Dr. Glenn Shepard was raised on a farm in eastern Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship and majored in psychology. As an undergraduate, he lettered in wrestling for three years in a row. Then, he went on to become the only person in UVA history to letter in wrestling again in his sophomore year in medical school.
After completion of med school at UVA, he went to Vanderbilt where he completed his residency in general and cardiovascular surgery. He spent two years in the Army at the Ft. Gordon Army Hospital in Augusta, Georgia and The Second Surgical Hospital in An Khe, Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he wrote his first work of fiction, Surge, which is on his back burner of works to dig out of the attic and publish, with major revisions, in the future.
For 28 years, he founded and directed The Peninsula Cranio-Facial deformities clinic that was staffed by volunteer medical, dental, social services, psychology, and speech pathology experts. The group treated over five hundred patients with cleft lips and palates, as well as a variety of deformities of the face and hand.
After the massive earthquake in Haiti in January, 2010, Dr. Shepard emerged from retirement and joined the Notre Dame Hospital unit in Leogane, Haiti for a 10 day rotation. His empathy for the people and their problems as well as his admiration for the contributions of time and talent from medical personnel from all over the world greatly inspired his second novel, Relief Aid, Haiti.
Not For Profit, Dr. Shepard's first thriller, follows plastic surgeon Dr. Scott James as he tries to clear his name of two murders of which he's been falsely accused. As James hunts down the evidence that might free him, he faces a barrage of threats to his life and liberty—and makes one chilling discovery after another.
A interesting story encompassing two causes which are drawn together in very strange circumstances.
The author uses his experiences to write a thriller which keeps the reader involved on every page .The use of the language and short paragraphs detailing the main characters movements make it a very easy read to follow and enjoy.
You become involved in the story and feel the emotions that our hero is suffering and have to admire his courage and bravery in the fight to prove his innocence and to restore his reputation .
In every book I read I try and find or see a message or point of view the writer is trying to make. In this book I think the message is do we know who is really protecting or looking after us? Also where does the real threat to our life's come from?.
A renown doctor is accused of murder and at the same time a terrorist group are threatening to attack. In the course of proving his innocence his investigation and leads draw the two together.
Overall an exciting page turning thriller with up to date threats which could happen or effect anyone . The author has used his knowledge in both the medical and the army profession to produce a noteworthy story which will be enjoyed by many.
It was a pleasure to be asked to review this novel and I wish the author all the best for future publications, and hope to be on his mailing list.
I was given an electronic copy by Mystery House and NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
The beginning of this book is so absurd, with main character Dr. Scott James being accused of multiple crimes. I find it difficult to believe that a respected member of society would be charged for a crime with circumstantial evidence pointing in his direction. It would have been easy for the police to check his alibi for Dr. Carey's stabbing, as Dr. James was on the phone with his wife at the time. It would have been easy for the police to check his hands and clothing for gunshot residue, which would have cleared him for Office Wilson's shooting. With this, and other plot lines running concurrently, it was difficult to follow any of the stories. Adding terrorism and civilian contractors into the mix muddied the book with too many ideas. I found the conversations between characters to be stilted and forced, with a plot that was all over the place. With some editing, this book has the promise to be a good mystery/thriller.
Our main character Dr. Scott James, a plastic surgeon, finds out after a minor surgery on his secretary that murder is afoot and not just one. The police and his wife believe he is the murderer as he was the only one there. He hides and searches for answers on who is framing him. Through this hunt he is going to find out what is going on and that terrorism ties into it all.
I do not read thrillers often. That being said, this one did keep me interested for a while. I did like the thought of the main character Dr. Scott James falling for Elizabeth especially after his wife immediately believe the worse in her husband once second after hearing about it. What A B.I.T.C.H.! It is funny but even though she was a background character I think I hated the wife the most.
