The Road to Revenge: A trip to remember. For all the wrong reasons.

Rate this book
My husband thinks he’s away on a routine business trip. He has no idea I’ll soon show up at his hotel… or what I’ve got planned.

When I finally reach his door, two futures could be lying in wait. In one, he’ll pull me into his arms, we’ll take off in the rental car I’ve booked, and we'll salvage what’s left of our marriage. In the other, he’ll shut me out even more than he has already, and the long journey I’m making will have been for nothing.

But there’s a third possibility.

It’s something I hardly dare acknowledge, but it’s been creeping closer ever since I discovered what he’s hiding. And it would change everything.

As the plane takes off, the butterflies in my stomach give way to a chilled sense of dread. My mother says I’m flogging a dead horse. Maybe she’s right.

But I didn’t come all this way to turn back.

Not when there’s so much at stake. Not when my husband’s betrayal cuts this deep. Because everything I’ve already sacrificed… everything I stand to lose… all depends on what happens next.

The road to revenge can’t be travelled along twice.

A twisty and gripping psychological thriller about broken trust, hidden secrets, and a journey one passenger may not survive.

Perfect for fans of Daniel Hurst and Freida McFadden.

The Road To Revenge
Author: Maria Frankland

Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

WOW!!! This a truly incredibly intense psychological thriller.
Maria has gone and done it again with this fast-paced thriller, evoking heightened feelings of suspense, anticipation and excitement, with many unexpected surprises.

A captivating psych story with short chapters that kept me engrossed and guessing from the start, with so many twists and turns and held me on the edge with a totally unexpected ending.

Sarah Carter's husband Riley has gone on a business trip to Vegas, making every excuse not to include her in the trip, he didn't want her with.
Unable to contact Riley for several days, his phones always turned off, Sarah becomes concerned and begins to wonder what he's up to and who is he there with.

Sarah decides to surprise or even shock Riley by travelling to Vegas and turn up at his hotel.
With her plans set to either attempt to patch up their marriage, but finding she has been betrayed by her husband she plots something more sinister.
The Road To Revenge is an extremely gripping read, a roadtrip of rivetting tension.
Maria's characters are incredible and thoroughly enjoy, so believable and set in visually awesome locations.

I absolutely loved this book, another truly brilliant novel by one of my favourite authors Maria Frankland.

This is a story about a woman( Sarah) who has difficulty letting go, following almost being jilted at the altar by her first husband. This sets the tone for her clinging nature in future relationships and exacerbates her desperation when her 2nd husband Riley appears to be pulling away.
Will a USA road trip that was called off previously resurrect their relationship, and who is the stranger Jake that she has met via Instagram? Why is he so interested in her and her marriage?
Interestingly, this story made me question how many people are so desperate for love. They simply can not accept that someone neither loves nor wants to be with them. If this happens, what options does Sarah have? Revenge is always an option, but what is it they say about revenge: when you start a journey of revenge, dig two graves. Well paced. 4 stars

“The Road to Revenge” by Maria Frankland is an absolute trip from start to finish. What begins as a desperate attempt to save a crumbling marriage quickly spirals into a chaotic, twist-filled ride. Sarah is determined to win back Riley, so determined that she surprises him on his business trip and essentially forces him into a road trip he never saw coming.
This story is packed with lies, secrets, and delusions. The tension is perfectly balanced with sharp humor, making the unraveling feel both unsettling and wildly entertaining. Buckle up because this one is messy, unpredictable, and impossible to look away from.

i have read a few other books by this author and they are all usually pretty great psychological thrillers with a lot of twists, turns, and suspense and bombshells you do not see coming. this is her latest book which just came out this week so naturally i wanted to read it right away. as usual the story did not disappoint. this is about a couple who have drifted apart - this makes two books in a row this seems to be the storyline but at least the rest of the stories and outcomes were not exactly the same. this was one crazy ride (literally since it is called the road to revenge).

