The omnibus features all three books in A Story of Sorrow series, and an essay by Daniel J. Volpe on his love of fantasy.
He should be dead, but Sorrow is a hard man to kill
Book 1-Of Flesh and Blood
Left shipwrecked after being sold into slavery, Sorrow once again finds himself on the verge of death. The sudden arrival of a huge sea vessel gives him a glimmer of hope, but this ship belongs to one of his most hated organizations – The Church of the Refining Light.
Book 2-The Unburied
After narrowly escaping prosecution by the Church, Sorrow and his men find themselves looking for work. A brutal conflict has the mercenaries of the world scrambling toward a mountain range known as the Borderlands. And with war comes spoils and plenty of it. But, in those craggy hills, something else lurks, craving death. Something that was unburied and has a taste for human flesh.
Book 3-Fall to the Queen
The city of Graathull has wonders to see. From the tall buildings, to the sprawling Duhson River, it offers something for everyone—especially those seeking flesh and blood. Sorrow knows the city has a love for duels—some for sport, some for death. Sorrow thought his dueling days were over, but he was dead wrong.
"He should be dead, but Sorrow is a hard man to kill."
A Story of Sorrow features all three books in the series along with an essay by Volpe you should definitely read.
I've been wanting to dive back into fantasy as it's been quite a long minute since I've read the genre. So when a splatter fantasy landed in my mailbox, I felt it and knew it was the perfect sign to dive right in. I had already heard great things about these books at various events and whispering of other horror/fantasy lovers and they weren't wrong!
Book 1 - Of Flesh and Blood - gives us an introduction to Sorrow as we feel his strong presence and can tell he's already going to be a favorite, if not THE favorite character of the series. Yes, he's the protagonist, but that doesn't always equate to a favorite character. However, in this case... gimme more!
Book 2 - The Unburied - here I began to become obsessed with Fin and the "wild dog" that he is. Bring forth the monsters, the zombies, the dark magic, fighting, blood on silver and a doozy of a ride to book 3.
Book 3 - Fall to the Queen - welcome to Graathull and Sorrow coming back to his dueling days. May the fighting commence with another pair of killers awaiting their fate and a Queen you cannot ignore. Is this the end or just the beginning?
Will we be getting more Sorrow? I certainly hope so. But if not, I thank Dan for not only gifting me this amazing collection but also satiating my need for fantasy. My gullet is full with the blood of the enemies and whores who have died for my entertainment. More please.
Did you ever think you could mix splatterpunk and fantasy and make them work? Well in The Story of Sorrow by Daniel J. Volpe that is what this series is and it is such much fun. The story has all the elements you want in a dark fantasy with necromancy, dark magic and even zombies. Then add in the blood and gore you find in horror and its the perfect mix. The characters are crafted so well and the story is done in a way that you will want to devour it in one setting. It is a quick read that once you pick it up you will not want to put it down.
This splatter horror fantasy by Daniel Volpe is a different kind of horror book. I've never read horror and fantasy together but found that I love it! This book is a page turner with action and suspense at every corner. The detail is amazing as well which makes you feel like you're right there and need your own sword to defend yourself! I definitely recommend this book if you like horror, splatter punk, and fantasy!
This is my first Daniel J. Volpe book and definitely won’t be my last! To read a Splatter Fantasy book was definitely a wild and entertaining ride! This is a 4.5/5 stars! I loved it!
