Nissai awakens to a new reality. His body is failing him, his mind cries out for vengeance, and his world is changed forever. While everything around him falls to ruin, one thing remains
Nissai will protect his family.
Whatever the cost.
--- This is an MM (Male/Male) fantasy novel. It contains themes such slow burn, forced marriage, cultural differences, political intrigue, loss of status, and scenes intended for a mature audience. Recommended for readers who enjoy complex relationships, power struggles, and stories of self-discovery against all odds.
The cliffhanger ending of last book was once more solved very quickly and without much fuss. It could have easily been the plot of the whole book.
But no, killing of Ishan and Rossa wasn’t enough. We gotta kill off The Rat and Yva.
And I was like, so help me god, don’t kill of Dara. But nope, he gets killed off in a split second too, just like all the trauma porn deaths in this series.
The romance was so flat in this book, too. We get one sex scene, and they spend most of the book apart or with Nissai deathly ill.
As for the ending, I’d be pressed to call that a HFN, let alone a HEA.
I loved the first 3 books, book 4 was disappointing, but this is trash. Let’s just kill off everyone and leave things up in the air.

The ending was depressing yet romantic. Amazing series! I enjoyed Nissai’s transformation from an innocent prince to a serial killer/king. If we get spin-offs I need Valadrin and Nissa to both be alive!
This was a series of five books and each book somehow kept getting better. I honestly wish she had 50 more books because I don’t want to run out of Nissai and Valadrins story.
This story was so beautiful and so intriguing that I kept finding excuses to pick it back up. What really stood out to me, though, was how true every character stayed from beginning to end. No one suddenly became someone else just to fit the story. Every reaction, every decision, every emotion felt exactly like a real person would respond. The way she writes human emotions and relationships is just incredible. Nothing felt exaggerated or fake.
By the time I finished, I just sat there thinking, “Wow.” Not many books do that to me anymore.
If you’re on the fence about reading this one, just do it. You’re seriously missing out if you pass on it. This author is beyond talented, and I am desperate for Zorans books. I can’t wait to return to Nissa’s world. The push and pull, the angst at times and the delicious reconciliations. I only wished Val was a tad more asshole-ish at times because he forgave his Nissa too quickly. Oh sweet Dara! The wise warrior! That’s all I am going to say. I have never managed to not be bored or not skip a few pages in a series this long but this book you will not be able to blink! Ugh I wish I could reread it for the first time again. Ok Silencio, here I come for all your other books. I see you have written my fav genre the mafia series and 90% of books with mob themes disappoint me since most authors can’t capture the real dark brutality of that world and end up writing fluff silly pieces that make me want to gag. So far very few have done it with among them Voinov on top! But I have a feeling I am going to add to my list of FAV authors for the genre. 💕
Overall loved this series, it was full of drama which was both fun and incredibly stressful and engaging. I loved Valadrin so much, and watching his character growth. The characters all had depth, and even when they made frankly stupid choices, they were in character and I could see and understand why they made the choices they did (even if I wanted to shake some sense into them). I adored Valadrin and Dara the most (sorry Nissai I love you too). There were quite a few things in previous books that affected things in the future or made more sense when we read further in the series, and I really enjoyed that. The last book was nearly a 5 star, but one death felt a bit unnecessary to me and I just really wanted better for them. I’m very much looking forward to more books set in this world.
Incredibly dramatic but equally entertaining, I only take issue with the sheer amount of character deaths and their dubious necessity in my eyes. Still, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of this world, regardless of how upset I am by a particular turn of events.
