Sometimes Cupid shows up exactly when—and how—you least expect him in this deliciously witty romance from #1 Amazon and USA Today bestselling author Trilina Pucci.

Years ago, during a college production of Romeo and Juliet, Rory and Oliver shared one unforgettable stage kiss before fate pulled them apart. Now, while drowning her Valentine’s Day sorrows at brunch, she spots her former Romeo, wearing nothing but gold shorts and wings, playing Cupid for the lovelorn masses. Their chemistry still sizzles, but even with the stars finally aligning, these former leads will need more than Shakespeare’s guidance to turn their second chance into a true romance.

Trilina Pucci’s A Play for Love is part of The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances, stories for star-crossed lovers and hopeless romantics. They can be read or listened to in one sitting. Let’s do it again.

I didn't like the first half, but the second half with them having an all-day date and everything that came after was really good!

Rory and Oliver got stuck doing a Romeo and Juliet scene in college, sparks flew, but they didn't see each other after that.. Fast forward five years, they meet again in a restaurant, while he's dressed as a Cupid.. It's her last day in New York though, so they decide to spend it together. Will it end the same way it did the last time?

It was sweet and funny, but also a little cringe at times..
The first half was rough, there was too much second-hand embarrassment for me, personally, to handle.. But, their date all around New York, checking things off her list, was really fun. That was my favourite part of the novella and the end was really cute too!!
Overall, I did like Rory and Oliver as a couple, I feel like they worked together well.

This author is new to me and I'll definitely check out her other books!

It’s 2026, and somehow a romance written by a woman, predominantly for women, is still using MeToo and feminism as cheap punchlines

Rory and Oliver met each other in college and kisssd in a class where they had to act out a scene from Romeo & Juliet. They felt chemistry but nothing ever came of it. Years later they reunite when Rory is out at brunch and it's time to see if something could actually happen between them.

This one didn't really work for me a lot of the time. There were feelings mentioned from before they really knew each other, which is fine, but I needed that to be more on the page for their relationship to feel more believable.

I'm glad their reunion was on the page. That part felt sweet and I enjoyed seeing things progress from that point. I also enjoyed the ending quite a bit. But yeah my main issue was the lack of build up at the beginning and I actually found Rory and her friend annoying at the beginning.

Thank you to Amazon and NetGalley for the ARC to honestly review.

sooo i didn’t enjoy the first half at all. however, the second half saved it for me. the date between rory and oliver all around new york was honestly super cute which was the part i enjoyed.

this is a second chance romance of two individuals who shared one unforgettable state kiss during their college production of romeo and juliet. now years later, rory spots her former romeo playing cupid for the lovelorn masses. are the stars finally aligning for these two?

tropes: college acting class, second chance, long distance, awkward meet-cute, short story

3.5/5⭐️ I feel like this one was a bit cheesier than the other ones in this novella series, but still cute.

Rory and Oliver do a Romeo & Juliet scene in their theatre class in college. Sparks fly, but nothing aligns until years later when they see each other again.

Thank you NetGalley, Amazon Original Stories and Trilina Pucci for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was fun but a little too similar with the previous story in this group. With them being back to back - it was just very similar. Both theatre/theatre adjacent, insta-love, second chance.

I didn’t love how the FMC and her friend were talking about the guys in their class but I get it was meant to be funny.

The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances is a series compiled of six romantic novellas written by some of the genres most notable authors. Each love story distinctively stands out on their own with ease whilst staying true to the same cohesive narrative, guaranteeing that there’s something for every reader of the Romance genre to binge and enjoy.

🪽 A Play for Love by Trilina Pucci (5 stars):
A Play for Love is easily my favourite novella within the series thus far as it has delivered on everything that I had been looking for from beginning to end. This was a giddy, feel-good story that felt both earnest and honest in its exploration between two people that missed their chance at love, and whom therefore made sure to take full advantage when their second chance opportunity arose. The witty dialogue and cheesy actions from side-characters left me grinning throughout the entirety of the story to the point that I probably looked insane. The sparks that ignited between Rory and Oliver was undeniable with their keenness to not waste another moment making me want swoon like a cartoon character with hearts in my eyes. Their chemistry felt limitless and their story played out in my mind like a movie.

