1 cheating ex. 24 hours. 8 men who volunteered for a prank and got emotionally unionized.
On April 1st, April Feuller carries a twelve-dollar cupcake three blocks with the fragile optimism of a woman hoping for a surprise proposal. Instead, she finds Chad stress-testing his executive desk with Brenda from HR. His defense? It was a prank.
April doesn't scream. She doesn't sob in the bathroom like a victim in a corporate training video titled Managing Big Feelings in Small Spaces. (She does cry in a supply closet for five minutes, because she's not made of stone. She's made of spreadsheets and spite.) She tells her best friend she has a plan. She does not have a plan.
Eight men opt in like it's a group project, not a preassembled harem, just people who took "hands-on help" extremely literally. Together they build April's very specific vision of Tuesday-level revenge: fake fiancé, autocorrect from hell, expense report gauntlet, taco coupon with probable mob ties. She thought it ended at sunrise. The men were not informed.
A self-aware why-choose romantic comedy where the fake engagement becomes real, the revenge becomes a relationship, and nobody is surprised except April. The stakes are petty, the orgasms are not, and everyone — including Chad — gets exactly what they deserve.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ High heat. High page count. Standalone Why-Choose / Reverse Harem. One FMC. Eight MMCs. No MM. HEA guaranteed.
Effy Bloom reads a lot and writes what she wants to see exist. By the time it’s done the characters have usually taken it somewhere she didn’t plan. She’s made her peace with this.
The author's biggest mistake with this book was committing to the 24-hour plot device. As a regular reader of Why Choose, I'm not one to slut shame FMCs, but geez Louise, this FMC went from breaking up with her cheating boyfriend, to hooking up with eight different men (multiple times each) in a 24-hour period. And not all of these men were existing friends and aquaintences. At least three of them were complete strangers. I wanted to cheer her on, but I spent most of the book just feeling pity for the woman's poor vagina. It spent more time actively being used and abused than it spent recovering.
Even if I could get past that, the writing was not good. I can forgive the occasional tense change, but there was nothing occasional about it. There were sentences that started out past tense, switched to present tense, and then back to past tense.
The guys were also painfully cliche. For example, in every new room the characters entered, the chef searched for snacks and drinks, the IT guy played with the lighting and sound-system, while the singer hummed and the accountant analyzed the space for symmetry. Are these men's occupations the entirety of their personality?
This book said “revenge era,” clocked in, and never clocked out.
The 8 Pranks of April is chaotic brilliance wrapped in sharp humor, unapologetic spice, and the kind of emotional undercurrent that sneaks up on you mid-laugh and goes for the throat. I went in expecting petty revenge… I got a full-scale, expertly orchestrated takedown with a side of self-discovery and a lineup of men who clearly missed the memo on “casual involvement.”
April Feuller? An icon. A woman who finds her boyfriend committing workplace sins on company furniture and responds not with a meltdown, but with strategy. Spreadsheets and spite, indeed. Her evolution from “what is my life” to “watch me rewrite the narrative” is chef’s kiss—messy, empowering, and deeply satisfying.
And the men? Eight of them. EIGHT. Each one bringing a different flavor to the table like a dangerously attractive charcuterie board of bad decisions and excellent choices. What starts as a prank spirals into something far more layered, where loyalty, chemistry, and emotional vulnerability all start elbowing their way into the spotlight.
The humor is razor-sharp and self-aware in the best way. It leans into the absurdity without losing emotional weight, balancing laugh-out-loud moments with quieter beats that hit surprisingly deep. And yes, the heat? It’s not just high, it’s “someone open a window and call HR” levels of scorching 🌶️
But underneath all the chaos and chemistry, there’s a story about reclaiming power. About refusing to shrink. About realizing that sometimes the hardest part isn’t getting revenge—it’s deciding what you actually deserve afterward.
Final verdict: wildly entertaining, unexpectedly heartfelt, and completely addictive. A fever dream, yes—but the kind you don’t want to wake up from.
