Ulley's Odyssey

Rate this book
A father lost in the stars. A family fighting to survive. An epic myth reimagined on an interstellar stage.

After Ulley becomes an unwilling participant in the Consortium’s brutal victory over the distant planet Troia, he flees into the uncharted space of the Aegean star cluster, unable to face the family he left behind on Ithaca. His escape plunges him into a gauntlet of impossible worlds: mind-bending flora, monstrous AIs, shapeshifting curses, and celestial beings who hint that an ancient myth is repeating itself.
On Ithaca, his wife Pennae struggles to hold their failing space habitat together as the Consortium moves to seize the crown jewel orbiting Jupiter, their daughter, Helen, is branded a revolutionary, and their son Telly journeys across the stars in search of Ulley.

The truth becomes clear: to return home, Ulley must confront the gods of the future. And the ghosts of his past.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Being a classics major in college and having read the odyssey many times I thought I'd give this a try. I really enjoyed Ulley's journey; it was very much like Odysseus’s and these parallels are what kept me going. The sci-fi parts are where I got totally confused. I have a feeling sci-fi fans will be confused about all these characters and what is going on for all of these years but all the ship descriptions and AI stuff go way over my head. The side story of Pennae, Telly, and Helen were fine but not really needed with a lot of embellishing on the original. What I didn't enjoy was mainly the cursing and odd sexual content. And lastly what I hated… The ending … it was only part 1. I didn't realize this would be a series, as i neared the end of the book I was wondering how they were going to wrap it all up. Well they didn't so you have to read part 2.

This is a highly creative science-fiction reimagining of Homer’s Odyssey. Even though the core story is thousands of years old, this retelling kept me fully engaged and eager to see what was happens next. It’s deeply rooted in an ancient narrative that has kept the story alive and relevant for centuries, while at the same time launching the reader into the far future through sci-fi twists and turns. It was a very fun read.

The balance between myth and science fiction was well managed. It honors the original journey while at the same time creating something fresh, immersive, and genuinely hard to put down. I flew through it.

He is lost in space after being forced to do some awful things while his family is fighting to survive. He wants to find redemption but it is not going to be so easy. Follow both of them as they fight to survive their harsh reality