sarah, the female main character, has been scorned by both of the men she married. ben, the first husband, had no business marrying her but he did and then finally admitted the truth on their honeymoon. when his new wife raven tragically and mysteriously dies, sarah hopes ben will come back to her and starts to make efforts to reconcile, but instead he just accuses her of stalkerish behavior. riley, the second husband, who she was married to during most of this story, also decided he did not want to be with her anymore, but this was unbeknownst to sarah when the story began. though there were signs that he might be having an affair, sarah hoped that her fears were wrong and decided to surprise riley while he was on a business trip in the USA with plans to finally take the honeymoon they had to put off due to the pandemic after his conference was done. riley was definitely not expecting her to show up, nor plan the vacation they never got to go on so needless to say he was surprised, not exactly happy to see her, and had no desire to go on the trip she planned, so he, too comes clean with her. after they got attacked/ robbed, lost their passports, and needed to go to an embassy to get new ones, there was little alternative but to continue on the road trip sarah had planned for them to at least accomplish that. while there were a few things that i saw coming, (including the affair) my thoughts are starting to get spoilery so...

overall it was another quick thriller and that i read in a couple hours. it held my interest the entire time so yes, i would definitely recommend this book along with the rest of her books.

Maria Frankland’s latest novel, The Road to Revenge is inspired by her recent travels to the United States. She literally lugged the characters along in her head, and the result is a wild, white-knuckle ride for any lover of suspense and killer twists—exactly what I love in psychological thrillers!

It explores the deteriorating mental health of Sarah and her devolving marriage to Riley, as Sarah goes to desperate extremes to save her marriage—refusing to repeat previous relationship failures.

The climax reached a boiling point and overflowed in a reckoning that rattled my brain, leading to a surprisingly diabolical ending that left me questioning. . . Who really is the villain?!

Aye yay yay, Maria, you did it again with an ‘On Fleek 5-Star’ for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow! Maria has done it again. I absolutely loved this book. It was impossible to put down. Right away you connect with the main character. You feel all her pain and sadness. There’s just enough mystery and intrigue to have you completely immersed in the story. I guessed one of the twists but plenty shocked me in this book. I think this is my new favorite by Maria Frankland.

The Road to Revenge by Maria Frankland
Release date: March 10, 2026

Let me start with this: getting an ARC from Maria felt a little bit like being handed the keys to a car you already know is going to crash — and saying yes anyway. Because if she writes it, I’m reading it. No questions asked. No emotional insurance taken out beforehand.

Maria doesn’t really do “whodunit.” She does why did this destroy me and why am I still thinking about it a couple of hours later. And honestly? I prefer it that way. I don’t read her books to solve puzzles. I read them to feel slightly unhinged in the safest possible way.

This story? It’s about wanting to be loved so badly that you start bending yourself into shapes you don’t even recognize anymore. Sarah doesn’t just want love — she needs it. Craves it. Clings to it like it’s oxygen. And when it doesn’t come back the way she hoped? Well. There are only so many ways that can go. None of them are healthy. All of them are painfully human.

What Maria does so unfairly well is this: she makes you complicit. You’re not just watching the spiral — you’re in it. You understand the bad decisions. You almost defend them. You feel the loneliness, the desperation, the quiet “maybe this time it’ll be different.” And that’s the dangerous part. Because patterns mean something. Red flags aren’t decorations. And sometimes the loneliest person in the room is the one smiling the hardest.

Also — can we talk about the pacing? I love her fast-paced writing. It moves. It grips. It doesn’t let you breathe in peace. I devoured this in 57 minutes flat and loved every single one of them. No distractions. No breaks. Just me, spiraling willingly.

By the last page I was annoyed. Not because it wasn’t good — but because I wanted more damage. More devastation. Some of her other books have emotionally flattened me, and I’ve apparently developed a taste for that. This one left me bruised instead of broken. Hence the half star missing. (Yes, my standards are now unrealistic. I blame her.)

What this book does brilliantly is remind you that you never truly know someone. That trust can be misplaced in the most subtle ways. That your mind can twist reality just enough to make terrible decisions feel logical. And that revenge? It rarely looks the way you imagine when you first set out on the road.

If you’re expecting a cozy little mystery, this isn’t it. If you want emotional turbulence, questionable coping mechanisms, and a road trip that is absolutely not about sightseeing — buckle up.

Four and a half “please just love me properly” stars.

And Maria — thank you. Truly. I will continue to volunteer as tribute for emotional destruction.

I can highly recommend The Road to Revenge (Kindle Edition) a psychological thriller by Maria Frankland, what a page turner.