Big sigh. I was excited about this book, I really, really wanted to like it…but this was not great. You have to suspend reality to a great extent, not just because of the instalove but also due to how the plot moves along. The premise sounds great, but the 24-hour plot line does not work, even when you ignore the rules of time, space, and logic. Oftentimes, it felt like I was reading gibberish, thinking to myself “make it make sense!” The book also felt drawn out, I felt like it was about 100-200 pages too long.
THE GOOD • MMCs Arthur (silent protector) and Jax (golden retriever) were particularly enjoyable • The full 8-MMC spicy scene was decent
THE MEH • The pranks against the ex were a bit ridiculous when you consider that these are supposedly 9 fully-fledged adults, including a billionaire boss, a CFO, and a mafia don. • The ages and many specifics of the MMCs were not indicated, which the author says is a conscious choice so the reader can build it up in their own mind, but between the juvenile pranks and the large harem number, it just wasn’t enough detail. April was annoying at times. And the whole side plot with her friend Laura via text was also irritating, because it really didn’t serve a purpose. • For being almost 500 pages with a comparatively large harem, the spice was only okay, kind of dull, and not as plentiful as you’d think.
THE UNFORTUNATE • There is no character development whatsoever. • The harem consisting of the guys that she works with, plus her ex-boyfriend’s brother and her favorite chef, made sense because there were established relationships. But then adding in three randoms over the course of the day just felt so inorganic, perhaps because of the lack of development. And when you take in that the three randoms are a movie star, pop star, and a mafia don, it was like “really?” The worst addition was the mafia don, Don Dante (really??), not because he was a bad MMC, but because he was a) last to be added, and b) even stretching the imagination doesn’t make him fit in the group, especially when he commits to it within minutes. • The author separates chapters and sections by the various POVs, but it’s unnecessary to do so because it’s third-person POV. Even though one character is designated, you still hear every character’s thoughts and perspective, so it doesn’t make sense. • A few times throughout the book, the author inexplicably changes from past tense (the majority) to present tense. It’s not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things, but it did throw me off.
First I’ll say this is a multiple POV but it was almost as if the characters were in third person POV. It was kind of odd. After the FMC finds her ex banging someone down in his office it turns into a free for all as the men in her atmosphere now realize she is available and all make a play. Some she meets for the first time and bingo bango they are hooked on her. She is like romantic male lead catnip. Now….I’m going to give you a solid 3 here, but I’m being a bit generous. It looks as if you are a new author and I’ll give it to you straight…loved the concept and plot line. Even adored the different characters. The development was lacking. I understand the main story happened basically within a 24 hour period, and we do see the FMC grow in confidence during that time. From a crappy “prank” from a now ex… well let’s just call it what it was…a whole lot of spicy time wrapped up in rom-com title. Some of the wording was jarring and seemed incredibly immature. I really think with some good editing and story guidance that this could have really been something great. Excellent first try though. I absolutely read it to the end and about half way I could see and feel it becoming more.
The Eight Pranks of April by Effy Bloom is part of the Hot Mess Why Choose Holidays series.
April Feuller catches her boyfriend cheating on her on their anniversary, and after taking five minutes to calm down, she decides revenge is the only way forward. With the help of eight men, she starts plotting the perfect payback. Some of these men had been attracted to her for years, while others she meets along the way during her revenge mission. By the end of it all, she not only gets over her cheating ex, but ends up with eight men who practically worship the ground she walks on.
I’ve read a few RH romance stories before, but nothing quite like this one. It’s a rom-com packed with revenge and plenty of hot scenes. At times it felt like a roller coaster of bad decisions, but somehow everything worked out in the end. It’s an engaging story, and for me, the revenge aspect was what kept me turning the pages because I really wanted to see how everything would play out. The steamy scenes were great, but my favorite moments were definitely the conversations with her bestie.
If you enjoy why choose romance with humor, drama, and revenge, this is one you might want to check out.
This book definitely leans more toward smut than plot. With one FMC and eight MMCs, there are plenty of kinks and spicy scenes throughout, but very little buildup before the relationships take off.
