To Break Such a Bond

Rate this book
"I don't want to scare you," he said, "but if you want, I can prove it." She stuck her chin out, straightened her shoulders.

"I'm not afraid," she said. "Prove it."

1980s, London

Val has spent decades carefully controlling his desires – the desire for blood, and for human connection. The past has taught him that indulging in one will lead to losing control over the other, and he can't let himself hurt anyone else. So he stays in the shadows, the world slipping by as he watches – until the day Margot strikes up a conversation with him. He becomes attached to her before he can stop himself, and in a moment of weakness he invokes magic that binds them together – the supposedly eternal, unbreakable kind of bond.

Finding a way to release Margot from the bond means reestablishing ties with vampire society that he'd long ago severed and risking the solitude he's come to see as his salvation – not to mention trying to explain all of this to a human who thought she was just engaging in a little flirtatious banter. But Val won't let his own foolishness ruin Margot's life, even if that means he has to do the one thing he fears the most – letting someone else into his world.

You know what? Yeah. I liked it.
I started out iffy about this, because of the pacing mainly.
I do enjoy a fast-paced story, and this is that.
It starts off strong, and pretty much immediately jumps into the plot- no time wasted. I was really wanting to get more insight into the main characters as individuals, and to have some time to connect with them (and see some development between them).

BUT,
with that being said, this got better as it moved along.
I still wouldn’t say i felt super connected to either character, but I found it pretty enjoyable anyway.
The story is is pretty simple, in writing and in premise, but i do not care.
I EAT UP a vampire romance, and i EAT UP the whole magical bond, forced proximity thing this has going on.
and the ending? Girl. I love that.
ALSO those parts of Val having to be to fully, over-the-top honest with Margot about this thoughts? Yep. Yep. Yep. This is what I LIKE to see in the vampire love interest.
More of that.
Like why am I giggling and hiding behind my ipad right now?

Anyway, I like it.
It’s not perfect but its good enough for me and my reading obsessions. A win is a win.

Thank you to Booksirens and author Mallory Wilde for providing me with the eARC of “To Break Such a Bond”.

My main complaint about this book? I wish it had been longer! I really enjoyed it! I honestly can't believe I'm even saying that because I have so many books on my TBR that I am always "on to the next"… but I really enjoyed Val and Margot's story.

I realized after reading that "To Break Such a Bond" is just a novella… but I still blame Mallory Wilde (the author) for making me want more :) Despite being under 200 pages, I thought a good amount happened, and I really liked how things seemed to come full circle by the end.

I judged a book by it's cover and thought this would end up being really dark… but was presently surprised by many sweet and funny moments. Mallory Wilde was able to make a vampire (Val) surprisingly human, and I was honestly rooting for Val in all aspects of his life!

The fact that this novella was able to pack that much story into just 167 pages and it actually flow at such an easy pace amazes me. It never felt rushed or like we were missing parts of the story. I adored the MMC Val. He’s a sensitive soul: never wanting to do harm to anyone. I would have loved more of his back story and that would have bumped this up to a 5-star for me. We were given little bits of information which was understandable considering this is a novella. Margot was a great FMC and I loved how she challenged the reserved vampire to open up and speak his mind more.

It is really refreshing to read a love story from the MMC POV only, normally it is either FMC or duel/multi in the books I have read. The story was beautiful, so emotional, hit all the feels. I love this.

I also loved the additional chapters from the FMC POV whichis made availablein a separate book, I will add my review of this on Goodreads separately when it goes live.
