Silent Night

Rate this book
A snow-covered cabin.
Christmases past and present.
One grieving mother.
Broken promises.
Cryptic gifts.

In an attempt to escape the constant reminders of her grief since she lost her beloved son, Kyle, last Christmas, Gerri Phillips heads back to her hometown of Slater Falls, Rhode Island.

The snow-blanketed cabin is welcoming, with the comforting scent of home-cooked chicken noodle soup; it both warms her and casts her mind back to the comforts of her own childhood, before her life became complicated and before she lost everything she held dear that one fateful night.

Alone and isolated as the snow continues to fall, the creaks of an unfamiliar home alert her mind to the possibility that she's not alone. As she questions her sanity, wondering if she is as damaged as her family believes, she calls the local sheriff to witness the strange gifts that keep appearing with no trace of how they got there.

Some secrets refuse to stay hidden; some need to be revealed and then burned, smothered in a blanket of smoke before true healing can begin. Will Gerri be able to decipher what's really happening, or is her mind too broken?

This is a really strong debut psychological thriller. 'Silent Night' is the perfect title for this haunting tale. Gerri Phillips is grieving the loss of her son Kyle and needs a break from the familiarity of her home, where everywhere she looks is a memory that threatens to tip her over the edge. She rents a snow-covered cabin in her hometown for the festive period.

The cabin is warm and welcoming, but unfamiliar noises and a feeling of being watched leave her questioning whether she's in the midst of a breakdown, a cruel prank or a haunting. When Christmas presents linked to memories start appearing with no evidence as to who is leaving them there, she calls the local sheriff. Is that pity or belief in his eyes? Is she as lost as her family fears, or is she unearthing secrets that were meant to stay hidden?

I thoroughly recommend this page-turner, and I'll be keeping an eye out for more from Rowan.

I'm not an avid reader. Never have been. THIS one, though! Oh..... THIS one had me hooked from the beginning to the end in one sitting! Definitely worth the read!!! Do yourself a favor and dive into this thriller! Just wouldn't suggest starting it a couple of hours before bed on a work night. You'll need an extra cup (or two) of coffee to get you through the work day for having stayed up too late. SO worth it, though!

This is an incredibly strong debut! The premise hooked me from page one! Rowan’s writing is lush and evocative, with descriptions that made every scene vivid and immersive. Sometimes the pacing slowed a bit with long passages, but the atmosphere always pulled me in.
I found myself wanting even more from these characters; more backstory, motivation, and time with them. I’m invested and genuinely looking forward to seeing how their stories continue in future books.
Overall, a gorgeously written, imaginative story. Rowan is an author to watch, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
