafted, multi-layered story has the perfect balance of drama, angst, action, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt emotions, and a steamy second chance romance.
🎧📚🎧Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster are the perfect cast to bring these characters to life, and loved how they owned their roles, sounding believable in each. Dexter nailed it as Cole, grasping every aspect of his personality, from his caring and protective side to his fierce alpha side, and all in between. Navarro Foster was just as amazing in Tessa’s role and did the same with showcasing her personality and demeanor, also fierce. Both were fantastic at performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too. They set the ideal tone for the story, and their expressive delivery conveyed all the characters’ emotions, making you feel each one. These two make a fabulous narration team, with voices and talent that complement each other and a captivating performance that rivets you to the story. It is always a pleasure to listen to these two entertaining storytellers perform, a performance that takes the already amazing story to another level.
Code Name Ember is the first book in the new Jameson Force Seattle series and follows Cole as he protects former love, Tessa, an investigative reporter hot on the trail of an explosive story.
Cole has had several careers in his relatively short life. He was in special forces while in the military. He was a smokejumper for wildfires. And now, he is a member of the team at Jameson in Seattle, the new office just opened by Kynan and being run by Malik. He is excited for this new adventure, until he comes face to face with the one that got away.
Tessa is an investigative reporter for a local paper. She loves what she does and does not see it as dangerous. She tends to run in to a story without considering the danger she is putting herself in. This is what caused the demise of her relationship five years ago.
When Tessa is reassigned to another story to finish, she is not happy. She is going to continue the work she has been doing on her current project. She just knows there is a story to be told. So when she gets a call to meet her source, she goes. But she has no idea what she has gotten herself into.
When Cole receives a phone call, it is a blast from the past. But when he hears the circumstances behind the need for the phone call, the past becomes his worst, current nightmare. He will do his job, since Jameson is now involved, but he will not get involved. Yeah,, famous last words.
As Tessa continues to work on her story, she realizes the implications of what she is about to report. So when she receives an email from someone willing to corroborate the details provided by her source, she jumps at the chance. She has been cooped up at Jameson for days and is going stir crazy.
What Tessa does not know is that this person is not who she thinks he is. Her life is about to change and she only has hope that Cole will find her to hold onto.
Let me start by saying it was such a pleasure to see some of the original (truly original) Jameson crew in this story, plus the Pittsburgh crew. Seeing Kynan, Bebe and Dozer was a blast. But throw in Jameson, himself, and my day was made.
Seeing Malik and Anna opening the new location for Jameson is bittersweet. After everything they have gone through, especially him, I love seeing them happy. And Anna thrives taking care of others, so this is perfect for her.
Cole and Tessa have a history. Not all of it good. So when the same problem that caused their previous breakup rears its ugly head, will they be able to compromise or will it end with the same result? I think the advice that he is given, plus the time apart from her, allow him to really think things through. But the conversation with Malik about needing to see a therapist was, honestly, funny. Malik is more worried about where his head is and if he has PTSD when Cole is missing Tessa and is a lovesick puppy. It is comical to listen to them talk.
I think Tessa is determined, but this experience left a mark on her in so many ways. But is she ready to step back a little when it comes to the dangerous assignments? Only time will tell.
It has been forever since I have listened to Stephen Dexter narrate a book. I loved him as Cole. He stands his ground but is mush in Tessa's hands. Kelsey Navarro Foster is not new to me, but it has been years since I have listened to her narrate a book. I truly enjoyed her voice as Tessa and hope to listen to more books by her.
For those who crave their romance with a heavy dose of thrill and tension, Code Name: Ember by Sawyer Bennett delivers exactly that: a potent mix of high-stakes danger, second chances, and a fiercely protective love story. A romantic suspense, it stands out for its seamless weaving of action and emotion, making it impossible to put down.
What sets this book apart is undoubtedly the chemistry and complexity of Cole and Tessa. Cole, the former Special Forces hero, embodies the alpha archetype without tipping into cliché or control freak territory. His quiet competence and unshakable loyalty offer a refreshing take on the protective hero trope, making his devotion feel both earned and heartfelt. He’s not just muscle; he’s a stabilising force in Tessa’s turbulent world.