Saraha's husband Riley, has been staying away from home more often these days, and she is feeling lonely and neglected. Even when he is home he doesn't pay her any attention.

All she ever wants is to be a Mother, but Riley keeps avoiding any talk about becoming parents at the present time, and at thrity eight her body clock is ticking away.

Riley has a conference in Vegas for a couple of days with Jordan his assistant, and Sarah asks him if she can accompany him on the trip, and after his meetings they can take in the sights. Vegas was on the agenda for their honeymoon but unfortunately covid broke out and everywhere was in lockdown.

Sarah is worried that Riley has not phoned or messaged her since he flew to Vegas and she decides to contact his PA, Annabelle to ask her which hotel she booked Riley into and reluctantly she gives Sarah the details.

Sarah decides to surprise Riley at his hotel as she suspects that he is having an affair with Jordan and hopes to catch them red handed.

Sarah has been hurt in the past when she was married to her first husband Ben, and also feels that her Father doesn't show her any love.

There is only her Mother who she feels she can turn to for emotional support and love. The men in her life have let her down including her own Father, making her suffer with paranoia.

With a lot of persuasion Sarah eventually gets Riley to go on a road trip across Vegas with her in order to save her marriage after his conference was finished.

Sarah feels that they are being followed and both Riley and Sarah feel anxious. Who will survive and who will die at the end of this road trip?

Book releases March 10th!

I was completely hooked by this dark and electrifying psychological thriller.
From the opening pages, the tension simmers and steadily builds into something far more intense.

Maria Frankland crafts a story that moves at lightning speed, yet never sacrifices depth. Each short chapter sharpens the suspense, layering secrets and doubt until you’re questioning everything — and everyone. The twists are relentless, and just when you think you’ve pieced it together, the story pulls the rug out from under you with a finale I genuinely didn’t anticipate.

When Sarah Carter’s husband, Riley, leaves for a work trip to Las Vegas — adamant that she shouldn’t come along — alarm bells begin to ring. His excuses feel hollow. Then he becomes unreachable. Days pass. His phone goes straight to voicemail. Silence replaces reassurance, and suspicion takes root.

Driven by equal parts fear and determination, Sarah boards a plane to Vegas, intent on confronting him face-to-face. What begins as a desperate attempt to salvage her marriage quickly spirals into something far more dangerous once the truth reveals itself. Betrayal changes everything — and Sarah is no longer the woman willing to quietly accept it.

This is a story about deception, rage, and the fine line between heartbreak and revenge. The characters feel authentic and flawed, their emotions raw and believable. The atmosphere is vivid and immersive, making every scene pulse with tension.

A gripping, edge-of-your-seat read that kept me turning pages late into the night. Maria Frankland has delivered another powerful, twist-filled thriller that fans of the genre will devour.

Wow! This was so good!

I love Maria Frankland's writing style: Short, easy, quick-reading chapters. Teasing you little bits, holding back lots, keeping you wondering and gradually finding out snippets of this and that.

Always an attention-grabbing beginning which simply hooks you in. You're not going anywhere; you just 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 to read on.  Her writing sucks you in, you're completely immersed in their story, you feel their emotions.

Where had her husband been going? He'd not let her know he'd arrived. His phone had been switched off for 4 days now. Had he had an accident?

Relationships; problems-she writes with such skill, it feels so real, you can feel the emotions between the characters.  I read it hungrily; just couldn't get enough.

She's so expert at creating the right atmosphere.  The action flits from Yorkshire to Vegas.  Some of the hotels, which sounded interesting and unusual,  I looked up, viewed the photos, and found they were real, (which I didn't know; never been there). I like that she used actual locations; I could really get a feel for the setting etc. as I read. This really intrigued me, and got my emotions. Lots of twists and turns.

The action switches between the present, and the past. I was reading it avidly; couldn't wait to find out what happened on her arrival..... then the author kept us hanging by switching to a chapter from the past!  A dual-happening-what DID happen ten years ago? I just want to know!

Powerful dialogue. Emotions running high. People can be driven to do something extreme. Or can they? Or is it someone else? Who did something? How did they do it, and why?

Maria Frankland's books keep getting better and better, they keep surprising me-but with this, my gast has well and truly been flabbered!

