Mary Rooney Armand’s 35-day study in “Uniquely Made: Understanding and Embracing your Identity in Christ” will be a great comfort to Christians struggling with sin and worry and fear and “trials of various kinds” (James 1:2-4). Hope abounds in this study. Armand hopes her readers learn to “allow His truth to take root in your heart, and embrace the freedom of living out your unique identity in Him.” The “Him” is Jesus Christ. Armand tackles a wide variety of “troubles” in life: sin, depression, sadness, loneliness, and other struggles with our identity. For believers, sin has been paid for and acquitted through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ; for the other struggles of life, there is peace and hope from Jesus Christ, whose Holy Spirit and Word of truth (the Bible) comfort. Older biblical theologians and pastors called this “identity” in Christ “union” with Christ, which is by God’s grace and received by true faith. The Heidelberg Catechism calls this the eternal “comfort” of belonging “body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ” (Q&A 1). There is also very practical advice about living life well. One good example, from Day Twelve: “With an identity rooted in Christ, we recognize that all we have—our time, treasure, and love—flows from Him and belongs to Him. We are stewards, not owners. This frees us to live generously, just as Mary did.” The reader will also benefit from the “Reflection” sections of this devotional that give opportunity for further study in the Bible, journaling, and writing answers to exploratory questions. There is an accompanying video series to this book which I did not watch as part of this review.

Opinion:
Mary Rooney Armand’s book, “Uniquely Made” would be comforting to Christians who are struggling with serious questions about their identity, their sufferings, and their purpose in life. It would also be useful evangelistically to present much of the gospel and hope of salvation to unbelievers. I have theological disagreements with Armand, as would many others; though there would be many other Christians who would agree with her theology. To be more specific, Armand is light on sin and its effects on the human race and creation. Our identity in Christ is not something that we can choose, nor can anyone choose for Christ; it is a gift of God’s grace, and a sovereign work that He does to change our hearts and our thinking and bring us into union with Jesus Christ by true faith, which He also gives. Undoubtedly, even unbelievers could find inspiration and hope in these pages, but they would not come face-to-face with the living Jesus Christ strictly from this book. Curious and searching unbelievers would have to go to the Bible verses that are cited in this devotional to get the fuller picture. I do like the self-analyzing questions in the “Reflection” section of each day, though some questions are better than others. Theological differences aside, I would still recommend this book because I believe that Christians could certainly benefit from these devotional readings.

In “Uniquely Made” Mary Rooney Armand digs deeply into the roots of the things which cloud our identity in Christ or block us from living it. She exposes the lies we tend to believe and the Scriptural truths which overturn those lies. She gently encourages us to live up to the full potential God has placed within us and planned for us.
I love the deep-dive questions at the end of each day’s reading which help us apply the learnings.
