Dr. Grace Robertson has a MD, a thriving practice, and a terrible track record in love. When her friends hire a matchmaker to fix her dating disasters, Grace is skeptical. Then she literally crashes into Luke Sloane - gorgeous, charming, and definitely not on her matchmaker's approved list. The chemistry is instant. The connection is real. The secret he's keeping? That might ruin everything.
A steamy, second-chance romance about taking risks, building trust, and discovering that the best love stories are the ones you never saw coming.
The author and editor lives in Texas with her husband and children. She enjoys trying to stay in shape, sporadically cooking, reading (still), writing, and working on her blog. She is eternally grateful to the woman who donated a kidney to her over 8 years ago and continues to advocate for organ donation as much as she can.
This is my first time reading a book from this author and it did not disappoint!
The book tells the story of Grace and Luke who have been successful professionally, but not so successful in the romance department. Grace, having one failed marriages and some bad dates goes to a matchmaker at her friend’s insistence as she really wants to find love again.
Luke in the other hand, is an entrepreneur who has never wanted marriage or to fall in love. But a literal run-in with Grace has him questioning his feelings on love and marriage.
I enjoyed that both characters are older, which added to the story because they both already had life experiences and it added depth to the characters. Their chemistry and instalove was undeniable!
This book is a relaxing read that I looked forward to picking up every evening before bed.
This story was an instalove romance and I enjoyed that both characters are older and have gone through life experiences. At the beginning of the book, both characters have past trauma that hasn't really been healed. Our FMC, Grace, is a divorcee who seems to keep making poor relationship decisions, to the point where her friends force her to see a professional matchmaker. Luke, a mysterious hot stranger Grace bumps into in the lobby after her first session with the matchmaker.
The chemistry between the characters felt genuine, and I really liked how both characters were open about their past and fears with one another. The story was easy to follow and I enjoyed watching both characters grow into the people they wanted to be. Thank you the ARC opportunity.
ARC review An easy read which I managed to finish within a day. This books looks at alot of past trauma which the two main characters need to overcome to be able to actually make it through their relationship. A good choice if you are looking for a romance overcoming certain hurdles
I received an ARC for ‘The Match Game’ but this is my honest review. When I started this book I had never read anything by this author. I got a few chapters into the book and had to stop. Not because it wasn’t good, but because I felt like I would enjoy it more if I went back and read ‘The Late Match’ which is Evan (Grace’s ex husband) and Mac’s story first. While ‘The Match Game’ can technically be read as a stand alone Grace plays such a big role in Mac and Evan’s story and you get more background on her and her son Gabe, that I feel makes this book even better if you go into it knowing that.
After finishing ‘The Late Match’ I dove back into this book and I have to say I really enjoyed it! Grace’s friends are worried about her and ready for her to find her person, so they set her up with a matchmaker. After meeting with the matchmaker Grace bumps into (literally) Luke in the office lobby. Luke is the matchmaker (Harmony’s) brother and is immediately smitten with Grace. When he goes up to see his sister he finds out that Grace is a client of hers.
Their story was so great and they had so much chemistry. I loved seeing Grace be adored like she should be after being in a marriage where she wasn’t. There was of course conflict with Grace not telling Luke that she was seeing a matchmaker and Luke knowing and not telling her that the matchmaker was his sister. That left underlying tension throughout story that you could feel building.
I thought it all came together well when the secret finally came out. My only complaint was I felt like it was drawn out a bit too long at the end. There were several chapters of them both re-hashing the issue with their friends, in their mind and with eachother and that felt a bit repetitive. But overall, a really exceptional story. And bonus that the couple was in their 40s. As a woman who is in that age group it is so nice to read about second chances at love and a story that doesn’t involve people who are 18-25!
And finally- the spice! The couple had great chemistry and the spice definitely reflected that. I thought the author did a great job including the spicy scenes as well as having some spicy scenes happen off page and just be implied. So it didn’t feel like that took over the whole book, but you definitely had enough to feel satisfied!