The banter had moments of wit, but I often found myself getting pulled out of the story by the heavy use of workplace terminology, accounting references, IT jargon, and merger discussions. At times, it almost felt like parts of the conversation were missing.
Ultimately, I finished the book because I wanted to see how everything came together, not because I was emotionally invested in the characters. For me, the sheer volume of spice started to outweigh the story. Rather than adding tension or chemistry, many of the scenes felt like words on the page.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Right Pranks of April. I needed something fun and happy to pick me up, and this was just what I wanted. Now, I want a clone of each of the men in this book (except Chad, hiss hiss growl). The book needed a tiny bit more editing, as there were some things a little off, such as phrasing repetition too close together (within the same paragraph, sometimes). The plot and the humor and the heart were good enough that I was able to fill in/ignore the things that were necessary. This book is such a good time, and it will be added to my re-read stack. I'm looking forward to more from this author, especially the best friend follow-up to this one!
The first half of this book was ridiculous in the best way. It was completely beyond the realm of believability, without even the helpful support of being an omegaverse or shifter romance. But the petty revenge was entertaining as all hell and incredibly satisfying. Watching April stand up for herself, while experiencing the revelations of the men having been yearning for her for years, was also rather satisfying.
The book was probably twice the length it needed to be, adding gratuitous insta-love/lust characters to the harem (could ABSOLUTELY have stopped at 4 or 5), and nearly all of the latter half of the book just a loose structure to showcase every sexual act imaginable, with no real additional plot.
It was insane. It was chaos, and it was so not even slightly plausible. But my god, it was so much fun! I did not stop giggling through the entire book, the characters (and there were many!!) were so fun to read, they had their own personalities, they were all so different and Lovable in their own right and honestly I wouldn't have been able to choose either!! But girl, April, is your kitty okay??? 😅
If you love chaotic good (with a sprinkle of evil), one woman, eight men. Pure sunshine in a book that will have you grinning... this is most definitely the read for you! I'm so glad the Instagram algorithm brought this author to my page, which in turn brought me to them! This was exactly the fun I needed in my life.
So, given the book's title and knowing it's one FMC, eight MMCs, one douchebag boyfriend, and a protective best friend, I expected a fun, sexy, silly rom-com that's a fluffy good time with little depth. This story is all of those things except one: it has surprising moments of depth and clarity, plus the writing is exceptionally smart, witty, and thoughtful. Bloom has a way with words and can turn a phrase like nobody's business. Several times, I stopped to re-read a sentence or description because of its cleverness or charm. Also, Bloom creates wonderful phrases or sentences that are beautifully written and very specific to the character(s) or situation. Highly recommend!
This was so much fun (as promised by the author), super chaotic, a little weird at some point, and so. Much. Spice 😂 All is laid out in the beginning of the book in a nice chart. You can even see the ratio and when spice happens. Very on par for the book as they are very nerdy about structure, spreadsheets, corporate speak and system structure. That can get a little over the top at times but it is who they are.
8 men, 8 pranks to get back at her cheating ex. Then there's the after.
The only really slightly big issue I have is the very long epilogue. It didn't need a "three months later" and a "one year later" in the length that is it. But it establishes the life after the end of April's Fools day.
This book delivers a chaotic, hilarious, and steamy ride from start to finish. I genuinely felt like I was right there with April as her life spiraled from heartbreak into a wild revenge plot that quickly got out of control. The writing is sharp, witty, and packed with unexpected humor that kept me hooked. Each character brings something unique, making the dynamic entertaining and unpredictable. What stood out most was April’s growth and confidence throughout the story. If you enjoy bold romance with high heat and humor, this is a must-read. When reviewing, always include your emotional reaction, favorite moments, character impressions, and overall rating.
Maybe I’ll give it another try someday, but this time I couldn’t make it past the arrival of the fourth guy. I know the whole 24-hour thing is clearly stated and fully intentional, and I thought I’d be able to get myself into the right mindset for it. But nope, I just couldn’t.
