Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
Friendship. I'm so soft. And I can't wait to read soft headcanons or fanfics or anything, really because these kids deserve to be protected and experience fun and just- a break, please give them one.
Soul Eater, Vol. 8 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next four chapters (28–31) of the on-going manga series.
Mifune defeats Black Star, and Sid Barrett destroys the research facility. As Mifune retreats, he gives Black Star and Tsubaki Nakatsukasa advice on how to control the power of the Uncanny Sword.
Meanwhile Medusa, who survived her battle with Franken Stein by hiding in the body of a snake, takes over the body of a young girl in Death City to use as a host. She has her minions infiltrate Arachnophobia, planning to topple her sister Arachne's organization.
Death the Kid is dispatched to find a demon tool in a train that has never stopped running for 100 years. He finds the train, with an Arachnophobia agent and a Mizune sister joining the hunt for the tool. Death the Kid manages to find the tool, and finds his father's signature on it alongside that of Eibon, the physical embodiment of madness through knowledge – the tool's creator.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo. It tells the true fate of Medusa, who help resurrect Asuna, but supposedly died in the process, she survived by turning into a snake and takes control of a body of a girl in order to infiltrate and control Arachnophobia. Meanwhile, Death the Kid is dispatched to find a demon tool created by Eibon, which interestingly enough has his father’s name on it with the physical embodiment of madness through knowledge.
All in all, Soul Eater, Vol. 8 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
I was hoping for a bit more action in this book but I'm still very pleased with it. The fight scenes with Kid and his guns were awesome. The little seed of doubt towards his father will definitely come back up again. And poor Crona can't seem to catch a break. Once it seems like they're getting settled, Medusa rears her big ugly head and messes it all up. I hope Crona will decide not to spy for her. She needs to die, for real this time.
It’s Black Star against the bodyguard Mifune! Mifune doesn’t have much choice in the matter, as the little witch Angela is being held hostage. Black Star has come to help Sid, who is to destroy the demon tool Mifune admires Black Star’s Uncanny sword, but is Tsubaki any match for Mifune’s Infinite One-sword style? When Tsibaki tries to persuade Mifune to become a teacher at DWMA, where he can work with children, he tells her the story of how he and Angela met.
Back at DWMA, Maka is still recovering in the infirmary, and gets annoyed when Soul and Black Star begin whispering together in front of her and won’t explain what’s going on.
Something evil is on the loose in Death City, as evidenced by the snake which has wriggled its way into a little girl, out for a walk with her mommy. When Sid returns with the blueprints for the demon tool, he’s surprised that Shinigami-sama tells him to seal it inside the Secret Vault for now, rather than destroy it. What can Shinigami-sama want with such a thing? Isn’t it dangerous to keep it intact? What if someone managed to get their hands on it?
Back at DWMA, Maka has returned to class. Tsubaki is concerned about Black Star. He keeps challenging other people and getting into fights. But why? Dr. Stein is trying to teach the students about cooperation and teamwork, but that isn’t working out so well. Meanwhile, at Arachnophobia headquarters, an unexpected player shows up in the form of Arachne’s younger sister, Medusa! Death the Kid is throwing a party, and Tsubaki has made all the food, although Liz keeps taking credit for having done it, in order to impress a guy. But Patty and Soul put the kibosh on that plan pretty effectively! Kid unexpectedly tells Patty and Liz to come with him to the Sahara, by orders of the Shinigami. Their mission is to stop the Runaway Express. Shinigami suspects that it’s being powered by a Demon Tool, so they must overtake it and capture the tool! However, that means going toe to toe with with the Fisher King!
Crona is thrilled to be making friends at DWMA, even if Ragnarok can be rather surly to them at the best of times. But things are looking up for him… until a certain someone from his past shows up, someone he has always had trouble saying no to. Will Medusa use the child she was so quick to toss out? And for what purpose?
Two of my favorite things about this action-packed volume of Soul Eater are seeing Mifune again and seeing Death the Kid in action again. I like Mifune, and I hope that ultimately they’ll be able to persuade him to become a teacher at DWMA. With his love of children, I think he would be a natural. But for that to happen, there has to be a place there for Angela too. Which means some attitude readjustment regarding witches. As for Death, he’s one of my favorite characters, quirks and all. Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how very powerful he is, and watching him in action only serves to reinforce that.
