Буда в теб. Пътеводител към будизма за начинаещи: от карма до нирвана

Rate this book

This book covers the tenets of Buddhism and meditation in a friendly, easy to read style for anyone curious about Buddhism. (A religion whose core beliefs are "do no harm" and "be kind" does sound pretty remarkable.) It's a quick read, but still very informative, and is recommended for all public library collections. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.

Just what I needed – a gentle, easy-to-digest intro to Buddhist philosophy. I loved how it shows that karma, meditation, and compassion aren’t just abstract ideas, but things you can actually bring into everyday life. The chapters are clear and practical, with little exercises that make it super beginner-friendly.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

This is like a beginners guide to Buddhism, filled with information to enlighten the reader with an understanding of what is (and isn't) Buddhism. There are mantras, meditations, and boundless wisdom that you can reflect upon. As a Christian who no longer recognizes what Christianity has become today, I was interested in seeing what Buddhism was all about. It answered a lot of questions that I (and I am sure many others) have wondered about, and I agreed with a lot of the principles, and liked the idea of having more inner peace in my life..... especially during this time that we are all facing. Do you need to convert to Buddhism or even desire to convert in order to read this book? Of course not. Do I think you will benefit from reading it? Absolutely!

A gentle primer that provides perfect, bite-sized concepts for those with any curiosity for Buddhism, whether they intend to follow the philosophy themselves or not. I appreciated Mordy Levine's narration, which in itself was gentle, encouraging, and soothing, making the key concepts shared feel both accessible and relatable. The book summarizes and provides actionable practices for the Four Noble Truths, the 8-Fold Path, and perspectives on karma and reincarnation. While the audiobook production and narration was very well done, I found myself wishing for a print copy as well so that I could explore each concept more slowly and intentionally.

Thank you to Sounds True Audiobooks, NetGalley, Lama Lhanang Rinpoche, and Mordy Levine for an advance listening copy for honest review. Well done! 4.5 stars rounded up.

Truth in advertising - The Buddha in You: A Beginner's Guide to Buddhism is exactly what it says it is, an easy to understand introduction to Buddhism. This book requires absolutely no prior knowledge before jumping in. However, just because it is an introduction doesn't mean that it is shallow. There is a lot here to think about and chew on. The authors' approach is inclusive, giving the reader permission to move at their own pace and take whatever they find helpful into their own spiritual path. There are exercises which put principles into immediate practice which is a brilliant way of combining learning with doing. The audio made it easy and intuitive to be led into various meditations but I could see wanting a paper copy in order to underline and highlight. Thank you to the authors, Sounds True, and NetGalley for the audioARC.

4.5⭐️s, round up to five: The author/narrator’s voice was calming, clear and nice to listen to. A good fit for this book.

I really enjoyed the book. It is definitely a beginner Buddhism book, so doesn’t delve deep into any one topic. I had questions. But gives you enough to go find more information on the topics that are of most interest to you. It covers a lot of topics and is the right length for an introduction. I’ve already done further study on a couple of topics and plan to keep this audiobook around to revisit.

Thank you NetGalley and Sounds True Audiobooks for a free ARC of the audiobook.

I picked up The Buddha in You as part of a personal goal to read more about different religions this year. I’ve always had a strong interest in world religions—sparked by my college religious studies courses—and Buddhism has consistently intrigued me. This book offers a clear, accessible introduction to Buddhist teachings, making it a great choice for anyone exploring the subject from either an educational or purely curious standpoint.

The Four Noble Truths are explained in a way that's easy to grasp, and the writing overall is both compelling and approachable. One of the things I appreciated most was how the teachings are framed as tools for self-improvement, inner strength, and everyday resilience. Rather than feeling abstract or overly philosophical, the ideas felt very grounded and applicable to real life. The selfless, compassionate nature of these teachings offers a refreshing and hopeful contrast to how religion is so often weaponized in America today—used as a means of control or to uphold systems of power and privilege.

