Well, in the least surprising news of the year, Rachel Harrison does it again… deliver a straight up banger of a novel.
While existing squarely within trope territory, it never once feels trite or contrived. Far from it actually. It takes us on unexpected turn after unexpected turn, with each one bringing with it a new level of absurdity and b-movie bliss.
Our protagonist, Willa, is relatable and sympathetic. She fumbles her way through the story with a charming clumsiness that feels all too familiar. The other characters aren’t drawn nearly as well, but their flatness feels intentional, almost as if they were meant to exist solely as backdrops to Willa’s arc.
The setting is fun, the monsters are even more so. You won’t see what’s coming next, of that much I assure you.
I am lucky to have been given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book, and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to read it. Rachel Harrison is one of the best things going in the business right now, and this book only further solidifies her place in the horror community, cementing herself squarely in its upper echelon.

I wanted to love this sooooo bad because the premise is amazing and I love a time loop, and books that involved weddings. But the writing in this was driving me absolutely nuts. It was so choppy and had so many short staccato sentences, and the main character was also very annoying imo.

Let’s be honest: the Groundhog Day mixed with another genre thing has kind of taken off in recent years, specifically in horror. But Rachel Harrison manages to put a fresh spin on it. If you’re worried about things getting too repetitive in this plot, don’t. This book is wild, surprising, and a real treat for all fans of the genre. She remains a must read author for me.
At first I was like: “Girl, ANOTHER breakup story?!” Why is this such a recurring theme in her work? But the insights into relationship dynamics and self doubt in this one are so spot on, and the way they fit in with the trauma of Willa’s horrific situation feels natural. (Even when things get crazy.)
Harrison has a habit of writing protagonists who are primarily either smug and egotistical or broken-hearted and feeling sorry for themselves, or sometimes even an interesting combination of the two. Willa falls more into the broken-hearted category, and I liked her a LOT more than the MC from “Play Nice.” You still get the author’s signature blend of darkness and romantic comedy, and this time the dark stuff is extra dark.
The violence and gore are written so well here. Once things reach that point in the story, it really hits the gas and I found it difficult to put down. The threats were creative and fun to read about, and Harrison didn’t hold back with the blood. You can tell that she had a blast writing the story.
The side effects of being stuck in a time loop include finding out what your friends really think of you, questioning all your decisions, and using alcohol to try to numb your stress (heavily. I think Willa might have a problem.)
Minor nitpicks:
- if Cassie was my best friend, I would be miserable. She was so negative and two-faced!
- As much as I liked the mantra “The only way out is through,” I think it was really over-used.
- Not sure about some of the dialogue. It just felt too quippy.
This book is now up there with my favorites of hers, next to “So Thirsty” and “Black Sheep.” But the only one I didn’t really vibe with was “Play Nice.” They’re all good. (I really appreciated the pep talk in the afterword, too.) 5 stars! Even the ending was satisfying, and I had no idea how this situation was possibly going to be resolved. I’ll definitely get a physical copy to add to my collection.