The thought that everyone was blaming the doctor for every murder that kept happening seemed far fetched. The police barely did any investigating once they got to the seen and then would start barking at Dr. James that he did it. I had to go back and reread chapters because sometimes I did not realize I was reading another person or what they had to do with the story I was already processing.
Sometimes the book was too over the place other time there was just enough thrill to keep me reading. Would I read another from this series? My answer would be maybe. It was not bad it was not great. It was just a typical thriller.
Sorry, not my kind of novel. First, disjointed hopping among the good guys and villains motivated me to ask myself "who in hell am I reading about now?" Second, I like orchids but not enough to struggle through endless paragraphs detailing watering, feeding, root patterns, environmental needs, etc. Third, weak story line when the reader new well in advance that Dr. James (the protagonist) would prevail regardless of ridiculous police investigative "findings" of murder. Fourth, and most repellent, graphic details of sexual torture and mutilation. Not in any way my kind of pleasant or satisfying reading. I rarely quit reading a book midstream but absolutely necessary in this case.
I have to firstly get out that I was not sure if I was really going to like the book from the beginning. It starts with one story and then goes back into time with a totally different genre of story. I did have to reread some of the chapters while I was getting into the story to make sense about what was going on in the story. The author does hop around a lot and the imagery of the orchids kind of threw me a little bit throughout the story line. I still am kind of confused about where they fit in with the story line of a mystery and crime drama. Even though the stories did jump around a little bit, the imagery did everything justice. I felt like I was part of everything from the baby to Alpha Charlie. I am a crime drama and mystery type of girl so the gore that the author included with some of the scenes did not really bother me, but the scenes may bother some readers that are not used to it. The fact that the author was an M.D. was apparent throughout the novel with how much detail was given to the scenes with the medical procedures. The twist that came with the bombing of the hospital really tugged at my heart strings. Keyes was then a character to me that was heartless and selfish. As long as nothing was going to happen to her, then the show could go on as planned. The plot was one that took great planning and effort on the author’s part to make the scenes so real. Even though this novel states that there is adult content, I did not think that it was anymore than others that claim the same thing and actually a little less than those that have made the best sellers list without a hitch or second thought. I actually thought that those scenes made the reader take their mind off of all the crime and drama. If you are a reader that does not like murder scenes to go into super detail then this is the crime drama for you. It was definitely not as graphic as the author could have gone with the scenes considering his medical background. Overall, once you get through the bouncing between story lines at the beginning of the novel, the story meshes together amazingly and had me hooked to the end wanting to know what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book with a FOUR star rating as a thrilling and captivating crime drama/mystery. I look forward to seeing what other works this author has in store for us. I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
I was given a copy of this ebook in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I have a confession to make. I am guilty of a grievous sin. When Glenn Shepard approached me and asked me to read this fiction novel, I did not investigate it fully.
He told me it was "a new medical thriller about a surgeon who gets framed for murder, and who has to vindicate himself in order to halt a deadly terrorist plot. If you like compelling, action-filled thrillers, then I think you will love this book" and I accepted it solely based on that description. I really should have gone a step further and read the blurb.
Not for Profit is everything that Glenn said it would be, but it is also more.
The blurb does better justice to this very complicated and action-packed story. There is terrorism, many murders, lots of bad guys and you are never quite sure who to trust. It is very well written and the plot is complex, yet believable. (There is some pretty graphic violence and a bit of graphic sex - just a disclaimer in case that kind of thing bothers you.)
The problem is, I don't really like stories about covert military ops, terrorist cells, espionage and the whole shabang. I do love murder mysteries and there was certainly a lot of murder and quite a bit of mystery. If this type of story were my thing I would be screaming this book's praise, because it really is good.
But this book is not really my thing, and while I can appreciate the book's potential for greatness I can't say I loved it. If you love action packed stories of terrorism, espionage, AND you kind of like orchids (did I not mention the orchids?), you really WILL love Not for Profit. I liked it. I just didn't love it.