Tessa, as an investigative journalist uncovering corruption tied to lethal wildfires, brings both grit and vulnerability. Her tenacity adds realism to the story’s mystery and suspense, though at times, her choices felt a bit reckless—enough to make any cautious reader wish she would lean more on the security detail. Yet, this human flaw doesn’t detract from her strength; instead, it makes her journey and the stakes feel more immediate and relatable.
The novel succeeds in maintaining a fast pace that balances adrenaline-fueled sequences with moments of intimacy and emotional growth. The conspiracy woven through the plot feels timely and credible—melding the environmental threat of wildfires with corporate malfeasance is deftly handled, providing a gripping backdrop to the romance. The forced proximity scenario between Cole and Tessa reignites their past connection with a believable urgency that keeps both the action and emotional arcs intertwined.
The blend of mystery, romance, and action creates a compelling narrative rhythm that fans of romantic suspense will appreciate.
Sawyer Bennett’s writing is direct and engaging. The plot strikes a tone that is both urgent and tender, allowing moments of passion and introspection to balance the intense external conflicts. The romance never takes a backseat to the investigation; rather, it pulses alongside it, creating a dual narrative that enhances reader investment in both the characters’ safety and their emotional reunion.
Ultimately, Code Name: Ember is a thrilling ride filled with romantic suspense, fast-paced, fierce, and heartfelt. If you enjoy alpha heroes who protect rather than possess, strong heroines with a cause, and stories with danger and desire, this book is a perfect match. Readers seeking a balanced blend of action and romance with believable stakes will find it hard to resist.
Review: Code Name: Ember by Sawyer Bennett
Format: Audiobook (ALC)
Narrators: Stephen Dexter & Kelsey Navarro Foster
Narration Style: Dual POV
Spice: 2/5
This was my first book by Sawyer Bennett, and it was such a fun, action-packed romantic suspense!
Code Name: Ember follows investigative journalist Tessa Ward, who uncovers evidence linking a powerful real estate developer to a series of deadly wildfires. When her source is murdered and she realizes she’s become a target, she has no choice but to turn to the one person she knows will keep her safeher ex, Cole Mercer.
Cole is an ex-military operative now working for a private security firm, and let me tell you, this man is the definition of protective. If you love a “touch her and die” hero, Cole absolutely delivers. Watching him step back into Tessa’s life after five years apart while trying to protect her from very real danger made for such an entertaining read.
I absolutely loved Tessa. She’s intelligent, fearless, and willing to take risks to uncover the truth. She felt like a genuinely strong heroine who could hold her own, even when the danger around her continued to escalate.
The second-chance romance was one of my favorite parts of the story. The chemistry between Cole and Tessa never truly disappeared, and watching them work through old heartbreak while navigating a dangerous investigation kept me invested in both the romance and the suspense. Cole’s struggle with Tessa’s career was especially interesting because he wants to protect her, but he also has to learn to respect the fact that chasing dangerous stories is part of who she is.
The suspense element kept the story moving at a great pace. Between the wildfire conspiracy, murder investigation, corruption, and trying to figure out who was behind everything, there was always something happening. It had that perfect balance of romance, mystery, and action that kept me turning the pages.
And I have to talk about the audiobook. I was lucky enough to receive an ALC, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to listen to this one early. Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster were spectacular. They both did an amazing job bringing Cole and Tessa to life, adding so much emotion, tension, and personality to their performances. Their narration elevated the story and made it even more engaging from start to finish.
Code Name: Ember by Sawyer Bennett is a romantic suspense that follows Cole Mercer and Tessa Ward. Cole is an ex-military operative, former smoke jumper, and now is working for a private Security firm, Jameson Force in Seattle. Tess is an investigative journalist, who does not shy away from the dangerous stories that most would walk away from. Cole and Tessa previously dated 5 years prior, but mutually decided to end the relationship because Cole couldn’t handle Tessa putting herself in danger to follow her career, and Tessa wouldn’t give up her career for Cole.