💌 Accidentally Yours by Christina Lauren (5 stars):
Accidentally Yours was a joyous experience from beginning to end that left me feeling giddy and wanting to kick my feet like a teenager. The magnetic connection and undeniable chemistry between Veronica and Jude felt explosive and instantaneous. I would’ve gladly read a full-length novel surrounding these two fun and witty characters that find themselves realising that sometimes fate intervenes and that their perfect match was existing within the same living quarters. This sweet novella was the perfect story to kickstart this series of original stories, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else awaits from the rest of the authors.

Time Will Tell by Hannah Bonam-Young (5 stars):
Time Will Tell was a beautifully crafted tale that divulged into the themes of grief and loss with apparent love and care. The way that Georgia and Callum connected through their loss and the way their bond was forged by the discovery of a secret love story that deserved to shine in the light decades prior made for a compelling (and ultimately bittersweet) story. The way that the characters manage to balance their grief with banter-filled dynamic left me grinning from one chapter to the next, and I absolutely loved getting to witness the strong bonds that both families share with one another. I adored every aspect of this journey as I once again find myself wishing that I could’ve experienced this concept as a full-length novel, whilst at the same time feeling nothing but satisfaction and joy in how this sweet novella concludes.

🎭 Second Act Romance by Julie Soto (2 stars):
Sadly I didn’t connect with Second Act Romance as deeply as the first two stories despite the electric connection that is shared between the two main characters. For a short romance novella there seemed to be very little emphasis on the romance and more so on the explanation surrounding how a theatre production works and all of the necessary jargon for reader understanding. This would’ve been fine (and more fun to learn about) had the book been longer with more wiggle room in the word count… but ultimately I feel like I was missing opportunity to focus more on the characters as a budding couple as opposed to the build-up towards their current professional lives. I was in awe at the clear passion and enthusiasm that the author imbued into story surrounding the production, but in this circumstance it was unfortunately wasted on me with what I was expecting from the story as a whole. The magnetic final act was what pulled the entire story together for me as both Bex and ‘C.J’ save the production and finally get their chance at the romance that they missed out on eight years prior.

❤️‍🔥 Death to Valentine’s Day by Catherine Cowles (4 stars):
As an avid fan and devout reader of all things Catherine Cowles, Death to Valentine’s Day was yet another strong release that delivered on the swoon-worthy romance paired with the anxiety-spiking high stakes that this author is known for. I will admit that I was a little concerned initially with this story being a novella as somebody who is familiar with the method and approach that Cowles takes to her storytelling. However I was immediately put at ease with the inclusion of the ‘ex boyfriend’s older brother’ inclusion which introduced a seamless and believable connection that I felt like I could grasp with my own two hands. The chemistry between Maia and Decker was undeniable from that very first kiss and I’m truly impressed at how intense their connection reflected through the pages. I am yet again put to shame with my inability to accurately guess the identity of the villain prior to its reveal, but ultimately it’s the not knowing that makes part of the reading experience for me. Catherine Cowles is a tried and true author of mine which is further proven through this fast-paced and unputdownable novella.

🪦 Valentine’s Slay by Navessa Allen (4 stars):
Valentine’s Slay was a fast and thrilling read that had me questioning the direction of the plot (in the best way) until the truth was swiftly unveiled. The opening of the story was an unforgettable introduction that I will be scarce to forget for a very long time with its ability to make me question whether I should be laughing or feeling concerned in response to the circumstances being presented. The connection between both main characters felt effortless from the very beginning and I adored the way that Noah strived to be the best support system for Emma after her harrowing and traumatic experience. The fact that he immediately stepped up and proved to be the perfect partner and her equal whilst expecting nothing in return was wonderful to see, and it doesn’t hurt that he’d been quietly yearning for her on the side since they were in high school. This was my first read by Navessa Allen and it will most definitely not be my last. Maybe it’s finally time that I find out about the hype surrounding Light’s Out after loving Valentine’s Slay.

The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances Collection from Amazon’s Original Stories is a must read novella series centered around Valentine’s Day, star crossed lovers and hopeless romantics.

A Play for Love by Trilina Pucci 2/5 stars
This one unfortunately didn’t really work for me. I can grasp there was a spark in a set-up kiss from a college drama class, but then the situational circumstances seemed too out of reach. You referenced this boy as “Hot Guy”, is a little cringey for me. I didn’t think the characters were cute or funny. I wished I cared, but this one I just didn’t care.

