"I'm a poor lonesome cow-boy and a long way from home..." Traduit en français, cela donnerait à peu près ça : "Je suis un pauvre cow-boy solitaire, loin de son foyer..." C'est la complainte que chante Lucky Luke, "l'homme qui tire plus vite que son ombre", chaque fois que s'achève un album de ses aventures. Et comme il bourlingue dans l'Ouest américain depuis quelques dizaines d'années, il a eu tout le temps de s'éclaircir la voix... Lucky Luke apparaît en effet pour la première fois dans l'Almanach de Spirou daté de 1947 et publié fin 1946. Son créateur est un certain Morris - Maurice de Bévère pour l'état civil. Un passionné de westerns et d'Amérique, qui séjourna d'ailleurs aux États-Unis au début des années cinquante. Il rencontra notamment l'équipe du délirant magazine Mad, qui lui donna l'envie de faire de son personnage une pure parodie. Il croisa aussi la route de René Goscinny, futur père d'Astérix, qui deviendra le scénariste de Lucky Luke en 1955 et le restera jusqu'à sa disparition en 1977. Les albums de Lucky Luke revisitent l'histoire du western et mettent en scène avec humour et distance les grandes figures de l'Ouest, comme le juge Roy Bean ou Calamity Jane. Et, bien sûr, les fameux frères Dalton, transformés ici en un quatuor pitoyable et drolatique, passant son temps à s'évader de prison avant d'y être reconduit par le héros... Et puis, il y a Rantanplan. Celui qui a dit un jour que le chien était le meilleur ami de l'homme ne devait pas connaître Rantanplan, le chien le plus stupide à l'ouest du Pecos - et sans doute partout ailleurs. Heureusement que Jolly Jumper, cheval du héros et, à l'occasion, son partenaire au jeu d'échecs, est là pour rétablir l'équilibre... Aujourd'hui, Lucky Luke a un petit peu changé. Par exemple, il ne fume plus. Il a remplacé la cigarette par une brindille d'herbe. Il boit plus volontiers du coca que du whisky. Mais avec sa chemise jaune, son jean à revers blancs, son gilet noir et son foulard rouge, il reste sans nul doute le cow-boy le plus célèbre de toute la bande dessinée. --Gilbert Jacques

About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

By my count Billy should be sixteen years old at this time - not exactly the innocent scamp everyone treats him as. Oh well, good stuff either way.

I like the notes about all the towns and how they're doing in the modern day.

After spending two years of his 1,247 years of manual labor at the penitentiary, Billy the Kid will be judged for his crimes in another courthouse and Lucky Luke is asked to bring him there. An unknown local desperado got a deal with him to share Billy's huge stash for setting him free...
Nice little jokes all over the book. Another funny story in the series. After all, he's just a kid!

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Westernowo-przygodowa seria Egmontu powiększyła się o kolejny album przygód dzielnego rewolwerowca. W tomie 28 duet Morris-Goscinny przygotował dla czytelników starcie dwóch ikon Dzikiego Zachodu: legendarnego strzelca i jeszcze bardziej legendarnego bandyty.

Fabuła Lucky Luke tom 28: Eskorta jest prosta, ale też niezwykle wciągająca (co zresztą jest znakiem rozpoznawczym serii). Luke zostaje wynajęty do eskortowania Billy’ego the Kida, który został schwytany i ma być przewieziony do sądu w odległym mieście. Zadanie to nie będzie łatwe, biorąc pod uwagę rangę przestępcy. Podróż przez prerię obfituje więc tu w liczne zwroty akcji które jeszcze mocniej przykują uwagę czytelnika.

Wartka akcja to tylko jedna z zalet komiksu. René Goscinny nie zapomina tu również o charakterystycznym dla serii humorze, który pojawia się w najbardziej nieoczekiwanych momentach. Podobnie jak w innych tomach opiera się on przede wszystkim na gagach wizualnych i ironicznych komentarzach. Wszystko to jest doskonale przemyślane i idealnie wkomponowane w westernową otoczkę historii.

Pośród zalet Lucky Luke tom 28 należy jednak przede wszystkim wymienić wyraziste postacie. Obaj bohaterowie są doskonale scharakteryzowani, a relacje pomiędzy nimi są jednym z ciekawszych elementów tej historii. Pierwszoplanową rolę odgrywa tu oczywiście Luke, ale eskortowany przez niego przestępca również ma wiele momentów, aby zaprezentować swoją mocno nietuzinkową naturę....

In 'Het escorte' keert Billy the Kid terug. De snotneus (want zo wordt hij bij Morris & Goscinny voorgesteld) zaait nog steeds iedereen angst aan. De humor wordt verrijkt door een klunzige bandiet die vele malen probeert Billy the Kid te bevrijden. Een prima Lucky Luke-album.

Billy the Kid returns in this issue. Lucky Luke has to escort him to a court appearance and, of course, this proves difficult. They go back to a town seen in an earlier issue where the people are all terrified of Billy. There's yet another bar fight, a destroyed jail and Billy eating too much candy.

There's bandits, Native Americans, tthe cavalry, more Billy escapes and captures and another prison. As usual it's funny and it's neat to see other characters reused.

Ξεκαρδιστική ιστορία με το αχτύπητο δίδυμο Λούκυ Λουκ - Μπίλυ ο Τρομερός, γεγονός που με κάνει να σκέφτομαι για ποιο λόγο δεν χρησιιμοποιήθηκε παρά μόνο δυο φορές ο χαρακτήρας του Μπίλυ του Τρομερού. Σίγουρα αντί για την υπερβολική δόση Ντάλτονς θα μπορούσε σε κάποιες ιστορίες να χρησιμοποιηθεί ξανά ο Μπίλυ ο Τρομερός.

Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι με ξετρέλανε ιδιαίτερα αυτή η ιστορία. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, ήταν σαν μια τυπική ιστορία όπου ο Λούκυ Λουκ είναι υπεύθυνος για τους Ντάλτον, μόνο που στη θέση τους ήταν ο Billy the Kid.

Le retour du Kid !

Lucky Luke est chargé de conduire Billy the kid dans une ville où on a trouvé des gens suffisamment courageux (ou fous ?) pour juger Billy.

On retrouve avec bonheur le duo père / fils qui fait la réussite comique de ces deux personnages. Luke dans le rôle du père, Billy dans celui du fils (à son corps défendant ceci dit) of course.