I listened to the audiobook and really appreciated the narrator’s tone and delivery, though I found myself wishing I had read a physical copy to better absorb some of the concepts. Still, it was a very enjoyable and thought-provoking read. For anyone curious about Buddhism or looking to deepen their understanding of different belief systems, I highly recommend this book. Thank you to NetGalley and Sounds You Audio for providing me with an ARC.

Fantastic resource for an introduction to Buddhism. This book covers the basics on the history, wisdom, and benefits of practicing Buddhism. The information is presented in a very open and respectful manner that would appeal to readers who are casually exploring ideas, as well as those readers who are ready to actively begin incorporating Buddhist teachings and practices into their day-to-day lives.

I listened to this on audio and found the narration style very calming and comforting. I honestly wanted to start this audiobook from start all over again as soon as it had finished, it made my daily commute much more relaxing and set my mind up for a more calm approach to my day.

A big thanks to Netgalley and Sounds True Audiobooks for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great introduction to Buddhism. I received both an audiobook and ebook version from Net Galley. It was short, sweet and digestible.
The book flowed logically through an overview of the history, principles, practices and types of Buddhism. Each chapter had several areas where the authors asked you to pause and reflect about how a concept made you feel or to take a moment to put into practice one of the principles they'd just explained.

Look forward to returning to this book again for moments of reflection and deeper understanding, as well as reading the resources/ recommendations they provided at the end of the book.

I went in knowing a little bit about the history of Buddhism from a textbook, but I appreciated the perspective from a Buddhist themselves. The book was structured nicely and written with language that was easy to follow. I appreciated how little beginning steps were given for you to start practicing. I never realized that some of things I do already come from Buddhism! I learned quite a bit from this book and will take many of the lessons with me! I would suggest anyone who is interested in learnings basics of Buddhism to this book!

No pun intended, but I found this book to be very enlightening.

I’ve never known much about Buddhism and this took me on a historical and educational journey into what the meaning of this religion is. While I read this in one sitting, I will definitely be thinking and contemplating these lessons for a while, and I can see myself coming back to this text for clarity.

This book was a fantastic clear and concise beginners guide about Buddism, when it began and how it came about. Great as a beginners read but enjoyable to pick up and read at anytime.
It tells you the history of the Buddha and how buddist practice fits into life today. It discusses how Buddhists live their lives to help others. 'They have great compassion for others without the self-centered mentality'.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy to enjoy.

Probably a little too casual for people who have read other books, been on retreats, talked with practicing friends. But for the right beginner it is indeed a good introduction... and we can hope will help those who need to become practitioners to seek more guidance, or at least apply the lessons here consistently.

Some of my favorite bits -

The four immeasurables:
May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness.
May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.
May all beings rejoice in the well being of others.
May all beings live in peace, free from greed and hatred.

A tip - instead of inhaling 12345 holding 123 exhaling 12345, consider just counting each full cycle. Inhale exhale count 1, inhale exhale count 2, etc.

I already have a mantra, but I have been fretful lately so I'll try "Good luck, bad luck, maybe" for awhile. If you don't know the fable, that alone is worth borrowing this book from your library.

A 'grace' from a practitioner of Zen Buddhism:

Earth, water, fire, air, and space
combined to make this food.
Numberless beings gave their lives and laborers
that we may eat.
May we be nourished,
that we may nourish life.

Roshi Joan Halifax

Almost all of the advice is about things I, personally, already do, because I am "so old and wise" as the saying goes (not really - it's just that I've been working on myself my whole life, ever since I was raised well). But I still enjoyed reading it.

Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio version of this title in exchange for my review.

I have read about Buddhism in the past, so this wasn't a new concept to me. But I found it to be a very nice refresher or introduction to Buddhism. The book covers 4 Noble Truths, the 8 Fold Path, a few different schools of Buddhism, discussions about karma, reincarnation, and other teachings. The included mindfulness and meditation exercises would be good for beginners.

The audio is narrated by Mordy Levine, one of the authors. Theirs is a nice calm voice to listen to, clear and easy to listen to, especially during the mindfulness and meditation exercises.

5 stars - recommend to any interested in Buddhism.