Accidentally Yours by Christina Lauren 4/5 stars
Accidentally Yours was my favorite novella of the bunch. Having a nickname for your attractive neighbor in your apartment complex whom you’ve had fleeting interactions with but never knew his real name you already had a crush on! This was very well written and the pacing was spot on. Veronica bartering for a new computer and desk chair being a non-negotiable was hilarious. The witty banter was entertaining and I could have read 100 more pages before and after of these characters. I highly recommend checking out this novella.

Time Will Tell by Hannah Bonam-Young 3/5 stars
This novella felt like a whole string of very unlikely events in a row but was altogether a wholesome ride. What are the odds you connect across the globe and fall in love with a man who happens to be your grandmother’s ex-girlfriend secret relationships grandson? I always love the email communication back and forth, the structuring is super fun visually!

Second Act Romance by Julie Soto 4/5 stars
Julie Soto gave me what A Play for Love didn’t. I was right there in Bex’s dream state thinking about how handsome Colby J. Turner was and their onstage chemistry. The shrimp tacos food poisoning was funny and also growing up in theater myself and the author everything felt authentic “The show must go on!” No matter what. I’ve never seen Oklahoma! but perhaps now I should!

Death to Valentine’s Day by Catherine Cowles 2/5 stars
I really loved the author’s writing style so I will be checking out her other novels. I’ve always have a knack for the ex-boyfriend’s brother trope. Decker’s character was fleshed out. Maia’s story was in some ways was understood but in others there were some holes in her words and actions. The setting was a little unsettling for me as well as the “bad guy” twist at the end did not make sense. There was nothing foreshadowing to suggest that the killer was who they were. I think this story’s concept would have done better as a full length novel than a novella.

Valentine's Slay by Navessa Allen 4/5 stars
This was my second Navessa Allen title and my preferences mesh very well with her writing style. You’re immediately hooked in to Noah’s perspective and sheer horror to learn an old crush of his whom he was currently finishing burying 6 feet under was buried alive! His care for her was honest and wholesome from the beginning. The bedroom scenes are very explicit which is Navessa’s bread and butter but the pacing is frankly completely believable to me. I enjoyed Noah’s POV and the cute epilogue chapter in Emma’s POV.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for the eARCs of this collection in exchange for my honest review. The covers are so cute and all are a quick, fun read around the holiday for any romance reader!

This one ended up being a shrug-and-sigh listen for me.

The premise itself is solid: Rory and Oliver share a spark back in college after a Romeo & Juliet acting scene, then years later fate throws them back together and asks the big what if? question. I actually kind of enjoyed their on-page reunion—it felt sweet, grounded, and like the story was finally settling into itself. The ending, too, was a highlight..

Unfortunately, getting there was a bit of a slog.

My biggest issue was the lack of emotional buildup early on. We’re told there were strong feelings back in college, but I never quite felt them, which made the romance harder to fully buy into. I needed more on the page to sell me on why this connection lingered for so long.

Rory, as a main character, just didn’t work for me. She was written as very quirky and over-the-top, leaning hard into exaggerated reactions and pop culture references that quickly became distracting. What felt like attempts at humor often landed as cringey and mean instead, and the constant “everything is the worst thing that’s ever happened” energy wore me down—especially in audio format, where that tone is impossible to escape.

There were moments I enjoyed, and I can see how this might work better for readers who love chaotic FMCs and fast, reference-heavy banter. But overall, the style just wasn’t my cup of tea, and I found myself pushing through rather than being pulled along.

Not a total miss, but not one I’d personally revisit. Still, I appreciate the chance to listen early and can see this finding its audience—even if I wasn’t it.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this entire collection!

I really enjoyed this story. Since the characters were actors/in acting class, The book was appropriately broken up into 3 acts. The first act was a little slow but was clearly setting up the main characters Rory and Oliver, so it made sense.

Acts 2 and 3 were great! I laughed out loud so many times, their banter was great and I loved that the book was dual POV. It’s so nice to have, even in a short story! The characters internal monologue also made me laugh.

The way Rory and Oliver found each other again after almost 5 years since their Romeo and Juliet style meet cute in acting class actually had me laughing so hard and was such a fun unique way of it happening!

Once they realize they’ve run into each other again, they spend the whole day together crossing off Rory’s bucket list New York style. She’s moving home to California on Valentine’s Day, they believe they only have one perfect day together. BUT they keep in contact, Oliver holds his cards close to his chest and six weeks later act 3 happens “the happily ever after” and he surprises the hell out of Rory, in the cutest way!

