Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings. As a child she was influenced by the works of the illustrator Kate Greenaway, whom she assiduously copied in her formative years. Her principal influence, however, was the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Cicely Mary Barker’s poems which accompany her illustrations of flower fairies work rather well in the context of her themed books, but in this compilation book which combines fairies from most of her smaller books takes the poems quite out of scope and shows their distinct weakness. Thankfully the illustrations are strong enough to make up for the lack of theme in the poems, and it was a delight to get a chance to see some of the more rare illustrations. I own a few of the themed collections (Wayside and Autumn), so I am familiar with some of the pictures already, but I had never seen her alphabet fairies or had the chance to get to the tree fairies or summer fairies. Just more inspiration to get my hands on all of her smaller books, one by one, I just have to keep scoping out the thrift shops!
Such a whimsical collection! I had one Flower Fairies journal-type book growing up, not one with the poems, so these walked the line between nostalgia and something new beautifully. The illustrations are so colorful and precious, and I loved learning about the different flowers themselves through rhyme and Cicely’s (I presume it was her and not a later addition?) occasional notes on them. You can tell she really loved England and its flora. God is truly creative with His flowers and everything else, and this book reminded me of that.
What a beautiful collection of matching fairy illustrations and poems! I didn't come across a single thing to criticize while reading this book. The artwork was charming and the songs entertaining (and informative!). I also enjoyed the author's notes that sometimes followed her poems. It's lovely and nostalgic in the best way to see the world from the point of view of flora fairies dreamed up in the first half of the 20th century.
I received this book as a Christmas present last year and, now that I've sat down and read it properly, I couldn't be more pleased to have it~
Beautifully illustrated flower fairy book, filled with lovely poetry. It is a timeless treasure you will enjoy forever. Each of her little fairies have sweet childlike little faces making them even more appealing and enjoyable to look at.