• 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 - - mature romance - matchmaker setup - divorced heroine - emotional healing - healthy relationship - found family - second chance - insta love
• 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 - Before I start screaming about how much I loved this, let me tell you what this story is about. The Match Game follows Grace, a successful, divorced woman in her forties who thinks she already had her big love story and lost it. She agrees to be matched, not because she believes in fairy tales anymore, but because she is tired of chaos. Then she meets Luke. Calm, steady, intentional Luke. What starts as a structured match slowly turns into something deeper, softer, and unexpectedly powerful. This story is not about dramatic cheating or toxic obsession. It is about healing. It is about unlearning trauma. It is about choosing peace over passion that burns too fast. I absolutely adored this book. The emotional maturity in this romance felt so refreshing. Grace is layered, flawed, strong, and scared at the same time. She is not a perfect heroine. She overthinks, she self sabotages, she waits for things to fall apart. And that made her feel so real to me. Luke is the kind of hero that makes me feel safe just by reading his scenes. He is steady. He communicates. He does not play games. The way he chooses Grace again and again without ego was honestly beautiful. The tension was soft but intense. The intimacy felt earned, emotional, and grown. This was not teenage love. This was adult love. The kind that says I see you and I am staying. What I loved most is how the story shows that healthy does not mean boring. Stability can be sexy. Peace can be powerful. Grace learning to accept love without fighting it made my heart so full. This book felt warm, grounding, and empowering. It reminded me that second chances at love can be softer and stronger at the same time. Thank you luna literary for the free ARC.
Title: The Match Game Author: D.W. Brooks Genre: Contemporary Romance Release Date: March 12, 2026 Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice Level: 2/5 🌶️🌶️
Themes: Second Chance, Instalove, Opposites Attract
I want to preface this review by saying that this is the 2nd book in the Meet Your Match series, though you don’t need to read the 1st book in order to understand this one. This is the first book I’ve read from this author. I was drawn toward this book personally because I’m from the city that the story is based in and has some involvement with sports. I think that this book represents the city accurately. Sports are mentioned, but it’s not too heavy on it.
Both of the main characters had trauma with relationships they’ve had in the past and it shows throughout the book, but even being opposites in terms of employment and life styles, they work well together. There were a lot of characters to get to know and their dynamics with the main characters could’ve been more fleshed out.
This was a quick read, but I love how compact the story was even so. I enjoyed reading it as it opened me up to more genres of romance books that I don’t usually reach for. I liked that it showed how different life hardships can end up leading you to new experiences that you might’ve not been searching for, but may have needed.
I received an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) in exchange for an honest review. These thoughts are entirely my own! Thank you to D.W. Brooks and Luna Literary for choosing me to receive an early copy! (:
The Match Game by D.W. Brooks is a sweet, easy-to-read romance about a divorced mother and doctor in her 40s who literally bumps into the man who ends up sweeping her off her feet.
I liked seeing a mature FMC like Grace, who has a solid head on her shoulders, a fun group of friends who have her back, and a family that loves her completely. While her son isn’t featured often, he influences her major life decisions, which I really respected. All of these layers helped bring the story to life. After a difficult past relationship and a string of doozy dates, Grace decides to lean into her feelings and enjoy the whirlwind romance that suddenly enters her life.
The MMC, Luke, is a wealthy entrepreneur who has never wanted love or a long-term relationship, until he meets Grace. Watching him completely fall and go all-in on spoiling her with grand gestures and luxurious experiences made for a fun reading adventure.
The pacing felt a little uneven for me at times. Some scenes moved quickly, leaving me wanting a bit more explanation, while a few parts felt repetitive. Since I read an advanced copy, some of these details may be adjusted in the final version.
Overall, this was a cute, light romance with a satisfying happily ever after. If you enjoy billionaire romances, grand gestures, and whirlwind love stories with mature characters, this one will likely be right up your alley.
Thank you to Happily Ever After PR for providing an advanced copy. These thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received an ARC for this book, so I want to thank DW Brooks and Happily Booked for sending it to me.
In this book, both of our characters are in their forties, so they have more life experience, more maturity, and they don’t want to waste time on relationships that aren’t going anywhere.