I wasn't so sure when I first started reading the book if I was going to like it or not but the more I read, the more I got into the story. It does take a little while for it to kick in but once it does, Dr. James runs with the ball and the action never lets up all the way until the end.
I wasn't too crazy about the weird Herb Waters and his wife's sex scenes, but for whatever reason, I guess they played a role in the book. The only thing that made me a little skittish was that Keyes was helping terrorists who planned on bombing a whole hospital of innocent people just to get at one person and she seemed to not have any care as long as she didn't die.
And I was very surprised that Dr. James still stayed with her and still had sex with her. That was the only thing that didn't set well with me. I know men are men and sex is everything but really? With a terrorist? I know in the end she turned out okay but during the bulk of the book, he didn't know one way or the other which way she would land. So, that was a little unnerving but maybe that was the point. Maybe they wanted us to discuss that and get the conversation going, but hopefully, next time, let's not sleep with the enemy.
There are quite a few people who get killed during this story but they don't go into too much detail so you won't have to read graphic details. I was sorry to see that they killed off the good guy detective, though along with the good cop who liked Dr. James at his practice. Sigh, I wish he could have kept at least one of them as his friend. But definitely glad he got rid of his wife!
Otherwise, it was an action packed crime/thriller book that will keep you glued to the story and finishing it to the end just so you can safely say all is well.
I really liked the book, but felt at times I had to reread certain chapters as we hopped around a lot i felt in the whole idea and story line. I liked the imagery of the characters from Scott to Alpha Charlie and felt they were well defined and pictured. I am not a blood, guts and gore book reader therefore I was kind of off set by the murders and decapitations that were prevalent and in great detail. It was not overly sexualized yet for some readers it may cause some uneasiness as certain scenes are very visual. The idea of him and his Orchids were kind of off the wall and bizarre to focus on throughout the entire book, I mean the details were great for Orchids but belong in a botany book not a crime, drama, mystery. After the first few chapters I did stop reading about the orchids because really it was just not something that interested me. I read to enjoy my quiet time not learn a lesson on flowers I do not own. The idea of the author being an M.D was very pronounced as it was in great detail he could create a picture in your head of the actual medical procedure and the great lengths he went to explain his twists and turns. Would I recommend the book? Yes, to someone who enjoys a good thrill ride. I love to read and would more than likely be interested in other books by this offer, as his first and third characters did not really bother my perception to much. He does need to stop using his !!!!!!!!! that does kind of get to the reader, as we understand a point is being made. Overall I felt it was a good read**I did receive this book for review from the author in exchange for an honest review**
Oh no! One of those books that reinforce my dislike of the star rating system and I find myself in such a dilemma reviewing. Do I give it a four star rating for being a fast paced, intelligent novel that combines the medical with the military (not to mention orchids)? OR do I rate it three out of five because, peppered with a tad too much physical violence and worse still, sexual violence, it wasn't altogether to my taste?
Star ratings aside.
A novel that certainly lives up to the claims on the back cover. 'An action-packed thrill ride that will have you questioning suspects, motives and outcomes until the very last page'? Yes, Not For Profit was all of this ...... and more.
As a very much up-to-date, suspense-filled thriller this is a read that has it all - terrorism, politics, more technology (drones included) than you can shake a stick at, and male and female characters that are on an equal footing in all ways. And yes, the orchids.
Such an original addition, I found the occasional tracts devoted to the history and care of main character, Dr James, beloved orchids a welcome (and fascinating) relief from the violence which though realistic rather than gratuitous I still struggled with.
Definitely for adult readers only. Essentially a good read but one I suspect may well appeal more to men.

Wow. I finished this book in a day and a half. I could not put it down.
I have to say, it was quite confusing. For most of the book, I really didn’t know who was who (with the exception of maybe four people – Harris, James, Keyes, and Waters. Oh, and Alpha Charlie. Outside of that, I really didn’t know who was who or what was really going on. But I could not put the book down regardless.