Everything moves way too fast, everything is way too cliché, the writing isn’t that great, and while I can sometimes suspend the rules of realism for the sake of a contemporary romance, there are still limits.
When I spend more time rolling my eyes than kicking my feet and giggling, that’s when I know it’s time to stop reading.
This book was such a fun and easy read, if you need a book to get you out of a slump or palate cleanser in between series this is it.
The book is hilarious, i laughed so much reading this book probably one of the funniest in the sense of the banter, the group chats, the pranks and the absolute lust between everyone. 8 men, 1 gal? Yes, ate that up! April deserves every single one of her men.
Overall, if you want a very spicy, why choose, absolute rom-com vibes, something to make you laugh but also has the perfect HEA. This is for you! enjoyyyy!
Ok, so I read the blurb and thought, I’m not sure about this but I’ll give it a go. I’m so glad I did, it was absolute chaos but in the best way. The characters all stood on their own, the way they all worked together. It was funny and relatable and entirely insane. I adored how April just came into her own and completely blossomed with these men, able to be herself and set boundaries as well. Absolute gem of a read, definitely 8 out of 8 recommend!
Non virgin fmc/two virgin mmcs/the rest not virgins(a few manwhore mmcs).
I don’t know wtf I just read 😂. This was a lot and not enough all at the same time.
April: (fmc) Killian: (mmc) The CEO. Arthur: (mmc) The CFO. Stoic Giant. Mateo: (mmc) The Chef. Jax: (mmc) The IT Nerd. Liam: (mmc) The Ex’s Brother. Caleb: (mmc) The Actor. Jiro: (mmc/platinum haired) The Musician. Dante: (mmc/silver streaked) The Don. Intense.
This was a lot of fun. Took me a little while to get into but, by the time we got to Chad's audition, I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Struggled a little bit with the author's decision not to provide physical descriptions of characters: I get the concept, sure... but not everyone is good at filling in the blanks. There's a reason I read fiction and not write it. Still, I really enjoyed this. It was light and fresh.
perhaps a new record for me with DNFing but, i mean, God. i'm about 95% sure this was written, at least in part, using AI. it was a small hunch, and then there were more and more tells, and once i got to the Jax POV chapter where two direct lines from April's inner monologue were re-used and the entire format changed to be weird staccato sentences, i tapped out.
interesting premise, wish it was well written. even if it's not AI, the writing is egregiously bad.
Imagine the metaphorical prose of an 80’s historical bodice ripper, only instead of flowers it is project management and computer flow. It is fun, and I’m glad I read it. I almost passed on it since it is almost 500 pages, but it still never felt painful to read. As often happens with a large harem book, some of the guys felt a bit redundant, but it does make sense why t8 is chosen.
I tend to rush through a book… especially if the intimate scenes seem to be repetitious! Nothing seemed to drag, or be rehashed! All of the chaos was thrilling and while I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, I realized I would lose important details if I rushed!
Normally I dislike April fools day...this book gave me a way to see the fun and absurdity of it all in one moment....though I kept count and laughed. Great fun story, couple of curve balls, but well worth the read...and watch the beginning, this starts slow but ends hot.
I loved this book! Trying to figure out how I can get my very own 8 sexy men. We need Laura's book now, it's not fair that April has all the sexy fun. Plus we need to know what happened to Chad and HR girl.
This book was definitely a chaotic fever dream and I loved it. I am a vibes reader, and this book gave me a wild ride. If you are looking for a deep plot, this isn't for you. However, if you'd like a tornado of a plot with SPICE and a good light read, this is for you, dear <3
I really tried with The Eight Pranks of April, but the writing style is giving me an actual migraine 😭 The premise sounds SO good!!! Like, it should be right up my street, but I genuinely can’t read it because of the way it’s written. It’s such a shame because the actual concept sounds amazing.
This book had me cackling at the antics and swooning over the guys that just want to take care of April, even if they go about it the wrong way at times. I loved getting the various POVs. The group chat is hilarious!
Sweet, sexy, and to the point. It’s not the best written book in the world, but the simplicity of their relationship and the chemistry was what I needed.
