The priory, its people, and its resident Angel have their own purpose in a far larger history of trauma and conflict. Malachi learns of ancient and modern atrocities and his grandfather’s helplessness in the face of both. Past echoes become present concerns as a new battle approaches. Malachi repeatedly tries and fails to leave the escalating danger.

This is not his land, nor is it his war. He did not inherit his grandfather’s vocation, nor take his grandfather’s vows. None of this is his fault, nor even his responsibility. And yet the Angel will not let him go until Their last judgment is complete.

It is entirely possible I simply didn't "get" this book or wasn't the right audience for it. But reviews are meant to convey subjecting reading experience, and mine was underwhelming. Although with qualifiers. Which is to say, the book is beautifully written and pleasingly compact, which are two significant bonuses.
My first experience with the author, so I didn't know what to expect. The quality of prose was unignorable, but the plotting left a lot to be desired. In fact, I'd say this had about a short story's worth of plot leisurely spread across 180 pages of beautiful descriptions. There was also a sort of dream-like quality to the narrative I wasn't sure I appreciated.
So all-in-all, a quick but not a particularly satisfying read. User mileage may vary. Thanks Netgalley.

ARC via Netgalley. I loooooooved the prose and the atmosphere of this novella, but I have to say I was a little confused about what exactly was happening "behind" the narrative, if that makes sense. It took me almost half the book to realize that it was set in a near-future of the real world (in Wales!) rather than a fantasy country that was inspired by the UK. I suspect that if I knew which real-world events were being implied (is the war the Irish against the English? Welsh separatists against unionists? Scottish separatists against the English? Who were the refugee children who died, and where were they refugees from?) I would have gotten the book a little more. But even not fully understanding the point of the story, I really enjoyed the read!