There were many different stories within the story. You follow many different scenarios, people, groups, schemes. It was hard to keep track of it all. But again, I just couldn’t put it down regardless of my frustration to keep everyone and everything straight.
I had to know what was what, who was who. It drove me to keep reading.
The suspense kept pushing me forward.
I will also admit, I had been warned of adult content, but some of the content was vulgar. There were a handful of “adult content” areas in the book, I’d say one, possibly two parts were vulgar.
The book was also violent and descriptive. If you are not a fan of violence (with descriptive words that bring to life the imagery) I would not recommend this book.
I personally thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Although it was very confusing, it all cleared itself up in the end (as I figured it would).
If you enjoy suspense and action, I would recommend this read.
Author Glenn Shepard MD uses his extensive medical knowledge and literary genius to spin a tale of deep intrigue. In his story Not For Profit we are introduced to Dr. Scott James an amazingly skilled plastic surgeon, whom is lovingly obsessed with his orchids. James is professional yet nurturing in personality and is highly respected. Alternatively we are also shown an immeasurably accurate drone operator working on contract for the U.S. Government half a world away in Afghanistan. He is only known as Alpha Charlie. Charlie uses drones to hunt down and destroy terrorists. Now that seems like that would be enough.. but no Mr. Shepard throws us a curve ball. He adds a cast of terrorists. They are planning some sort of attack, but who knows what! The terrorists lay low in a small town sending out secret correspondences and readying themselves for their next move. Mr. Shepard weaves a plot exceedingly cloaked in mystery. He shows the reader glimpses of three intricate, seemingly unrelated story lines. Although the jumping back and forth was a bit difficult to follow the winding, twisted path towards a shocking outcome was well worth it!!!! ** Note** This book contains adult content, sex and violence
Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Review: I was truly hopeful that this book would live up to the synopsis that that author emailed me awhile back. But it didn't. It failed horrifically and the only reason I even finished the book was that I felt obligated to since the author had so kindly sent me a copy.
I don't know what was worse, the botany lesson at the beginning of every chapter or the vivid descriptions of ritualistic rape and murder throughout this book.Or even the horrifically one dimensional characters. The dialogue was simplistic and not very interesting at all. None of the characters were likable which is a really big deal to me. If they are likable, then sometimes that can save a book. Not this book and not these characters.
It was all just too much for me. I'm giving it one star for the sole reason that I managed to finish this book. There were many times that I just wanted to throw it far away from my body and never look at it again. Yes it was that horrible.Maybe someone else will really enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me.
This book has a great story. It starts out quickly with a murder. It gives no immediate clue who did it or why, which I love. I don't mind knowing who the murderer is in a book at times, but the best ones are often the ones where you are as clueless as the people trying to figure it out in the story. This book does that very well. I enjoyed that there was more to the story line than just the murder. Terrorists, military, and the Dr. being framed, all go hand in hand to make this a thrilling book.
The reason I only gave this story four stars is that I just couldn't lose myself entirely into the book. I don't know exactly what the issue was. The writing is good, the characters are believable, and the story line is engaging, but I kept finding myself not completely lost in the story. Maybe I was just having one of my off days.
I recommend this book for any adult reader that likes a good thriller or murder mystery. This contains graphic scenes of violence as well as many graphic sex scenes.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy for review. Regardless, all opinions are my own and were in no way influenced. I was not required to write a positive review.
I love a good thriller, but to keep a story line going, to keep the reader guessing and come up with imaginative twists and turns is often difficult for writers. Author Glenn Shepard, MD did an amazing job of drawing me into his world and keeping me eager to turn the next page. This is his first thriller and I hope to see many more from him.
There was so much going on with the characters and plot. A medical and military thriller, I could tell the author was pulling from real experience and knowledge to craft his tale. From Scott James to Ethel Keyes and the looming threat from al-Qaeda operatives his well developed characters rarely had a down moment in the story and you will want to keep up and find out how it all ends.