Fast-forward to present day and Tessa finds herself chasing the story of her career, but has put herself in danger and the only person she can think of turning to for safety is Cole. Cole immediately wants to shield Tessa and have her drop the story, but Tessa wouldn’t be who she is if she gave up that quickly.
I absolutely loved the spunk and sass of Tessa and how she complemented Cole’s seriousness and had no issue of calling him out when needed. The tension was there from the beginning, and it was very apparent that while they split, they never got over each other. I loved the second chance romance in this story. It was very apparent that they were trying to work through the old arguments, while both possibly imagining a future together. Yes, there is a 3rd act breakup, but it was a necessary one for each to really evaluate their feelings for the other and to see what they wanted for the future. Listening to Cole work through his feelings over Tessa’s career and Tessa coming to terms with what Cole had always been afraid of was one of my favorite aspects of this book.
The suspense was fun to read, and kept me engaged throughout the whole story. Listening to Tessa and the Jameson Force teamwork through everything really gave the story a realistic feel.
Audiobook Review: Stephen Dexter & Kelsey Navarro Foster did an amazing job of narrating Cole and Tessa. You could feel the emotions that the characters were dealing with, and the tension between them. This was a great audiobook that kept me listening from beginning to end.
Overall, if you love second chance romance, romantic suspense, protective hero, forced proximity, ex-military MMC and a strong FMC then I definitely recommend picking this one up! I already know I’ll be on the lookout for the next book!
Tessa Ward is an investigative journalist on the trail of corrupt business practices in the Pacific Northwest. When her source is killed in front of her, she knows the evidence he collected and passed to her must be correct and her only hope is that her identity is still secret. But that’s a chance she can’t take, so she turns to the only person she knows who might be able to help her dig deeper: an ex who couldn’t handle the dangers of her job when they dated years ago.
Cole Mercer is a former smoke-jumper and Special Forces operative who now works for Jamison Force Security in their Seattle expansion office. He never expects to hear from Tessa again, but when he learns she is in danger he can’t help but jump in to protect her and try to control the situation.
As they work together to sift through Tessa’s evidence and Tessa builds her story, it becomes clear that not only does Tessa have a target on her back, but the story has a wider reach than she predicted at the start.
I loved the proximity and the way it forced them to confront the parts of their past that were still holding each of them back. Their chemistry was strong from the beginning.
There were times that Tessa, though fierce and capable, made decisions that made it hard to not be frustrated at her. But she does have a solid head on her shoulders and is a good problem solver under pressure.
I had the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of the audio and love the way Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster gave life to these characters. There were a couple moments where local place name pronunciations pulled me out of the story, but these are minor and the average listener won’t notice. I was otherwise able to sit back and be immersed in this suspenseful world as the narrators added intensity to the character’s plight.
I have always enjoyed the Jameson Force team and am looking forward to continuing their story in a part of the country that holds my heart.
CODE NAME: EMBER is the first instalment in Sawyer Bennett’s contemporary, adult JAMESON FORCE SEATTLE romantic suspense series, set in the author’s JAMESON FORCE SECURITY worlds. This is former Special forces, turned smoke jumper / covert security operative Cole Mercer, and investigative journalist Tessa Ward’s story line.
NOTE: due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Cole and Tessa) CODE NAME: EMBER follows the second chance relationship between our story line couple. Cole Mercer walked away from the woman he loved when she continued to place herself in danger for her job not thinking that his own job was deadly at every turn. Now working for Jameson Security in Seattle, Cole finds himself guardian and protector of the woman he still loves, a woman whose latest assignment has become deadly and dark. Tessa Ward is all about uncovering the truth but when her source is murdered, Tessa knows she may be next, and contacts the only man she has ever loved. Cole continues to struggle with Tessa’s need to place herself in danger, and in this, her actions threaten everyone involved.
The world building focuses on corruption and fraud; on revealing the truth no matter the cost, a cost that has already claimed a life.