Three Words That Describe This Book: time loop, character driven, wholly original
Saying wholly original about a time loop seems like an oxymoron, and here it is NOT and exactly why I have those are my three words. It is also intensely uneasy but all Time Loop novels are so I think that is implied, It is also darkly humors, thought-provoking, and really empowering. This is Willa's story of how she is going to figure out the human she wants to be-- not defined by her partner or friends-- but herself. The only way out is through. Literally and figuratively. This is a time loop novel that knows it is a time loop novel but also wants to be itself. It achieves that at every turn of the page.
Okay, I need to start with a few things here. First, I have not officially reviewed a RH book since her debut because horror reviewers were hard enough to find at Booklist and LJ and RH was an author librarian reviewers loved to be assigned. I allowed others -- who I knew would do her books justice-- to get the titles they wanted while I focused on others. But, second, as I did a few stops on our books tours together last fall and RH was talking about this novel-- in revisions at that time-- I was like wait, what? I am a sucker for a Time Loop story always. So literally 9 months ago I told my editor at Booklist that I HAD to review this one. I will step back next time for someone else.
And I am glad I did.
Okay the premise is in the summary. It is a wedding time loop. Willa is our MC and narrator. She is the one stuck in the time loop, but this is not a time loop like you ever read before. When I got to the second loop-- well that is when I knew this book was going to be 5 stars.
I do not want to give much away here but what she does with the time loop itself if darkly humorous, touching, disturbing, unsettling, and also, the resolution is great. It is a true resolution from a SF background and I loved that. Also the way the loop alters each time is AMAZING. It adds urgency, thought provoking seriousness and dark humor to it all.
And the connection to how she starts to get info on how to leave the loop-- perfection!
This is not a "rom-com" time loop either. This is Willa's story. She is a mess of anxiety and depression and not just because she chose to end her own wedding a few months before this book opens. And not just because she is going to see her ex. She has always been that way and she has always felt bad about being too much for others or that her feelings weren't validated. Her first action to make her won story and live as her authentic self came when she broke off her engagement but the test to how she would go through it all to get to the other side--- that is this book.
Time Loop stories are also character centered always and that is why I love them. When the "plot" repeats over and over, the reason you read is the characters. But also, the new twist RH adds to the entire Time Loop subgenre here means that the plot is different in key ways each time. This allows Willa to grow as a character and flesh out for us, but it also allows the other main players to be fleshed out. She spends more time with different people each time and that makes the entire book better.
Because this is a time loop novel, and because RH does follow the outline of the subgenre even while making key changes to make it her own, readers know the loop will end. But one of the best things about this novel is that the thing that caused her to be in the time loop-- well it has a history itself and she stops her loop but the reader is left with the lingering knowledge that it has harmed others in the past and the fear that it will do so again. LOVED THAT.
Yes this is for people who like time loop horror like The Gone World by Sweterlitsch and Shining Girls and even time loop adjacent novels like Dark Matter by Crouch, but this book is HORROR (with those capitals) that seeks to honor the traditions of the genre while also making it something new. It investigated the genre itself. For that reason, my main read likes are Lucky Day by Tingle and I Was a Teenaged Slasher by SGJ.
Side note-- I know the human Evan was based on so that was also fun.

Rachel Harrison has what we should all probably consider a superpower, and it’s in the way she takes all the little experiences much of the world would write off as minor and uninteresting (anxiety! overthinking! feeling stuck!) and turns them into knock-down, drag-out, whole-ass cinematic NOVELS that make the rest of us feel seen. At least, that’s how her books feel for me.
And in this one, Willa is truly just going through it. We’ve all been there. It’s not really a loud, dramatic “through it,” it’s just that very specific, exhausting feeling where you're smiling for photos but trying not to crumble inside, because you know everyone around you is just so sick of your shit, but you still feel like shit and you’re trying not to show it, and can they tell? because if so, now you’re anxious about that too. Harrison just has a knack for pinpointing these understated but universal lived experiences, and turning them into gloriously fun and heart-wrenching stories with blood and guts and gore.
The horrors in this particular book are hilariously inventive; I had a great time just watching her have a blast (I presume) writing these insane time loop worlds. I truly hope your enjoyment of this glorious little book matches mine.

This book was so much fun! I was a little unsure about the time-loop aspect going in, but it was executed perfectly. I loved the blend of horror and comedy, with the humor providing just the right amount of relief from the tension. Each repeated day was increasingly bizarre and unpredictable, which kept me completely hooked from start to finish.
The story follows Willa, a woman struggling after a devastating breakup, as she attends her best friend’s destination wedding. What should be a celebratory getaway turns into a nightmare when a masked slasher begins brutally murdering the guests, trapping Willa in a deadly time loop where she must relive the horrifying day again and again.

Allow me to introduce you to what I’m pretty sure will become my new favorite Rachel Harrison book - I LOVED this and am endlessly impressed by how different her stories are while also having very hard hitting overall messages.
Kiss Slay Replay had so many different horror elements I love: time loops, slasher vibes, creature feature, and very real reflections on depression and anxiety. Love, love, loved this book and I recommend to any readers who are intrigued by the elements that I enjoyed in it! BIG thank you to Berkley for my early copy, I can’t wait for everyone to love this just as much as I did come September😍

I’m not usually a huge fan of time-loop stories, but I knew I had to make an exception for Rachel Harrison. I can safely say that I have no regrets.
Kiss, Slay, Replay follows Willa- who is going through the worst breakup of her life. To top it all off, her ex-fiancee is going to be at the wedding she has to attend. Willa doom-spirals her way to the wedding only to arrive and feel that things are off. Which makes sense as the wedding ends with a massacre. But despite dying, Willa wakes up the next morning, the day of the wedding and has to relive it all again and again.
Groundhog Day but make it terrifying. Rachel Harrison really gave us all the possible scenario’s for Willa and her friends to live out. It kept the time-loop aspect of the story really engaging- where often I can find the repetitiveness of it annoying. Each time the day replayed, Willa tried something new.
While this was a horror, I also feel like it had an emotional aspect as well. Willa is obviously going through a lot and so are her friends. I felt her emotions and her frustrations with each interaction she had- especially with Cassie. I was so invested in her story, I literally could not put the book down and needed to know how it was going to end. To anyone who enjoys horror- I would recommend this book. It was funny, emotional and honestly unsettling. All of the best things!