I couldn't initially predict how his various story lines would come together, but I was not disappointed with the surprising connections. Modern threats and topical situations for our present world conditions, this is a great reason to stay indoors on a rainy day.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
With all the changes in healthcare and insurance these days I have noticed that more and more doctors are switching from giving medical care to writing fiction--I am not sure this is a good sign but they sure can write!
This is definitely a book that has twists and turns and counter turns. It was hard to keep up with who were the good guys and who the bad since the lines seemed to blur. An intriguing novel about terrorists both from the US and from the Middle East and how a hospital administrator and plastic surgeon, once long time friends turn into bitter enemies. Be careful how you treat people-it may come back to haunt you. I'm really not sure how Orchids come into play but there is a lot of information about them at the beginning of each chapter. The plastic surgeon grows them in his surgical suite. The title of the book is easier to understand. A Not for Profit Hospital is being sold out--to become a Profit Hospital which would essentially deny services to those most needing them.
Not For Profit is a mysterious and suspenseful story. A bit of modern warfare mixed with love, medical know-how and a bit more violence than I usually like. Dr. Shephard has a way to his writing that keeps you captured in his plot, even if you do not follow where certain people and events come together in this story. Trying to figure out who was the “good” who was the “bad”, and who was just plain “ugly” was difficult sometimes. Well, some of the “ugly” characters were not hard to figure out. Like Dr. Scott James, I was confused by the events and happenings going on around him. Then, as the book starts drawing to a close…. Pow! In the end the story comes together and all of a sudden several things and people begin to become more clear. The story may not have been to my usual liking originally…. The superb writing skills of the author is top-notch!
I never knew that Orchids were so informative. There is so much about them that I never knew. My sister inherited Orchids from her mother in law. One her father in law grew from seed. So I was fascinated by this plot. The medical drama plot was also interesting to me because I know very little about medical terminology. The Terrorist plot reminded me of WarGames. One person can make a huge difference, good or bad. I recommend this book for mystery, spy, medical and regular thriller fans. I am giving this book a 5/5. It kept me reading and questioning all the characters until the very end. Looking for a thriller to pass the time between now and Thanksgiving? Look no more! Not for Profit by Glenn Shepard, MD is a look into a mysterious world filled with terrorism, hospital, and intrigue. Not for Profit starts off slowly, but rapidly draws you in as you look for the what seems like a tenuous connection between Dr. James Scott, the terrorist cell, and a hospital administrator. Shepard masterfully creates a small town hospital complete with a corrupt head of the hospital who seems out to get a small time plastic surgeon. You may ask yourself "why" and "how does this mash up with terrorism?" and "What's with all the orchids???" I know I did, and the ending made me glad to have pushed through the slow start. You'll find yourself unwilling to it down, even unable to at times.
Not for profit was a very enjoyable thriller about a doctor being framed for several crimes that had ties to terrorist activities. There were a lot of plot lines that by the end of the book came together harmoniously, but at many points throughout the story I felt myself feeling very confused.
I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and character development of this story but there were a few aspects of the book and writing style that made it a little slow for me and hard to get through at points, however, with a few minor tweaks I could see this book being a best seller.
I decided to read this book as a change of pace from my usual genre and though it was a bit on the slow side I really got into it about halfway through and couldn't wait to see how it all fit together.
A thriller from the start, this book takes the reader into an imaginative story line that is all too realistic. Alpha Charlie is a civilian contractor who is the absolute master of the terrorist-killing drone. His secret control center in America is the target of an ISIS terrorist cell, but first hey have to find it. Dr. Scott James is sucked into the action as mysterious murder start occurring around him, and he becomes the primary suspect. The suspense grows as the narrative shifts between the various factions at play, The problem is determining who the good guys and bad guys really are. The story is very engrossing, and all too real. It could be truth, not fiction. It is well-written, believable, and has characters that are real people. I am looking forward to more from this author.