The relationship between Cole and Tessa is a rekindling romance but a relationship that continues to struggle with the same issues from the past. Cole battles between head and heart knowing his own job places him in the direct line of fire but Tessa , often TSTL, refuses to acknowledge the threats to her own life. The $ex scenes are limited, passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, familiar and charismatic secondary and supporting characters including several from the original two series. We are reintroduced to Jameson Security Force owner Kynan McGrath, original owner Jerico Jameson, Malik Fournier, Josie McAdams, Reid, as well as newcomers Brady Frost, and Caroline Prescott. The requisite evil has many faces.
CODE NAME: EMBER is a fast paced story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, fraud and corruption, forgiveness and love. The character driven premises is thought provoking, dramatic, edgy and gritty; the romance is impassioned; the characters are forceful, desperate, determined and animated.
When Sawyer Bennett teased she was going back to a favorite cast of characters I BEGGED for Jameson! And OMG, she did not at all disappoint with the new office in Seattle! We got to meet some new members of the team in Seattle but then we were gifted with a little walk down Jameson memory lane with so many of our favorite operatives- let’s just say that Malik is perfect to be the new head guy!
Cole Mercer is a quiet leader and steady force that is cool under pressure and has high standards for himself. His background fascinated me from the start, in the Army special forces (obviously, Jameson only hires the best of the best), and a smoke jumper. He gives off the air of calm aloofness, that is until Tessa Ward comes back into his life and all of that calmness is out the window.
Tessa Ward, an investigative reporter witnessed too much and she calls her ex Cole Mercer for some help. Not only does Tessa take her job seriously she doesn’t lose sight in her role in helping those who have become victims in one way or another..sometimes even forgoing her own safety. While Tessa is fiercely independent and something that Cole admires, she also knows when she needs a team and support to help her reach her end goal. I love how she developed a bond and relationship with the other women within Jameson.
From the start the tension, chemistry and connection was off the charts between Cole and Tessa. It was obvious they make an amazing pair. They are both insightful, observant and their banter and sexual connection almost melted my kindle! It is clear that there are still some unresolved things at play and they just go about ignoring- which is always healthy and never ends badly ha-ha-ha! I was also fortunate enough to listen to the audio for this book and Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navaro Foster really did an amazing job bringing Cole and Tessa to life.There was a line where Kynan and Jerico Jameson called one another; “Insufferably competent” and all I can say is that everyone at Jameson fits this description and I am 100% here for it. I am so ecstatic to be back in the Jameson world! If you haven’t read the previous Jameson Security I think you could start with Code Name; Ember, but you are going to fall in love with this crew and most definitely want to go back and read the other books while you wait for the next release, Code Name: Harbor which releases on 9/15/26!
Jameson Force is back—this time in Seattle—and I couldn’t be happier to dive back into Sawyer Bennett’s world. This kickoff to the Jameson Force: Seattle series is everything I love in a romantic suspense: fast-paced, emotional, and completely captivating from start to finish.
Tessa Ward is the kind of investigative reporter who doesn’t back down from the big, dangerous stories—and this time, her pursuit of the truth puts her directly in the line of fire. When she uncovers a connection between a powerful developer and a string of deadly wildfires, things escalate fast. With her source murdered and a target on her back, she turns to the one person she never expected to rely on again—her ex, Cole Mercer.
Cole, a former military operative now working in private security, is the definition of protective. If you love a “touch her and die” hero, he absolutely delivers. Watching him step back into Tessa’s life after five years—while trying to keep her alive—adds the perfect mix of tension, emotion, and second-chance sparks.
As expected, old wounds reopen, tempers flare, and neither of them backs down easily. But what they’re up against is bigger than both of them, and they’ll need the full strength of the Jameson team to survive it.
This one blends second-chance romance with gripping romantic suspense, layering in a fiercely protective hero, a high-stakes investigation, and nonstop action and danger that keeps the tension sky-high. And the audiobook? Absolutely fantastic—immersive, emotional, and perfectly performed.
🎧 Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster were perfect in the audio. Dexter brought Cole’s protective, alpha edge to life flawlessly, while Navarro Foster captured Tessa’s strength and determination just as powerfully. Together, they made the story feel even more real and immersive.
Told in dual POV, this story pulls you deeper into both sides, making every argument, every decision...Action-packed, emotional, and seriously entertaining—this was such a strong start to the new series.
