Apples & Arrows is a collection of novellas and novelettes that rediscovers the macabre and magical world of Snow White in various fantasy settings.
A stepsister struggles with her jealousy toward the girl everyone else finds the most beautiful in the land. A hunter fights against duty and love. A huntsman embraces the frozen tundra to save the princess he believes is worth everything. A guard hides who he really is to protect the one he loves most. A future empress lays dying after eating a forbidden fruit, and her closest friend travels to the forsaken lands to find a cure. Each Snow White has her adversary, and each hero will face endless blockades in the way to save the one he or she loves.
Interspersed with poetry, this collection is filled with hope, heart, and the fight for a happily ever after.
Moriah is the author of the young adult fantasy Heart of the Sea and various short stories. She is a two-time graduate from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts and a Master’s in Library and Information Science. It's been said you can find perusing bookstores, attempting to persuade strangers to read her favorite books, oscillating between watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy (her husband’s favorite) or Harry Potter (hers), and keeping her books from the clutches of her two feisty cats.
From wooded forests to mossy swamps and snowy banks, readers will find themselves immersed in the worlds within this enchanting collection of Snow White reimaginings. Fresh yet familiar, Apples & Arrows is a must read for fans of fairy tales and stories of unconditional, death-defying love.
This collection is full of novelettes and poems centered around a Snow White theme.
Hunter will Slay by Anne J. Hill (3⭐️) Poetry
Raven Black by Crystal D. Grant (4⭐️) About 29 pages, this novelette follows Snow White’s stepsister as she deals with jealousy. The romance was just kisses, intimacy level 1.
The Sweetest Fruit by Anne J. Hill (3⭐️) Poetry
Girl of the Swamp by Vanessa E. Howard (4⭐️) About 53 pages, this novelette follows a girl who has water magic and her stepmother, the duchess, who wants magic for herself and goes to dark lengths to get it. The romance was just kisses, intimacy level 1.
Hers Alone by Anna J. Hill (3⭐️) Poetry
The Snowbound by Abigail F. (4⭐️) At about 88 pages, this longer novelette took Snow White and added twists and turns. A magic mirror, a huntsman, and an evil Prince, sorcery, frost, wolves, and more. One aspect that detracted from this really good plot for me was that there were “people” who basically seemed to be, in look and action, almost like reanimated corpses. They were made to be this way by the evil vampires, who also sought to duly turn our Princess into a soulless vampire. It was definitely a unique read. I appreciated that the hero was a Christian. The romance was just kisses, intimacy level 1.
Poisoned Apples by Hannah Carter (4⭐️) Poetry
Natural Talents by L.A. Thornhill (4.5⭐️) At 92 pages, this Christian fantasy is the longest in the collection and my favorite thus far. With elves, merpeople, dwarves, light and dark magic, an evil step mother, and a kidnapped princess, this romantic fantasy has it all. Sweet romance, danger, sacrifice, and more. This was my first by this author but I’d like to read more. The romance was just kisses, intimacy level 1.
Heart by Anne J. Hill (3⭐️) Poetry
The Bear Princess by Moriah Chavis The last novelette in this collection comes in around 65 pages. I DNFed the book early on as it just wasn’t engaging me and I was getting a bit confused.
I loved this anthology! It had some of the most unique Snow White retellings I've ever read! What if Snow had a step sister? What if the story was set in a swamp? What if there were magical polar bears? What if Snow was a vampire? I honestly don't think there was a bad story in the bunch. They were all great stories, with engaging characters! The poetry between each story was beautiful and stirring! This is a must read for anyone who loves Snow White!
Apples and Arrows is a collection of short stories and poetry, based on the tale of Snow White, from different authors.
Snow White is one of my favorite fairy tales and I loved reading through this compilation full of fresh takes on an old story.
You may not know this about me, but I really love poetry. And the poetry in this book was all so well done and fun to read. The short stories were all very unique while still holding pretty true to the heart of Snow White.
I really enjoyed all these quick reads. Each author did a beautiful job weaving their worlds together and I found myself drawn into each of the retellings.
I received an advanced review copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion and thoughts
