In a new techno thriller by C. Chase Harwood a new technology combined with an older technology has been found to possibly mitigate the effects of climate change. With the oceans rising and glaciers shrinking, parts of Earth are fast becoming uninhabitable. Coastal cities are fighting back against the rising tides and storms are getting more powerful. Meanwhile, African deserts are becoming even more inhospitable, with water being very scarce. With tribal tensions at an all time high, and fighting between rival warlords more common than ever, the United Nations has taken on two new projects to ease the water shortage and to try to lower the temperature of Earth. The main focus of the book is on the second project which involves a cloud of nanobots at the outer limits of the atmosphere, which are controlled from a UN building in Nairobi. These nanobots are locked in orbit, blocking sunlight from reaching Earths surface, thus cooling the planet. If it gets too cool, they can be manipulated to let in more sunlight to warm things up as needed. Add in a couple of carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen who are intent on bringing about the “End of Days” while engaging in ecoterrorism and you have a very compelling story.
I really did enjoy the story as Mr. Harwood makes a compelling case about climate change and the effects it has on the entire planet. I thought the characters were well drawn and really hated a couple of them. The book needed another go over by his editor as there were numerous places where quotation marks were not completed or not there at all, which made following some of the dialog hard to do. I did reach out to the author about this and he responded that he would check it out and thanked me for bringing it to his attention. In my opinion, Mr. Harwood’s writing gets better and better with each book he writes, and you can tell he is very passionate about climate change and the havoc it is wrecking on our planet.