While this was a horror, I also feel like it had an emotional aspect as well. Willa is obviously going through a lot and so are her friends. I felt her emotions and her frustrations with each interaction she had- especially with Cassie. I was so invested in her story, I literally could not put the book down and needed to know how it was going to end. To anyone who enjoys horror- I would recommend this book. It was funny, emotional and honestly unsettling. All of the best things!

Wow, this book was HIGHLY anticipated and it did not let me down (are we shocked tho? This is Rachel Harrison we’re talking about).
Rachel’s books have the ability to just put you through every single emotion and the authors note / acknowledgments at the end really topped it off for me, what an incredibly fun time.
If you’re a fan of “happy death day” and “Palm Springs” you’re really gonna enjoy this book! We follow Willa, a woman on the way to her friend’s wedding, who is anticipating seeing not only her old friends but the dreaded ex. She finds herself stuck in a time loop with endless possibilities and no way out??? Honestly, this book took the most insane route and I ate that shhhhhit up for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I could not put it down. I loved the romantic subplot, the grief and the reflection on mental health. If you’re looking forward to this one, I’m gonna say you’re going to be thoroughly impressed.

I just finished this, and I am sobbing! Not because it’s a sad ending, on the contrary, it’s beautiful and cathartic. I’m crying because Willa and I have a lot in common and damnit I felt so seen in this book. Thank you Rachel, for putting the advice you give me in real life into this book. It hit me in all the right ways, Willa might be my favorite of her characters yet. This story was fun, gory, and scary, but beautiful in all of the emotions that are put on the page. It’s really about finding yourself and not allowing yourself to get sucked into your fear. I’ve had a rough couple of years and this book was everything I need to hear to get myself back to the person I want to be. Rachel writes my favorite female characters, each one always has an attribute that I identify with and Willa is the one I want to be when I grow up. A time loop horror story where Willa has to relive the day of her friends wedding over and over again… and dying over and over again.
I absolutely devoured this one! I love the idea of a time loop and I thought it was so perfectly executed in this one! Some of the days were absolutely terrifying and some had me actually laughing out loud at the absurdity of them! I was rooting for Willa the entire book and I loved her development throughout the story!
If you’re a fan of time loops and mash up horror then I highly recommend this one!

I read this in one day and it was very fun, but it’s fully on me for requesting this and not realising it’s a time loop. I was just really excited by a new Rachel Harrison. I hate time loops in any book so it’s truly me and not the book. It was so readable and the plot and characters were great, I just get very bored when we kept repeating the same day 😭

I was super excited for this one as the premise sounded very different. However, I just wasn’t a fan of how this one escalated and I found myself not interested for the FMC. I did find it easy enough to read but I just wanted a little more.

RACHEL HARRISON TIME LOOP HORROR RACHEL HARRISON TIME LOOP HORROR
I’m kind of mindblown a little? This is cleverly advertised because it hides MAJOR details. This is not just a time loop slasher so I hope you like surprises. This was entirely unexpected!
I don’t know if it’s because I equate this concept to Happy Death Day, but I expected this to be kind of silly, like horror comedy, even though it isn’t advertised as comedy, but I was absolutely right. It’s silly and ridiculous, more so as it goes on (for example, in loop number one, the killer likes to remove people’s eyeballs, wear them, and skip around, yet that’s one of the least ridiculous parts of this book) but some parts in some of the loops are genuinely gripping. Yes it gets more ridiculous as time goes on but honestly, it’s a ton of fun trying to guess what the next loop has in store.
Because HERE’S THE THING. Halfway through, there’s a plot twist that changes the entire nature of this book! It goes from the expected time loop slasher to a plot even more elaborate than you’re expecting. JUST YOU WAIT. It blew my mind and totally changes the game. All I can say is this is the most creative slasher I ever have (and maybe ever will?) read. This is NOT a generic time loop slasher and you don’t find that out until halfway through, but just hang tight. This book turned out to be completely unexpected in the best way.
Really my only critique is that the whole thing with Willa and Danny is super instalovey, lacks chemistry, and is not convincing at all, but romance is such a minor plot point that it doesn’t even bug me. This book clearly isn’t a romance novel and that isn’t the point. Also, with this book being so tongue in cheek, almost horror comedy adjacent, you kind of don’t expect it to be super serious or realistic. But really it doesn’t even matter because their dynamic is such a small and insignificant part of this book.
The main thing is that THIS BOOK IS NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT IT TO BE and becomes almost an entirely different genre than it advertises. If you are an ADHD reader like me, love plot surprises and shakeups, this is anything but a generic slasher. It’s entirely unexpected, honestly it’s completely ridiculous, and you absolutely will not be bored. And the best part? Unlike most time loop books, in this one, you actually get an explanation for what causes the time loop!
I wasn’t planning on giving this 5 stars, but this was so unexpected that it deserves it. I love a good surprise!