Thank you to Sawyer Bennett and The Author Agency for the ALC and sending me to Seattle!
They're back, heat, suspense and romance!
They're back! A new city and a new team, Jameson Force has set up business in Seattle. CODE NAME: EMBER is a protective alpha, touch her and die, forced proximity, second chance romance which is action packed, tension filled, suspenseful, and pulls on the heartstrings.
Tessa Ward, an investigative journalist, uncovers a link between several deadly wildfires and a real estate developer. After her source is murdered in front of her Tessa realises she is in danger and calls the only person she knows will be able to help her. Cole Mercer is ex-military and now works for Jameson Force Security, he's also the man who walked away from Tessa five years ago. When Tessa calls asking for help Cole's protective mode goes into action. Keeping her safe is his priority and it's not long before Jameson Force becomes involved.
Tessa is a strong, brave, and totally stubborn woman who just wants to work her investigation and write her story. With help from the Jameson team she begins to gather incriminating information which causes Cole to increase his protection, which only angers Tessa. The chemistry between Tessa and Cole sizzles, neither have lost the love they shared five years ago, yet the reason why they originally separated still exists. Will Cole be able to keep Tessa safe? Will they be able to face their past difficulties and come to a new understanding?
🎧Audio Review🎧
Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster were incredible in bringing Cole and Tessa to life, as well as portraying the other characters. Stephen was ideal as Cole. The rasp of his voice was perfect in bringing across Cole's alpha protectiveness as well as his tenderness. Kelsey's portrayal of Tessa was sublime. The fierceness, sweetness, and her determination came across with ease. I really loved this pairing.
CODE NAME: EMBER was a terrific introduction to this new series. Sawyer brought all the action, drama, suspense, emotions, and heat which I have come to love from her books. This second chance romance is definitely well worth the read.
5 Suspense and Tension from Beginning to End Stars!
The minute I started this book I knew I was in for a wild ride! As I listened to Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster in the first few chapters as everything that Tessa is working on and Cole is now protecting her from, I was literally fidgeting with a fast heart beat and some angst on what could happen next.
One of the things I love so much about this book, is not only are we getting an amazing suspense filled story, but a second chance at love that is definitely not going to be easy. Both Cole and Tessa are stubborn and principled in their respective careers and both provide their own dangers. The difference between them is that Cole knows how to protect himself and Tessa thinks that any chances she takes in reporting her story are worth the risk and she’ll deal with it when it comes. Yeah, that comes faster than she thinks.
These two are still so connected emotionally and having to be with each other while Tessa works on her story and all the happenings that are at the root of her story, leave both of them at times testy with each other and also wondering what it would be like to give into the desire still so present. The slow burn between just makes the moment they give in that much hotter.
There’s so much suspense with this book. We are introduced to some amazing secondary characters that are all part of the Jameson team. We also see favorites from the team in Pittsburgh as well. These people will anything and everything to help Tessa and the technology being used is above and beyond anything I would’ve thought of that’s for sure. This story moves at a lightening pace which just had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Being able to read and listen to this book at the same time was amazing. I totally immersed myself and felt every single emotion, action and scene. There’s a lot to unpack between Cole and Tessa. Are they able to see past what they each feel is of utmost importance? Will they make any compromises? Will they let this second chance slip by? You’ll need to read and/or listen, or do both like I did to get all of these answers along with an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end.
🔥❤️ Some Fires Never Truly Burn Out ❤️🔥
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️
Sometimes you pick up a book hoping for action and suspense, and you end up finding an unforgettable romance along the way. Code Name: Ember delivered everything I love about romantic suspense—high-stakes danger, a compelling mystery, and a second-chance romance that never lost sight of the emotional connection between its characters. This was my very first Sawyer Bennett book, and I can confidently say it won't be my last.
Cole Mercer was everything I want in a romantic suspense hero. Protective without ever being overbearing, fiercely loyal, and quietly confident, he never tried to stop Tessa from being the fearless investigative journalist she was meant to be. Instead, his journey became one of learning to trust the woman he loved, even when that meant letting her chase stories that terrified him. Watching Cole balance his instincts to protect with his respect for Tessa made him an easy book boyfriend.