After a failed marriage and countless bad dates, Grace is feeling lonely. Her ex-husband never loved her the way she deserved, her son is far away, and she is just trying to get by.
Luke is living his best life. He’s a billionaire, his company is thriving, his dog is adorable, and he’s not interested in any relationship. But he’s also lonely, and as soon as he meets Grace, the pull he feels is undeniable.
After agreeing to be part of a program to find her a boyfriend, the last thing Grace expected was to actually meet someone she connected with—but that’s exactly what happens with Luke.
After a few amazing dates, they start falling in love. They have honest conversations about their relationship and their futures, but they are both keeping a secret.
A secret that could easily have been solved if they had just talked. The miscommunication between them was so basic, yet they kept procrastinating until it was almost too late.
They say things they don’t mean, their words sometimes hurt, but in the end, the love they have for each other is stronger than anything else.
I’m giving this book 4 ⭐️ because I expected a bit more maturity from them, but overall, I really enjoyed it. 🩺🔬
This story follows a 42-year-old FMC who finds herself starting over after a divorce, raising her 13-year-old, and wondering if she’ll ever experience that once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. After a string of disappointing relationships, she’s nearly given up on the idea. Determined to help, her friends step in and set her up with a professional matchmaker—hoping it might finally lead her to the right person. What she doesn’t realize is that love is about to find her in the most unexpected way.
The 44-year-old MMC has spent years avoiding serious relationships. Watching his father’s betrayal of his mother at a young age left him with deep trust issues and a reluctance to settle down. Because of that past, he’s built walls around his heart that he’s never really tried to take down.
The two quite literally run into each other, and their connection sparks almost immediately. But both of them are carrying secrets that unexpectedly intertwine—and those secrets quickly threaten to come between them as their relationship begins to grow.
I truly enjoyed this plot. It was refreshing to read about a midlife romance and a second chance at love, rather than the typical younger characters. Watching their relationship develop, along with the emotional baggage they both had to work through, made the story feel real and engaging.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable read with a heartfelt storyline, and I loved seeing love bloom when both characters least expected it.

This was a blind 1st date for me & I really had such a lovely time you guys! Stepping into this medical San Fran bubble was honestly refreshing because the protagonists were my age. Take away the billionaire status, divorced with a pre teen son and I felt like I was Grace emotionally. It’s mayhem out there for single 40 yr olds looking for good men who don’t wonder but know & who put in the effort whilst also having fun.
Those 1st dates? I had that with my ex and it wasn’t weird or scary, it was 2 adults who had layers and trauma & we’re not afraid of sharing it. I liked how emotionally inclusive this book felt, the ease of daily conversations & falling fast & hard when you might think you’re not going to find that one person, no matter what you do.
It’s about letting destiny do its job and enjoying your loved ones. It’s a story about loyalty & friendships, family and dedication, devotion & commitment. I’m not always a fan of the insta love trope but only in scenarios like these: where nothing was off the table and our lovers got raw and brutally honest with each other.
Luke is confident player who found his person and decided he didn’t want to play the game anymore. Showing up for Grace and living each day to the fullest, blending multiple families who all love each other in different ways.
Thank you Happily Booked & DW Brooks for letting me into their world, I think I’ll stay a while and explore more 🖤
Thank you to D. W. Brooks and Luna Literary Management for the opportunity to read this fun story.

Grace reluctantly agrees to get friends’ wild plan to hire a matchmaker for her, but will a chance encounter give her everything she's been looking for?
Luke Sloane loves his bachelor life. Lives his mom and his sister. He wouldn't change a thing until fate got him in the face with a bashful woman. She is smart, funny, down to earth. He finally felt that once-in-a-lifetime lightning strike. The problem? She's his sister's client, Grace. How long can he keep Grace from finding out he's related to her matchmaker? What happens when she does?
I loved the concept of funding love through a matchmaker only for fate to intervene. Brooks created characters that were so realistic, with honesty to God struggles. She handled extremely sensitive topics with kindness, and, though this is fiction, in a very realistic manner. The secret keeping from both characters had me in a tizzy until I realized I'd do the same thing. The frustration doesn't last long and the giggles these two have are worth it!