ARC Reader

I have just finished reading ‘The Road to Revenge’.

I was hooked from the beginning and as usual you get to know the characters completely. I really empathised with Sarah and her understanding of the sequence of events that led to the USA and the road trip with Riley.

Although the prologue hinted at a different conclusion than what played out, as is true of all Maria’s books, the twist was a surprise and immediately changed the direction of where my mind was going.

As always, Maria has the talent of creating such interesting and believable characters, which in my opinion gets you invested in their story from the beginning.

In this book, Sarah may be intense, but I feel it is justified due to a temporary escape from reality because of the behaviour of the men in her life.

Without any spoilers, I could not envision the ending but due to Sarah’s poor judge of character, it was understandable.

I highly recommend this book, although afterwards you may think twice before embarking on a road trip in the USA .

I most definitely give The Road to Revenge 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The story of a paranoid psychotic woman and the people who have impacted her life. Sarah has felt that Riley, her husband, has been distant and she believes she can make him love her again. This comes after her first husband leaves her the first day of their honeymoon. When Riley goes to the US on a business trip, she decides to surprise him. She flies to Vegas, rents a car and shows up at his hotel. They had to postpone their honeymoon due to Covid, but she has recreated the road trip they had planned. He is reluctant to go, and she manipulates him into agreeing. All sorts of things begin to happen that were not planned for. Her mother and best friend have encouraged her to keep going. She has a secret friend from an internet chat who knows her circumstances and says he's there to help if she needs him to. There are so many twists in this story it will blow your mind. I loved the short chapters and was saying just one more until my eyes reused to stay open. This is Maria Frankland doing what she does best. Writing a fantastic story that will stay with you long after The End. I am an ARC reader, and I highly recommend this book.

ARC review

The Road to Revenge is an emotionally charged, gripping story of a woman who is desperate for love despite feeling her husband Riley’s betrayal. She decides to surprise him on his business trip overseas in America by showing up at his hotel unannounced. As the pain consumes her, she devises her plans for revenge. “Revenge is a dish best served cold” she states and I shuddered. I could feel Sarah’s anguish, fear and desperation through the words I read and my heart melted for her, despite her crazy plans for revenge. Her pain consumed her and it made sense to me as to why she was so desperate to do what she was trying to do. This character’s journey was emotional and beautifully written. The writing was fast-paced and kept me turning the pages and I simply couldn’t put this book down. The tension increased as the book went on and the final twist, I simply did not see coming. Once again, Maria Frankland has written another 5 star phenomenal book that I highly recommend!

The Road to Revenge is a gripping, easy read about a woman who won’t ignore her husband’s betrayal. Her long trip to confront him is full of real emotion — hope, fear, anger, and everything in between. Maria builds the tension in a steady, believable way, letting you feel every step of the character’s journey. Maria once again delivers an amazing story that pulls you right into the character’s world. And the twist is remarkable, adding a sharp turn that keeps the story exciting without giving anything away. It’s a fast, engaging thriller about broken trust and a woman who refuses to be pushed aside.

I’ve learned not to start a Maria Frankland book unless I’m ready to surrender my entire evening. Her stories grab hold of me every single time, and I happily lose hours because I can’t stop turning the pages.

Maria has done it again!

The Road To Revenge is a well written, fast paced, dark, twisty thriller that pulls you in from the opening prologue and doesn't let go until the final page.

In this book we meet Sarah who travels to America to surprise her husband who is on a business trip but she doesn't quite receive the welcome she was hoping for. It seems he has a secret but he might not be the only one who has something to hide...

As we all know Maria doesn't do happy endings so it will come as no surprise that this book doesn't end with one but it will certainly keep you guessing until the end.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be recommending it to others, it would make a great holiday read!

Thanks as ever to Maria for the advanced copy of this book.

I was chosen to read this one out of 50 others. this one kept me captivated. I felt bad for the main character at first. But then I realized that she was not right. That she was psychotic. And as the a story goes trying to hang on to her husband and the person who ends up ending her life. She thought was her friend her confidant. Like olive Maria's books I can never put them down. I'm not the best with reviews, but i've read twenty five of her books and every single one of them was amazing. I just started reading in september and most of the books that I've read have been hers. I started reading a few other authors that are very good. But for some reason, i'm wanna make sure i've read every single one of her books.