THE BUDDHA IN YOU: A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BUDDHISM, FROM KARMA TO NIRVANA
BY: LAMA LHANANG RINPOCHE

This was my second Non-Fictional Title in a row that I have had a fantastic reading experience from the Wonderful Sounds True Publishing, in which from what I am learning about them are some pretty
impressive features. They are a Non Profit Organization that has grown in size from what started out as much smaller origins that have grown much larger in size. It appears from my recent discovery of them, that their core belief is to place their emphasis on focusing to enrich the population with promoting, and providing their content that they publish towards fostering learning being accessible to everyone. They seem to be extremely altruistic in caring about taking some complex subjects, and putting their best motivation towards their Non-fiction being presented in such a fashion that the information is easy to grasp for a wider audience. In other words, there's one that I read about a cutting edge, groundbreaking new approach to healing, that discussed the Neuroscience in an easy to understand, digestible, and comprehensive way that I admired. I'll explain why. I remember thinking aloud that there was motivation behind it that I felt took effort, and a lot of caring to educate not just Clinicians, since the author made it intriguing enough for everyone by his descriptions which produced the outcome that one didn't need a Scientific background to learn. The author has a PhD, and works within the realms of peers experienced in the field of Neuroscience, yet made that section understandable encompassing a general audience. He went above and beyond to not just describe a dense, dry, encyclopedia in how our anatomy works, but he also engages the reader to be captivated enough to not skip that section, even though he tells the reader that it's okay to do so, and go to the case studies. The author made the Neuroscience section to be as fascinating as any page turning suspense novel, by describing the Nervous system in such a way that I did not want to stop reading. I think that pretty much summarizes how much effort, and caring about educating everybody equally by making sure their books contain high quality content. I've read three in a row, that impressed me by how well written they were, and that they are all full of helpful topics aimed at being informative for a wide demographic. For example, the one I mentioned above is called, "Safe and Sound," so that the most complex topics are conveyed in both easy to understand methods contained in their execution being top quality, while also written to engage their readers. That's been my experience so far. I'm even hoping that I can receive one of their catalogs by which I can find more of their titles already published. Sounds True Publishing missions, and goals are I've noticed to be altruistic, and informative with hopes of simplifying their content for reaching every reader which makes them pretty special in my opinion. A selfless, Non Profiting Publisher trying to be informative in their Non-fiction have delivered me three out three ARCS reads so far. All of which were Five Star reading experiences that I learned somethings in each title to bring more peace and calm into my life.