I received an advanced copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The above opinions are my own.
The Match Game by D.W. Brooks is a heartfelt, mature romance that proves love can find you again when you least expect it. Dr. Grace Robertson is a layered, relatable heroine whose tendency to overthink her "dating disasters" makes her journey toward healing feel incredibly authentic. When she quite literally crashes into Luke Sloane, a former NFL player with his own history of relationship trauma, the chemistry is instant. Their story is less about teenage passion and more about the power of choosing peace and unlearning past traumas, prioritizing communication over games. While the conflict regarding the matchmaker secret felt slightly drawn out toward the end and I wished some side characters were more fleshed out, the emotional depth of the central connection more than made up for it. The spice is handled with a perfect balance of intense scenes and tasteful implications, ensuring the focus remains on their growing trust. As an older woman, I found it incredibly empowering to see a high-chemistry, "seasoned" romance where stability is treated as sexy. This is a grounded, exceptional read that serves as a beautiful reminder that second chances are often softer and stronger than the first.
It’s a rare thing to meet someone you feel an instant connection with, and extremely weird to meet them leaving an appointment with a matchmaker.
Grace is feeling tired of one disastrous date after another after attending the wedding of her ex-husband to his long term love. She is happy for them, she just wants to be happy herself but seems to attract losers. So her friends introduce her to Harmony, a matchmaker, and though sceptical, she goes to the first appointment. As she’s leaving she runs into, quite literally, Luke and she gives him her number.
Luke is also instantly pulled towards Grace and the two start dating and quite quickly, it becomes serious. However, Luke is Harmony’s brother and discovers Grace is a client, but he doesn’t tell her, and Grace hides the fact she’s seeing a matchmaker.
I don’t like the term instalove, it’s never usually quite accurate. This wasn’t love at first sight, but it was a fast-burn relationship. Luke and Grace quickly found that this was a relationship they both wanted but the longer it lasted, the harder it became for both of them to admit to the secrets they were hiding.
I found the third act break-up quite hard, they were both quite brutal towards each other and found myself questioning how they would come back from the harsh things they said to each other.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Match Game by D.W. Brooks completely won me over. This is such a heartfelt, grown up romance that proves love can absolutely find you again when you least expect it.
Dr. Grace Robertson is smart, successful, and unlucky in love. When her friends bring in a matchmaker to fix her dating disasters, she is skeptical. Then she quite literally crashes into Luke Sloane, a former NFL player who is definitely not on her approved list. Their chemistry is instant, but what makes this story shine is the emotional depth behind that spark.
Luke is protective and charming, but he carries secrets that threaten everything they are building. I loved the opposites attract dynamic between a grounded doctor and a retired athlete. Their connection feels real, mature, and layered with the kind of vulnerability that only comes after heartbreak.
With second chances, found family, and over forty characters learning to trust again, this story feels hopeful and authentic. It is steamy, emotional, and full of heart. The Match Game is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best love stories are the ones you never planned for.
I really enjoyed this one. There’s just something so refreshing about a romance featuring characters who are a little older and already established in their lives. It added such a grounded, real-world depth that made the story feel even more meaningful.
One of my favorite aspects was the portrayal of healthy co-parenting and positive relationships between divorced parents. Everyone was genuinely trying to do right by the kids, and that emotional maturity made the story stand out in the best way.
I also loved that neither main character had to sacrifice their career or family life to make the relationship work. Instead, their love story felt like a true partnership; supportive, balanced, and rooted in mutual respect.
The extended family and friend group were woven in seamlessly, adding warmth and richness to the story without ever feeling overwhelming. And the romance? A perfect slow burn. The tension and build-up were chef’s kiss, but it still delivered on that spark of initial attraction.
Everything came together so naturally, and it was such a satisfying journey watching these two find their way to each other.
This was an enjoyable read with just enough tension to keep me turning the pages.
After a divorce and a string of disappointing relationships, Grace’s friends hire a matchmaker to help her find the right person. Meanwhile, Luke - shaped by watching his father’s infidelity - has committed to never becoming that man, which leaves him emotionally guarded and reluctant to settle down. But a chance meeting - literally running into each other - changes everything.