I got what I hoped for - a fast paced thrilling book easy to read. However what I did not bank on was the main character Dr Scott James a plastic surgeon getting involved with terrorism and drone warfare. Don't worry I have not spoiled it. The plot is fairly straight forward but the locations and characters are not, adding a little mystery into this very exciting all action thriller. The subject matter is very up to date with drone with war and terrorism in the Middle East. Alpha Charlie is a U.S. contractor making a fortune from his hobby, a gamer at heart but now zapping real people on demand. You ask yourself the question how can a plastic surgeon get involved with all this? You will have to read it to find out.
Ever read a book that leaves you mentally exhausted? That's how I felt after reading Not For Profit. I let out a big "whew!". There were tons of twists, turns and surprises. The characters were not ones that gave you "warm fuzzies" at all. I'm bad about trying to figure the whos and whys when reading a book and this one kept me on the edge of my seat. It was easy to tell the author was knowledgeable of the events and procedures that he was writing about - the details and sequences were not just from second or third hand research. Overall, this was a good read and took me out of my comfort zone.
I really enjoyed this book, although it was difficult to keep up with at the beginning. It bounced back and forth between Dr. James, Alpha Charlie (an incredibly accurate drone operator) and terrorists and I struggled to keep up with everyone. But partway through the book everything merged together well and Dr. Shepard's writing really shone. The plot twists will definitely keep you on your toes, literally to the very last page! You'll love some characters, hate some and be completely befuddled by others.
*Please note, this book contains graphic violence and sex. Since it deals with terrorist acts the scenes go along with the plot line, but it may be too graphic for some people.
This book is like a roller coaster with no off switch!
I have worked in the healthcare field for years and LOVE a good medical mystery, however I can be a bit picky if the author doesn’t know his technical medical details. Glenn Shepard, definitely knows his stuff!!! Aside from the medical mystery, this story is packed full of politics, romance, and more!
I read the book over the period of a couple days, but when I got towards the end I could not put it down and stayed up till 3am to finish it. I can NOT wait for the authors next book!
An amazing thriller perfect for anyone looking for a great book to read on these cold winter nights by the fireplace. Dr. Shephard is an amazingly detailed writer and really paints a picture for you.
I will warn you that the beginning starts a bit confusing and jumps back and forth a bit but it will all come together throughout the story. I know some people can't handle books like this but being a big James Patterson fan and being used to those types of stories and jumps really prepared me for this book.
It really is a great book and you won't regret picking it up!!!
Looking for a book that has everything from drama, murder, mystery, a love story and even terrorists? Then look no further, Not for Profit is definitely the book for you. It takes you around the world to right back home in the Bible Belt expertly weaving mystery and love in a way that makes you crave more! It is riveting, intriguing, and Dr. Shepard parallels the life cycles of different orchids with what is going on in the book. This book had me captivated until the last word, and then had me begging for more!
Great book! Definitely a win in my book. I love murdery/mystery books with a medical background and this one is one of those. Watch as the doctor tries to prove his innocence with the mysterious woman who says she can help. Pick it up and read it for yourself. I recommend it!
I was provided with a copy of this book for free from Beck Valley Books in exchange for a review; however, all thoughts and opinions are my own!
But needed a good editors, murders at the beginning, what happened with the arrest and bond didn't made any sense. There has to be court appearance so the bond could be set. Lost count of who was the good guys or bad guys. House was bugged, first they go outside to talk, immediately after freely they were talking inside. It will make a good movie for the lovers of gun fights, blood, Chase and some sex.
I loved the book. It was exciting and everything I love in a thriller. I will look for more books from this author. The only complaint I have about the book is at the beginning of some chapters it has a paragraph about orchids. It had nothing to do with the story and was distracting to me. Other than that I would recommend it