This book and the previous one, second act romance by Julie Soto were both themed around the theater, I did not care for second act romance because it focused too much on the behind the scenes of a stage set, but this one, it was the perfect level of theater for me! I didn’t get confused, I wasn’t bored of the characters, it was just done very well for a normal non theater person to understand.

This was a true rom com to me, light and fluffy! Just what I needed!

Picture It: Valentine's Day, Senior Year. Rory is cringing at the thought of having to be Juliet to ANY of the guys in her class. Enter Oliver, her campus crush... her savior... her Romeo. They share one unforgettable kiss. Years later, they run into one another. Oliver is Cupid, dressed only in gold shorts and wings. Rory is leaving New York tomorrow. Will these star-crossed lovers get their happily ever after?

I just knew from reading the blurb that I was going to love A Play For Love, and I did! The audiobook 100% improves the reading experience. It's not that I wouldn't have liked it if I read the book, but as an audiobook, I was able to experience the story. I was grinning, squealing, jumping up and down in my seat, laughing, talking to the characters... I probably looked insane, but if you can't be insane in your own home...

In the beginning, I wasn't sure I was going to like Rory. She and her friend were both very immature and frankly a little mean. That said, once we got into the story, I was team Roliver! I'm the girl who made a video the night she started seeing her boyfriend, telling the world that I knew from day one that we were going to be married... and we were. This rom-com was right up my alley. I actually want more Rory and Oliver. Please write a sequel for next Valentine's Day! As for A Play For Love, it's a Read It in the biggest way... but if you can, listen to the audiobook. It's perfect!

Note: I received an ALC of this book from NetGalley and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

I have never heard of this author before, but picked this novella up because I received it as an ARC read. I have never DNFd a book before, but I had to finally give up on this one with just pages left. The writing wasn't for me. The author was trying to be funny, but I found it to be too over the top. The FMC really annoyed me. I didn't like how overly dramatic she was. Everything was "the worst day ever." The constant comments made like, "if I have to kiss one of these vermin, I might put cyanide in your cereal" and "I'm calling 911 is an understatement on my emotion" annoyed me. I was hoping Act 2 would get better, but it still flopped for me. The author was trying to be funny with the guy from work taking Rory out to what she thought was a going away party. In reality he was taking her on a date to profess his love for her. The work guy gets super creepy and she is "saved" by Oliver, the Hot guy from college, when he shows up as their adult entertainment dressed in a sexy Cupid outfit. I kept trying to push through this book, but I just couldn't do it. I couldn't get past the FMC and writing. I feel like this novella was also at a disadvantage to be following Julie Soto's novella which was also about missed change second romance involving a theatre aspect and written really well.

Accidentally Yours — Christina Lauren
I liked this one! Fern’s Zoom mishap was hilarious, and seeing her neighborly crush show up was so sweet. The duo can’t do wrong — they were perfect together. The story was fun, charming, and even though it was short, it made me smile the whole time.

Time Will Tell — Hannah Bonam‑Young
This was my favorite. They wrote emails and fell in love, discovering new things about each other before they even met up. I loved watching their connection grow slowly, learning about each other piece by piece. I was so excited for when they would finally meet in person.

Second Act Romance — Julie Soto
I adored this one! The theater setting was so sweet, and I felt like I was backstage with them, watching all the sparks fly. I was on the edge the most, cheering for them the whole time. The story was funny, heartwarming, and full of little moments that made me smile constantly.

A Play for Love — Trilina Pucci
I really liked this one. The college production and brunch setup felt cozy and charming. Watching the characters slowly realize their feelings was fun and romantic. The story made me feel warm and happy while reading.

Death to Valentine’s Day — Catherine Cowles
This one was elegant. The story mixed mystery and romance in a way I liked. I enjoyed following the events and seeing how the characters interacted throughout the story.

Valentine’s Slay — Navessa Allen
This was nice. I liked the playful suspense, and there were moments that made me smile. The story was fun, and the characters kept me engaged from start to finish.