In that same approach this title which is called, "THE BUDDHA IN YOU," is also masterfully written in a very easy to read, making the Subtitle "A Beginner's Guide to Buddhism, from Karma to Nirvana," deliver exactly what it suggests. It's truly the most basic, beginners introduction to Buddhism that I've read, and that's just what I was hoping for when I selected this. While I'm familiar with the subject this gave me invaluable information that was written in such a way that it far exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite aspects that I appreciated was how when new information was presented, I loved how simply defined what it meant followed right after it was introduced. This made this book a stand out, in which it was both enjoyable, and informative at the same time. I learned so much, but I appreciated how much more thought was put into this that I wish that all authors used that format or writing device. The Author never assumed that I already knew what everything meant. Quite the contrary. The way it was written took the welcomed approach of explaining in easy to digest details everything, with the assumption that I didn't already know the details, which elevated this book to be exactly what I needed. By using this much gentler approach, it was a captivating reading experience throughout this entire narrative. I noticed at the end where there were resources that alluded to being used in part as sources, to craft this excellent Non-Fiction title that was short, and concise, but also a more comprehensive, informative explanation of the subject, and history of Buddhism. When I recognized the titles of two books that I've read and loved by, two Authors who I try to keep up to date on their work, which both Authors are World famously known whose books are World famous, as well. Additionally, they both have the same soothing, and calming writing style as this one did. I said to myself, Aha! Since that's how I felt while reading this author's words from the very beginning until I sadly reached the end. It was a brilliant job how skillful and talented this Author started out in the very beginning adding new information in chronological order first by giving some historical background of how and when Buddhism originated. In a conversational tone the key concepts were added layer by layer. I really loved this book, much more than I anticipated. I applaud both how it gave me the encouragement to try to seek out some more resources on many things that I learned. I never knew until I reached the end, there might be possibilities of further inquiries of help with one challenging element that would be helpful when I get some of my present commitments finished. Right now, I'm so grateful for the opportunity for having been given ideas to put into practice immediately. This was inspirational, and has me hopeful that I can immediately keep trying to expand on what was reintroduced to me that the Authors gently gave me a new way of looking at certain concepts. They reminded me of the benefits of all the positive reasons why I need to make the effort that resonated with me more profoundly in this narrative. They were able to teach me certain concepts where past attempts failed to get through to me as powerfully as this book accomplished. For those reasons I gained a great deal from this book, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Authors, and Sounds True Publishing for urging me to apply what this book taught me that I can easily do since reading this which I'm incorporating already. For the harder aspects, have motivated me to keep practicing, and renewed my hope that I might be able to seek out the help to attain the training I may need for the harder concept of one thing that I tried before, and couldn't do it. They made me realize that I'm not alone, and if I'm totally honest, I think I gave up too easily, and didn't give it my one hundred percent effort of giving it all that I had. I'm still grateful for this fantastic book, and this was helpful by giving me a few new ideas that I'm going to research that may help if it's possible. I will end by saying that I'm grateful for the encouragement that sums it up. PRACTICE!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — The Buddah in You By Lama Lhanang Rinpoche: A Transformative and Grounding Read
My goodness, I’ve found it! The Buddha in You is the book I’ve been searching for — one that explains Buddhism in a succinct and honest fashion, while inspiring the reader to practice meditation not just for themselves, but for the betterment of the world.
I began my personal journey to get to know the Buddha about 16 months ago. At the time, I was feeling like a grouchy old man and wanted to refine my thinking. I turned first to Stoic philosophy and then to Eastern religions as a way to let go of anger, discontentment, and desire. Along the way, I discovered many insights — but nothing has spoken to me quite like Lama Lhanang Rinpoche’s gentle wisdom in this book.
The mindfulness movement is strongly present today, and resources like Headspace and other apps are beneficial for learning the basics. Yet I’ve often found that many Buddhist texts either dive into excessive detail or argue points that don’t contribute much to actual inner peace. The Buddha in You does it right. It strikes the perfect balance — accessible, practical, and deeply meaningful without being overwhelming.
What sets it apart is the way it balances depth and clarity. The teachings never feel abstract or out of reach. Instead, they’re practical reminders to cultivate compassion, patience, and mindfulness right here in daily life. Rinpoche’s words guide you inward, helping you recognize the calm, resilient “Buddha” that’s always been present within.
Reading The Buddha in You doesn’t feel like study — it feels like coming home. It’s a book I know I’ll return to again and again, both as a companion on my own path and as inspiration to keep practicing with an open heart.
Highly recommended to anyone seeking peace, clarity, or simply a better way to live.

This is a warm, concise, and highly approachable introduction to Buddhist thought and practice, offering both clarity and gentle guidance for beginners and the simply curious. The book includes essential teachings—like karma, meditation, and reincarnation—with simple, doable reflections and meditations that invite readers to experience Buddhism rather than merely read about it. Its tone is welcoming rather than prescriptive, reassuring readers that they need not adopt every belief or label themselves Buddhist to benefit from the practices. By weaving together accessible explanations with practical, moment-to-moment invitations toward wisdom, compassion, and kindness, The Buddha in You becomes less a doctrinal primer and more a companion for cultivating calm, joy, and gratitude in daily life. The narrator of this ALC , also one of the authors, was pleasant to listen to. I felt like I was being welcomed in to explore Buddhism without judgement of what my end result would be.
Thanks to NetGalley and Sounds True Audiobooks for this ALC in exchange for my honest review.

A great, concise introduction to Buddhism. Includes an overview of the 4 Noble Truths, the 8 Fold Path, different schools of Buddhism, discussions about karma, reincarnation, and other teachings.