Grace and Luke’s chemistry was undeniable. Their connection develops quickly, but I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow.
I also loved that this story features characters in their 40s. It’s always refreshing to see love stories centered around the 40+ club.
Of course, there are secrets…Luke doesn’t tell Grace that the matchmaker is his stepsister, and Grace doesn’t tell Luke she’s working with one. When the truth comes out, it threatens everything they’ve built.
This was my first DW Brooks book, and it definitely won’t be my last.
Thanks to DW Brooks and Happily Booked PR for the arc. This is my honest review.
Felt refreshing to read a romance centered on characters in their forties, with all the maturity and life experience that brings. Grace, a divorced doctor and mom, has been through her share of heartbreak and bad dates, so when her friends push her toward a matchmaker, she agrees more out of practicality than hope. Then she literally bumps into Luke, and everything changes.
What I loved most was how grounded their relationship felt. Grace is layered, strong, smart, but also vulnerable and prone to overthinking. Luke, a former NFL player turned businessman, is steady. He doesn’t play games, and his calm presence balances Grace’s doubts beautifully.
The secret about the matchmaker added tension, it kept me invested in how they would finally work through it.
The book explored themes like healing from past trauma, learning to trust again very well.
I had the opportunity to read this as an ARC. This is also my first book by this author.
I liked the leads are middle age and addressing their past traumas for healing. I enjoyed the plot line and details put into it and the settings. I feel like the first half was better paced than the last half. And the 3rd act break up was set up so well, that the actual conflict that caused it seemed a bit like a stretch for me personally. But that can be on me for not being able to connect to her trauma from my personal experiences. However, the phrase "intelligental asymmetry" was getting so over used for me too, that it passed repetitive and began it feel like it was a weak character excuse to make her feel better, taking me out of the story a little bit.
Tropes: instalove, second chance at romance, miscommunication
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book had me pretty invested in it from start to finish. It’s an instalove type of romance between characters I really wanted to find a happy ending. I adore stories that are centered on older characters. Grace and Luke have both been through some things and it’s colored their lives. Grace struggles and goes to see a matchmaker in an attempt to remedy a life of bad decisions. Luke is a man she bumped in to while there. There’s chemistry and connection that flows off the page between these two. But there’s also miscommunication and tension. Over all the story was intriguing and had me turning the page to see what would happen next. And oh man the spice was perfect. It really showed the deep connection between them. And the ending was exactly what they needed. It was very satisfying to read.
I loved this grown up romance! The characters backstories were rich and developed. The love was true and powerful. What else could you want from a romance?
Fun and easy to read romance. This book is written through dual PoVs so you can see them both fall in love together.
Grace is a doctor, divorcee, and mother of a 13 year old boy. Lucien (Luke) is a former NFL player turned part owner of a multi-billion dollar medical device company. Grace's friends set her up with a matchmaker to get her out of her bad dating trend. She literally bumps into Luke on the way of the meeting with the matchmaker.
Their relationship is so sweet and Luke treats her like a Princess/Queen. They keep secrets from each other though that could break them apart.
The only criticism I have is the overuse (in my opinion) of the word asymmetry in the last few chapters. It grinded on my last nerve.
Thank you D.W. Brooks and Luna Literary Management for the eARC.
The Match Game by D.W. Brooks is a heartfelt, mature romance about finding love when you least expect it. Dr. Grace Robertson, a successful doctor who struggles with dating, reluctantly agrees to let a matchmaker help her after a series of romantic disasters. Her plans change when she literally crashes into Luke Sloane, a retired NFL player who is completely outside her usual type. Despite their instant chemistry, Luke’s secrets threaten the relationship they are beginning to build. With themes of second chances, vulnerability, and found family, the story delivers a hopeful and emotional reminder that the best love stories are often unplanned.
Thank you to the author and Happily Booked PR for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Match game by D.W, Brooks is the story of Grace and Luke.
Both in their 40s, Grace and Luke literally bump into each other in the lobby of the building where his sister works as a matchmaker and sparks (and cellphones) fly.