4.5 ⭐️ | Once again, Miss Frankland has completely left me speechless. I had to read the ending again because I truly needed to confirm what I had just read! Sarah’s journey was a rollercoaster as I felt so bad for her. She pretty much chased her husband Riley desperately trying to make their marriage work! She is simply terrified of another failed marriage after her first time around failed with Ben. Then in the next breath I thought to myself this lady is crazy lol. The unknown made this a very intriguing read. I truly enjoyed the alternating timelines that flashed back between Riley’s failed marriage 1 and current marriage 2. Overall, a great, twisty & mind blowing read like all of her others that I’ve read!

I was accepted by Maria Frankland to be a part of the ARC team for The Road To Revenge and below is my honest review.

She’s done it AGAIN. Another fantastic book that I’ll constantly think about 😂 anyone who knows me will know I’m a huge fan of Maria so I always feel honoured to be on the ARC team!

The story follows Sarah (who is a bit of an unreliable narrator) who just wants to be loved. She’s not having the best luck but she will go to extremes for it. She doesn’t ignore the red flags, she follows them..

I was hooked from the first line, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I know I’ll always get this from Maria, I love her pacing and her writing style!

The twist made me gasp, I thought I knew where it was going then BAM it changed. So intense.

If you have any content triggers, I advise you to read any trigger warnings beforehand.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys gripping psychological thriller.

Overall, I give this 5 stars!

Thank you Maria for asking me to read and review!

This was without a doubt another great book by Maria Frankland! I first had my opinions when it came to Sarah and her husband Riley - whom she thinks might have an affair because he grew all distant and cold towards her - but those did very much change over the course of the book, and, oh boy, this trip was really a wild one! Better buckle up and also get some snacks when you are going to read it!

There was only one small thing that did bother me, however, I can not talk about here without spoiling the good stuff and also the big, big twist! And since I still did have a lot of fun reading, I am giving the full five stars for Road To Revenge!

WOW! Maria Frankland has written another great read, The Road To Revenge! From the very first page, I was hooked to find out about Sarah's story about her terrible childhood, bad first marriage, and then her second husband's possible affair. She decides to confront this husband while he's in Las Vegas with the other woman.
What happens is a very fast paced mystery that kept me engrossed with a steady tension buildup! The Road To Revenge is a very well-written psychological, mysterious thriller with twists and turns that kept me reading without putting down except tending to tasks necessary in my life.
Way to go Maria Frankland!

Wow this book started on a cliff edge and finished the same way, with a twisty windy road in between.

None of the characters were particularly sympathetic. I actually felt that they deserved each other. I know I should feel sorry for Sarah, abandoned by her father and her first husband. Desperate to be loved, desperate for a child to love her (perhaps not the best reason to have a child). So desperate it seems that nothing is off limits. What lengths would this woman go to, to achieve what she perceives as her right.

Read on!!

What a twisted road it is! Packed full of suspense, emotions and what the heck is going on! Sarah is going to follow her husband on his business trip, to find out what he is up to. When she gets there she convinces him to take the road trip they had planned on but didn’t get to take for their honeymoon. It definitely does not go as either of them planned. This is a grab you by the throat and not let go book and it will keep you reading all night! Incredibly twisted and so good!

I liked this story, kept my interest, moved quickly. I liked the main character, Sarah, but she did have some issues. I didn't understand why she just wanted revenge on her ex's girlfriend and not the ex. I did not love the end. A character shows up in the end who had not been in the book that much. It was a big surprise to me who was behind the things that happened Sarah and Riley on the road trip.

Very sad

The MFC was messed up no doubt about it but I hated that ending. I hated Riley. He was her cheating husband and he got a girl pregnant and was engaged to her even though he was still married. I don't want to give anything away because there are twists and revelations that need to be experienced. I just felt sad at the end. And disappointed. Nobody deserved a happy ending.

To be fair, this was a great read. It started off a little bit slow but it truly picked up as if the rollercoaster never stops! There were a few head twisted moments that I did not expect, and I thought I saw what was going to be the outcome. But it wasn’t, totally different plot twist and well worth the read 🙌🏼