A Play For Love by Trilina Pucci

This was such a super cute love story in novella size. It brought all the giddy happy sweet feelings. Starting when Rory Smith and Oliver Adams are in college preforming Romeo and Juliet for their midterm with a single kiss and young awkward love. Jump ahead 4 years and when the second chance comes along and the undeniably chemistry is still there between them they don’t want to let the chance slip by even when obstacles are in the way. This had me grinning and chuckling throughout the entire audiobook and the end really had me swooning for Oliver and his actions! My first book in The Improbable Meet-Cute:Second Chance collection.

This is my first time reading this author, but after this perfect novella, I’m convinced it won’t be the last.

Out of the four I’ve read so far in this collection, this one is by far my favorite, and it’s hard to imagine it being knocked off the top spot.

I understand the comments saying it’s very similar to the previous one in the collection (the Julie Soto one), and I agree that there are similarities - but for me, this is a much better executed version of the story. I didn’t get the feeling, which often happens with novellas this short, that anything was rushed or that the chemistry between the characters was lacking. Everything here felt just right.

Why did I take off half a star? Honestly, I’m not even sure myself. Last year this would have easily been a full five-star read for me, but this year I’ve decided to be a bit stricter.

All in all, it comes with my absolute recommendation.

Thank you Amazon Original Stories for an arc copy and a chance to read it before the release date.

A Play for Love-The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances Series, #4 (novella)

Trilina Pucci-new to me author 4/5⭐

Published 1/20/26, Read 1/10/26

Rom-Com, Adult Fic, Humor

-penpal romance
-student/actor
-5-year separation
-2nd chance romance
-off page scene

Setting: NY and CA

Summary: A grumpy college student and a not so random "Hot Guy" actor feel a spark performing a Romeo and Juliet scene with a kiss. Five years later neither Rory nor Oliver are where they want to be. After a meet-cute with singing stripped cupids and a growling suitor, they escape together for an unforgettable day in NYC before Rory moves to California. They have a long-distance relationship via text with the hope of a reunion.

Characters:
Rory Smith-college student
Oliver Adams-actor
Cece-Rory's BFF
Benny-Oliver's BFF

My Thoughts: Probably the sweetest ending with Rory and Oliver after their serious long-distance relationship.

The Improbable Meet Cute: Second Chance Collection by Christina Lauren, Hannah Bonam-Young, Julie Soto, Trilina Pucci, Catherine Cowles, and Navessa Allen—Spoiler Free

This was such a fantastic grouping of novellas to read, all revolving around Valentine’s Day. I think they were all quick to draw you in, which is super important for such short stories, and all finished well. A couple of them I could have read full books about, but there’s something fun about just reading a quick novella and have it started and wrapped up.

These range from super sweet (reminiscent of You’ve Got Mail) to 💀 suspenseful romance for fans of the crime podcasts. I loved that while they weren’t connected at all in the character aspect, they all were about some sort of second chance and all had the characters mentioning something specific for that Valentine’s Day.

Overall, these were great and easy reads, perfect for someone who wants to enjoy a quick story (or listen).

This was really cute. Short stories are usually a miss for me, but this one really worked. My only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer because I wasn’t ready to leave these characters yet.

The story is definitely insta-love and love at first sight, but honestly, that’s kind of expected with a shorter format. The pacing was great and the storyline flowed really well. The first half is told from the FMC’s POV, and after the time jump we finally get the MMC’s POV, which was absolutely worth the wait.

The narrators did a great job, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out this was duet narration. Overall, this was a fun time and I definitely recommend picking it up. This was my first book by this author, and I’ll definitely be reading more.

Book 4 done and I’m officially asking myself: why have I never read this author before?!

I’m now fully convinced she has an excellent backlist of spicy/dark romances waiting for me, but this one surprised me in the best way. It was much more cutesy than expected—and honestly, I loved every second. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a bit cringey (the good kind), and this book absolutely leaned into that energy… right down to the iconic VD trousers.

Did I expect a disastrous date featuring a man literally growling and announcing “I’m the alpha now”? No. Did I laugh out loud and immediately think, well that’s a story for the grandkids? Absolutely.

I’m also a total sucker for a clear “she said no” moment—so yes, finger snaps all around for enthusiastic consent 👏. That alone made my heart very happy.

And finally, a personal weakness: put text messages in a book and I’m done for. Instant swooning. Instant emotional attachment. Suddenly I’m in love with both the MMC and the FMC.

Cute, cringey, chaotic Valentine’s perfection—and I’m not mad about it at all. 💘