But they each have secrets: Luke’s is that his sister is her matchmaker and Grace’s is that she’s accepted a couple of dates since they started seeing each other.
The closer they become, the harder it is to come clean and the more they fall for each other.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Grace and Luke are both mature adults and aside from withholding information from one another, they both conduct themselves well.
Fun novel about starting over again and learning how to trust and be trusted.
This is book two of the Meet Your Match series, and while it can be read as standalone (like I did), it would be best read in order due to spoilers….
This was instalove in a novel. Grace and Luke literally run into each other, and they’re immediately intrigued. The issue? She’s just hired a matchmaker, and he has a connection to her.
This was spicy, had great relationship development, and one doozy of a third-act breakup. Who would have thought that two people in their 40’s could be so inept at communication - especially when you consider their careers…
The chemistry was amazing, the general communication about their pasts and fears was great (even though they revert towards the end regarding their secrets…), and I thoroughly enjoyed this.
For romantics like myself, stories like this make my heart warmer day by day. Both Grace and Luke have past traumas regarding their love lives. We get to see them evolve from being on the defensive alone to thriving together.
I thoroughly enjoyed their love story; however, towards the end, I noticed some inconsistencies. In the beginning, it's stated that Grace’s friends hire the matchmaker. Later in the story, it’s said that Grace sought out and hired her instead. I read an early draft, some of which may have been sorted out before the final release.
I really enjoyed The Match Game by D.W. Brooks! This was such a fun, engaging read that pulled me in right away. The characters had great chemistry and I loved watching their story unfold. The pacing kept me hooked, and I found myself flying through the pages to see what would happen next.
If you love romance with emotional moments and a satisfying build, this one is definitely worth checking out. I’m already excited to continue the series!
💞 Tropes:• Matchmaking / dating setup• Opposites attract• Slow burn• Forced proximity• Found family vibes
This was my first book by DW Brooks. I didn’t realize until I started reading it that it was the second in a series. It was enough of a standalone that I wasn’t confused but I do feel like there would be more information about Mac and Evan that could have cleared a couple questions up had I read Late Match first. That being said, I really enjoyed The Match Game. It’s not often you find a book with older characters so it felt more relatable. Luke and Grace were just so well matched, and I’m glad despite the conflict they were able to resolve it and end up exactly how they were supposed to. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of my favorite things about reading romance is seeing love stories centered on characters who have already lived a little—and The Match Game really leans into that beautifully.
Grace is not someone chasing a fairytale. She is a successful, divorced, single mom, confident in most areas of her life, but her dating track record says otherwise. She reluctantly agrees to try a matchmaker, and then literally runs right into Luke Sloane—a charming former NFL player who wasn’t part of the “plan”. Their connection sparks quickly, but the story also explores the baggage both bring into the relationship.
What I liked most about this book is how it explores trust in relationships when you’re older and a little wiser. Grace isn’t naive about love anymore, which makes the emotional stakes feel real when secrets start to surface. The story doesn’t shy away from difficult moments—it explores whether vulnerability and honesty can actually hold a relationship together when things get messy.
In the end, this felt like a thoughtful romance about second chances and the courage it takes to love again. If you enjoy stories with emotionally mature characters, meaningful conversations, and relationships that grow with intention, this one is definitely worth checking out.
Grace is a doctor that has been divorced for some time and she has a son. She has an awful record in the love department and decides to use a match maker. Enter Luke in to the equation, when they crash into each other. Luke is a retired NFL football player. The journey of watching them learn each other was sweet. Luke treats her so well and you can just see he wants the best for her and her son. Both of the MC are older and mature which was refreshing to read. Thank you to DW Brooks and Luna Literacy for the ARC
Grace and Luke never saw it coming. Grace was getting over a pretty much sham of a marriage, and Luke never really wanted serious with anyone. Then BAM literally. They run into each other in Harmony the matchmakers office and it’s also Luke’s sister. Grace is also Harmony’s client. They both fall head over heels without knowing the others secrets. When things finally come to a head, Grace realizes it’s a relationship worth saving. What an awesome story!!! I really liked it!
