Hog's Mall

Rate this book
Thirty years ago, a sleepy Southern town was shattered by a massacre in a local grocery store—its aisles turned into a blood-soaked playground by an unknown man with a deadly hide and seek. The killer vanished without a trace, leaving devastation in his wake and a community without answers.

Now, in 2025, the grocery store is no more, the scars have faded, and the town has tried to move on. But the game is far from over.

When bodies begin to turn up again—mutilated, arranged, taunting—the nightmare reignites. The killer is back... or someone just as twisted. As panic spreads, a disgraced private investigator, along with aging survivors and terrified townsfolk, tries to uncover the truth. Is the original butcher back to finish what he started? Or has something even worse crawled out of the dark?

I really, really tried to like this one, but I finally had to give up and admit it's not for me. I found the writing quite confusing, and had great trouble with the pacing: it all felt like the engine cranking but never catching. The author is obviously talented and the story has potential, but the book is still a couple of drafts away from a proper debut novel (ie. one that has something worth saying). To be honest, with such a large cast, and the killer openly involved as well, it'd have been better to focus on the action, without so much detail about personal lives, especially about people who'll be killed off anyway. I felt this watered down the suspense and eventually took my interest away. But that's just me; I'm sure others will find the book more enjoyable.

Run, Little Piggies… because this mall is open for slaughter.
Hog’s Mall by C. S. Gorman is the kind of horror that doesn’t politely knock on the door it kicks it down, drenched in blood and chaos. From the moment I started reading, the atmosphere felt wrong in the best way. A mall setting should feel familiar fluorescent lights, empty stores, long hallways but this book twists that comfort into something sinister and claustrophobic. The tension builds like you’re walking through a deserted shopping center at night… except something is hunting. The story moves fast and brutally. Every chapter feels like it’s tightening the screws, pushing the characters deeper into a nightmare where survival is anything but guaranteed. The imagery is vivid and savage perfect for readers who love dark, gritty horror that doesn’t pull its punches. What really stood out to me was the tone. This isn’t just horror for the sake of gore; there’s a sense of dread lurking behind every page. The title Run, Little Piggies… feels less like a tagline and more like a warning.

If you enjoy horror that feels like a mix of slasher chaos and psychological dread, this is absolutely worth the read.

30 years earlier a game of grocery store hostage hide and seek turned a small town upside down.

Well now, 30 years later, the killings are happening again after they never found the killer.

This is a great splatterpunk mystery thriller. There are a couple spots of extreme gore.

Hog’s Mall does a great job of keeping you guessing as to who the savage from the grocery store is today.

If you’re into a crime thriller, with some splatterpunk give this debut novel a read!

But before you do that, make sure you find a hiding spot where you won’t be found!

Received ARC to review by author:

I just finished Hog’s Mall (out next week), and for a debut novel, it was a fun time. I really appreciated that the author took the time to focus on the characters- sometimes in horror, people just feel like background props, but here you can tell there was a real effort to give them personality. The story kept moving with some interesting twists, too. A solid start for a novel debut!

It feels weird describing this book as fun when it has some pretty mean-spirited kills, but that's exactly what it is. The prologue was an excellent introduction into the world, kept me up until 6am reading on some nights.

I highly recommend checking this out. It's a quick read that keeps your attention throughout.

Thirty years after a grocery store massacre shattered a small Southern town, the killings start again... and it reads exactly like a late-night slasher film. The tone is cinematic and nostalgic, with that classic “no one is safe” energy through the book