Tessa was just as impressive. She was intelligent, determined, and completely committed to uncovering the truth, even when powerful people wanted her silenced. Sure, there were moments where I wanted to tell her to let the Jameson Force team handle things for a minute, but that's also what made her such a believable heroine. Her courage drove both the investigation and the romance, and I admired that she never lost sight of who she was.
Together, Cole and Tessa proved that five years apart couldn't erase the connection they shared. Their second chance felt genuine, their chemistry never wavered, and I loved that their relationship grew alongside the investigation rather than taking a back seat to it. The suspense, action, romance, and found family atmosphere of the new Seattle Jameson Force team blended together perfectly, making this an incredibly entertaining read from beginning to end.
Thank you to Sawyer Bennett and The Author Agency for providing me with a gifted advanced reader copy. I am so grateful for the opportunity to read and review this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Jameson Force is back with a new team in Seattle and I couldn’t be happier!
This first book in the “Jameson Force: Seattle” series had me sucked in from the get-go!
An investigative reporter named Tessa Ward, who does not shy away from the “bigger” stories in order to right wrongs and expose whoever’s the reason or problem in causing said wrongs, has a lead on a story that has the potential to reveal something extremely damaging on a large corporation. Her source finally contacts her with the promise of tangible evidence that can finally help to uncover this company’s horrible wrongdoings. After meeting with her source in a parking garage, Tessa is given the information but trouble is right around the corner. Tessa’s source doesn’t realize they’re being followed and after the exchange, things go horribly wrong.
Tessa has to find a way to keep this newfound information, as well as herself, safe so she can finish up her article and get it to her editor. The only person she can think of to help her is an old boyfriend she hasn’t seen in about 5 years.
Enter Cole Mercer, who was formerly Army Special Forces, then did “Smoke Jumping” but is now one of Jameson Force - Seattle’s new recruits. Cole’s damn good at his job & is really liking his new position at Jameson. The last thing he expected though was to hear from Tessa when she calls him & asks for his help.
What happens next? Well, tempers flare; old arguments resurface and it’s sometimes a contest to see who’s being more stubborn but what lies ahead for Cole & Tessa is no easy task. They’ll need help and support from some of the rest of the Jameson team in order to get this job done.
The book is written from both Tessa’s and Cole’s POV, which makes it all the more interesting. I loved this book because it was exciting, and it was very hard to pick a side when Cole & Tessa argued. My favorite part was from Chapter 19 on, because Ms. Bennett took the story in the perfect direction and had me riveted.
I cannot wait to read more stories from Jameson - Seattle! Awesome 😎 read!!!!
Tessa Ward is an investigative reporter who has just been in the wrong place at the wrong time and is now concerned about her safety. And the only person she can think to call is her old boyfriend who now works for the new Jameson Security office in Seattle.
Cole Mercer is an ex-Army Special Forces and smoke jumper now turned private security specialist in the ultra-tech security business. And he is not prepared to hear from his old love and realize that she is in danger. He is smart, capable, protective, and determined to keep her out of harm's way. I loved Cole is such a devoted and likable guy, but despite his usual control and strength, the thought of her being hurt really affects him.
Tessa is stubborn, relentless, driven, and sometimes reckless. She is determined to break this story no matter the cost. She is resistant to all the measures Cole wants to take to protect her. Sometimes she frustrated me a bit.
They have a lot of unresolved feelings and tension between them. Along the way, they are reconnecting and realize just how scary it is to find each other again and face the risk of loss.
This is a second-chance, forced proximity, one-that-got-away, working together and romantic suspense story centered around a dangerous investigation and threats. It kept me intrigued and interested throughout. It starts a new spin-off Seattle series and brings back from old friends from the previous Jameson series and brings us some new ones. I am looking forward to more with this new team.
This was my first Sawyer Bennett book, and I can already tell it won't be my last.