I've dabbled in Buddhism teachings before and enjoyed the refresher of the information. The included mindfulness and meditation exercises were good for beginners.

The audiobook is narrated by one of the authors, Mordy Levine. His voice is clear, strong, and easy to understand. He has a calming manner that is great for the included meditation exercises.

Recommended for anyone curious about Buddhism or just wanting a refresher.

A Good Introduction to Buddhism ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found this book to be quite easy to follow. The tone is friendly and the concepts are well explained without being too academic or overwhelming; it’s a great entry point for people who have never explored Buddhist teachings before.

However, I found myself wanting more nuance and substance. At times, the explanations felt overly simplistic, and certain sections became a bit repetitive. The spiritual guidance, while well-meaning, occasionally comes across as somewhat generic.

In a nutshell, it’s a decent introduction, but those seeking a deeper exploration of Buddhist philosophy or practice may wish to pair it with more in-depth reading.

The Buddha in you provides a concise guide to learning about Buddhism, its history and teachings, and how to apply the tenets and practice reflections. The contemplation chapters were great and gave the reader an opportunity to pause and take in what they’ve just read as well as practice.

I also liked how in the contemplation that reflection takes time and consistent practice, and readers are encouraged to reflect over time. I thought the narration was well done as well.

If I got credit for every time I read a book about Buddhism, I would have already achieved nirvana. I spend too much time worrying and stressing and studying Buddhism and trying to practice its principles is so helpful to me. This is an excellent book for a beginner of someone who wants a refresher. There are lots of tips for living and an attitude that you don't have to do everything perfectly -- everything you do helps you get closer to your goal. Thanks to NetGalley I got to listen to the audiobook, which is excellent, clear, and easy to understand.

I love to read books on different religions and spiritual practices. I have read many on Buddhism and most if not all of them have given me great insights on meditation and mindfulness but not the background and fundamentals of Buddhism. This is a great short and simple explanation of Buddhism. I loved the contemplation questions at the end of each chapter.

You don't have to be looking to convert to Buddhism to be interested in Buddha practices. So much wisdom can be found in these views. This book covers the basics, offers simple reflections, practices, and meditations, as well as basic information and inspiring quotes. The core belief is "do no harm, be kind". Isn't that what it comes down to at the end of the day? Shouldn't this be how we think everyday? A good introduction, worthwhile read.

In the fall of 1967 as a sophomore at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota I was privileged to participate in the Term in Thailand with 25 other students. We studied at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok - Buddhism, Southeast Asian history, art, literature, and political science. On the way to Bangkok we visited Japan and Hong Kong. Coming home included stops in Penang, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Guam. We were the only undergraduate study group in Southeast Asia - the closest program was in Japan. One was to Kanchanaburi the site of the "Bridge over the River Kwai" This is bridge 277 of the Burma-Siam Railway and spans the Khwae Noi River. Before visiting the bridge we stopped at the death railway War Cemetery which contains 6,982 graves of British, Australian and Dutch prisoners of war of which 6,858 have been identified. ( As far as is known, all American POW's who died building the railroad were returned to the United States. ) We confronted the waste of a war when had ended 22 years earlier. The graves are immaculate and the tropical flowers, especially the bougainvillea, were beautiful. I remember one marker had the inscription: "There’s some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England" from a poem by Rupert Brooke who died of dysentery and blood poisoning aboard a troop ship during World War I. While we were standing at the bridge a very rustic locomotive and train crossed. The most devastating event of that hour was while we stood in the beauty and history of the site, three American fighter jets made a low pass over the bridge on the way to bomb in Vietnam. WE NEVER LEARN!!!!!!!!!! *************We were taught by a Buddhist priest at the university. I was raised in a strict Lutheran church where you had to believe that you were actually consuming the blood and body of Christ. Learning about Buddhism and its ancient history and visiting WWII sites of brutality led to more culture shock for me in trying to fit back into a Lutheran tradition. I am no longer a "Christian" in the sense of believing that Jesus is the ONLY way to god / heaven / nirvana. I am not a Buddhist, but believe that the seeking of truth can manifest itself in many paths. Kristi & Abby Tabby