My only lament is there is not much of Maka and Soul, but now that Maka is feeling better, I hope to see more of them in future volumes. Also, not much of Spirit, Maka’s father. I can’t help but feel he is actually growing and maturing. He does love his daughter very much (plus I think he’s cute lol).
The big mystery here concerns Shinigami and his growing collection of demon tools. Does he have ulterior motives for not destroying them? I don’t believe he’s doing it for bad reasons, maybe misguided ones? Hard to say at this point, too little information.
Another great volume, looking forward to more of the same!
In a world where witches, minions, and tainted souls exist, there must also be those that stand against them. These people are known as Weapon Meisters and their Weapons. They are charged with devouring tainted souls and protecting the world.
Black★Star and Tsubaki have found themselves in quite the battle – and it all started because you know who was being his usual self. While this fight is ending, new information comes to light about the latest threat the Meisters and Weapons will face.
Review:
Okay, so there's a lot to unpack in Soul Eater Vol. 8. It has a fair bit of character development, not to mention a lot of information about the new villain on the scene. Oh! And let's not forget the fights.
This volume spends a lot of time setting up events later in the series. First, there's that fight, which leads directly to new Arachnophobia information. Then there's Death the Kid's arc further pushes the tension. Finally, we have a big Medusa revelation and an update on Crona.
As I said, it's a lot. And there's plenty of subtext for fans to look closely at. Some of it will help connect the dots later, while others are the perfect fodder for theory-crafting. In other words, it's my favorite type of subtle detailing.
Highlights: Shinigami Paranormal Humorous Has an Anime
This one was great. It had all the things I like about this series: Plot twists that I don't understand, Mifune, Death the Kid and his dynamic with the Thompson sisters, Mifune, Chrona being mentally ill and pathetic, Mifune, Medusa being an insufferable bitch, Mifune, umm... and Angela. She's an actual baby I love her. Lizard witch :3 I just want to see that man being a teacher. That is all I want for him. I feel really bad for Chrona in this arc because they literally just want to be happy and their stupid ass mother comes and ruins everything. Let Chrona be happy, please. Thank you. He\she\they deserve it.
It's really weird for me to read shounen classics because I am literally the opposite of the person they are created for. I don't I could ever handle mangas like Bleach or Berserk because they are just really not for me. Even in this manga, I find myself thinking "Yeah, this would have been a lot cooler if I was a ten-year-old boy". But whatever, after reading this I'll read Marioty the Patriot and I'll have some fun. Or maybe reread Jujutsu Kaisen, as I haven't touched that series for two years now.
There was a lot more action than in the previous one. I really enjoyed this manga. I'm not convinced I appreciate the new witch who's making its appearance. That night I had insomnia so I read this manga to fall asleep, I can confirm that the result has been the opposite of it. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next manga.
I think the anime goes in a different path than what was in the manga so that's interesting.
In the previous book, Maka got stung by the witch arachne and is paralyzed. Black star, inwardly, is defensive of his friends and follows sid on his mission to get revenge for maka's state. There he battles milfune again.
Medusa is still alive and taken over the body of a young girl, and infiltrates arachne's organization to take her down.
Death the kid, Liz and patty are dispatched to get a demon tool that has been running in the desert for 100 years.
Story is getting more complicated and it's great. On to the next book.
Don't mind me, I'm just casually re-reading the entire manga for the 5th time or so because A) it's one of my comfort series and I need all the comfort I can get right now, B) I own the entire thing physically so it's right there, and C) everyone is talking about fall/ Halloween reads and SE fits that to a T.
Gonna give all the volumes 5 stars as a default. There's plenty I could complain about if I wanted, namely the unnecessary fanservice/ weird sexualization of teen characters, but I'm not gonna do that right now. It pops up rarely enough that I can just pretend it doesn't exist.
This was a decent volume. The art quality and set-up is definitely staying constant with what we saw in Volume 7 so it's an improvement over-all. There's nothing particularly special about this volume, but it's obvious it's setting up the plot for the next arc and waiting to really get into the good stuff!
The return of a nemesis thought defeated means trouble for DWMA and for Crona in particular. There's a great long action sequence featuring Death the Kid and Patty and Liz. And what secrets and ulterior motives might Shinigami-sama be hiding? A lot of good stuff in this volume.
Mifune!!! I love that samurai, what a sweetie. Black Star is always amazing and I love how powerful he's becoming. Kid is such a badass while also being a total teenager and Patty's chaotic energy is the best!