Blending romance and suspense, this story struck a great balance between emotional moments and edge-of-your-seat action. The second-chance romance between Cole Mercer and Tessa Ward felt authentic, and the dangerous investigation involving corruption, arson, and murder kept me invested from the very first chapter.
Cole and Tessa's history added so much depth to their relationship. Their breakup wasn't because they stopped loving each other, but because Cole struggled with the constant danger that came with Tessa's career as an investigative reporter. Being forced to work together again gave them the opportunity to confront the past, and I loved watching them slowly find their way back to each other.
Their relationship was easily the highlight of the book for me. The chemistry never felt forced, and every interaction carried the weight of their shared history. Seeing them learn to trust each other again while navigating life-threatening situations made their romance even more rewarding. Cole's protective instincts, Tessa's determination, and the way they relied on one another created a relationship that felt both believable and emotionally satisfying.
The suspense was equally well done. Every new discovery pushed the investigation forward, creating just enough twists and danger to keep the pages turning. The action was exciting without overwhelming the romance, allowing both storylines to shine.
I also loved the dynamic within the Jameson team. The friendships, loyalty, and banter between the supporting characters made the world feel fully developed and left me looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
If you're looking for a romantic suspense that delivers action, emotional depth, a compelling second-chance romance, and characters you'll be rooting for from start to finish, I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR.
Code Name Ember (Jameson Security book 1) is my first book by Sawyer Bennett and it won't be my last. I love a good romantic suspense but this one checked all the boxes for me.
Cole Mercer is a former special forces operative and smoke jumper, but after an incident he is ready for a change and Jameson Security is just what he needs. When investigative reporter Tessa Ward uncovers a dangerous story that leaves her informant dead, she has only one person she can trust, Cole. The problem? It's been five years since their relationship ended.
Cole immediately steps up and rallies his team at Jameson around protecting her and helping her get the story and catch the criminals. This is a second chance romance, and these two have a chemistry and connection that 5 years apart hasn't dimmed. However, the danger she puts herself in to uncover the stories as part of her job and Cole's need to protect her from it hasn't changed. It’s who they are. These two elements in their personalities clearly clash with each other. How will they navigate her job, his need to protect her from what is clearly REAL danger and have a lasting relationship?
If you love romance with plenty of suspense, danger, and a couple worth rooting for, this book is one I highly recommend. I'm already diving into Sawyer Bennett's backlist while impatiently waiting for Book 2!
Audio Review:
Let's talk about the audio. The audiobook elevated the experience even more. Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster do a masterful job at bringing Cole and Tessa to life. You could just hear the emotion, chemistry and the intensity between Cole and Tessa. Their narration made the story feel incredibly immersive.
⭐️ What I Loved:
Second-chance romance
Romantic suspense
Protective hero
High-stakes investigation
Action and danger
Fantastic audiobook narration
⭐️ 4.5 | 🌶️ 1 | Arc Review
This book was absolutely captivating. It’s the kind of story you pick up thinking you’ll read a couple of chapters, and the next thing you know, you’ve lost an entire day completely immersed in a fictional world. I mean, we have arson and murder by Chapter 2. what’s not to love?
When the story Tessa is investigating turns deadly and she becomes a target, there’s only one person she can call, who just so happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Enter Cole the former Special Forces soldier, smokejumper, and now protective agent. We love a man in any kind of uniform, honestly.
I really enjoyed this take on second-chance romance because their separation wasn’t caused by a simple misunderstanding. Cole couldn’t cope with the risks Tessa constantly took in pursuit of a story, and that conflict remained a driving force throughout the entire book, even as they rekindled their relationship. There was always this underlying tension lingering beneath the surface.
And when Tessa ultimately proves Cole right by risking her life yet again for a story, it leads to some of the most heart-pounding moments in the book. Seriously though why is it always the smartest women that make the most questionable decisions?
Cole and Tessa worked so well together. Amid all the danger, suspense, and chaos, they shared some genuinely tender moments that balanced the story beautifully. It was those quieter moments that really solidified their connection.
For my first book by this author, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. As a romantic suspense girlie, I’ll definitely be picking up more of their books.