The premise hooked me immediately. A woman attends her best friend's wedding, gets caught in a night of absolute carnage, dies... and then wakes up back at the beginning of the day. It sounds chaotic, and trust me, it is.
What I loved most was how well the time-loop element was handled. Every reset felt fresh, and I never found myself getting bored or frustrated with the repetition. Willa's attempts to survive, save the people she cares about, and figure out what is actually happening kept the story moving at a relentless pace.
The book balances horror and humor really well, but what surprised me was how emotional it felt. Beneath all the blood, monsters, and wedding-day disasters is a story about heartbreak, self-worth, friendship, and figuring out who you are after a major life change. Willa's struggles felt genuine, and I found myself completely invested in her journey.
I also appreciated that the horror never felt predictable. Every time I thought I knew where the story was heading, it took another turn. Some of the reveals were genuinely surprising, and the increasingly bizarre situations made the book impossible to put down.

This was easily one of my favorite books of the entire year. It was unique, suspenseful, funny, creepy, witty, and somehow emotionally stimulating at the same time. Rachel Harrison managed to pack so much into this story without any of it feeling overwhelming or out of place. I was completely hooked, and honestly, I didn’t want it to end. 🤩
I freaking loved the time loop element. It kept me connected to the story and glued to the pages because every new loop brought something different while still feeling familiar. With every chapter came a whole new killer and a new version of events, but those interconnected loops kept everything tied together. I kept thinking about how incredibly difficult a story like this must have been to create without it becoming confusing or repetitive, but Rachel Harrison absolutely nailed it. Every puzzle piece felt expertly crafted and intentionally placed. The transitions were seamless, the connections were satisfying, and the entire thing was brilliantly written. It was just a superb reading experience.
I also connected with the characters so easily. Even with all of the chaos happening around them, they felt real and engaging, and I genuinely cared about what happened to them. And the campground wedding venue? Such a fantastic setting. It gave the story this perfect combination of cozy, isolated, romantic, and deeply unsettling that worked ridiculously well.
One of my favorite things was the humor and snark woven throughout the story. It never felt like the book was trying too hard to be funny or clever. The wit came naturally through the characters and dialogue, giving me moments where I was laughing even while waiting for the next creepy or completely unhinged thing to happen.

It has been a hot minute since I read a story with a time loop. This is one of the best written stories I’ve read using this type of plot. It is simply phenomenal.
Willa is not in a good place. She is getting ready to attend the wedding of two of her best friends. But, this will be the first time she has seen her ex-fiancé since they broke up. She’s not exactly looking forward to it.
The venue is gorgeous, but for Willa, something is just not right. And here is where the story takes a turn in a direction you will never see coming - don’t even try, just enjoy the ride.
I absolutely adored Willa. Her growth as a character from the beginning of this story to the end is just one of the reasons why Rachel Harrison is one of the best horror writers of female characters. Willa is honest, flawed, resourceful, and relatable.
The horror elements in this book are positively frightening. I loved every page. This book is creepy, scary, and will make you check your surroundings at your next wedding.
This story is fresh and unique. Rachel Harrison gives the reader a new and exciting experience with every book. Please don’t ask me to choose a favorite - it’s not possible anymore.

Five big stars. This book was such a trip! I will keep this spoiler free because I don’t want to give away anything. From start to finish, I was on this wild ride with Willa. There is so much happening in this story, which isn’t a horror story and it’s also not a love story, it’s just Willa’s story and it’s crazy! Loved it!

My first ever ARC review on Net Galley!
My main complaint would be the anaphora used in the first chapter. I assume the technique was used to characterize the anxiety ridden narrator but I felt it was slightly overdone. The rest of the writing was great, very descriptive and captivating.