I received an advance copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cole Mercer, a former Army Force Specialist, then a smokejumper decided he needed a change and jumped at the chance to join Jameson Force Security, a new division opening up in Seattle being run by Malik Fournier.
Tessa Ward is an investigative journalist for the Emerald City Herald. When Erik Lanning calls Tessa out of blue with information about a real estate developer starting illegal fires for the property, she jumps at the chance to chase the story. After agreeing to meet in a parking garage, Erik hands over a jump drive containing all the info and moments later an SUV comes flying at him killing him. Tessa takes off running and thankfully escapes. Now realizing she is in serious danger she calls the only person she can trust....Cole. It's been five years since they broke up, but he's still the love of her life.
Cole is surprised to hear from Tessa and agrees to help her even though her putting herself in danger is the reason they broke up in the first place. When the danger finds Tessa at her house, Cole insists she moves into his apartment at Jameson Force Security to keep her safe. The Jameson team agrees to help her bring down the bad guys with everything available to them. Just when it looks like the story has been broken open, Tessa finds herself in even more danger. Thankfully Cole comes to the rescue but they find themselves in the same situation regarding her and danger. It will take a lot of soul searching for these two to find their way back to each other but when they do it's perfect!
I just adored this steamy, second chance suspenseful romance. Cole was so yummy! I loved his take charge ways. Tessa was a little stubborn at times but deep down she really loved Cole. Together these two find the love many people only dream of.
When your ex is the only person you trust to save your life… things are about to get interesting. 🔥
Jameson Force is back (yay) and Sawyer Bennett kicks off the Seattle series with the perfect blend of danger, suspense, and second-chance romance. Code Name: Ember had me hooked from the start and kept me turning pages and pressing play until the very end. I was so lucky to get an ARC and an ALC copy of this book from Sawyer and the Author Agency.
Tessa Ward is the kind of investigative reporter who chases the stories everyone else is afraid to touch. Cole is a former military operative turned protector who brings all the “touch her and die” energy I love. When danger puts Tessa in his path again, old feelings, undeniable chemistry, and unfinished business come rushing back.
I loved watching these two work together while trying to fight the pull between them. The Jameson Force team added that extra layer of realism and made the suspense feel even more immersive. Fast-paced, emotional, and packed with tension, this was everything I want from a romantic suspense and something that Sawyer does so well.
🎧 Audiobook Review: Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster absolutely delivered. Their narration captured the emotions, chemistry, and tension between Cole and Tessa perfectly. They kept me completely invested from beginning to end.
Cole and Tessa are two absolute badasses, and their journey was one wild, sexy, dangerous ride. I devoured this one in just a day!
Tropes:
Second Chance Romance
Romantic Suspense
Protective Hero
Touch Her and Die
Ex-Military MMC
Forced Proximity
Strong FMC
Who-Done-It Mystery
Action & Adventure Romance
Code Name: Ember is the first book in the series of Jameson Force Seattle. I have not read the other series and definetly want to now!
This is the story of Cole and Tessa and is a second chance romance with suspense.
Both characters have dangerous jobs which is one of the reasons they broke up in the first place, but when your ex is the only person you know that can keep you safe, you call him!
There were a few times during the book (toward the end) that I wanted to shake Tessa! I felt she was putting others in harms way without regard to anyone except herself. I get it, I really do, she's a investigative reporter, but when you're being protected, don't go leaving and sneaking out to meet with the COO of the company you are trying to bring down? She is a very intelligent woman but this scenario made me feel she was gullible. But it was all needed to get to the most intense scenes of the book and really cement their feelings for each other.
Aside from that, the connection between her an Cole was fantastic. Neither one stopped loving the other while they were broken up, they just had to figure out how to stay safe without losing who they were as individuals and while still doing the jobs they love.
I really enjoyed the whole story, from uncovering corruption, to saving lives. I liked how the entire team at Jameson Force was involved with Tessa's story and how they all worked together to get the facts so she could complete her article and bring in law enforcement. Can't wait to see more of them in the books to come.
I was lucky enough to receive both a ARC and the audio version where Stephen Dexter and Kelsey Navarro Foster really brought Cole and Tessa alive!
